00:30Actually, someone's got your hat fuzz.
00:32Get out of it, you. Come on. Bean doesn't do that.
00:38We're back. Oh, I'm loving this.
00:41Scouring Britain's sheds for classic cars.
00:44A thing of beauty.
00:45Proper special.
00:46Quintessential Brits.
00:48That's nice.
00:49A Lee Francis.
00:50American icons.
00:51Look at the amount of chrome on the front there.
00:54And continental curios.
00:56That is a Lancia Aprilia.
00:59We're going to buy them.
01:00Thank you so much.
01:02Sort them.
01:03It's the sunroof.
01:05No, please, I'm getting out now.
01:06Drive them.
01:08And sell them for a tidy profit.
01:11Are we really the money?
01:12This is Sheddenberry's classic cars.
01:20We're on our way to Bristol.
01:23And we're going open mic.
01:24What do you call a bloke with leaves on his head?
01:28Russell.
01:29And that's who we're going to go and see.
01:31Oh, right.
01:32Okay, got you.
01:33All right.
01:33It's all right.
01:34Yeah.
01:35Now, what's Russell's poison?
01:37I'm not quite sure what his poison is.
01:39On the phone, he didn't seem to have been poisoned.
01:42Yeah.
01:42Yeah.
01:43I think he's got an eclectic mix.
01:44I think that's what we normally call it.
01:46Yeah.
01:47Bit of old and new.
01:48Four wheels and two.
01:50He's got four wheels.
01:51Yeah.
01:51I think he might have the odd two wheel.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Yeah, cool.
01:55And he probably might have something in between, like a three wheel.
01:58You never know.
01:59That's true.
02:00Yeah, they do exist.
02:01It doesn't really matter whether it's British, American, Italian, Scandinavian.
02:06Yeah.
02:06Whatever.
02:07Yeah.
02:08As long as it's got some character about it, that's what matters, isn't it?
02:12Yeah.
02:13Well, you get that kind of moment of excitement.
02:16That's what really rose our boat, is what's in here that we've never seen before.
02:20Yeah.
02:21And if it's affordable, let's buy it.
02:23Exactly.
02:24Whether we leave Russell's with a Nissan Leaf for a Model T Ford with Leaf Springs, who knows?
02:30But, Russell, here we come.
02:37Tell me, mate, right, there's a miner there.
02:40There's something over there.
02:41Yeah.
02:41Tell me, I mean, what's your poison?
02:44British cars?
02:45Yeah.
02:45Any cars?
02:45I mean, tell me.
02:46British cars.
02:46British cars.
02:47So, Russell, tell me about you, mate.
02:48So, restoring stuff?
02:50I'm a welder.
02:51And then you collect the odd motor at the same time?
02:53Yeah, yeah.
02:53We'll have a mosey about.
02:54Yeah, yeah.
02:55A little rumage in there.
02:56Is everything for sale?
02:57Everything's for sale.
02:58Yeah.
02:58Everything's for sale.
02:59Even you.
03:00Yeah.
03:00I've seen the size of your wallet.
03:01Yeah.
03:02Yeah.
03:02So, you know, there won't be much.
03:04So, it's tiny.
03:04Yeah, exactly.
03:05I'll be buying the odd spanner.
03:07Yeah.
03:08Yeah, great.
03:08Hey, Ross, fantastic, mate.
03:09Well, we'll have a quick go out here.
03:11Yeah.
03:11And then we'll be in there.
03:13Yeah.
03:13Thanks, mate.
03:14Have a good day.
03:14We'll start outside.
03:15Yeah, let's go over here.
03:16Come on.
03:16Mate, we'll see you in a bit.
03:17Cheers, Russell.
03:17All right.
03:17Cheers.
03:17All right.
03:17Cheers.
03:17All right.
03:22Next to the ubiquitous Morris Minor, he's got a rather rare British saloon.
03:28That, I think,
03:30is a Standard 12 or 14.
03:34What?
03:34What, Austin?
03:35No, Standard.
03:37Standard was a Midlands-based manufacturer who built cars and tractors before the brand name
03:43disappeared when they merged with Triumph.
03:45The Standard 14 was a popular car of the early 50s, though this one has seen better days.
03:51You would lose your shirt on that, wouldn't you?
03:54You would.
03:54You'd have to restore it out of love, not money.
03:57Do you know where it's probably more likely to be destined for?
04:00Where?
04:01Banger Racers.
04:02Oh, no, really?
04:02Shame, isn't it?
04:03How do you fancy going inside?
04:07Well, you'd better throw the dog's ball.
04:09Go on.
04:09All right.
04:09You go and get it.
04:10Where is it?
04:11Down, Shep.
04:11Come on.
04:12You've got to be of a certain age to remember that.
04:14Inside, Russell is going for the TARDIS of the Year award with a collision of commercial curios.
04:24That is a van body on something else, maybe.
04:28American Iron.
04:29The interior is a little bit care-worn. Would you like to take a look, sir?
04:36Stationary engines.
04:38We got ourselves a little Lister D stationary engine.
04:41Yeah, that's lovely. On a trolley, so that's great.
04:43Even better.
04:44It's ready to sit in front of.
04:46Look at that.
04:47In those country shows, mate.
04:49Assorted bric-a-brac.
04:50Hold on.
04:51Cunard line.
04:52I tell you what, mate.
04:53Yeah.
04:53That would be an open and shut case.
04:58And another classic Brit.
05:03Now, that looks really rather nice.
05:05Yeah.
05:06Doesn't it?
05:06Now, come on, then.
05:07Tell me, Austin what?
05:08It's a tin hen.
05:11Released in 1932,
05:13the Austin 10 is a classic mid-range saloon aimed squarely at the middle-class market.
05:19So this was like, I suppose, probably your sort of bankish manager, or at least well-to-do merchant would be going around in one of these.
05:27I was going to say, architect?
05:30Yeah, possibly.
05:31Grocer?
05:32Grocer, yeah.
05:33Yeah?
05:33Yeah, sort of, Grocer, maybe with two shops.
05:36The interior looks pretty OK.
05:37Well, actually, the seat cushions have been re-upholstered by lots of things.
05:41Well, it's because there's been an awful lot of Grocer's bottoms on there.
05:43Well, that's right.
05:44Oh, my, what's that?
05:46Now, that is extraordinary.
05:48Now, what is this, then, Fuzzer?
