00:00From an emotional zombie drama and an anti-capitalist satire to multiple highly anticipated series
00:05finales, here are THR's critics' picks for the best TV shows of 2023.
00:12THR TV critics Daniel Feinberg and Angie Han each broke down their respective top 10 lists for the
00:17year, and while each distinct, there was some overlap. For Feinberg, his top 10 list included
00:23some buzzy shows like HBO's The Last of Us at number 10, Hulu's The Bear at number 8,
00:28and Netflix's Wrestlers at number 4. Han's top 10, meanwhile, included The Bear at number 7,
00:34Peacock's Mrs. Davis at number 5, and Max's The Other Two at number 4.
00:38And now, on to the top 3, which was unanimous. At number 3, we have Netflix's Beef. Feinberg said
00:45no show captured 2023's undercurrent of unfocused discontent with the intensity,
00:50empathy, and underlying humor of Lee Sung-jin's 8-episode Beef. Han noted,
00:55it's the show's understanding of the existential anguish propelling its characters,
01:00and the clear-eyed tenderness with which creator Lee Sung-jin excavates the experiences
01:04and sources of that pain. That made this drama-comedy thriller not just one of the
01:09most purely entertaining watches of this year, but possibly also the most cathartic.
01:14At number 2, HBO's Succession. Han said,
01:17Succession didn't just keep its audience on the knife's edge between repulsion and sympathy,
01:21and made that balancing act its very foundation, all the way through a thunderous ending that felt
01:27at once shocking and inevitable. Feinberg noted that the final season had all the usual acting
01:32suspects shine, as well as a reminder that one of the show's core messages has always been
01:37that nobody knows how to hurt you like your family.
01:40And at number 1, FX and Hulu's Reservation Dogs.
01:43Han noted,
01:44Meanwhile, Feinberg stated that the Hulu series completed its elegant three-season evolution
02:00from a raucous comedy about four indigenous teens desperate to leave their rural Oklahoma
02:04reservation into TV's most soulful half-hour about the value of community and intergenerational
02:10connection. To read more on THR Critics' best TV shows of 2023, head to THR.com.
