00:01:30Check this out, man.
00:01:40They got everything here.
00:01:42All the Joes.
00:01:43Joe Burrow.
00:01:44Joe Namath.
00:01:45Joe Montana.
00:01:47Crazy.
00:01:48Like stepping back in time.
00:01:49Look, there's Joe Cool's card right there.
00:01:52You mean Joe Montana?
00:01:53Nah, man.
00:01:54Joe Burrow.
00:01:55That's Joe Cool's card right there.
00:01:57For what it's worth, Joe Burrow did kind of rip off Joe Montana's nickname.
00:02:01Oh, yeah?
00:02:02Yeah.
00:02:03Joe Cool was Joe Montana's nickname when he played for the Niners.
00:02:07Except unlike the new Joe Cool, Joe Montana backed it up with four Super Bowl rings.
00:02:12Really?
00:02:13Joe Burrow?
00:02:14Take the name just like that?
00:02:16Well, I doubt he did it on purpose.
00:02:19Maybe the Bengals' PR team poached it or something.
00:02:22Is Harrison boring you two with history lessons?
00:02:25Nah, man.
00:02:26We're just talking.
00:02:27All right.
00:02:28Just want to make sure.
00:02:30See, he can be a little too free with a lecture sometimes.
00:02:32Just lectures?
00:02:33That's funny.
00:02:35Yeah, I call him Yaley, because he talks like he's from Yale or someplace or another.
00:02:39But one thing's for dang sure, and the man does know his sports.
00:02:42Hey, you got any baseball cards?
00:02:43Practically the whole Hall of Fame.
00:02:45We even got some of the new guys up today.
00:02:47Otani, Trout.
00:02:49Anyone in particular you're looking for?
00:02:50Nah, just checking things out.
00:02:52Well, we have some up here.
00:02:54You can look around the store.
00:02:56We even got Pete Rose.
00:02:58Poor Charlie Hustle got canceled before there was even a word for it.
00:03:01So I'm interviewed once.
00:03:03What do you mean he got canceled?
00:03:05He got blackballed.
00:03:06They won't let him into the Hall of Fame because he gambled.
00:03:09Gambling?
00:03:10For that?
00:03:11Yeah.
00:03:12Every sport has gaming guys now.
00:03:14That's crazy.
00:03:15It's a little more complicated than that.
00:03:18I think keeping a guy out of the Hall of Fame for that, too austere for me.
00:03:23Austere?
00:03:25What does that mean?
00:03:27It means Harrison's being all Yaley again.
00:03:29No, really.
00:03:31What's it mean?
00:03:32It means too tough.
00:03:34Too hardcore.
00:03:35Got it.
00:03:37Hey, man.
00:03:38We got to roll.
00:03:39Got some cool stuff here.
00:03:41I'll be back.
00:03:42Yeah.
00:03:42Thanks for the info.
00:03:44Anytime.
00:03:46See what I'm saying?
00:03:48You bored those guys with the elections.
00:03:50Sounded like they appreciated the information to me.
00:03:53Nah, he was just being polite.
00:03:55Next time, just talk like a normal person, all right?
00:03:59So we've got to move some of this merchandise.
00:04:02Yes, sir.
00:04:02Living the life, huh?
00:04:27All the books you can read and no one to distract you anymore.
00:04:36All you've lost is everything else.
00:04:39They've all moved on and moved out, leaving behind the fallen warrior.
00:04:55Well, read up, you warrior of old.
00:04:59Don't bore distractions except your own voice.
00:05:03All right, everyone.
00:05:32Jalen, take your seat.
00:05:34Yes, Jalen.
00:05:35Kennedy is very impressed.
00:05:36Take your seat.
00:05:38Hey, that was rude.
00:05:39I was just getting to the punchline.
00:05:42Oh, really?
00:05:43Well, why don't you share your joke with the rest of the class, Mr. Funny Guy?
00:05:47I can't with all y'all censorship going on around here.
00:05:51We'll tell you after class.
00:05:53It'll bust you up.
00:05:55Nice.
00:05:55I think that's what they call a teaser.
00:05:58Now, before we get started, I did not get any suggestions for next week's seminar.
00:06:02Does anyone have any suggestions for the guest speaker?
00:06:11No ideas for the guest speaker.
00:06:14All right.
00:06:15Well, I'll lead one by tomorrow unless you guys want to do another lesson that day.
00:06:18So, what do you think of asking that guy from the sports card store?
00:06:30To be the guest speaker in Willis' class?
00:06:33Yeah.
00:06:34He seems cool.
00:06:35He likes the thought.
00:06:37Why not?
00:06:38Right?
00:06:39It means listening to her for another hour.
00:06:41Yeah.
00:06:41Hey, you want to roll by there now?
00:06:43See if he's up for it?
00:06:44You mean the sports card shop?
00:06:46Yeah.
00:06:47Before your practice.
00:06:48Yeah.
00:06:48Let's do it.
00:06:49Let's go knock that out.
00:06:53Hey, man.
00:06:55Welcome back.
00:06:56We got a question for you.
00:06:58I hope I can answer it.
00:07:00Are you challenging me to sports trivia?
00:07:02Or is this an episode of Stump the Clerk at the Sports Store?
00:07:06No, man.
00:07:07We just wanted to see if you'd like to come and speak to our class.
00:07:10Your class?
00:07:11Yeah.
00:07:12Our high school class?
00:07:13Revere High?
00:07:15I've heard of it.
00:07:17One of those elite public high schools?
00:07:20Yeah.
00:07:20Something like that.
00:07:21We got small class sizes.
00:07:23Advantages like that.
00:07:25Some people got in through high test scores.
00:07:27I got in through sports.
00:07:29I got in because they felt sorry for me.
00:07:31Disadvantaged.
00:07:33And what is the reason for me speaking to your class?
00:07:37Each month we have a seminar.
00:07:38Our teacher asks us to pick a guest speaker.
00:07:41You know, to come in and talk.
00:07:42Guest speaker.
00:07:46Seminar.
00:07:47At a high school?
00:07:48Bro, the teacher's lazy, alright?
00:07:51She gets to go hang out in the teacher's lounge and play on her phone for an hour.
00:07:56You don't give any quarter, do you?
00:07:58Say what?
00:07:59You call people out.
00:08:00Straight up.
00:08:01Don't you?
00:08:02Yeah, man.
00:08:03Keep it real.
00:08:05Anyway, what do you think?
00:08:06So they just let anyone come and speak for an hour?
00:08:10Gotta let them do a formal background check.
00:08:13You know, so they make sure that you're not some criminal.
00:08:15That you're okay to come in and speak about something going on in the community.
00:08:19I see.
00:08:21Like Jalen said, teacher's lazy.
00:08:23We're lazy too.
00:08:24We get an hour off.
00:08:26Wow.
00:08:27What a compliment.
00:08:28Way to build a guy up.
00:08:30I don't mean it like that.
00:08:31We'll listen to what you have to say, obviously.
00:08:33Obviously.
00:08:34So what do you say?
00:08:35I think I need to mull it over.
00:08:38That's what I think.
00:08:41That's cool.
00:08:42No problem.
00:08:43Why don't I shoot you a text?
00:08:45And you can text me back if you want to do it.
00:08:46Sure.
00:08:48Fair enough.
00:08:49Here's my card.
00:08:54There you go.
00:08:55Just sent it to you.
00:08:56My name's Jalen, by the way.
00:08:58Nice to meet you, Jalen.
00:08:59Harrison Jones.
00:09:00And Mike.
00:09:01Nice to meet you, Mike.
00:09:03But seriously, you got a lot of knowledge about sports and whatever.
00:09:06You could just come in and talk to the class about the store and what it does for the community.
00:09:11Whatever.
00:09:12That's it, huh?
00:09:14That's it.
00:09:15That's the deal.
00:09:16You gotta let them do the background check first.
00:09:18You know, you gotta talk to Miss Willis.
00:09:20Make sure that you're okay to talk to the class.
00:09:23Miss Willis would be your teacher at Revere High?
00:09:26That's the one.
00:09:27The one and only.
00:09:30Look, I appreciate the thought.
00:09:32Like I said, I'd think it over.
00:09:34But I would have to talk to your teacher first.
00:09:37Not that I don't trust you or anything.
00:09:39Nah.
00:09:40It's cool.
00:09:41Understandable.
00:09:42Thing is, we need to know tonight.
00:09:44Cause if we don't give her a name tomorrow, she won't have the seminar.
00:09:49Well, give us one word.
00:09:51Oh, we wouldn't want any learning to happen, would we?
00:09:54Bro, it ain't like that.
00:09:56It's not like that.
00:09:57I meant to say, I know everyone would like you.
00:09:58You're cool.
00:09:59Different.
00:10:00I hope you'll think about it.
00:10:01Let us know, alright?
00:10:02You got it.
00:10:03Hey, are you guys ever going to buy something in here?
00:10:04Bro, you gotta have as much bank as these athletes to buy what you're selling.
00:10:09I don't know, maybe the class could do some crowdfunding or something.
00:10:10I'm kidding.
00:10:11Good day, gentlemen.
00:10:12Later.
00:10:13All right, man.
00:10:14What do you think, Joe DiMaggio?