05:50It's not...
05:51It's one of those, yeah.
05:52It's a standard 14.
05:54Hang on a sec.
05:56But wait a minute.
05:57But it's done as America...
05:59Russell, look.
06:01What?
06:02Just talk to me.
06:03What's this about?
06:04Standard 14 made to look military.
06:07So it wasn't originally, it wasn't military?
06:09No, but the one outside you were looking at was former RAF.
06:13OK.
06:14And better condition, so sort of took that theme across.
06:17I see.
06:18Oh, right, OK, I get it.
06:20I actually think it looks pretty cool.
06:22It does look cool.
06:23Do you know what I mean?
06:23It looks like a kind of staff car.
06:25Do you know what I mean?
06:26Yeah.
06:27And it's got, well, you know, it's aged,
06:30but it has got a complete interior by the looks of things.
06:33Yep.
06:34OK, does it run at all?
06:35It does start.
06:36It's not the best.
06:37It needs, you know, your expertise.
06:40Don't look at me, mate.
06:41It needs his expertise.
06:42Oh, let's just have a little look under it.
06:44Oh, look at that.
06:44Have a quick look under there.
06:45What's under there?
06:46This is a flathead.
06:47Oh, is it?
06:48This is a side valve engine.
06:50So it's going nice and slowly then?
06:52Yeah, very slowly, but it'll get there.
06:55When it is going, it ain't slow.
06:57Oh, OK.
06:58It isn't slow.
06:59So once you wind it up, it'll bond on.
07:01Oh, yeah, it'll do 70 miles an hour quite comfortably.
07:03No, will it?
07:04Yeah, yeah.
07:04It does look lovely, though.
07:06I like it.
07:06It's got a certain chance for it.
07:08It's funky, isn't it?
07:08I mean, where are you going to find another one?
07:11Outside.
07:12Yeah.
07:12That's a good point.
07:13Well delivered, yeah.
07:15Now, look, there's something behind here that I want to have a look at.
07:17Go on then.
07:18Right.
07:18Now, what the heck is that?
07:21That is a 1954 Nash Roller Tractor.
07:25That's a tipper.
07:27Is it a powered tipper?
07:28No, it's a manual tipper.
07:29Oh, OK, yeah.
07:30A motorcycle seat, BSA stationary engine, and a three speeds forward and reverse.
07:36It's actually got a roller on it as well.
07:37It's for rolling the garden.
07:38Oh, look at that.
07:39I've driven it up the road.
07:41Oh, yeah?
07:41Yeah, yeah.
07:41Have you?
07:42Yeah, it does 25 miles an hour.
07:4325 miles per hour?
07:44Yeah, it really rattles along.
07:46I'll tell you what, it's becoming more and more attractive by the minute.
07:49But stopping it again is a...
07:49Yeah, I'll bet you that is an issue.
07:51Yeah.
07:52That's good.
07:52Oh, hang on.
07:52What's that?
07:55That's a little Chinese trials bike.
07:58Oh, cool.
07:59Sweet little thing.
08:00Yeah, one, two, five, semi-automatic.
08:02That's great.
08:03That's super cool.
08:04That could be really good fun, that thing.
08:06Yeah.
08:06Well, look, this is a good fun corner here.
08:09All right, shall we go and have a look over there, then?
08:12Russell's second unit has got a lovely Triumph saloon and...
08:16Uh-oh.
08:18Oh.
08:20No, no, no, look.
08:22It's a Dennis.
08:23You like these, don't you?
08:24It's a Dennis one.
08:25Look at that.
08:25Look, it's got the starting handle and everything.
08:27Come back.
08:29Now, that is lovely.
08:31I've got a hankering for it.
08:32I've got a hankering for a Dennis.
08:34Do you know what?
08:34I have to say, that is exactly the same as the one that I got nailed.
08:40Is it really?
08:40I paid 300 quid.
08:42Yeah.
08:43For a Dennis mower like that.
08:45And I sold it for 70.
08:48Did you?
08:48Yeah.
08:49Okay, so look, right.
08:50We've got that...
08:52Standard 14.
08:54Oh, yeah.
08:54The one outside of the military spec one.
08:56Yeah.
08:57We've got the one next door to it, which is an Austin 14.
08:59The Austin 10.
09:0010.
09:00Yeah.
09:01I really like that.
09:02I know you do.
09:03But, you know, I just do like Austin's.
09:05There's that motorbike.
09:06Oh, yes, of course.
09:07Yeah.
09:07Okay.
09:08And there's also the tipper.
09:09The little tipper.
09:11Now, that.
09:12That is nice.
09:12That's a lot in quite a compact area.
09:15Let's go and see, Russ.
09:16Come on.
09:16Let's go do the deal.
09:17All right, mate.
09:18Mind the step.
09:19Yeah, all right.
09:24I don't know where to start, Russ.
09:25Where should we start?
09:26Loads of stuff.
09:27In a very small space as well.
09:30That's great.
09:30Compact.
09:31Yeah, compact.
09:32But lovely.
09:33Yeah.
09:33Okay, mate.
09:34So, go on then.
09:35What?
09:35Right, I'm going to start off by asking about the Austin 10 there.
09:39Oh, okay.
09:40So, is it for sale?
09:41Yes.
09:42Yeah.
09:43How much are you looking for for that?
09:44Five and a half.
09:45Five and a half.
09:46Okay.
09:46All right, well, I'll chip in then.
09:48Okay.
09:49Yeah.
09:50My very rare tractor.
09:51How much is that?
09:52Grand.
09:54Yeah.
09:55Okay.
09:55Next to it is a...
09:58The trials bike, yeah.
09:59The trials bike.
10:00How much is that?
10:00$6.50.
10:01Okey-cokey.
10:02Okay.
10:02Now, standing in front of us is this standard 14.
10:093-2.
10:103-2.
10:11Does this run and ride?
10:13It starts, it wants tinkering with.
10:15Does it stop?
10:16I drove it in here.
10:18Oh, right, okay.
10:18From where?
10:19Just outside?
10:20From over there, yeah.
10:21Did you use the brakes to stop it?
10:23Yes, I did, yeah.
10:23Okay.
10:24And they did stop?
10:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:26Okay.
10:26Okay, that's good.
10:27All right, good.
10:27Now, I'm just wondering what to perhaps pair and wheel and deal with.
