00:00We've been on the air for almost 23 years, and I've had to do some hard monologues along the way,

00:07but this will, this one's the hardest, because late last night, early this morning, we lost

00:12someone very special who was much too young to go. Jimmy Kimmel broke down in tears while paying

00:19tribute to his childhood best friend, Cleto Escobedo III, who passed away this week.

00:25Kimmel shared how he and Escobedo became inseparable after they met as neighbors in

00:29Spring Valley, Nevada, in 1977. There was a boy who lived on my block.

00:36He lived across the street and two houses over, and I'm sorry, he was a little bit older than me.

00:44He was a year older than me. His name was Cleto, but we all called him Junior.

00:50Kimmel also gushed over his late pal's musical skills, saying Escobedo was a child prodigy

00:56who would get standing ovations in junior high school. When Kimmel started his eponymous talk

01:01show in January 2003, he called Escobedo to lead the band.

01:06I mean, everyone loves Cleto. He's, uh, everyone here at the show, we are devastated by this. It's not,

01:11it's just not fair.

01:13During Kimmel's heartbreaking 20-minute tribute, Cleto's mother, Sylvia Escobedo,

01:18was in the audience, as the late musician's father, Cleto Escobedo II, was on stage playing with the band.

01:24As Page Six reported, Cleto died after complications stemming from a liver transplant.

01:29He was 59. We were told that the band leader was hospitalized last week,

01:34and Kimmel canceled his taping November 6th at the last minute to be by his friend's side.

01:38Cleto was the leader of his band, Cleto and the Cletones, for nearly 23 years.

01:44His father played the tenor and alto saxophone alongside his son.

01:48Due to Kimmel's heartbreaking loss, he has canceled his late-night talk show on Wednesday and Thursday.