00:10:15Quite the irony, isn't it?
00:10:16Maybe I should consult the other outfield.
00:10:17I don't know.
00:10:18I don't know.
00:10:19I don't know.
00:10:20I don't know.
00:10:21I don't know.
00:10:22I don't know.
00:10:23I don't know.
00:10:24I don't know.
00:10:25I don't know.
00:10:26I don't know.
00:10:27You got it.
00:10:28Hey, are you guys ever going to buy something in here?
00:10:30Bro, you gotta have as much bank as these athletes to buy what you're selling.
00:10:33I don't know.
00:10:34Maybe the class can do some crowdfunding or something.
00:10:35I'm kidding.
00:10:36Good day, gentlemen.
00:10:37Thank you to everyone who turned in your essays on time.
00:11:02I should say everyone except for two of you, those who didn't, I'll need to see you after
00:11:06class.
00:11:07I'm not going to call you out even though maybe I should.
00:11:09Hey, I was lining up our guest seminar speaker.
00:11:13That's not an excuse.
00:11:15Okay, so who did you come up with for the guest speaker?
00:11:17Guy who works at a sports card store.
00:11:20I see.
00:11:23And why did you choose this great man of the sports world?
00:11:27He's cool.
00:11:28He's cool.
00:11:29Seriously.
00:11:30He's smart, knows a lot about sports and stuff.
00:11:34Sports and stuff.
00:11:36What's wrong with sports?
00:11:38Nothing.
00:11:39We all respect your accomplishments in that area, Jalen.
00:11:43I'm just trying to figure out how this helps all of us.
00:11:46You said we could invite anyone from the community, right?
00:11:49That's right.
00:11:50So he's going to talk to us about sports.
00:11:53And?
00:11:54And these cool athletes, their life stories, what it's like working there, all that stuff.
00:12:00You both met him?
00:12:02Yup.
00:12:03I hope you're not inviting him here just to make fun of him because that's messed up.
00:12:09Nah, it ain't like that.
00:12:10He's cool.
00:12:11Ain't I a good citizen?
00:12:14Okay, that's enough.
00:12:15Have him contact me and I'll set it up for next week.
00:12:18We'll broaden our horizons and learn a bit more about sports.
00:12:22There you go.
00:12:23That's the spirit.
00:12:25Thank you for the encouragement.
00:12:29All right.
00:12:32Let's get started.
00:12:33Open your books to page 145.
00:12:40How do you come up with these prices?
00:12:42I don't, sir.
00:12:43I just work here.
00:12:44A hundred bucks for a rookie Mike Schmidt.
00:12:46Mike Schmidt?
00:12:47I barely even remember the guy.
00:12:49I think if you look around, you'd find that prices are very competitive.
00:12:53Oh, yeah.
00:12:54Maybe I should look around.
00:12:55I mean, I'm from Philly and I'm not shelling out a hundred bucks for a Mike Schmidt.
00:12:59Could you afford this?
00:13:02It depends on the person, sir.
00:13:05Yeah, I know that.
00:13:06That's why I'm asking you.
00:13:07Could you afford this?
00:13:08I'm not sure how to answer you, sir.
00:13:11Well, how about an honest answer?
00:13:13No, I couldn't.
00:13:14But I'm not you.
00:13:15Probably life has smiled more upon you.
00:13:16What's that supposed to mean?
00:13:17It means that you probably make more money than me.
00:13:18Is that the answer you're looking for?
00:13:19Never mind.
00:13:20I guess I'll shop online.
00:13:21Sorry I couldn't reel him in.
00:13:22Sorry I couldn't reel him in.
00:13:23That's alright.
00:13:24You're getting better.
00:13:25Say, uh, are you gonna go through with it?
00:13:26Go give a talk at that school?
00:13:27Yeah, I told them I would.
00:13:28I'd be there.
00:13:29Isn't it wild how they found you like that?
00:13:41That's all right. You're getting better.
00:13:45Say, are you going to go through with it? Go give a talk at that school?
00:13:50Yeah, I told them I would. I'd be there.
00:13:53Isn't it wild how they found you like that? Just discovered you right here in this little store?
00:13:58Yeah, some discovery.
00:14:01They don't realize they're in for quite a lesson. And I guess not about sports cards either.
00:14:05True. I'm going to give them my best for the hour I'm there.
00:14:11Are you worried about how they're going to react?
00:14:16You mean to my talk?
00:14:18You know, everything you've been through.
00:14:20Well, I figure I'd just let the chips fall where they may.
00:14:25So when they do a background check, they take all of me. Warts and all.
00:14:31Well, I can tell you one thing. You're one brave dude.
00:14:35Never tell you I admire you.
00:14:37Oh yeah?
00:14:38Everything you've been through and all?
00:14:39Well, I'm sorry life's itchy here.
00:14:43This place is a blessing, a haven for me.
00:14:48And being among all the former greats, it's inspiring in some way.
00:14:54Well, good luck with those kids.
00:14:57And good luck to those kids too, because they have no idea what they're in for.
00:15:00Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
00:15:18Rejoice, and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven.
00:15:25For in the same way, they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
00:15:29Lord, may you grant me the words to guide and inspire these young people.
00:15:45So, may you make this last hurrah worthy in your eyes.
00:15:57Amen.
00:15:58All right, everyone, this is Mr. Harrison Jones.
00:16:08Jalen and Mike met him and were impressed.
00:16:11And Mr. Jones was kind enough to share some of his time with us today.
00:16:14I've enjoyed speaking to him, and I'm sure you will too.
00:16:17But I'll let him introduce himself.
00:16:19But before that, let's give him a big round of applause.
00:16:20Thanks to these two gentlemen for the invitation to your school.
00:16:26Here's what I'd like everyone to do.
00:16:29I'm going to hand each of you a slip of paper.
00:16:31I want you to write down the topics that you want to discuss today.
00:16:35We'll pull out those three slips, and those will be the topics we'll talk about for the hour.
00:16:41Does that sound okay?
00:16:42Here are your slips of paper.
00:16:45Remember, please write your topics on those and toss them into the cap.
00:16:59All right.
00:17:00Now all I need is a person of impeccable character to choose our topics.
00:17:07How about you?
00:17:08You look honest.
00:17:09Okay, sure.
00:17:10All right.
00:17:13Let's call them out one at a time.
00:17:15Topic number one.
00:17:21Joy.
00:17:22Nice thought.
00:17:24All right.
00:17:28Joy.
00:17:31All right.
00:17:32Number two.
00:17:35Topic number two.
00:17:38Debate.
00:17:40Interesting.
00:17:41A little different.
00:17:42Okay.
00:17:44Let's see.
00:17:44All right.
00:17:47Some dates.
00:17:49All right.
00:17:51And the grand finale.
00:17:53Number three.
00:17:58Topic number three.
00:18:01Patrick Mahomes.
00:18:02Three very different topics.
00:18:07Now that's what I call a variety pack.
00:18:12I didn't catch your name.
00:18:14Oh, it's Gabriella, but I go by Gabby.
00:18:16Thank you, Gabby.
00:18:18Patrick.
00:18:19I'm just going to put Pat Mahomes, just for short.
00:18:26Mahomes.
00:18:27All right.
00:18:30All right.
00:18:31So, okay.
00:18:33Okay.
00:18:33See, Miss Willis left me a seating chart here, so I'll put this to good use.
00:18:40All right.
00:18:40Now, let's see why you chose these topics.
00:18:45Time to fess up.
00:18:46Okay, so who chose joy?
00:18:52And Hannah, why did you choose joy?
00:18:55I mean, it's a good thing to have, right?
00:18:59Joy?
00:19:00Yes, it certainly is, no doubt.
00:19:03I'm just interested in why was that your topic of choice?
00:19:09My beliefs, my faith, tell me to look for joy and give joy where I can.
00:19:15Those are beautiful thoughts and beautifully said.
00:19:18We'll take up your topic first in just a moment.
00:19:22And now, topic number two is debate.
00:19:26A little bleep topic, if you ask me.
00:19:30Um, who chose debate?
00:19:32I did.
00:19:33And why was that your topic, your choice?
00:19:36Well, I'm in speech and debate, and we have a really big tournament coming up this weekend.
00:19:41Hmm.
00:19:42Man, that's dumb.
00:19:43That means nothing to everyone else, girl.
00:19:46It's not dumb, and don't call me girl, delinquent.
00:19:49Ugh.
00:19:50Oh, hold on, hold on, hold on.
00:19:52Gabby, that was a fine topic.
00:19:55Mike?
00:19:56You have a fine head on your shoulders.
00:19:59For one thing, you certainly have an eye for telling, though I wouldn't be here.
00:20:03Because, you see, you thought I was coming to talk about sports and such, and we'll get into that.
00:20:09But we're also going to drill down some real issues.
00:20:12Things you don't talk about much in school today.
00:20:15We're going to talk about that today.
00:20:17I promise.
00:20:18And now, finally, Patrick Mahomes.
00:20:25Who chose this one?
00:20:27That was me, all the way.
00:20:29And why Patrick Mahomes?
00:20:32Because he's the best, and I'm coming right behind him.
00:20:36You wish.