10:31Do you know what I mean?
10:33What do you think?
10:33I think it's got to be.
10:35What?
10:36The little tractor truck, tipper truck.
10:39Yeah, not for a grand, no.
10:40Nothing else you want to chuck in with it?
10:44Okay, let me have a think.
10:453-2.
10:47So that would be 4-2.
10:49And with the motorbike, 4-8.
10:544-2, the lot?
10:554-4.
11:00Um, 4-3.
11:11Now that is extraordinary.
11:14We're down in Bristol with Russell and his jam-packed shed full of curiosities.
11:18We've offered 4,200 for a standard car, a tipper, and a scrambler bike, but he wants more.
11:28Mmm, 4-4.
11:31Um, 4-3.
11:354-2.
11:37No.
11:384-4.
11:41Bargain.
11:42Well done.
11:44Go on, Ed, Russ.
11:45Okay.
11:46Cheers.
11:464,400 of your finest British pounds will be winking your way.
11:51Great.
11:51Hey?
11:52Mate, what a great day.
11:55Next day, back at the shed, we reveal all.
12:00We have ourselves, man, okay, it's a standard, right, motor.
12:06But apart from that, it's been turned into a military-staff car, kind of American tip, doesn't it?
12:13Yeah, with knobbly rear tyres.
12:15Yeah, well, we thought we might off-road it.
12:17Yeah, I think it looks great, and apparently, it's got a good turn of speed.
12:21It'll do 65, 70 miles per hour.
12:23Will it really?
12:24It's proper fast, isn't it?
12:25Yeah, it is in something that old.
12:27You can't, you'll have to concentrate on the steering.
12:29Yeah, very much so.
12:30Look, right, I think we should just accessorise that.
12:32I'm not quite sure quite how, but I've got a feeling there could be a couple of American stars on the doors.
12:38Do you know what I mean?
12:38Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
12:40It does apparently have a running problem as well.
12:42Might be a little bit of a carburetor clean coming up, and potentially, it might have a little bit of a weep in the cylinder head.
12:50That's an easy job, isn't it?
12:51Can we just clear this up?
12:53A slight running here.
12:54Does it run?
12:55Yes.
12:55Oh, okay.
12:56Don't know.
12:57Yes, it runs.
12:58Never tried it.
12:59It runs, but...
13:00Bubbles.
13:01It might do.
13:02I think it's rather a lovely thing that we're going to get going, we're going to accessorise, and then we could.
13:08We've invaded Oxfordshire a few times.
13:11Perhaps we should go to Wiltshire this time and surprise them.
13:14Yeah.
13:14A sunrise attack.
13:15Yeah.
13:16Yeah, deliver a general to Wiltshire.
13:18Tidworth.
13:19Oh, we could deliver a general?
13:20Yeah.
13:20Staff car?
13:21As for the scrambler and the roller tipper.
13:26If we have time, we'll give them a bit of a fettle, but the main job is a standard 14, with its US military paint job.
13:35There we go.
13:38Four cylinders of standard fineness there.
13:42Shall I get in and have a look?
13:43I mean, Bean's in there, but I'm sure she'll move up a little bit.
13:46What are you going to do?
13:46Just crank it and see what happens.
13:48Just see what happens.
13:48You have to pull first.
13:49Okay, I'm going to get in this side.
13:50Watch out, Bean.
13:51It's running, but it's not happy.
14:02So our nice little runner is not quite sprinting.
14:07Number four cylinder isn't firing.
14:09Number three, the lead's disconnected from the cap.
14:12So that's an easy fix.
14:14Right, okay.
14:14So three's an easy fix, four less so.
14:17Do you think we should take it for a spin and see if four chimes in?
14:20I think we should change the spark plug on number four first.
14:22Yeah, I agree with you, Al.
14:25Overruled.
14:26Typical.
14:28Fuzz removes the spark plug, and it looks like we were right to wait.
14:32There we are.
14:33It's all wet.
14:34Okay.
14:36Our first remedy is to burn off the old fuel and crud.
14:42But when Fuzz tries again...
14:45What's happening?
14:47The end cylinder, when I take the cap off quite a way, it fires on that cylinder.
14:53Right, okay.
14:53I think we should change that plug.
14:55That's better.
14:55That's exactly the right one.
14:57Well, I hope it's all right, because I bought that at a jumble.
15:01Ready?
15:01Ready.
15:02Third time lucky.
15:04That's it.
15:05That's it.
15:07Much better, isn't it?
15:08Sounds good.
15:09No?
15:10That's much better.
15:11It's not bouncing around like it was.
15:12That sounds fantastic.
15:14Yeah, I think we might have a little bit of a carburetor problem.
15:17Yeah, maybe.
15:18There's an airscrew here we can maybe...
15:19Can I just make a suggestion?
15:20Yes.
15:21Why don't we just pile in and take it down and drive them back?
15:23Good idea.
15:23See if it works.
15:24Go on.
15:24So is it not worth fiddling with the airscrew before we go?
15:27Oh, quickly.
15:28Very quickly.
15:29I can get a screwdriver.
15:30All right, mate.
15:33Overruled again, Alan's 30-second adjustment turns into 30 minutes
15:39as he discovers a new problem, a worn gasket.
15:42It's leaking here, Fuzz.
15:43When you turn it off, it squirted fuel out of this joint here.
15:45Oh, right, okay.
15:47The solution is for Fuzz to make a new one.
15:50I'm using the hammer in the ring end of this spanner just to cut.
15:57The hole in this homemade gasket.
16:02After Alan has filed down the flange,
16:05connecting the carb to the air intake to make sure that it's flat,
16:09they've re-plumbed the carb and try again.
16:12Okay, ignition on.
16:14Client.
16:15Pulling the starter now.
16:19Bit of choke.
16:20It runs, but it sounds even worse.
16:29We could do with setting the idle.
16:33It bogs down a little bit, doesn't it?
16:38Hold on, Al.
16:39I've got an idea.
16:40I've got an idea as well.
16:42What's that?
16:43Why don't we just take it for a drive?
16:44Let's take it for a drive.
16:44Just see what happens.
16:46Yeah?
16:46It may suddenly free up a bit.
16:49Unusually.
16:50We've got a lovely tick over.
16:51That's a beautiful tick over.
16:53See if it drives lovely too.
16:54Let's go have a drive.
16:54Are you going to drive?
