Changemaker in Documentary Storytelling and Criminal Justice Advocacy (United States)

Gabrielle Caplan is an Emmy Award–winning documentary filmmaker and journalist whose work shines a spotlight on the human cost of mass incarceration and systemic injustice. Through meticulous reporting, evocative storytelling, and a relentless commitment to truth, she amplifies the voices of those often overlooked by the criminal justice system, turning personal stories into catalysts for public awareness, dialogue, and reform.

Over her career, Gabrielle has produced high-impact journalism and documentaries for internationally acclaimed platforms including VICE News, WIRED, Snap Judgment, and the BBC, blending investigative rigor with narrative craft to illuminate inequities and inspire action.

As Co-Producer at Boardwalk Pictures, Gabrielle played a key role in creating documentaries that explore the intersection of law, society, and human resilience. Her projects tackle topics such as the personal journeys of formerly incarcerated individuals navigating life post-release, and the systemic forces that perpetuate cycles of poverty and imprisonment. Through her storytelling, complex legal realities are humanized, giving audiences a deeply personal understanding of societal issues.

During her tenure as Associate Producer at VICE Media, Gabrielle produced investigative features on capital punishment, wrongful convictions, and prison conditions. Notably, her work on the series Inside the American Justice System revealed systemic flaws that affect marginalized communities, earning critical acclaim for both its narrative power and social impact. At VICE News, she produced packages for VICE News Tonight and digital platforms, combining journalism with documentary techniques to make urgent societal issues both compelling and accessible.

Gabrielle also expanded her influence into audio storytelling as an Audio Producer at BBC Studios, creating podcasts for the Shortcuts program on Radio 4 that explored social justice and legal inequities. Her role as Associate Producer at Refinery29 further demonstrates her versatility, producing content that connects audiences to critical cultural and social narratives.

Beyond storytelling, Gabrielle’s work embodies advocacy. By spotlighting the voices of the incarcerated, survivors, and activists, she strengthens public understanding and drives systemic accountability. Her documentaries have been used by educational institutions, advocacy organizations, and legal reform initiatives to foster informed debate and policy reflection, illustrating the tangible impact of media as a tool for justice.

00:00Hi, Gabrielle Kaplan here. Just wanted to say thank you so much from the bottom of my heart
00:05for the recognition that is this Icons of Change Award. I've been making stories around criminal
00:11justice and the death penalty for about eight or nine years now and I've seen firsthand the impact
00:18that great storytelling can have on changing the narrative and changing public opinion when it
00:23comes to incarceration or capital punishment. So thank you so much to everyone involved.
00:30And for recognizing my work. I really appreciate it. I just want to highlight that, of course,
00:35this work could never happen without the people being willing to share their stories with me and
00:40journalists and documentary filmmakers. It's so crucial, especially in today's landscape in America,
00:47that we keep telling these stories. So, yes, thank you so much again. And I look forward to
00:54congratulating the rest of the awardees.