00:20:37You need to check the stat sheet.
00:20:39I'm on track.
00:20:40Just need some more help out there on the field.
00:20:42So, you're the quarterback here.
00:20:46Yeah, bro.
00:20:47Don't you see the news?
00:20:49I thought you knew all about sports.
00:20:51Well, high school football doesn't exactly generate a lot of sports cards.
00:20:55But that's a nice topic you chose.
00:20:59That would be fine to work with.
00:21:01Now, what do you think of when you think of joy?
00:21:07Come on now.
00:21:08Don't let Hannah carry the load here.
00:21:12What about you?
00:21:15Maya, what are your thoughts on joy?
00:21:19I don't know.
00:21:20That it's a good thing?
00:21:22I'd like you to tell me why.
00:21:23Because, you see, what we're going to do today is what they call the Socratic method.
00:21:29I am going to ply you with questions, a lot of questions,
00:21:32so that the truth and the answers will come from you and not from me.
00:21:39So, asking again, drilling down, why is joy good for us?
00:21:46I guess because without it, we couldn't get through life?
00:21:49Now, that's an answer worthy of Socrates.
00:21:52Socrates, joy is essential to life.
00:21:57Now, who in here has joy?
00:22:01Raise your hand.
00:22:01Be honest.
00:22:03Well, not a lot of people proclaiming joy today?
00:22:07Socrates, or you're just shy?
00:22:12Or you're struggling with joy?
00:22:17I'll tell you what I think.
00:22:19Mike, good.
00:22:21Tell us.
00:22:22There's a lot of bad stuff swirling around.
00:22:25It infects you, you know?
00:22:26I mean, I'm happy enough, but there's a lot of crazy stuff you've got to power through.
00:22:31It takes a lot out of you.
00:22:34Enough bad stuff to steal your joy?
00:22:37I guess you could put it that way.
00:22:40And what bad stuff are you talking about in your life?
00:22:44We're getting a little personal now.
00:22:48Hey, you invited me.
00:22:50I'm just doing my thing like I said I would.
00:22:53It's just, people are crazy.
00:22:55Always after you to be crazy.
00:22:58You are crazy, fool.
00:22:59You better watch your mouth.
00:23:01Or what?
00:23:02Your pimp slapped me?
00:23:04Hold on, hold on.
00:23:06Let's keep it civil.
00:23:08First, Mike, then Maya.
00:23:10Tell me more, Mike.
00:23:12What crazy stuff are you talking about?
00:23:15You know, I got feelings, too.
00:23:17People even in class here, they look at me and they judge me by my rap sheet, my history.
00:23:22But they got no idea about the real me.
00:23:25You got the cheerleader here, the preacher's daughter there, Maya flapping her mouth.
00:23:28They all think they're better.
00:23:30They all judge me.
00:23:32But they ain't my judge.
00:23:33Aren't?
00:23:34Aren't my judge.
00:23:35Judge, not lest he be judged, right?
00:23:39Well, actually, we're supposed to judge.
00:23:44Otherwise, there wouldn't be any right or wrong.
00:23:46How do you figure?
00:23:47Well, think about it.
00:23:49If we can't judge, there isn't any right or wrong.
00:23:53Now, you mentioned judge, not lest he be judged.
00:23:56We all know Jesus Christ said that.
00:23:59There was an early Christian writer named Tertullian who pointed out something.
00:24:03When Jesus said, judge not lest ye be judged, he wasn't telling us not to judge.
00:24:09He was telling us not to be hypocrites.
00:24:12He was telling us not to judge people unless we hold ourselves to those same standards.
00:24:19Tertullian said, Tertullian said Jesus wasn't telling us not to judge.
00:24:24In fact, he was telling us how to judge.
00:24:28That's pretty deep.
00:24:31Well, you certainly have deep waters flowing through you, too.
00:24:37Look, people can't judge when they don't know.
00:24:40When they got no idea what you've gone through.
00:24:42All we got from the old papa was his name, which is garbage, because he's doing 20 years.
00:24:50Beat my mama so bad.
00:24:52I remember some of it from when I was three, four years old.
00:24:56Frijoles, tortillas.
00:24:58He would call out for his food, and when it didn't come fast enough, bam.
00:25:02You want to know why I'm not out there playing with Jalen, even with my speed?
00:25:06It's because he broke this arm when I was five.
00:25:10I knocked over a bottle of Modelo, and he threw me like a loaf of bread into the wall,
00:25:15then whacked me until mama could pull him off of me.
00:25:18And 20 years didn't come until three years later, after he took up with some stupid woman
00:25:22who just wanted a man in the house.
00:25:25Her kids don't matter.
00:25:26They never matter.
00:25:28I ain't gonna get hit no more.
00:25:30It's that simple.
00:25:32Hit me, I hit back, but harder.
00:25:35That kid, he turned bright red.
00:25:45He just stood there, melting.
00:25:47Little twerp.
00:25:48You know, they just come in, strutting around like peacocks,
00:25:51thinking they got it all figured out, and then all of a sudden, they don't.
00:25:55What did he do to get on your bad list?
00:25:58He's just a know-it-all.
00:25:59He's just always voicing his loud opinion, and like, thinks he's a Rhodes Scholar or something.
00:26:03He's just arrogant.
00:26:06Kids like that need to be taken down a peg or two, you know?
00:26:08Introduce them to reality.
00:26:10So I just make fun of him a little bit, you know?
00:26:13Poke fun at what he's looking at on this phone, or, you know, what he's wearing, you know?
00:26:19Yeah.
00:26:20I know how it goes.
00:26:21Yeah.
00:26:22That Tessa Mays, she's been going off lately, rolling her eyes and talking back.
00:26:29I've got to figure out how to deal with her.
00:26:32See?
00:26:33We're the end of the line, okay?
00:26:35Kids come here thinking they have everything figured out, and they think,
00:26:39oh, I can do anything.
00:26:41I can be anything.
00:26:42And then when they figure out they've been lied to by all these sunshine sellers,
00:26:45they take it out on us.
00:26:47Us!
00:26:47When we're the ones, just telling them the truth.
00:26:51Hmm.
00:26:53Some of them have tough backgrounds.
00:26:56I feel bad for them at times.
00:26:59Hmm.
00:27:00Not bad enough not to gossip.
00:27:04You got a point.
00:27:05A guilty pleasure, I guess.
00:27:08Hey, I need an outlet, too.
00:27:10Maya, you mentioned being slapped.
00:27:15Why did you say that?
00:27:17Because macho man Mike there can say where he is and where he's from.
00:27:23And that's how I see him.
00:27:25A thug.
00:27:26He tries to be the tough guy all the time.
00:27:30It's real tiring, too.
00:27:32Look, he's not the only one in there who's felt pain, you know.
00:27:36I didn't have it easy, neither.
00:27:38To me, who has?
00:27:39Daniel, thanks for joining in.
00:27:46I mean, who in here has had it easy?
00:27:50I mean, look around.
00:27:51Look at what we're dealing with here.
00:27:53Bo-ho, teacher's pet.
00:27:55Hey, don't call him that.
00:27:58Preacher's kid, butt out.
00:28:00You gonna step in here or you're just gonna enjoy the show?
00:28:01Yes, in a moment.
00:28:04I see there are some things that need to be worked out here.
00:28:07And apparently no one has ever tried.
00:28:09Well, if I speak my mind, I'll get my bucket after school or in a dark alley or whatever.
00:28:17So, maybe it's best I just keep my mouth shut, okay?
00:28:20No one's gonna hurt you.
00:28:22Well, I'm not so sure.
00:28:24Mike is gonna come out of this conversation with a new respect for you and everyone else.
00:28:31Daniel, finish your thoughts you just had.
00:28:35How do we find joy?
00:28:36I didn't know I was supposed to go looking for it.
00:28:39Yes, we do.
00:28:41Joy's not gonna come and follow us like some stray dog following us home.
00:28:46We have to go look for it.
00:28:47We have to find it.
00:28:49I'm just, you know, pretty happy doing my thing.
00:28:52Which is?
00:28:54You know, gaming, doing homework.
00:28:57Oh, be honest, Daniel.
00:28:59You're the class brains.
00:29:01You have the top marks in all of your classes.
00:29:03You've got your ticket punched.
00:29:06You have nothing to worry about.
00:29:08Oh, really?
00:29:09Yes, really.
00:29:11You're gonna head out of this place and hire people like us to serve you lattes and pizzas.
00:29:17Huh.
00:29:18I do like me lattes and pizzas.
00:29:20Don't be a jerk, man.
00:29:22I didn't, I didn't mean it like that.
00:29:27What I'm trying to say is, no one here has had it easy.
00:29:31Why do you say that?
00:29:35Yes, Ethan.
00:29:36I have to go to the bathroom?
00:29:37Well, you better go.
00:29:42Let's circle back to Daniel, who I now know as the star student here.
00:29:47Why did you say no one has it great?
00:29:49Look, this isn't easy to talk about in front of everyone.
00:29:56You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to.
00:29:59It's up to you.
00:30:01It's just...
00:30:01Everyone thinks that they can pick on the class nerd.
00:30:08I'm the one guy that everyone can tee off on.
00:30:11You're not a nerd.