16:55I don't mind.
16:56Well, I'm closest.
16:57I can drive.
16:58I'll go in the back.
16:59All right.
17:00Come on then, Beanie.
17:00Oh, hang on.
17:01There's a cylinder head on my seat.
17:02Oh, dear.
17:04So, finally, we're in the car.
17:06But getting it going doesn't quite kill the problem.
17:10Something's trying to chime in.
17:13I still think we should take all the spark plugs out first.
17:16Yeah, I think we should take all the spark plugs out.
17:18Okay, and you said.
17:19Also, look at the points.
17:25Do you know what?
17:26I know there's some fettling to be done quite substantially.
17:29Yeah.
17:29Oh, so you pulled your knob off.
17:35I'm just trying to get it in reverse there.
17:37Reverse, madam.
17:38Yeah.
17:39That's it.
17:40That's it.
17:41That's it.
17:41There you go.
17:42If you pull on the crook rather than the knob, it'll avoid that.
17:52Once this is sorted, I'm planning a military-themed outing.
17:55But we've got our work cut out.
17:57There's a lot to do, isn't there, to make it run beautiful.
18:02Yes.
18:02But for the first little test run, I think that's the right result.
18:05Back at the shed, Alan and Skid move on to the Scrambler.
18:15I'm quite looking forward to this, Al.
18:18Yeah, me too.
18:19It looks virtually new, doesn't it?
18:20Just dusty.
18:21Yeah.
18:21I mean, it is a Far Eastern kind of knock-off cheap motorbike.
18:25But I'll tell you what, when it runs, it's probably great fun.
18:29So, should we just do the usual?
18:31Just see if it runs.
18:32I mean, it's fairly new.
18:33I think it's going to be pilot jet blocked.
18:35It's always the pilot jet.
18:37Yeah, well, especially with modern fuel.
18:38It's got a good ignition system on there, so you'll always have a good spark.
18:41Let's see if it's got some fuel in it.
18:43Yeah.
18:43See if it starts.
18:44Yeah, and then see what happens from there.
18:47Alan checks the fuel and then gives it a first kick.
18:52It's got good compression.
18:56Yeah, it's working.
18:58The engine sounds good.
19:00Yeah, it's not rightly, is it?
19:02No smoke.
19:04These things don't get used, aren't you?
19:11That's trying, isn't it?
19:15Yeah.
19:16Let's just lay it off.
19:17Warm it up.
19:17Warm it up.
19:22No, it's definitely got some block jets.
19:25So, like the standard, the Scrambler has carb trouble,
19:28while Skid does some cleaning.
19:31Alan dismounts the carb and gives it some tough love.
19:36That's nice and clean in there.
19:37That's a good sign.
19:38So, there's the pilot jet, there's the main jet,
19:40and that's the idle adjusting screw.
19:42So, we'll take the jets out and see if they're clear.
19:46Yeah, the pilot jet's completely blocked.
19:48Can't see any light through it at all.
19:50So, I've got a wire brush bristle.
19:51Hopefully, I can make that go through the jet.
19:55It's very reluctant to go in.
19:57The problem these days is the fuel.
19:59It's the ethanol in the fuel that attacks the jets
20:01and causes the fuel to block up and make a big mess.
20:04You can just see it in the float jet.
20:05It's started to happen here.
20:07It's got that green tinge on here.
20:08It's just started to take effect.
20:12But because this hole is so small,
20:13it blocks up very quickly and it stops the engine from running.
20:16So, I managed to find a really small wire brush
20:17with very fine bristles.
20:19And that now goes through and goes through nicely.
20:24Alan refits the carb and goes again.
20:28Carb's done.
20:28Carb's cleaned out.
20:29Tank drained, fresh fuel.
20:31Let's give it a go.
20:33Choke on.
20:43Let it warm up a little bit.
20:44Huh?
20:45Let it warm up a bit.
20:45Yeah, yeah.
20:46That's much better, isn't it?
20:48Finally, he gives the gears a quick check.
20:51That's perfect.
20:53That runs really well.
20:54It's good.
20:55I think we've got to take it out.
20:56I'm going to get a crush on it.
20:57All right, then.
20:58And away he goes.
21:06It might be a cheap-as-chips Chinese import
21:09that will soon be thrashed and crashed
21:11by someone with more spots than sense.
21:14But if it allows Alan to rediscover his inner teenager,
21:18I'm all for it.
21:21So, a great end to the day.
21:23But the Scrambler's just one of our three purchases.
21:28Tomorrow, we've got to take on the tipper.
21:30But the big task is to get the standard ready
21:33for its military-themed day.
21:36Will it cut the mustard,
21:37or will it sink into the Oxfordshire mud?
21:43The knob's come off.
21:45Where's the knob?
21:46We had an interesting day yesterday with our standard.
21:59We got it running, but it's not very happy.
22:02Today, we're going to have another try.
22:05But first, our other purchase,
22:07the three-wheel dumper truck with a BSA engine.
22:11I'll tell you what we should try and do.
22:12Here, so if we get it going,
22:14I bet you we can get three of us on it.
22:15Oh, easily, yeah.
22:16Oh, easily.
22:17Don't you think?
22:18Perhaps even the odd dog.
22:19Yeah, we'll go on.
22:20We just take it down the road and back.
22:22Yeah.
22:22I think we should put some fuel in it
22:23and just see if it goes.
22:24OK, let's do that.
22:25I'll put a little tottie down.
22:26We're not bothering with the spark plug scenario
22:28or anything like that.
22:28We're just going to see if we get lucky.
22:30Go and see, B.
22:31It's got this feeling it's just going to work.
22:32Fighting torque.
22:33Hi-ya.
22:33So let's see.
22:36Four-stroke it is, isn't it?
22:37Yes, it's a four-stroke.
22:39OK, choke on.
22:40Bit of throttle.
22:41Bit of throttle.
22:42Bit of crankage.
22:43Come on, then, cranker.
22:50That's dead as a doornail.
22:52First attempt.
22:53Not so good.
22:54So Alan checks for a spark.
22:57Massive spark, isn't it?
22:58Right, before you put that back in,
23:00let's go cheap.
23:01All right, yeah, get some start-me-up.
23:03Round two.
23:10Oh, that was a fire.
23:13Yeah, yeah.
23:14There's something, isn't there?
23:15There's definitely something.
