00:00Well, thank you very much.
00:02This is a big day, big night.
00:04It's very important what has taken place because
00:09we've seen how good government can be and how
00:13bad government can be if people don't know what
00:16they're doing.
00:17For the past 43 days, Democrats in Congress
00:20shut down the government of the United States in an
00:23attempt to extort American taxpayers for
00:26hundreds of billions of dollars for illegal
00:28aliens and people that came into our country
00:32illegally from gangs, from prisons, from mental
00:35institutions.
00:36They wanted to pay them $1.5 trillion, which would
00:39have really hurt our healthcare businesses and
00:44our recipients at levels never seen before.
00:47Today, we're sending a clear message that we will
00:50never give in to extortion because that's what it was.
00:53They tried to extort.
00:54The Democrats tried to extort our country in just
00:58moment, I'll sign a bill exactly like we asked
01:01Democrats to send us all along, many days ago.
01:05This cost the country $1.5 trillion, this little
01:09excursion that they took us on.
01:12Republicans never wanted a shutdown and voted 15 times
01:16for a clean continuation of funding.
01:19There's never been a time when one or the other party
01:23ever didn't sign a continuation.
01:26It's just a continuation, not a big deal.
01:28It's a continuation, and we'll talk later.
01:31Yet the extremists in the other party insisted on
01:35creating the longest government shutdown in
01:37American history, and they did it purely for
01:40political reasons.
01:41I want to thank Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate
01:44Majority Leader John Thune, as well as House
01:47Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Majority Whip Tom
01:50Emmer and numerous other great Republican leaders and
01:54congressmen and senators who are here, who, frankly,
01:57spent a long time in Washington getting this
01:59thing to go away.
02:01Over the past seven weeks, the Democrats shut down
02:03has inflicted massive harm.
02:06They caused 20,000 flights to be canceled or delayed.
02:10They departed so many times, so late.
02:14People were hurt so badly.
02:16Nobody's ever seen anything like this one.
02:18This was a no-brainer.
02:20This was an easy extension.
02:23But they didn't want to do it the easy way.
02:24They had to do it the hard way.
02:25And they looked very bad, the Democrats do.
02:28They deprived more than one million government
02:30workers from their paychecks and cut off food
02:33stamp benefits for millions and millions more
02:35Americans in need.
02:37They caused tens of thousands of federal
02:39contractors and small businesses to go unpaid.
02:43And the total effect of the damage here, antics
02:46scores, will take weeks and probably months to
02:49really calculate accurately, including the
02:52serious harm that they did to our economy and to
02:54people and to families.
02:56So I just want to tell the American people you
03:00should not forget this.
03:01When we come up to midterms and other things, don't
03:03forget what they've done to our country.
03:05I also want to call for a termination to the
03:09filibuster so that this can never happen again.
03:12If we had the filibuster terminated, this would
03:14never happen again.
03:16And don't forget, we have another date coming up in
03:18the not too distant future.
03:19We can never let this happen again.
03:22And we should be able to pass great, really great
03:24legislation.
03:25So I say terminate the filibuster because, by the
03:29way, the Democrats will do it immediately if they
03:31ever assumed office, which hopefully they won't.
03:36I want to also thank the eight Senate Democrats who
03:38finally did the right thing in voting to end this
03:42craziness, this madness.
03:43But unfortunately, the vast majority of
03:46congressional Democrats were happy for millions of
03:50Americans to suffer.
03:51They really did suffer, too.
03:53And the Democrats admitted.
03:54They said, well, no, we finally have a point.
03:56Even though people have to suffer, we finally have a
03:59point, and that didn't work out too well for them.
04:02So this is no way to run a country.
04:04I hope we can all agree that the government should
04:07never be shut down again.
04:08Again, end the filibuster, terminate the
04:11filibuster, it'll never happen again.
04:13So with my signature, the federal government will
04:17now resume normal operations.
04:18And my administration and our partners in Congress
04:22will continue our work to lower the cost of living,
04:25restore public safety, grow our economy, and make
04:28America affordable again for all Americans.
04:32Again, but it all includes fixing the healthcare
04:35system that Democrats broke with the disaster
04:39known as Obamacare.
04:40Obamacare was a disaster from day one.
04:43It's done nothing but go up.
04:45And if you remember President Barack Hussein Obama,
04:49when he came up with this crazy idea, he said,
04:53everything's going to be great.
04:54Rates are going to go down.
04:56Payments are going to go down.
04:57Everything's going to go down.
04:59It went the exact opposite with the biggest increase
05:02of any of healthcare in any country.
05:04It's a disaster.
05:06And I'm calling today for insurance companies not to
05:10be paid, but for the money, this massive amount of
05:12money to be paid directly to the people of our country
05:16so that they can buy their own healthcare, which will
05:19be far better and far less expensive than the disaster
05:23known as Obamacare.
05:25And I've had, I think, great support.
05:27I've even had Democrat support.