00:30:12He kind of is, sir.
00:30:15A little bit.
00:30:16See?
00:30:17This is what I'm talking about.
00:30:19You know, you're not supposed to judge based on people's race or lifestyle or whatever.
00:30:24But, if you're smart, hey, he's a nerd.
00:30:27Open fire.
00:30:28Come on, man.
00:30:29Lighten up.
00:30:31We were just joking.
00:30:33You think it's funny that I don't have as many friends as you?
00:30:37Or that I'll never be popular?
00:30:41You all laughed.
00:30:43But you don't know what it's like to be alone.
00:30:45And being picked on just for trying to be good at something.
00:30:53Daniel, did it ever occur to you that people do that because they envy what you have?
00:31:02Uh, no.
00:31:04How does that help me?
00:31:07Yeah, right.
00:31:09Haley.
00:31:12You want to know what's worse?
00:31:14How about not being noticed at all?
00:31:15Like a bug that gets stepped on every day.
00:31:18She speaks?
00:31:19This is crazy.
00:31:20Sir, you got her to speak.
00:31:24She's never said anything before now.
00:31:26Why should I?
00:31:26Because you've got everything so figured out.
00:31:28Because you're super chocked.
00:31:30Hold on.
00:31:31Hold on.
00:31:32Haley.
00:31:33What is joy to you?
00:31:35Being alive.
00:31:36Beating the darkness.
00:31:37What do you mean?
00:31:38Darkness is out there.
00:31:40It's after all of us.
00:31:42I go home.
00:31:43No mom.
00:31:43No dad.
00:31:44Ever.
00:31:44And I hear the darkness telling you that you're all alone and that you'll always be alone.
00:31:48Haley, you're never alone.
00:31:53Yeah, I know.
00:31:54I've got my best friend stashed and waiting for me at home.
00:31:57I've got two boyfriends who love me and will never leave me.
00:32:00Jack Daniels.
00:32:01Jim Beam.
00:32:02That is some good stuff right there.
00:32:05Enough.
00:32:07Haley, why do you say you're alone?
00:32:10Because I am.
00:32:11Because I'm a freak.
00:32:12That's how everyone here looks at me.
00:32:13Like a freak.
00:32:13Can't get along with people.
00:32:16No friends except other rejects.
00:32:18No future.
00:32:20That's why you start hating yourself.
00:32:22Haley, you don't need to-
00:32:24To do what?
00:32:24Tell you how I feel?
00:32:26When the darkness tells you you're nothing, maybe you are nothing.
00:32:30Hating yourself, man?
00:32:31That's just plain crazy.
00:32:32Malik, stop that.
00:32:34People say that because they're sad.
00:32:36Come on.
00:32:37They think that way because they're crazy.
00:32:38Well, I think you're crazy!
00:32:40Stop it.
00:32:41Both of you.
00:32:42But, Haley, you're a beautiful creation and you're not alone.
00:32:49You're never alone.
00:32:52That's who?
00:32:54Says the higher power.
00:32:56Says the one who made us and loved us.
00:32:59Where we can find our hope and joy.
00:33:02Much joy.
00:33:03Much joy.
00:33:12All right, I want everyone for the next five minutes to write down a paragraph of what they think of joy.
00:33:20I'll be right back.
00:33:21Uh, Ethan, come with me.
00:33:23Tell me what happened.
00:33:36It's nothing.
00:33:37My hair's just messed up.
00:33:39You can tell me what happened.
00:33:40Trust me.
00:33:43A couple of guys were hanging out in the bathroom.
00:33:46They like to prank kids.
00:33:47So, what did they do?
00:33:51It's nothing.
00:33:52Can I go back and go?
00:33:52What did they do?
00:33:54They gave me a swirly, all right?
00:33:57You mean they put your head in their toilet and flushed?
00:34:01Yes.
00:34:03All right.
00:34:04Go back into class.
00:34:06Write a paragraph on joy.
00:34:08Go in.
00:34:08Don't look back.
00:34:09Go.
00:34:10You guys, it was awesome, wasn't it?
00:34:18You was all crying.
00:34:19How much money did you get?
00:34:20I say 20.
00:34:2120?
00:34:22That's it?
00:34:23Really?
00:34:23Come on.
00:34:24I was hoping maybe next week.
00:34:25Yeah, yeah, I know.
00:34:26Great.
00:34:27Just what I needed.
00:34:29Hey, can you help me out here?
00:34:32Yeah, what's up?
00:34:33I just need something that's stuck there.
00:34:36It's behind the seat.
00:34:37Can you grab it for me?
00:34:39Get what?
00:34:39Yeah.
00:34:39You want me to be talking?
00:34:40Whoa, here, bro.
00:34:41Hold on.
00:34:42You just can't fuck that.
00:34:44You in there.
00:34:46You want some of this?
00:34:50What are you doing?
00:34:52If you ever touched that kid that was just in here,
00:34:56you ever say anything to him or say anything bad about him,
00:35:00I got you.
00:35:02I'll upload this, and you'll be international in a day.
00:35:05All over social media.
00:35:08They're going to call you Mr. Swirly.
00:35:09Because that's what I'm going to name the video.
00:35:13Don't put me in.
00:35:14Don't put me in.
00:35:16Don't mess with me, boys.
00:35:18I got things you don't want to see.
00:35:20Who are you?
00:35:21You can't be doing that.
00:35:22Oh, really?
00:35:23My phone says I just did.
00:35:28You can't do that.
00:35:30Do you see any cameras in here?
00:35:32No.
00:35:32It's a bathroom.
00:35:34There you go.
00:35:38Goodbye for now, boys.
00:35:41Who was that guy?
00:35:43A teacher?
00:35:43They call me the minister of justice.
00:35:47But you can just call me the minister.
00:35:50All right, everyone done with their paragraphs on joy?
00:36:02Time for our second topic, debate.
00:36:05So, debate is like a boxing match or an MMA bout.
00:36:11But it's really about using ideas and language to gain power, to get an advantage.
00:36:20So, in your tournaments, it's all about the medal or the trophy.
00:36:24But in real life, there's a lot more on the line.
00:36:29What's your favorite TV show or online ad?
00:36:32Anybody.
00:36:33It doesn't have to be Gabby.
00:36:35I like the ad that talks about not being like your parents.
00:36:38The insurance ad?
00:36:39Yeah.
00:36:41Oh, funny.
00:36:42Like, cringe funny.
00:36:44I think Daniel just coined a phrase here.
00:36:47Cringe funny.
00:36:49Got a future giant on Madison Avenue.
00:36:53Thanks.
00:36:54How about rhetoric?
00:36:55Does anyone know any great lines from politics?
00:36:59Now, for my money, the folks with the best political put-downs are the British.
00:37:03Their rhetoric is the best, the tops.
00:37:07So, a few years ago, there was an unpopular prime minister.
00:37:11And a newspaper, one of the newspapers in London, placed a bet that a head of lettuce would last longer than she would as prime minister.
00:37:22Guess what?
00:37:22They were right.
00:37:24They were right.
00:37:25A week later, the prime minister resigned.
00:37:27And on their live stream, the paper placed a wig on the head of lettuce in celebration.
00:37:32Well, I'll give you a couple more examples before I turn it back over to you.
00:37:39How many of you heard of Winston Churchill?
00:37:41Well, three hands, huh?
00:37:47Well, at least Patrick Mahomes is well-known.
00:37:49Winston Churchill was prime minister during World War II, but before that, he was just a member of parliament.
00:37:58One time, he compared the prime minister of the time, Ramsey McDonald, to a circus sideshow called the Boneless Wonder.
00:38:06Now, the Boneless Wonder was a man who was so flexible that he can bend himself into a pretzel.
00:38:14Churchill called McDonald a coward, a boneless wonder.
00:38:19Because he had no backbone.
00:38:21Well, very good.
00:38:23He stood for nothing.
00:38:24That's not right, though.
00:38:26Those circus sideshows with the bearded women and the little short people running around like limpa-loopas?
00:38:31That was messed up.
00:38:33Yes, it was.
00:38:36Except that was the only way those people could earn money.
00:38:39That was the only jobs that were available for them.
00:38:42There were no government programs to help.
00:38:44I still say that was messed up.
00:38:47Yes, it is.
00:38:50You're right.
00:38:51So, remember that the next time you're watching a video of someone getting beat up or a crash or whatever,
00:38:59those are the sideshows of today.
00:39:01Here's one more example of first-rate British rhetoric.
00:39:05The great prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli, happened to be Jewish.
00:39:10One time, a politician decided to bring up his religion during a debate.
00:39:15Back then, the British were very faithful Christians.
00:39:19So, having a Jewish prime minister was as big a deal as us having a black president, maybe bigger.
00:39:26So, it was a real low blow and a cheap shot to bring up this man's faith to win an argument.
00:39:36But Disraeli was ready.
00:39:38He did what Churchill did.
00:39:40He knocked him down with wit.
00:39:42Quote,
00:39:43Yes, I am a Jew.
00:39:45And while the ancestors of the Right Honorable Gentleman were legal savages on an unknown island,
00:39:52mine were priests in the Temple of Solomon.
00:39:57Help me out here, Daniel.