23:16It does fire.
23:22What we need to do is go down to the workshop
23:24and just file this square.
23:26See, that's at an angle.
23:27Oh, right, OK.
23:28It should be dead square like that.
23:29All right, do you want to try it with the...
23:31Which way is it turning?
23:32If you try it with the rope, I'm going to follow that.
23:34Our tipper roller BSA oddity has a dual start.
23:39First attempt.
23:41If that kicks back, it's going to suck him down like a big sucker.
23:46Close.
23:47Was it?
23:48Second time with feeling and a slug of easy start.
23:51Ready?
23:52Yeah.
24:00Like all those BSA motorbikes,
24:02it needs a bit of patience.
24:04But in the end, it gets there.
24:07Try it.
24:09Yeah, pop off.
24:10Here we go.
24:11No, no.
24:13Ready?
24:13Yeah.
24:14Whoa, whoa.
24:16Jeez, God blimey!
24:17I have no idea how any of these controls work.
24:26Honest.
24:27Man, we didn't get that far.
24:29Mainly because I put it into third
24:31and I didn't have enough revs, I don't think.
24:33I think we need to adjust the air screw.
24:35Do you think?
24:35I think it's just, I think it is pilot error.
24:41I feel like it's moving forwards.
24:46It's going remarkably well.
24:48Getting it going again.
24:50God!
24:51Did you see that fire?
24:53It's not so easy.
24:54But eventually, we're away.
24:56We're in third!
25:03In 1950, our Nash Super Tipper tractor
25:06retailed at 186 quid
25:09and was advertised as suitable
25:11for both the farm and the garden.
25:1375 years later, it's still running,
25:16but only just.
25:18Shall we disembark?
25:19Yeah.
25:20It certainly felt really powerful.
25:21Yeah, great fun, though.
25:24Thank God we brought the starter cord.
25:26Ready?
25:27Yeah.
25:35Or maybe not.
25:38Off you go.
25:41That's it!
25:44You've heard of a bull in a china shop,
25:46but what about a tractor?
25:49Can he stop it?
25:50That's the main thing.
25:51No, he's straight in the shed.
25:55Can I just say,
25:56if I'm correct?
25:58I was terrified because
26:00the cutout switch I don't think works
26:02and I thought this will blunder
26:03its way through anything.
26:04Yeah, well...
26:05Yeah.
26:05You've got to actually stall it
26:07on the throttle.
26:07That electronical stop
26:09I don't think works.
26:10You could have shoved the choke down.
26:12Al, I was panicking.
26:14No, you didn't.
26:14You took control.
26:15I wanted to stop there.
26:17Once we realised you were safe,
26:18it was really funny.
26:19It's quite heavy steering, isn't it, H?
26:22I know, it is, honey.
26:23The steering's heavy.
26:24Yeah, you won't get many over-60s driving this.
26:26No, you won't.
26:27I'm knackered.
26:29So, mate, I'm absolutely trashed.
26:32I'm going to have to sit down.
26:33Come on, let's go and sit down on the bench.
26:35Oh, dear.
26:37Look, boys, I think...
26:38Look, we've got it going.
26:40It runs, right?
26:41We just, you know, at some point
26:43give it a wash before sale.
26:44But basically, man,
26:46that is something that someone
26:48is going to love
26:49who's into those kind of
26:50industrial kind of things, you know?
26:51They've just got to tinker
26:52with the carburettor.
26:53Yeah, OK.
26:53Well, we can tinker with that
26:54and we can clean it,
26:55but basically, lads,
26:57we have a three-wheel tipper
26:59slash dumper
27:01slash roller
27:02which is a runner.
27:04And it certainly makes you laugh.
27:06And it makes you laugh.
27:07Yes.
27:07Exactly, mate.
27:07It's fun.
27:08Yeah, it nearly kills us,
27:09but it nearly makes us laugh.
27:14So, with the tipper sorted,
27:15next day,
27:16we're back on the standard.
27:19Alan thinks we've got
27:20an ignition problem,
27:21so he starts with the distributor.
27:23So, what we're going to do
27:24is take the distributor off,
27:25strip it down
27:25and see if I can make that work.
27:26Right, OK.
27:27Basically, I need to loosen off
27:28these two bolts
27:28and this should just lift out the engine.
27:31Out it comes
27:32and immediately, Alan notices something.
27:35Skid, come and look at this.
27:36This may or may not be
27:37a contributory issue
27:38to our problem.
27:39Yeah.
27:39Look at that bolt.
27:40It's touching the distributor case.
27:42That's going to short it out.
27:42Is that the live feed?
27:43That's the live feed
27:44and this is actually loose.
27:45Look, you can move it.
27:46See that?
27:47Slide it along.
27:47Oh, yeah.
27:49What do you need to do?
27:49Bend that down?
27:50Yeah, we'll do that.
27:51Take it off.
27:51Bend that down.
27:52Make it tighter.
27:52Yeah, yeah.
27:53It may have been
27:54definitely a contributory cause.
27:55Well, with vibration,
27:56it might be just occasionally arky.
27:58Let's get this top plate off
27:59and we can see
27:59what we've got to work with.
28:00Yeah, yeah.
28:01Modern cars have
28:02computer-controlled ignition,
28:04but engines from this era
28:05were run by
28:07electromechanical distributors
28:08like this.
28:09They were full of
28:10small moving parts
28:11that were easily disturbed.
28:13That hair,
28:14there's a blonde hair there.
28:15I'm not sure
28:15where that came from.
28:15But I can tell you what,
28:17that's definitely not Henry's.
28:18Henry would not have been
28:19delving in here
28:20and also that's not highlighted.
28:21Very good point.
28:22Yeah, so let's throw it away, mate.
28:27Five minutes later,
28:28it's reassembled.
28:29Can you think you've
28:30sorted the problem?
28:31I think it will.
28:32I think all these things
28:33add up.
28:33You know, a little bit here,
28:34a little bit there.
28:35Hopefully, Al.
28:36I mean, you never know.
28:38Back in it goes
28:39and we try again.
28:41Okay, here we go.
28:41Hang on.
28:43Come on in.
28:43Hey, bloody hell.
28:46Hey, by the way,
28:47the veterinary
28:48says that she's
28:50a little overweight.
28:51Yes.
28:51About how many biscuits?
28:52Probably a couple of packs.
28:56Right, okay.
