00:00This was a heartbreaking weekend of unspeakable tragedy and yet one that disturbingly feels all too familiar.
00:07Following two deadly mass shootings that took place in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio in the span of 24 hours over the weekend,
00:14late night hosts dedicated their Monday night monologues to the issue of gun control,
00:18specifically urging Congress to do more in making changes to gun laws.
00:22On late night, Seth Meyers described the past weekend's tragedy as heartbreaking
00:26and a moment that demands moral clarity and urgency from our political leaders.
00:30Meyers pointed out that Republican leaders seem to dodge questions from the media related to shootings or gun laws
00:36and treat the shootings as an unsolvable problem,
00:38even though there's a direct correlation between the number of guns in this country
00:42and the number of gun-related deaths in the U.S.
00:45Let me just say as a general rule, when you're spending all of your time dodging questions from journalists or reporters,
00:51that usually means you're on the wrong side of history.
00:53The host also fired back at House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy,
00:57who mentioned that video games can be the trigger for shootings,
01:00because that makes the most logical sense.
01:02You do know that other countries have video games too, right?
01:06Japan has a huge gaming culture and very few gun deaths.
01:09If video games were so influential, they should make one about Congress called
01:13Do Something.
01:14Meyers closed out his segment, urging Congress to make a difference.
01:18As for our political leaders, the ones who are supposed to be protecting us,
01:23all we say is they need to get their s**t together.
01:26There's been a closer look.
01:28Over on The Daily Show, Trevor Noah also pointed out the importance of improved gun laws and safety measures.
01:33You're not saying get rid of guns.
01:35You're saying try to minimize the chances of this happening.
01:38Try to make it as hard as possible for people to own a gun,
01:41because you only want people who are willing to work hard to own a gun to own a gun.
01:45The host also argued back at those who criticized him, saying he doesn't care about the Second Amendment.
01:50Yes, but the Second Amendment fundamentally, fundamentally, if you think about it,
01:55is about protecting human beings.
01:57That's what it was written. It was about protecting human beings.
02:00Meanwhile, on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host also shared his sentiments on the horrible, senseless tragedies
02:05and the failures of our congressional leaders.
02:07And both parties say, they say one thing, that we're too divided.
02:10Well, here's something we can agree on.
02:13Too many people are being shot with high-powered weapons.
02:16I think we agree on that.
02:19Kimmel points out that according to a poll, 97% of gun owners support universal background checks
02:24and then called out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell,
02:27who won't allow the Senate to vote on a bipartisan bill that would require background checks.
02:32That he needs to drag his bony gray ass back into work to vote on these bills.
02:36Let's start with that thing that we all agree on.
02:39Late-night hosts also went after Trump, who once again blamed the media for all the built-up rage
02:44this country has been suffering.
02:45Following media coverage from the weekend's devastating events, Trump tweeted,
02:48Kimmel fired back at Trump and Republican leaders' assertion that fake news and video games were to blame.
03:08Video games have not been linked to gun violence, but you know what is linked to gun violence?
03:14Guns are linked to gun violence.
03:16The problem isn't fake news.
03:18It's real guns.
03:20And over at The Late Show, Stephen Colbert also fired back at the Republican congressional leaders,
03:24specifically McConnell, or as he puts it, the centerfold of Corruption Monthly,
03:28who he emphasizes receives a large sum in NRA contributions.
03:32You can't put a price on human life, but it doesn't stop Mitch from trying.
03:35The late-night hosts continue to argue that the underlying problem with these shootings
03:40is the racism existing in the country and being fueled by the president.
03:44It's all well and good.
03:45It's all well and good to offer thoughts and prayers, but sometimes you want shouts and swears.