00:39:58What point was he making?
00:40:00That is, people, the Jewish people, gave us the Bible.
00:40:06When Solomon was king, the British people were just basically cavemen.
00:40:11Bingo.
00:40:12And the joke worked.
00:40:14Because the Christians of that time in the UK recognized that their Christian heritage came from the Bible and the Jewish experience.
00:40:24Disraeli's witty comment knocked him right between the eyes.
00:40:27That's cool.
00:40:28So, he was calling them out for being, like, racist?
00:40:32Close.
00:40:33He was exposing their prejudice and hitting them back at the same time, in a funny way.
00:40:39That's a cool story.
00:40:41Well, you know why I'm in the business of cool stories.
00:40:45Now I want to turn it back over to you.
00:40:48I ask that you all think about the debates that you've had.
00:40:52Take some time to think about those, and I want you to share those with us.
00:41:02Hannah.
00:41:02So, I have a story, but maybe it's not one I can tell in school.
00:41:09Well, you know, Hannah, I don't see you as a foul-mouth type.
00:41:14What?
00:41:15Oh, no.
00:41:16I don't mean like that.
00:41:17I mean, it's about my faith.
00:41:21A debate you had about your faith?
00:41:24Yeah.
00:41:25And I don't want to get, like, arrested or something for talking about it in school.
00:41:29You're not going to get arrested.
00:41:32Mom's the word.
00:41:34Tell us your story.
00:41:35You know, I mean, it's not easy having faith these days.
00:41:42Because you can't talk about it, or bring it into school or wherever.
00:41:46You're supposed to leave it at the door.
00:41:48You know, keep your mouth shut or bad things will happen.
00:41:51What kind of bad things?
00:41:53You talk about having debates.
00:41:55I mean, it's a joke.
00:41:57I try to talk about the things that are most important to me, and I'm shut down.
00:42:03Until I'm preachy.
00:42:05Preacher's daughter.
00:42:06Like he said.
00:42:09My faith tells me I should share my beliefs, but I can't.
00:42:13And it's not like I'm trying to put people down or, you know, make them feel bad or anything.
00:42:18I just want to share what's on my heart.
00:42:22Because I think it's important.
00:42:24I think it's the most important thing.
00:42:29I don't think anyone wants to hear that.
00:42:31Maybe it makes people feel bad about themselves.
00:42:34Did you ever think about that?
00:42:36Nope.
00:42:37I get it.
00:42:38But, I mean, I'm not trying to put people down.
00:42:42Some people need to hear it.
00:42:43I mean, they're drowning.
00:42:45And I just get shut down.
00:42:49Everyone like me, and there's a lot of us, we get, like, ridiculed.
00:42:55Picked on.
00:42:56I mean, what you're saying is backwards.
00:43:03It's beyond old school.
00:43:04Nobody I respect in the media or top universities talk like that anymore.
00:43:08It's just not relevant anymore.
00:43:11Daniel, you might be the smartest guy in this class.
00:43:16You might be the smartest guy, like, in the whole class.
00:43:19You might be valedictorian.
00:43:21But to try to make yourself sound educated?
00:43:25I mean, you look up to the wrong people.
00:43:28I mean, don't you think if all the people in the top universities and institutions say the same thing,
00:43:35shouldn't we believe them?
00:43:36I think they're wrong.
00:43:39I mean, I think when you put me down, my Christian faith down, and tell me to be quiet,
00:43:45I mean, they're just preaching a religion of their own.
00:43:48And it's a religion of hate towards people like me.
00:43:52One day, I came to school wearing a dress.
00:43:55Not like a gown for a ball, but just a dress.
00:44:00I'm in a trad wife training group, and we were meeting right after school that day.
00:44:04And it's a group of girls who want to be stay-at-home wives and others.
00:44:10And everyone made fun of me.
00:44:15Everyone stared.
00:44:18The comments were, like, really mean.
00:44:21Princess Bride.
00:44:22White trash in a dress.
00:44:25Just horrible things.
00:44:27I thought you were beautiful.
00:44:31Really cool.
00:44:34I don't know.
00:44:37Some people just cheat.
00:44:40It's not right.
00:44:42You should tune those people out.
00:44:44They got nothing going on.
00:44:45I mean, just look at us.
00:44:49I mean, listen to us.
00:44:50Kids these days.
00:44:52It's like we grew up in a junkyard, you know?
00:44:54We see all these, like, scraps and broken things around us.
00:44:59And we're meant to go through everything and figure out what still works.
00:45:04But everything is broken into pieces.
00:45:08Our families.
00:45:10Our souls.
00:45:11I mean, almost every kid I know at school is battling depression.
00:45:15I mean, I can think of that.
00:45:18They need God in their lives.
00:45:19And I can't even talk about Him.
00:45:28Teachers don't help.
00:45:31Why do you say that?
00:45:32Because they don't.
00:45:34Just make it worse.
00:45:35Teaching is a hard job.
00:45:40Teachers deserve respect.
00:45:42They should earn it, right?
00:45:44Shouldn't they earn it?
00:45:46I suppose this is two-way street.
00:45:48Teaching is about having power and trust.
00:45:52Do you have problems?
00:45:55When a teacher likes to get a big laugh by putting you down,
00:45:58they lose your respect.
00:46:01Lost with me.
00:46:02Do you want to share something?
00:46:03I just think that a lot of us are depressed because the adults in our lives are checked out.
00:46:09Parents are checked out.
00:46:11For kids who even have parents.
00:46:14When you come to school and the teachers don't help, they just pile on.
00:46:18They're not all bad.
00:46:19I mean...
00:46:21They're not bad to you.
00:46:22You're pretty and popular.
00:46:24You've got money.
00:46:26Who's going to say anything bad to you?
00:46:28People like me.
00:46:30Like the gum you step on and want to pick off your shoe.
00:46:33Who taught you to think like that about yourself?
00:46:36A teacher at this school, for one.
00:46:39I won't call her out because I don't want any more trouble than I already got.
00:46:42What'd she do?
00:46:43She saw me talking to this girl and we were just talking, you know?
00:46:51I think she thought it'd be funny to tease me about it.
00:46:54Oh, Ethan.
00:46:55You're becoming a real player.
00:46:58Just for laughs.
00:47:00The other kids laughed.
00:47:02She keeps going.
00:47:03Ethan.
00:47:04You got the moves.
00:47:05I saw you in action.
00:47:06And girl I was talking to, she starts yelling, I'm not interested in him.
00:47:12Why are you saying that?
00:47:15And everyone piles on laughing.
00:47:16She tried to change the subject then.
00:47:21It was too late.
00:47:23She never apologized.
00:47:26I don't know what to say at school.
00:47:28I'm on antidepressants now.
00:47:29I'm not ashamed to say it.
00:47:31You get picked on enough.
00:47:33What are you supposed to do?
00:47:34I'm very sorry to hear that.
00:47:38So, now you draw the line with teachers because of that experience?
00:47:44Yeah.
00:47:45I don't trust her.
00:47:48They're not all like that.
00:47:51I'm sorry about that.
00:47:53And I think you're making a broader point about when we hit our limit.
00:48:00What's that?
00:48:01All of us reach our limit with a capital L.
00:48:07What we're willing to take, you know, unless you're a saint.
00:48:11As Christians, I know Jesus told us to give everything to our persecutors.
00:48:16If they ask for a shirt, give them something else in return.
00:48:20But soon we realize that if we let them, evil people will take everything from us.
00:48:25Soon, they'll even torture us for their entertainment, as they did to Christ.
00:48:31So, for most of us mortals, we draw our line.
00:48:37That's why I took care of that thing for you earlier, Ethan.
00:48:41Because I reached my limit a long time ago.
00:48:44And somebody's got to stand up to those bullies.
00:48:47I think we should speak up and say what we think.
00:48:50Gabby.
00:48:51I know what Ethan's talking about.
00:48:54I got into it once with my speech and debate teacher.
00:48:57Someone brought up politics, and we were all talking about what was in the news.
00:49:00I said something that set the teacher off.
00:49:02He didn't like what I'd said.
00:49:04And he never forgave me.
00:49:06And ever since, he's made it his mission to try and humiliate me.
00:49:09What happened?
00:49:10He puts me in positions where I'd fail, just to see me fail.
00:49:16He sends me off to debate tournaments.
00:49:18He gives me the wrong advice.
00:49:20Or gives me the wrong evidence.
00:49:22Just for fun.
00:49:24Oh, Gabriela, I want to make you stage manager of our class play, Oklahoma.
00:49:30So I thought, great.
00:49:32Maybe he's finally giving me a chance now.
00:49:35But he would never let me do anything.
00:49:37And any time I made a suggestion, he'd just ignore it.
00:49:41And any time an actor forgot their lines, or missed their marks, or whatever, he would
00:49:46just blow up and blame me.
00:49:48He cursed me out, even.
00:49:50I finally just resigned.
00:49:52It was evil.
00:49:54That's awful.
00:49:56And what kids do is no better.
00:50:00Why are people so cruel?
00:50:04It's in our nature.
00:50:05People are marked, when they come into this world, you could say, because of what happened
00:50:11long ago with the first man and woman.
