Lachlan Young's trial for the murder of Hannah Maguire entered its fourth day today in Ballarat
00:04
Supreme Court. Today, for the first time, the jury heard from Debbie and Glenn Maguire, Hannah's
00:08
parents. Glenn spoke of Hannah and Lachlan's tumultuous relationship and told the jury that
00:14
he had witnessed Lachlan be rude and demanding towards his daughter multiple times. He said that
00:18
he had tried to have conversations with Lachlan about how he treated Hannah, but nothing changed.
00:23
Glenn was very emotional as he gave evidence he had to stop and take a break as the prosecution
00:28
asked him about the last night he spent with his daughter. Debbie, Hannah's mum, also grew
00:32
emotional when she told the jury about a text message she received from Hannah's phone the
00:36
night that she was killed. The text message, which was received shortly before 4am, read
00:41
I'm sorry mum, I thought this was the right decision. I tried to heal and cope with it all, but I'm not
00:46
okay. I thought leaving was the best decision. I tried to reconnect with people to help me move on,
00:51
but I couldn't do it. I tried messaging Lachlan, but he doesn't want anything to do with me now.
00:56
Please check in on him. This is going to break his heart. Now, the prosecution alleges that this
01:01
text message was sent by Lachlan Young from Hannah Maguire's phone shortly after he killed her on
01:05
April 5th, 2024. The prosecution alleges that this was Lachlan's attempt at making Hannah's death look
01:10
like a suicide. Debbie also told the court of an incident in February 2023, where Hannah called her
01:16
on the phone hysterically crying. Debbie said that Hannah told her Lachlan was following her in his car
01:22
and that he had cut her off in traffic, gotten out of his vehicle and started punching Hannah's
01:26
driver's side window, telling her to get out of the vehicle. Now, Hannah managed to drive off and went
01:30
straight to the Ballarat Police Station, where she filed an IVO. The court also heard from a
01:35
Constable Stevenson, who helped Hannah file that application. The trial will continue on Tuesday and is
01:41
expected to last for four more weeks.
