A massive £3 billion canalside housing development in west London close to the route of the Notting Hill Carnival has been given the green light.Kensington & Chelsea council approved a planning application from developers Ballymore and supermarket giant Sainsbury’s in a four to one vote at a three hour planning committee meeting last night.

00:00we've been writing a planning document that will guide the development of at
00:08least 3,500 much-needed new homes and 2,000 new jobs within a new quarter in
00:14the north of the borough the document will deliver a vision for Kensal Canal
00:18side to maximize the opportunities for the area by combining background studies
00:23the community aspirations and working with the landowners it tackles the key
00:28issues surrounding the delivery of the site in early engagement sessions you
00:33told us affordable and social housing was a key community priority access to
00:39open space and connectivity is important the development should be
00:43environmentally sustainable workspace and access to jobs is important for local
00:48residents the SPD will ensure that density does not compromise on quality it will
00:54identify suitable opportunities for height whilst responding to context allowing
00:59us to achieve the optimum number of high quality affordable and social homes the
01:04SPD will require creatively designed pockets of green and blue space to
01:08connect into the existing open spaces of little wormwood scrubs the cemetery and
01:13canal new bridges and pedestrian and cycle lanes north and south will tie the
01:19existing area into this new quarter bringing with it increased access and
01:23opportunities for the local community we are looking at mechanisms through the
01:27planning process to achieve the most environmentally sustainable design at
01:32build out stage and beyond access and demand for workspace and jobs is
01:37changing Kensal Canal side will be home to resilient and flexible workspace that
01:43meets the needs of the local community and supports the creative economy the
01:47workspace will be focused within a new neighborhood center we providing the
01:52superstore and new cultural and community spaces providing a place to live work and
01:58visit Kensal Canal side