00:50:14We're selfish and mean until we're trained not to be.
00:50:18Is there anybody out there?
00:50:24Is there anybody out there?
00:50:29I think it'd be a life right.
00:50:36I've been drifting through the darkness.
00:50:39Looking for the sunrise.
00:50:47Sometimes it feels like we're so far away.
00:50:57Trying to keep our heads above the waves.
00:51:03Are we going to sink like Titanic?
00:51:08Our problems feel gigantic.
00:51:12Like falling apart into a cold, cold ocean.
00:51:18Are we going to run like we're strangers?
00:51:22At the first sight of danger.
00:51:26I'll still be hanging around.
00:51:28Just tell me we're not going under.
00:51:32Hey, everyone.
00:51:38Everyone.
00:51:39Hey, yes.
00:51:41I have a Dylan listed on the seating chart.
00:51:44I don't see him.
00:51:45Anyone know what happened to this Dylan?
00:51:48He's checked out.
00:51:50What's that?
00:51:52He takes off during class.
00:51:55Takes off?
00:51:56Yeah, he usually just leaves his stuff here.
00:51:59He comes at the beginning.
00:52:00Leaves when the bell rings.
00:52:01But it shows that he's here.
00:52:04And the teacher lets him do this?
00:52:06She's talked to him about it, but he keeps doing it.
00:52:09He just goes to the parking lot, goes to his car, and plays on his phone.
00:52:13He's there now?
00:52:14Yeah, bro.
00:52:15He's in the parking lot.
00:52:18Okay.
00:52:20For the next five minutes, I want everyone to do what they did before.
00:52:24And I'll write a paragraph about debate.
00:52:27I'll be right back.
00:52:34Hey.
00:52:36Are you Dylan?
00:52:38Yeah.
00:52:39What's up?
00:52:40I'm your seminar teacher today.
00:52:43Oh, yeah.
00:52:44Um, I ain't in that class.
00:52:47Thanks, though.
00:52:48I think you are.
00:52:51Uh, yeah.
00:52:53I don't care what you think.
00:52:54Look.
00:52:56Yeah.
00:52:57Dude, I'm just having a snack.
00:52:59What's it, too?
00:53:00A snack in the middle of class?
00:53:02Yeah, I got, like, big glands, you know?
00:53:04It's real active, too.
00:53:05It's not my fault.
00:53:06Um, hey, man, come on.
00:53:07Do me a favor.
00:53:08Just step out of the car.
00:53:10For what?
00:53:11Am I under a rush?
00:53:14Hey, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:53:16I...
00:53:16Look.
00:53:18Trust me.
00:53:20Hey, unless you want me to go to the principal's office and mark you as absent.
00:53:24Hey, do it.
00:53:25They don't care.
00:53:26They ain't gonna do nothing.
00:53:27You sure?
00:53:30He ain't been ditching his class.
00:53:32What's up with that?
00:53:34Got to put first things first.
00:53:36Take care of business.
00:53:37You ditching my class, that makes it my business.
00:53:42All right, look.
00:53:42As long as I'm on school grounds, I ain't counted as absent.
00:53:46All right?
00:53:46It's truant.
00:53:47So the school gets their money, and I get to keep working on my stuff.
00:53:51Okay.
00:53:52How do you expect to learn anything?
00:53:55Learn what?
00:53:56Fool's math?
00:53:57Fool's history?
00:53:57I'm never gonna use none of that stuff.
00:54:00True.
00:54:01I'm out here getting good nutrition, working on my hooks.
00:54:05Your hooks?
00:54:07Yeah, my hip-hop, dawg.
00:54:11Come on, man.
00:54:11I know you heard of hip-hop.
00:54:12Do I gotta be the teacher now?
00:54:14Yes, yes.
00:54:15I've heard of hip-hop.
00:54:17You know, it actually helps to learn something, you know, to get some ideas, you know, some
00:54:22things to write down for your lyrics.
00:54:25Oh, yeah?
00:54:26Yeah.
00:54:27Knowledge is power.
00:54:32Okay.
00:54:33All right.
00:54:33Appreciate it.
00:54:34I think I got it covered, though.
00:54:35These are sweet, man.
00:54:37You got no idea.
00:54:38Hmm.
00:54:39Really?
00:54:40Try them out on me.
00:54:42Try them.
00:54:46No offense, big dog, but teachers ain't exactly my target audience.
00:54:53Know what I'm saying?
00:54:53Understood.
00:54:55Understood.
00:54:56But, hey, come on.
00:54:57You got an audience.
00:54:58Try them out on me.
00:55:02All right, bro.
00:55:03If you insist.
00:55:05Bitch.
00:55:05Just sit back, relax.
00:55:09Get ready to be dazzled, yeah?
00:55:11All right, here it is.
00:55:13Passport 2, amazing.
00:55:16Yeah, yeah.
00:55:17Feel that sizzle.
00:55:18Headin' straight for the missile.
00:55:19Comin' down the pipe like three little pigs on a spike.
00:55:22To light up your brain.
00:55:23A big candle flapping in the rain.
00:55:25Yeah, yeah.
00:55:25And that's all I got so far.
00:55:28But, I mean, you heard it, though.
00:55:29I mean, I lay it down pretty smooth, right?
00:55:32Keep it up, and you'll put Mother Goose out of business.
00:55:37Okay, all right, then.
00:55:39Yeah.
00:55:40Come to think of it, you may have to pay her some royalties.
00:55:44Is she from Brooklyn?
00:55:47Come on, man.
00:55:49Human me.
00:55:51I'm only here for a few minutes.
00:55:52Plus, you have a backup plan if your career in performing arts takes a little long to get going.
00:56:04It's good for you, I promise.
00:56:07And you can bring your burger with you.
00:56:09Just finish it on the way.
00:56:16Hey, be honest with me.
00:56:18Do you like my act?
00:56:19Like I said, I'm a little out of my element and out of my depth on this particular field,
00:56:26but I see that you're dedicated, and it's half the battle.
00:56:34All right, then.
00:56:35I guess we're on the same page.
00:56:36All right.
00:56:38Let's go.
00:56:39Dylan has decided to end his long hunger strike and join the rest of the class.
00:56:57In fact, he's been working hard on our last topic.
00:57:03Oh, yeah?
00:57:04Yeah.
00:57:06Uh, right, yeah.
00:57:08Last topic, yeah.
00:57:10Which is Patrick Mahomes.
00:57:13Brought to us courtesy of our star athlete.
00:57:17Show the love.
00:57:19You have to start us off.
00:57:20What does it mean when you think of the name Patrick Mahomes?
00:57:26Greatness.
00:57:28Greatness.
00:57:29He's the best.
00:57:31He's got the brains, the athletic ability, the arm, the anticipation.
00:57:37Never been anyone like him.
00:57:39He is great.
00:57:40He's one of a kind with rings to prove it.
00:57:44But what is the downside of being Patrick Mahomes?
00:57:47Downside?
00:57:49There's no downside there.
00:57:51He's got it all.
00:57:52Does he?
00:57:53So what comes with all that glory, all that success?
00:57:57Pressure.
00:57:58Spot on.
00:57:59He can handle it.
00:58:01In the pursuit of excellence, we hold ourselves to a high standard.
00:58:05And others hold us to that standard.
00:58:08Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
00:58:11Jalen does, don't you?
00:58:14Yeah, I guess.
00:58:16Sure you do.
00:58:18Just like Mahomes, except in high school.
00:58:21It's different.
00:58:23Yeah, he's got bank and you don't.
00:58:26It's part of it.
00:58:28I'll put it this way.
00:58:30What if every time a game comes on, it's Jalen's necks?
00:58:35He's going to get us paid like them.
00:58:37Every time you go to your own home, you feel the pressure.
00:58:42That's the pressure out on the field.
00:58:43From defense?
00:58:46That's pressure you can never get away from.
00:58:48No pocket you can hide in.
00:58:50No O-line to block it.
00:58:53It's just always there.
00:58:55Like this weight you can't shake.
00:58:57Have you ever talked about that pressure to your family?
00:59:00What am I supposed to say?
00:59:04Hey, knock it off?
00:59:06Maybe I won't make it.
00:59:08Maybe the chances of me getting paid to play on Sundays aren't a whole lot better than winning the lottery?
00:59:14Maybe they're just trying to encourage you.
00:59:19Let you know they believe in you.
00:59:21No.
00:59:22It's not like that.
00:59:23They push.
00:59:25It's not like they're big fans or something.
00:59:26They want me to succeed so they can get in on the action.
00:59:32It's tough, man.
00:59:35Sorry, man.
00:59:37I thought you liked football.
00:59:39Bro.
00:59:40I love it.
00:59:43Best game in the world.
00:59:45And I don't mind the pressure from the game.
00:59:48It's the expectations that follow me off the field.
00:59:51But you say you want to be like Patrick Mahomes and follow in his footsteps.
00:59:58I mean, yeah.
01:00:01I wish I could play like him.
01:00:04But.
01:00:06In a way.
01:00:07I'm just expected to say that.
01:00:10To step up.
01:00:12And strive to be the next big thing.
01:00:15But if I don't get it done.
01:00:18Hear about it for the rest of my life.
01:00:20For my family.
