00:01Today, we're breaking down a major coaching shakeup in the NBA.
00:05In an official statement on Saturday, the New Orleans Pelicans announced the dismissal
00:08of coach Willie Green from his position.
00:11This decision came following a poor performance by the team at the start of the season, where
00:15they lost 10 out of 12 games they played, a record of two wins versus 10 losses.
00:20The spokesperson for this change was Joe Dumars, the executive vice president of basketball
00:25operations for the club.
00:26In the same announcement, Dumars appointed top assistant James Borrego to assume the
00:31position of interim coach for the team.
00:33Borrego is scheduled to lead the team in his first game under his command, on Sunday evening
00:37against the Golden State Warriors.
00:39On the Pelicans' home court, James Borrego has previous experience as a head coach, having
00:45led the Charlotte Hornets for four full seasons, from 2018 until 2022.
00:50He also served as the interim head coach for the Orlando Magic during part of the 2014
00:562015-2015 season.
00:58As for Willie Green's coaching career, he started his career as an assistant head coach under
01:03Monty Williams with the Phoenix Suns in 2019.
01:06He remained in this position for three seasons, 2019-2021.
01:12One of the most notable being the 2020-2021 season, when the Suns reached the NBA Finals.
01:19Green then got his first opportunity as a head coach in 2021, when he was appointed by David
01:24Griffin, the former president of basketball operations for the Pelicans at the time.
01:29During his tenure, which spanned more than four seasons, Green recorded an overall record
01:34of 150 wins against 190 losses.
01:37Despite that, Green led the Pelicans to the playoffs twice.
01:40In 2022, where they were eliminated in the first round by the Phoenix Suns, and in 2024, where
01:49they were again eliminated in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team also
01:54participated in the Western Conference play-in tournament in 2023, but was eliminated in it
01:59by the Oklahoma City Thunder as well.
02:01It is mentioned that Joe Dumars was appointed this year to replace David Griffin as executive
02:05vice president of basketball operations.
02:08During the offseason, Dumars decided to stick with Green, who was about to begin the final
02:13season of his contract.
02:14However, the team started the regular season with a streak of six consecutive losses, which
02:19included three losses by a margin of more than 30 points.
02:22It seemed that Green began to restore balance to the team when they won two consecutive games,
02:27but then they returned to losing four games in a row, the last of which was a defeat, with
02:32a score of 104-118 at the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers, within the framework of the NBA Cup
02:39tournament on Friday night, ultimately leading to the decision to dismiss him.
02:43So, was this a necessary change, or did the Pelicans make a premature decision?
