00:00This is what advanced Lipoedema looks like.
00:02It can grow in the arms, the breasts, the stomach, the buttocks, the legs.
00:06Mine is primarily in my legs.
00:08As you can see, they are very heavy and uncomfortable.
00:11Lipoedema doesn't just affect your appearance.
00:13It also has effects under the surface.
00:16Your legs can feel heavier throughout the day,
00:18and sometimes it can feel like there's insects crawling all up and down them.
00:22Lipoedema can be really painful, and it can also affect your mobility.
00:26A lot of people tend to focus on how Lipoedema looks,
00:28when really it should be how it makes you feel.
00:31Unfortunately, there are many causes for Lipoedema,
00:34but her story points to some common causes.
00:36Pregnancy, puberty, perimenopause, and menopause.
00:40Trauma and stress also play quite a big part in this too.
00:43I was diagnosed with 11,07, so a bigger kid anyway.
00:48Then you're getting put on diets continuously.
00:49So I'm constantly up and down with my weight,
00:52and then that leads to binge eating,
00:54also leads to other ways of trying to lose weight.
00:57I'm destroying my body as time goes on.
00:59Getting diagnosed while I was pregnant,
01:01and pregnancy is a big thing that triggers Lipoedema.
01:04And then my dad got ill and passed away,
01:07and I was 30 weeks pregnant.
01:09More stress on the body.
01:10I had my son, and then got pregnant quite quickly again,
01:14because my body's not going to recover.
01:15I had my other son, and that was through emergency C-section,
01:18where we both nearly...
01:19So again, more stress on the body.
01:21I can look back, and it's not so much like I let it progress.
01:24It's that I was doing things, but probably not properly.
01:27Many of her audience question if there's any surgery available for it to be removed,
01:31but it's not as simple as it seems.
01:33I did actually ask a surgeon in the UK,
01:35sent some thoughts on my body,
01:37and he was like,
01:38no, you've got too much loose skin,
01:39too overweight,
01:40you need too many surgeries.
01:41In the UK, I'm not eligible for liposuction,
01:44as they don't do it anymore.
01:45The only surgeon in the UK who did it
01:47has actually retired now.
01:48I'm aware that there are surgeons in the UK,
01:50up and down the country,
01:51who do provide liposuction for lipidemia as well.
01:54However, it is costly.
01:57There probably won't be a stage where
01:58surgery is no longer an option for me.
02:00Her application for surgery funding was declined by the NHS,
02:04as it's seen as cosmetic.
02:05That is still something that really irritates me now,
02:07because it's not cosmetic.
02:08I don't care what I look like.
02:09I do not care what I look like.
02:11It's all about the pain, mobility,
02:13and the relief that that would bring.
02:14But her journey with lipidemia
02:16has empowered her to be more self-loving.
02:18And now she's doing the most
02:20to look after herself and her body.
02:22And now I'm in a safe space.
02:24I am doing lots of therapy, grounding.
02:28I'm doing a lot to help my lipidemia.
02:32And I'm never going to reverse it.
02:34I'm going to be able to reverse it.
02:36What I am able to do is help the inflammation,
02:38make it more soft or wobbly,
02:40and try and keep it at this level.
02:42I will always say lipidemia is not your fault,
02:44because it isn't.
02:44Lipidemia is not your fault.
02:45It's a medical condition.
02:47And then some people are like,
02:48oh, well, I should have done this.
02:49I should have done that.
02:49It's a chronic illness.
02:50It lives with you.
02:52And you never know what's going on in people's lives.
02:53You never know what people are dealing with.
02:55You never know what people are doing.
02:56I didn't let it progress.
02:58There was just a lot going on.
03:00I don't know.
03:01I'm looking at that in people's lives.
03:05I find out someone you never know what people are doing.
03:08You never know what people are doing.
03:09I wanna know what people are doing.
03:11Are you trying to find out who's also trying to get something to do?