28:56Here we go.
29:04It's advanced, isn't it?
29:09Try it.
29:13You broke it.
29:13It's good.
29:15You've broken it, Al.
29:16Right, right.
29:17Oh, hey!
29:18What was that?
29:19So there you go.
29:20Even our resident genius
29:22doesn't always get it right.
29:24What we should have done
29:25was took a picture
29:26of the setup
29:26before we took it apart.
29:28We were certainly too excited
29:29to get on with the repair
29:30that we didn't take a picture.
29:31The only solution
29:32is to dig out the hand crank
29:34and realign the pistons.
29:36There you go, you're on.
29:37Gonna get the piston number one.
29:39Top dead.
29:39Top dead centre
29:40on compression stroke.
29:41Right.
29:41And I can see
29:42where the rotor arm
29:42is pointing to
29:43and align the distributor cap
29:44in the correct place.
29:45Because I would suggest
29:46we're a little bit out.
29:47Right.
29:47Turn it over
29:47until you hear a hiss
29:49from my finger.
29:50I'll start...
29:51Keep going.
29:51One.
29:52Keep going.
29:52Two turns later...
29:54Stop there.
29:55Stop there.
29:59Alan seems confident
30:00that the engine won't play ball.
30:03It's on two cylinders.
30:04OK.
30:05The back two cylinders
30:06are firing towards.
30:06Yes, we have four aren't running.
30:08Pulled the caps off,
30:08made no difference
30:09to the engine at all.
30:10OK, well,
30:10at least we've got two running.
30:12The same engine
30:13was later used
30:14in the Mark IV Jag,
30:16so it was well thought of.
30:18But there's a lot more
30:19cleaning and adjusting
30:20before it's running
30:21on all four cylinders
30:22and ticking over properly.
30:25That is lovely.
30:26Turn it off
30:26and see if it starts
30:27on its own
30:28with no throttle or anything.
30:30Here comes the acid test.
30:34Oh, look at that.
30:35Mate, that is lovely.
30:36Fantastic.
30:36Sounds amazing, doesn't it?
30:37Yeah.
30:38Alan, Guy,
30:40you are a pair of geniuses.
30:42I've just been an assistant.
30:44It was a proper team effort
30:45this morning.
30:45Mate, it's absolutely fantastic.
30:47And obviously,
30:48things really came together
30:49when I arrived.
30:50Yeah, once the blonde highlights
30:52out the distributor,
30:53it seems to be fine.
30:54I think that's what
30:55was jamming it, Al.
30:56I think it's a long way
30:57from a cast,
30:57like it's everyone.
30:58Quiet.
30:59Tea.
31:00Come on.
31:04Suitably refreshed,
31:05me and Skid move on
31:06to the final stage
31:07of the resto,
31:09enhancing the military theme
31:10with some extra
31:11US Army stars.
31:15It's all in the prep,
31:16but I think these couple
31:20of US Army stars
31:21will just,
31:22you know,
31:24just finish it off.
31:28Right, there we go.
31:30Yeah.
31:32Skid carefully marks up
31:33the position for the stencil,
31:35but there's a problem.
31:37I can't find any
31:38low-tech contact adhesive,
31:40so I thought...
31:40Spray mount is what
31:41we were looking for,
31:42so we're using
31:43what every child has.
31:45Yeah, great.
31:46We're going to use this.
31:47Get wiping.
31:48Just do the bit...
31:49It's the bits
31:50that are going to be
31:51a nightmare
31:51are the corners
31:52and the lines
31:53of the stars, etc.
31:54You need it stuck down
31:55because otherwise
31:56the paint gets under it.
31:58It's going to bleed,
31:59isn't it?
31:59I don't know
32:00this is going to work.
32:01I think it will.
32:02I don't think
32:02there's going to be
32:03a problem.
32:04I think it's going
32:04to go rather well.
32:05What could possibly
32:06go wrong?
32:07Not a lot.
32:08The five-pointed star
32:09has been used
32:10by the US Army
32:12since 1942
32:13when it was introduced
32:15to identify their gear.
32:17I mean,
32:17if this was
32:18in World War II,
32:19yeah?
32:20Yeah.
32:20We'd be doing this
32:21under fire.
32:22I'm sure of it.
32:23No, they did this
32:24before the D-Day landings.
32:25Oh, do they?
32:26Yes, so that the planes
32:27could see who was theirs
32:28when they got
32:30in the forests
32:30and things.
32:32Aerosol paint
32:32didn't become
32:33widely available
32:34until the mid-1950s.
32:37But for something
32:38like this,
32:38it's a godsend.
32:39Not that Skid
32:40always approves.
32:42Right, leave that now.
32:43Let's do the other side.
32:43No, I'm going to do
32:43the US Army.
32:45Just leave it.
32:46You're going to make it
32:47run under the...
32:48I'm not making it worse.
32:49Oh, hang on.
32:50Leave it alone.
32:52Ah.
32:55Just leave it, please.
32:56You'll come back
32:57in a minute.
32:58I know you're looking
32:58and think that needs more.
32:59Just leave it a minute.
33:00All right.
33:01Patience.
33:04We repeat the process
33:05on the other side,
33:07by which time
33:07the first side is dry
33:09and ready
33:10for a big reveal.
33:15That's not gone well.
33:17That is absolutely terrible.
33:23We should have got
33:25spray mount.
33:26You couldn't have done it
33:27worse.
33:29Even if you half close
33:30your eyes,
33:30it's rubbish.
33:31So Alan's not the only genius
33:33who occasionally
33:34makes a bad move.
33:36Can I draw your attention
33:37away from the square?
33:39I don't think we've ever
33:45got something so wrong.
33:46No, that is proper wrong.
33:48What are we going to do?
33:50Let it dry
33:51and try and teacup
33:51those bits out.
33:52We won't teacup them out.
33:54I might have a go
33:55because it's thicker
33:56on the letters.
33:58It's not good.
33:59It doesn't bode well.
34:00I warned you.
34:05Tomorrow,
34:05we're going to take
34:06the standard
34:07on a multi-surface
34:08military road trip
34:10to see how it runs.
34:11With a bit of luck,
34:13it'll get dirty enough
34:14to hide the stars.
34:15But after all
34:16our engine problems,
34:18will our standard
34:19go the distance?
34:19Look at you're bouncing!
