00:18Meet Kanagiswere Muniandi, better known as Teacher Jasleen
00:24An educator who bridges the gap with her students by speaking to them in Mandarin
00:29哇,这么厉害哦
00:31为什么我使用 Mandarin is because most of them are Mandarin
00:33I try to bond with them
00:36完蛋
00:37If I speak your language, you feel much more closer with me
00:41什么 foods that I'm healthy?
00:43ice cream
00:44ice cream, I love it
00:45Apart from connecting with her students, she says switching to Mandarin
00:50also helps her students grasp certain terms more easily, making lessons clearer
00:55One particular student stands out to Jasleen
01:00Because he couldn't speak any Bahasa, his English was not also very good
01:05so I can only communicate to him in Mandarin
01:07So that really helped me to teach him
01:10He will also ask questions if he don't understand
01:12And then finally, in his UPSR, he's got A, you know
01:16Jasleen's fluency in Mandarin is certainly a reflection of multicultural Malaysia
01:22But how did she become so fluent?
01:26Jasleen reveals she studied in a Chinese medium primary school
01:29Today, she's able to draw on her own experiences
01:33to help her non-Chinese students navigate the challenges of studying in these schools
01:38One of my students, right, one Malay student
01:41Last year, he went into Standard 1
01:44Then he was struggling
01:45Then the mother come and talk to me
01:47She was literally in tears
01:49Because she was so stressed about it, you know, getting frequent calls from the teachers
01:54Because sometimes it really hits
01:56Like why my son cannot do it
01:58So as an Indian, he went to the Chinese school
02:01I assured her, please don't be
02:04It's just a phrase
02:05Give him time
02:07Then also confidence
02:08Just encourage him
02:10Slowly he'll be okay
02:11Jasleen credits her own school teachers for inspiring her to become an educator
02:16Their dedication to her academic success, co-curricular pursuits, and overall well-being
02:22Left a lasting impression on her
02:24And just as her teachers once touched her life
02:28She now hopes to make a difference in her own students
02:32I really hope they find their passion in learning
02:35Not only now, but for future days
02:38No matter in what they're doing, I hope they find their passion in doing it
02:41When I walk on the street, there will be always students calling out to me
02:46Teacher Jess, what, already grow up, taller than me
02:49They'll chit-chat with me
02:51We sometimes even go out for a meal together
02:53I think the one I have with them, very rewarding
02:56Tivia Ragu and Sheila Vajian, FMT