01:00:22Because they want this slice.
01:00:24Know what I'm saying?
01:00:25Hey, brother.
01:00:26I got the solution for you right here.
01:00:28What's that?
01:00:29You need to diversify.
01:00:30Alright?
01:00:31Get paid in multiple industries.
01:00:32Get out here and help me bust out some lyrics, yeah?
01:00:35Hey, man.
01:00:36Just saying.
01:00:37There's no pressure.
01:00:38I'm already on my way.
01:00:39Just gotta hop on board.
01:00:41Yeah.
01:00:42That'll do it.
01:00:43Maya?
01:00:45I hear what people are saying.
01:00:46And.
01:00:47I'm thinking.
01:00:48We don't talk about the obvious.
01:00:52What is the obvious we're overlooking, Maya?
01:00:56Life.
01:00:57Just rolling out of bed and putting on your clothes.
01:01:01Pushing through the halls out there with everyone pushing back.
01:01:03That's pressure, too.
01:01:07That's very well put.
01:01:09Yeah.
01:01:10Well, we don't talk about the basics like we should.
01:01:14With everyone we walk by, talk to, or sit next to, it all holds risk, you know?
01:01:20The potential to go bad.
01:01:23And you're judged before you even open your mouth and say a word.
01:01:25We all have pressures, don't we?
01:01:29Yes, we do.
01:01:31Why do you say that, Kennedy?
01:01:33It's just different kinds of pressure.
01:01:36Some last for a moment, and some last a lifetime.
01:01:40A lifetime.
01:01:42Yeah.
01:01:43Like they never go away.
01:01:46Like being popular.
01:01:48Help me.
01:01:49How popular?
01:01:51For mind.
01:01:51It's all right.
01:01:53What you're saying is important.
01:01:55That's why they're all laughing?
01:01:56Well, I can laugh at you, too, you know.
01:01:58Goes both ways.
01:02:00No one is going to laugh at you.
01:02:01We value what you have to say.
01:02:04Could have fooled me.
01:02:05Sorry.
01:02:07Okay.
01:02:10Most people aren't popular, Kennedy.
01:02:12But they don't know what it's like.
01:02:14They only see the outside of things.
01:02:16It's like all these actors and singers.
01:02:18Why do so many of them end up on drugs and die young?
01:02:21It's the pressures of living up to a reputation.
01:02:25A lot of truth there.
01:02:27I have feelings.
01:02:28A lot of things don't go my way.
01:02:31Little Miss Perfect, that comes with the territory.
01:02:33Don't call me that.
01:02:35Why are you so mean?
01:02:37You are like poison.
01:02:40Mean?
01:02:40You think I'm mean?
01:02:42Maya, it's all right.
01:02:43No, let me finish.
01:02:44She's not going to win pity me sweepstakes today, okay?
01:02:49No, I don't spill my guts to everyone like y'all.
01:02:52But I got pain.
01:02:54I got pain the day they told me I wasn't the cutest.
01:02:57The smartest.
01:02:58Had nothing gone from myself except for when my cousin said,
01:03:02Hey.
01:03:04You're cute.
01:03:06Come on in here.
01:03:07Take that off.
01:03:14We're going to film you.
01:03:17Come on, girl.
01:03:19Show us what you got.
01:03:24Go ahead.
01:03:25Don't be sure.
01:03:25And then they took advantage of you.
01:03:33And then the whole world knows.
01:03:37And the whole world sees.
01:03:39Just like everyone in here.
01:03:44And you don't mind because your whole life you've been told you're nothing.
01:03:50You've been passed over from prom days or any date.
01:03:54No, Kennedy.
01:03:59I don't feel sorry for you.
01:04:02You got a silver spoon in your mouth and a bling around your neck.
01:04:06And everyone loves you.
01:04:09I'm hard as nails because that's what life gave me.
01:04:14That's how I push through.
01:04:16It's cool.
01:04:28I feel you.
01:04:30There you go.
01:04:32Somebody gets it.
01:04:35I'm so sorry.
01:04:37I wasn't trying to put you down.
01:04:44We know you're not.
01:04:46Don't we, Maya?
01:04:49I said my piece.
01:04:52We're good.
01:04:54Kennedy, go ahead and please finish what you had started to say.
01:04:57All I was trying to say was that I have pressure too.
01:05:06We all do.
01:05:09Some of you may have noticed that I struggle with my weight.
01:05:13A lot of women do, but I have a real problem.
01:05:20I've gone to doctors and the counselors say that I have an eating disorder.
01:05:25I think you look great, Kennedy.
01:05:33I struggle with it.
01:05:35I've gone through times where I've been way too skinny because I wouldn't eat what I was supposed to.
01:05:41I'd get down to like, almost like a skeleton.
01:05:46You don't look that way now.
01:05:49No, I don't.
01:05:50You mean like analexia?
01:05:52You don't have to get into that.
01:05:54I don't mind.
01:05:56Everyone should know that we all have struggles.
01:06:00So, yeah.
01:06:02I'm not afraid to admit it.
01:06:05Those are the things that I have to fight.
01:06:08I mean, crazy.
01:06:09Not eating enough.
01:06:10The solution's right there.
01:06:12Have a pizza, a soda.
01:06:14There, problem solved.
01:06:15That is enough.
01:06:17You're missing the point.
01:06:18How?
01:06:19Something is easy for you.
01:06:20It's not always easy for others.
01:06:22Like what?
01:06:23She's nice and you're, shall we say, in a quiet taste.
01:06:29We're all different.
01:06:31We all bear our scars, our battle scars of life.
01:06:36I'm going to give you another saying.
01:06:38This is an old one the Romans used to say.
01:06:42Misfortune, nobly born, is good fortune.
01:06:48Anyone knows what that means?
01:06:50Something like a fortune cookie.
01:06:52Nice try.
01:06:54You know how athletes always say,
01:06:56there's beauty in the struggle.
01:06:59Yeah.
01:07:00I heard that.
01:07:01That's what it means.
01:07:03All of you have heroes inside of you.
01:07:06How do we get like this?
01:07:08What do you mean, Daniel?
01:07:09I mean,
01:07:11how do things get so crazy?
01:07:13It's like kids don't know the rules nowadays.
01:07:15We're practically raising ourselves.
01:07:17I like the way you said that.
01:07:20Raising ourselves,
01:07:21that's a good one.
01:07:23Why do you feel that way?
01:07:24How else should I feel?
01:07:26We have no parents.
01:07:28I mean,
01:07:29we got some that
01:07:30practically don't do anything
01:07:32but put food on the table.
01:07:34Teachers are always overwhelmed.
01:07:36If some of them care,
01:07:37some of them don't.
01:07:38Everyone's into just doing their own thing now.
01:07:42We do live in an age of self.
01:07:45The other day,
01:07:46I was watching an old TV program
01:07:48just to check it out.
01:07:51It was called The Brady Bunch.
01:07:53It was about a father
01:07:55and a mother and six kids.
01:07:58The jokes were very cringe.
01:08:00The show had heavy use of the laugh track
01:08:03but the lessons,
01:08:07they were always really good.
01:08:09the parents were always there for the kids.
01:08:14You've seen that show, right?
01:08:15I know the show you're talking about.
01:08:18Then how do we end up like this?
01:08:22People stop caring about other people.
01:08:25That's what happens.
01:08:27There's nothing complicated about that.
01:08:30There's a lot of talk today
01:08:31about not trusting institutions,
01:08:34government, businesses,
01:08:37churches, media.
01:08:38What do you say about all that?
01:08:41Why should we trust them
01:08:42when they've failed us?
01:08:45I mean,
01:08:45the whole system is stacked.
01:08:47Everyone older got the houses,
01:08:50the big paying jobs
01:08:51and left us with nothing
01:08:53but debt and broken lives.
01:08:57Amen, sister.
01:08:59Maybe it's your time to be great,
01:09:01to be noble.
01:09:02Maybe you live better
01:09:05than the generation before you,
01:09:07the generation that stole from you.
01:09:10Maybe you set the example
01:09:13of goodness and grace.
01:09:16Live to be the generation
01:09:18that rebuilds what your parents
01:09:20and your grandparents destroy.
01:09:23That sounds pretty noble to me.
01:09:24And then she just had no idea.
01:09:35Hello, Karen Willis.
01:09:37Mrs. Willis,
01:09:38this is Georgia Vines,
01:09:39Casey Switzer's mom.
01:09:41Oh, hi.
01:09:42How are you?
01:09:44I'm okay.
01:09:45I'm calling about Casey.
01:09:46She told me she's not doing well
01:09:48in your class.
01:09:49She has been struggling.
01:09:50Well,
01:09:53I talked to her like you suggested.
01:09:56And?
01:09:57You're not seeing any improvement?
01:09:59Not in her schoolwork.
01:10:01No, I'm not.
01:10:03Of course I meant improvement in her grades.
01:10:05What other improvement could I mean?
01:10:07I don't know.
01:10:08How about improvement in social skills?
01:10:11You don't need to get smart with me.
01:10:15Look,
01:10:16she doesn't put in the time
01:10:17or effort she needs to succeed.
01:10:19She just doesn't care.
01:10:21Okay?