34:20Three weeks ago
34:33in a shed near Bristol.
34:34Now that is extraordinary.
34:36It's a standard 14.
34:38We found a 1950s
34:40British saloon car
34:41in US military trim.
34:44We tested it,
34:46repaired it.
34:47It bogs down a little bit,
34:48doesn't it?
34:49And enhanced it.
34:50In a manner of speaking.
34:52That is absolutely terrible.
34:56Now after a little bit
34:57of tidying up
34:58of our efforts,
34:59it's ready for
34:59a proper test drive.
35:01Come road trip.
35:03Have I got
35:04a lovely day
35:05for us lined up?
35:06Go on.
35:06Interesting.
35:07Okay, so now look,
35:08I'll take you through it
35:09bit by bit.
35:10We have before us
35:11a faux military vehicle.
35:14Now,
35:14it also has
35:15off-road tyres
35:16at the back.
35:18That's good
35:18for gripping the motor.
35:19Yeah.
35:19So the big question
35:20in my mind
35:21is,
35:22is there any point
35:24in them?
35:25Only if you go off-road.
35:26Yeah.
35:26Exactly.
35:27Then once we've had
35:28our fill of that,
35:30I thought we might
35:30take it on a little
35:31road adventure
35:32just to try it out.
35:34Where,
35:34I hear you ask.
35:35Where?
35:36What we're going to do
35:37is we
35:38are going to
35:40one of my favourite
35:41museums.
35:42Oh.
35:42Yeah,
35:43which is obviously
35:44a military museum.
35:46Yes.
35:46That involves
35:47our helicopters
35:48and airplanes.
35:48Of course it will do,
35:49yeah.
35:49It might do,
35:50yeah.
35:50Yeah.
35:51Yeah.
35:51Anyway,
35:52we're going to
35:52Middle Wallop.
35:53Oh, good.
35:53Ah.
35:54We're going to go
35:55to the Army
35:55Air Museum.
35:57Oh, that's very cool.
35:58Okay,
35:58but on the way,
35:59I thought we might
36:00just have
36:01a little stop-off
36:02for Scorch.
36:04Okay.
36:04Yeah?
36:05Excellent.
36:05Well, let's hope
36:06it makes it, Fuzz.
36:06If not,
36:07I'm blaming you to.
36:08It's going to be fine.
36:09I've got a feeling
36:10that this is going
36:11to be one of those
36:12great,
36:13trouble-free journeys.
36:16So off we go.
36:18It's a shame
36:18that Guy's not here
36:19to enjoy the fun,
36:21but we are going to.
36:22I can't believe Guy's ill.
36:25I know.
36:25I'm a bit worried
36:26about him.
36:26He's never sick.
36:28He's never ill.
36:29Our off-road test track
36:30is my mate Nigel's farm.
36:33Are those knobbly
36:34rear tyres for show
36:35or for go?
36:37Only one way to find out.
36:38Foot down
36:39and into second.
36:46Where's the knob?
36:47You've lost your knob.
36:48The knob's come off.
36:49Just go knobblish
36:50if you're all right.
36:51Yeah.
36:52Well, look.
36:53Oh.
36:53A little roller
36:56bounce up there.
36:58Okay,
36:59we'll find the knob
36:59in a minute.
37:01Here we go.
37:04I think that's really fast.
37:05Do you know what?
37:06It feels really fast.
37:07That is pretty quick,
37:08isn't it?
37:09In the 1950s,
37:11standards were
37:12occasionally used
37:13for rallying
37:14and judging from
37:15the way this one handles,
37:16it should have happened
37:17more often.
37:18Put it round there,
37:19sir.
37:20Come on.
37:20Here we go.
37:21Oh, here we are.
37:21Oh, hey.
37:27Right, Tim,
37:28you can stay on the strip
37:29down the middle.
37:29Back spring seats
37:30are working really well.
37:31Are they good?
37:32Yeah, really good.
37:33I'm trying to stay
37:33on the strip.
37:34Watch it, bouncing!
37:35Hey, hey!
37:36I think this is,
37:41I think this has potential
37:43to be a classic rally car.
37:46It does.
37:47Or a bit of a trialer,
37:48anyway.
37:49Maybe slap some bigger
37:51springs on
37:51so it's a bit taller.
37:52You think you're
37:53a Ford Escort,
37:54wouldn't you?
37:54Yeah.
37:54This is such fun.
38:00This is great, actually.
38:01I love it.
38:03So far,
38:04it's passing the test
38:04with flying colours.
38:06It's not even overheating.
38:07Let's go.
38:08I'm going to see
38:08a full throttle launch.
38:10On the right
38:11or the apex of the bend.
38:12Coming up to the bend.
38:13Don't bend.
38:14I want to break the car.
38:16I have to admit,
38:18I had no idea
38:19the standard
38:19would drive so well.
38:21But who's complaining?
38:22Back on the blacktop
38:26before we head
38:27for the museum
38:28in Middlewallop.
38:29Time for a tea break.
38:31I'm not worried
38:31about this getting
38:32to Middlewallop
38:33at all.
38:34No.
38:34We've even got
38:35a working fuel gauge.
38:36Yeah.
38:37We've got a working
38:37everything gauge, man.
38:38And we can tell
38:39that it's a working
38:39fuel gauge
38:40because it's
38:41just above zero.
38:45Yeah, don't start,
38:46all right?
38:47Just because I...
38:48Look, we've got to sell it
38:49after we've been.
38:50That's true.
38:51You don't want to sell it
38:51with the surface of fuel.
38:53Exactly.
38:54Here we go.
38:55Look.
38:56I'm parched.
38:57Yeah, come on.
38:58Quick cup of tea
38:58and then we'll get on.
38:59Yeah.
39:04Now look, right.
39:05I think we need
39:06a bit of clankage
39:07only because
39:08this car has excelled.
39:10Yeah, it's brilliant.
39:12It really is.
39:12Amazingly performance.
39:13Do you know what?
39:14It is really shocking.
39:16No rattles,
39:16no bangs,
39:17no streaks.
39:18Nothing.
39:18And I tell you what,
39:19there's no spluttering
39:20on the throttle?
39:21No.
39:22We were doing
39:22at least 35 miles an hour.
39:23I have no doubt
39:25that it's going to be
39:27an accomplished car
39:29on the open road.
39:30I think so.
39:31Right, drink up.
