00:00So we broke a big story this morning on the website about a food influencer, Michael Duarte, who went by the handle Food With Bare Hands.
00:09His family announced over the weekend that he had died.
00:14And all they said is that it was a horrible incident.
00:18There was no other description of what had happened.
00:21Well, we got the information this morning about a camping trip that Michael had gone on with friends that did, as the family described it, take a horrible turn when they decided that he was having some sort of mental break.
00:38And the people who were with him decided that they needed to call in EMS, paramedics, and police.
00:46Sheriff's deputies also arrived.
00:48This happened in Texas.
00:49And unfortunately, during, there was an altercation between Michael and the officials who had shown up to help him, and he ended up getting shot.
01:00So there's a lot of...
01:02Yeah, so the sheriffs basically said that they got a call from 911 for a male subject acting erratically with the knife.
01:08When they get there, he approached them threateningly, and basically he wasn't obeying their commands.
01:15And then at one point was coming at the officers and said, I'm going to kill you.
01:19So one of the officers fired two shots.
01:23He was then transported to the hospital in San Antonio.
01:26That's where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.
01:28And the irony to it is they came to help him and ended up killing him.
01:33Correct.
01:33And it's, I guess, a week or so.
01:36Him and his wife just had an anniversary.
01:38They have a daughter.
01:40I mean, it's just a tragic story.
01:41Was he camping?
01:41Was it just with friends?
01:42Or were family members there as well?
01:43We don't know if family members were there.
01:44We're not sure if, obviously, his wife was there.
01:47But, I mean, just tragic.
01:49And this guy had, separately, you know, millions and millions of followers, was known for his food blogging and whatnot.
01:54And you just...
01:55But, you know, this is a problem when you have people with mental health issues.
01:59How do you handle it when they have a break?
02:02Right.
02:02Right?
02:03And we heard a lot about this during the pandemic, that there would be...
02:07And it's gotten worse.
02:08Yeah.
02:08That people would call for paramedics, but when police show up...
02:12And some people feel like the answer is that you don't send armed officers...
02:16But if someone's coming...
02:17If an officer's coming after you with a knife saying he's going to kill you...
02:20I agree.
02:20It's like, what are you going to do?
02:21So, I don't think that's legit.
02:24But...
02:24Well, I didn't say whether it was legit.
02:26No, I mean, I'm just saying I don't think it's legit to say you should go unarmed if somebody has a deadly weapon.
02:32Right.
02:32So, I'm just saying I don't think that argument is legit.
02:35Right.
02:35Well, and we should say we don't know...
02:37There was no part in the report about Michael being armed here, right?
02:40He has a knife.
02:41He had a knife.
02:41He did have a knife.
02:42He had a knife.
02:42He was coming at them with a knife.
02:44Just the final thing is people look at celebrities and they say, oh, my God, this guy is rich.
02:48This guy is famous.
02:49And they think they just have the life.
02:51And that is just the gloss.
02:54You can't.
02:54You know?
02:56And what's underneath it doesn't translate always to, oh, they have such a good life.
03:02It just doesn't.
03:03And people kind of mistake that a lot and think, if I only had money, if I only had this.
03:09And it just never goes that way.
03:11Hey, everybody.
03:13It's Denisha Valentine based out of Orlando, Florida.
03:15And this situation is very sad.
03:18And I'm very curious to see, as the details come out, what really happened.
03:22But I do think that if a call was made to police in regards to somebody having a mental breakdown,
03:28the precautions should be different because, clearly, he was not in his right state of mind.
03:33So we've seen it happen many times where somebody has, you know, called the police due to having some sort of mental issues.
03:39And they end up, you know, unalive.
03:41And I think there should be a different type of force that should be used in those type of situations.
03:48That's the debate.
03:49I know you want them to, and I get the call for a softer hand.
03:53But when that person is armed, it becomes dangerous to others and also to themselves.