01:10:21This is not a hard class.
01:10:22It's sophomore social studies.
01:10:24If it makes you feel any better,
01:10:27a lot of the other students do the same.
01:10:30At least she shows up for class.
01:10:32That's going to look great
01:10:33on her resume, won't it?
01:10:35She showed up for class.
01:10:38I'm just saying
01:10:39it could be worse.
01:10:41What else can I do?
01:10:44Mrs. Vines,
01:10:44I can't cancel you
01:10:45on how to raise your child.
01:10:46I only see what shows up to class.
01:10:49Thanks for nothing.
01:10:52I'm hanging up now.
01:10:54Do you see?
01:10:55Do you see?
01:10:56This is why I don't try
01:10:57and get close to them.
01:10:59That's why.
01:11:00They're like abused animals
01:11:01let out of their
01:11:03cage for seven hours a day
01:11:05in a pen,
01:11:05and we just warehouse them.
01:11:09Now that's a pretty
01:11:11rough view of things.
01:11:13Is it?
01:11:14I mean,
01:11:14it's all I can do
01:11:15to corral these savages
01:11:17and get them to sit still
01:11:18for a few minutes
01:11:19and some of them
01:11:20can't even do that.
01:11:22Have you ever tried
01:11:22just talking to them?
01:11:24I'm not a miracle worker.
01:11:29And this is not
01:11:30a miracle factory.
01:11:33I have one more topic for us.
01:11:36Smile.
01:11:37It's a personal privilege.
01:11:40It's going to help us
01:11:41wrap up today.
01:11:44We've seen and heard
01:11:45a lot from the heart
01:11:47and the soul today.
01:11:49Courage.
01:11:53Honesty.
01:11:54Wisdom.
01:11:56So our final topic today
01:11:59The solution.
01:12:16Who can help me
01:12:17find a solution?
01:12:18You mean
01:12:19for a life?
01:12:21Yes, Daniel.
01:12:22Exactly.
01:12:23What is the solution
01:12:24for life?
01:12:25To find more joy,
01:12:28peace,
01:12:29excellence.
01:12:30So are you talking
01:12:31like a code of life
01:12:32or something?
01:12:35Maybe.
01:12:36What do you think?
01:12:38I try to find my way
01:12:40and lose myself
01:12:41in working out,
01:12:44practicing,
01:12:45watching tape,
01:12:46trying to be the best
01:12:47I can be?
01:12:49Preparing,
01:12:50studying.
01:12:51Yeah.
01:12:52All that.
01:12:54How about you, Maya?
01:12:55What do you do
01:12:56to find peace,
01:12:57joy,
01:12:58to be your best?
01:13:00I like listening
01:13:01to those podcasts
01:13:02and the YouTube channels,
01:13:05the ones with the
01:13:06rain falling.
01:13:07It may sound stupid,
01:13:09but it works
01:13:10for me anyways.
01:13:11I think that's awesome.
01:13:15It works for a lot of people
01:13:16and I don't think
01:13:17they'd have those shows
01:13:18if it didn't work.
01:13:20I guess not.
01:13:22Daniel,
01:13:23how about you?
01:13:26I'm good with a book
01:13:27and a latte.
01:13:28You travel light, huh?
01:13:30It's called an escape.
01:13:32Could easily dive
01:13:33into a good book.
01:13:34I do a lot of that myself.
01:13:37Very good.
01:13:40Who else?
01:13:41Mike,
01:13:42what do you do
01:13:43for peace,
01:13:44joy?
01:13:44I heard Jack Daniel's name.
01:13:46He and I go way back.
01:13:48Is there something
01:13:49legal you can turn to?
01:13:50And I guess gaming,
01:13:54hanging out with friends.
01:13:56I don't know about
01:13:56joy and peace
01:13:59and all that,
01:14:01but it's what
01:14:02I like to do for fun.
01:14:04You brought up
01:14:05a great point.
01:14:07What we do for fun
01:14:08isn't always the same
01:14:09as what we do
01:14:09to find joy,
01:14:11peace,
01:14:12excellence.
01:14:13I was going to say
01:14:14that I turn to herbal tea.
01:14:15Great example.
01:14:17But is that truly
01:14:19the solution?
01:14:22Granted,
01:14:23we've all
01:14:24gotten ourselves there.
01:14:26We choose something
01:14:27to eat or drink
01:14:28or something to pass
01:14:29the time by.
01:14:31But is that
01:14:33the inspiration
01:14:34for lasting peace,
01:14:38lasting joy?
01:14:40You see there's
01:14:42a difference, right?
01:14:43Yeah, I do.
01:14:45So what do you say, sir?
01:14:46Maybe my answer
01:14:52will surprise you.
01:14:54For me,
01:14:55it's clear as day.
01:14:59How do we find
01:15:00the solution,
01:15:02the one source
01:15:03to all these things?
01:15:06Joy,
01:15:08peace,
01:15:10the pursuit
01:15:10of excellence.
01:15:11I found that source
01:15:16a long time ago
01:15:18and it's steered me
01:15:20straight ever since.
01:15:22Sports trivia.
01:15:23Oh,
01:15:26funny thing,
01:15:27you probably thought
01:15:29you were just
01:15:29recruiting some guy
01:15:30from a sports card store.
01:15:33Nah, man.
01:15:33I'm just kidding.
01:15:34We chose three
01:15:36random topics
01:15:37that you've written,
01:15:41literally picked out
01:15:42by one of you
01:15:43out of the hat.
01:15:46And those topics
01:15:47led us here,
01:15:49the source
01:15:51of what's most important.
01:15:53How'd you know
01:15:54that would happen?
01:15:55I didn't.
01:15:57But look what
01:15:58happened here today.
01:15:59Your concerns,
01:16:01your thoughts,
01:16:03your experiences
01:16:04have led you
01:16:06to search
01:16:07for something
01:16:08bigger than yourselves.
01:16:10Because we've all
01:16:11been told
01:16:12to go find joy
01:16:14and the good things
01:16:15in life
01:16:16in a selfish way.
01:16:19But we learn
01:16:20how that fits
01:16:21into a bigger picture.
01:16:22God's holy picture.
01:16:26Beautiful.
01:16:28Bright.
01:16:31Just like your smiles.
01:16:35Don't let anyone
01:16:36take that away from you.
01:16:41You know,
01:16:42I forgot to do something.

01:17:05The one time
01:17:06I forget.
01:17:09You know,
01:17:09the one time
01:17:10that I forget.

01:17:16Okay.
01:17:16I gotta show
01:17:17this guy the door.

01:17:22That's it.
01:17:34We're done.
01:17:35What's up?
01:17:36We had a good class today.

01:17:38you didn't.
01:17:39Mr. Jones here
01:17:40didn't come clean
01:17:40about his background.
01:17:41He managed to slip
01:17:42through the cracks.
01:17:43Isn't that right,
01:17:44Mr. Jones?
01:17:45Look what I found
01:17:46on the internet.
01:17:48Harrison Jones yesterday
01:17:49was barred for life
01:17:51from teaching
01:17:51and stripped
01:17:52of his teacher's license
01:17:53for leading his classroom
01:17:54in prayer
01:17:54at Sequoia High School
01:17:55in Rockdale.
01:17:57School administrators
01:17:57terminated Jones
01:17:59following a hearing
01:18:00into allegations
01:18:01of unapproved
01:18:02religious conduct
01:18:03in the classroom.
01:18:04Jones' teaching license
01:18:06was revoked
01:18:06specifically
01:18:08for violating
01:18:09the Supreme Court's
01:18:10ban on prayer
01:18:11in school.
01:18:12Jones claimed
01:18:13the prayers
01:18:13were for a student
01:18:14who had been injured
01:18:15in an auto accident.
01:18:17He also claimed
01:18:18the ban on prayer
01:18:18was, quote,
01:18:20tyrannical
01:18:20and unjust
01:18:21and et cetera,
01:18:22et cetera,
01:18:23garbage.
01:18:24We're done.

01:18:38who got barred
01:18:39from teaching
01:18:40for the rest of his life.
01:18:41That's why he's working
01:18:42in a sports card shop.
01:18:44Isn't that right,
01:18:44Mr. Jones?
01:18:51Yes, I need security
01:18:52down here, please.
01:18:53I need someone
01:18:54escorted from the school grounds.

01:19:13It's okay.
01:19:14It's okay.
01:19:26They do make you pay
01:19:27for thoughts out of season.
01:19:29Don't they?
01:19:31Growing up,
01:19:35I never thought
01:19:38I'd have to choose
01:19:38between
01:19:39my God
01:19:41and my government.
01:19:45For me,
01:19:45that's an easy choice.
01:19:48Principal,
01:19:49call this to Conan.
01:19:50You called for security?
01:19:51Yes.
01:19:52This gentleman

01:20:38Where's my disinfectant?
01:21:00I do miss it so.
01:21:03Did you see the cornerstone
01:21:05out front?
01:21:06It has the year on it.
01:21:08A.D.
01:21:081977.
01:21:10You know what that means?
01:21:13Anno Domini.
01:21:14It's Latin for
01:21:15the year of our Lord.
01:21:19They haven't chiseled
01:21:20that out yet,