39:32Time's money.
39:33I feel like some cake
39:34at the Army Museum.
39:35Well, that'd be good.
39:39It's another 40 miles
39:40to Middle Wallop,
39:41so a good test
39:43for our car.
39:44Never beaten
39:45fourth gear off-road
39:46because I was
39:47hammering it in third.
39:49No.
39:50And that's
39:50travelling along nice.
39:51Look at that.
39:51It is, yeah.
39:52From the late 30s onwards,
39:54Standard began
39:55to call these
39:56Flying 14s
39:57because of their
39:58aerodynamic styling.
40:00So the Army
40:00Flying Museum
40:01seems like a good
40:03end point
40:03for our road trip.
40:05Come on then, mate.
40:06We'll just have
40:06a quick little homage.
40:07Yeah, we need
40:08an education, don't we?
40:09Seeing as the Standard's
40:10got us here.
40:10Yeah.
40:10As curator Susan
40:13explains,
40:15the museum
40:15tells the story
40:16of the Army
40:17Flying Corps
40:18and the various
40:19aircraft they've used.
40:21During World War II,
40:22Army gliders
40:23played a vital role
40:24in the D-Day landings.
40:26Can you imagine, right?
40:27No.
40:28I'd go,
40:28all right, Al,
40:29Fuzz,
40:29what we're going to do
40:30is we're going to get
40:31into this glider,
40:32right?
40:33You're going to be
40:33towed across the channel,
40:34right?
40:35And then we're going
40:36to release the wire
40:37and you're going to
40:38crash into a field.
40:39There are helicopters
40:41of all sizes
40:42and shapes
40:43and some real oddities
40:44like this jeep
40:46fitted with chopper blades.
40:48Sorry,
40:49so hang on a second.
40:50So they were looking
40:51about how to get
40:52behind enemy lines
40:53in World War II.
40:54Yeah, yeah.
40:54Some really clever soul
40:57thought a Willis jeep
40:58might actually be able
40:59to be controlled
41:00using a rotor blade.
41:03Yeah,
41:03I mean,
41:03it's sort of like
41:04almost an autogyro system.
41:05Oh, okay,
41:06all right.
41:07So they were dropped out,
41:08were they?
41:08Floats down.
41:09And then floated down.
41:10Like a sycamore seed.
41:11Oh, right, I see.
41:12Can you imagine
41:12with the Willis jeep?
41:14Look,
41:14we're just going to
41:14float you down
41:15on the rotors
41:16like an autorotate.
41:17I'd just say,
41:18please don't.
41:19Just go,
41:20look,
41:20I'll drive there.
41:21It's fine.
41:22Whether anyone
41:23ever tried
41:24attaching chopper blades
41:25to a standard 14
41:27like ours,
41:28who knows?
41:29But either way,
41:29it flies.
41:31Have you enjoyed
41:32a little brief whiz round?
41:34It's been worth
41:35the drive.
41:36That's right.
41:36I mean,
41:36we'd like to present you
41:38with our very own
41:39exhibit
41:40for you to keep
41:42at the museum
41:42for the rest of time.
41:45No,
41:45she won't want it.
41:46Oh,
41:46me?
41:47Oh,
41:47right.
41:47I thought you meant
41:48the standard car.
41:49No,
41:50no.
41:50She wouldn't want that.
41:51That would be great.
41:52Oh,
41:52well,
41:52I'm here.
41:53I'm available.
41:53I could just
41:54sort of live
41:55in the Huey
41:55quite happily.
41:57I just need a kettle.
41:58Yeah.
41:58That's it,
41:59really.
41:59Just pop out
42:00and tell tales.
42:01Absolutely.
42:02Actually,
42:02talking about people
42:03who like tea,
42:03we'd better find out
42:04from Chopper Roy
42:04whether that car's
42:05worth anything.
42:06Go on then.
42:06All right,
42:07Susan,
42:07thank you so very much.
42:08Thank you very much
42:08for coming.
42:09All right,
42:09it's an absolute pleasure.
42:10I'll be back
42:11very shortly.
42:11Next day,
42:17back at base,
42:18we find out.
42:20Can I just apologise
42:21for our stenciling?
42:23Oh,
42:24you're guilty.
42:24By taking it off road,
42:26we've managed to
42:27kind of sort of
42:27subdue,
42:28you know,
42:29the problem.
42:30I think it's kind of
42:31blended it well.
42:32Extra patina.
42:33Yeah.
42:33Now,
42:33I've got to tell you,
42:34mate,
42:34okay,
42:35this thing
42:36absolutely flies.
42:38Is it?
42:39It's an acquired taste.
42:40Let's just
42:41face the music on it.
42:43Yeah.
42:44What do you reckon?
42:45It's going to be niche,
42:46but you only want
42:47two people that want it.
42:48You're there,
42:49aren't you?
42:49So it's going to,
42:50oh,
42:51mid to high threes.
42:53Mid would be a bit mean.
42:55High threes,
42:55definitely.
42:56Okay.
42:57Okay,
42:57hang on,
42:58well,
42:58let's call that
42:59four.
43:02We paid Russell
43:03four four for the car
43:05plus the tipper
43:06and the scrambler,
43:07so not a bad price.
43:09I reckon the dump truck
43:10and the bike
43:11is a grand.
43:13Yeah.
43:13Yeah.
43:13Well,
43:14there you go then.
43:14All right.
43:15So,
43:16well,
43:16what have you done?
43:17Made a monkey,
43:17haven't we?
43:18Yeah,
43:18that's right.
43:19Well,
43:19500.
43:19Yeah,
43:20that's it.
43:21Approximately.
43:21I think so.
43:22Dependent,
43:22obviously,
43:23whether we're getting
43:24late threes
43:24or early fours.
43:26Well,
43:26that's true,
43:27but yeah,
43:27prospective monkey.
43:28All right,
43:29mate,
43:29so there's potential
43:30500 in it.
43:31Yeah,
43:31it's a proper crowd puller.
43:32Yeah,
43:32oh,
43:32it's a crowd puller,
43:33mate.
43:33It would,
43:33wouldn't it?
43:34Yeah,
43:34rather like you,
43:35Roy.
43:35Yeah.
43:36Not the crowd,
43:37anyway.
43:37It's lovely to see Roy.
43:38Isn't it nice?
43:39I do like the t-shirt.
43:39Yeah.
