00:00I'm the bad guy.
00:04Duh.
00:05The internet's newest bad girl crush is the e-girl.
00:09The e-girl is commonly identified by four personality traits.
00:13First is her aesthetic, which comes from a mix of influences like anime,
00:17cosplay, and the early 2000s.
00:20Part K-pop, part rave, part Disney princess, with a dash of emo.
00:24It's like my e-girl, like sickly look,
00:28where I look like I just woke up and blew my nose and I have pneumonia.
00:35Second is her online presence, which is right there in her name.
00:39The E stands for electronic.
00:41Hey guys, it's Linsor.
00:44Welcome back to my channel.
00:47Thirdly, the e-girl's known for being interested in activities
00:51that are typically catered to guys.
00:53She shows up at school the day after someone with their same name
00:56breaks our top score.
00:57I mean, you kidding me?
00:58Exactly.
00:59So she's gotta be Mad Max.
01:00She's gotta be.
01:01And plus she's skateboard, so she's pretty awesome.
01:04And her fourth trait is her attitude.
01:06She's confident, brash, progressive, and nonchalant.
01:10Even if she relies on followers,
01:12she probably acts as though she doesn't care if anyone is watching her.
01:16To everyone who comments shit like,
01:18I don't get the hype around her.
01:19She's not even that funny.
01:21I understand completely.
01:22I don't know why people watch this shit either.
01:24All I do is play Animal Crossing and cry.
01:26She's also not necessarily female.
01:29The e-girl and e-boy are differentiated by their particular aesthetics, not gender.
01:34The e-boy channels more of a soft boy skater vibe.
01:38While the e-girl label kicked off as a derogatory nickname
01:41for attractive young females in typically male online spaces,
01:45I don't know how, but she is cheating.
01:47No one can be that attractive and this skilled at a video game.
01:49The e-girl and e-boy rose up in the late 2010s as a social media aesthetics trend
01:54and TikTok subculture.
01:56I blacked out.
01:57When I woke up, I looked like Strawberry Shortcake on crack.
01:59I looked to my left to see a note.
02:01Their page is dying.
02:01We did what we had to do.
02:02XOXO the e-girls.
02:04We can also understand what makes the e-girl tick
02:06through her predecessors in film, TV, and games,
02:10who helped inspire this look, worldview, and attitude.
02:14Aren't you glad you wore that?
02:15I was sexy and bulletproof.
02:17We can even view her as a fresh take on old tropes like the manic pixie dream girl,
02:22weird girl, and outcast, but with unprecedented bodily autonomy,
02:27confidence, and personal empowerment.
02:30Here's our take on the real origins of the e-girl,
02:33and how she represents where our society's values are evolving today.

03:08The e-girl expresses herself primarily through an alternative aesthetic that often includes colored
03:14hair, heavy makeup, and thrifted attire.
03:17So it makes sense that the current version of this subculture rose to popularity on TikTok,
03:22where users tend to be in front of the camera.
03:28We can see differing manifestations of the e-girl in some of today's stars,
03:32from the hypersexual baby doll style of e-girls like Belle Delphine and Bella Porch,
03:37to the grungy cyberpunk aesthetic of Billie Eilish and Grimes.
03:45Despite their variety, though,
03:47e-personalities hold true to the themes of loud style, confidence, and self-determination.
03:53This may seem like a relatively new phenomenon,
03:56but the look and attitude of the e-girl is pulled from much older characters in TV,
04:02anime, and video games.
04:04This is where the magic happens.
04:06It's like how we used to stay up late and work on your hover bike.
04:10Harley Quinn, who originated in the 90s Batman the Animated Series,
04:14stands as a big inspiration thanks to her distinctive style and untamed personality.
04:20Love your perfume? What is that, the scent of death?
04:23She embodies the flamboyancy, alternativeness,
04:27and emancipation that e-girls and boys strive for.
04:30I'm the one they should be scared of.
04:32Not you. Not Mr. J.
04:35Cause I'm Harley.
04:37Quinn!
04:38The characters of Sailor Moon are also big influences,
04:41with their cutesy anime appearances, righteous heroism,
04:44I am Sailor Moon, the champion of justice,
04:48and positive empowering outlook.
04:51Don't underestimate what girls can do.
04:53Channeling anime visuals in general,
04:55the e-girl can have a girlish or baby vibe,
04:58harking back to Disney princesses,
05:00and even video games' ultimate damsel in distress, Princess Peach.
05:05But she also has a punk, witch, or goth vibe countering that innocence.
05:10I know my girlfriend is a witch.
05:15The e-boy, meanwhile, has a similar mood,
05:18but draws more on the skater culture and soft boy androgyny.
05:22Rebecca Jennings writes for Vox to describe this hodgepodge of styles,
05:27e-girls and e-boys are what would happen if you shot a teenager
05:30through the internet and they came out the other side.
05:37An early e-girl in live-action film is Ramona Flowers from 2010's
05:43Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
05:45She's got the cyberpunk-style outfits, love of video games,
05:49and of course, colored hair.
05:51I change my hair every week and a half, dude. Get used to it.
05:53She also embodies the e-girl personality.
05:56She's fickle, impulsive, spontaneous.
05:59She's willfully independent, self-assured,
06:02You can sleep in my bed.
06:04And I reserve the right to change my mind about the sex later.
06:06unapologetic about her sexuality,
06:08I was just a little bit curious.
06:10and self-aware of her more toxic behaviors.
06:13Look, I've dabbled in being a bitch.
06:16It's part of the reason I moved here.
06:18I was really hoping to just leave it all behind me.
06:21Another aspect of the e-girl is that she often embraces
06:25stereotypically male interests.
06:27Whether she's a Twitch gamer, a punk rocker, or an avid anime fanatic,
06:31the e-girl subverts our societal expectations of girl hobbies.
06:36Look, wise guy, I know I'm a racer.
06:38I can feel it in my code.
06:40It's largely because of this that the e-girl label began as a criticism.
06:45Females seeking to enter male-dominated online spaces were belittled as e-girls,
06:50if not subject to more extreme harassment.
06:52I'd give you my skin for some skin if you know what I mean, huh, sexy lady, huh?
06:57I'm really just here to play, like everybody else.
07:00Relatedly, at first the e-girl was characterized as looking for sexual attention.
07:05An early user-generated definition from Urban Dictionary claimed an e-girl was always after the D.
07:12Even now, Know Your Meme calls the e-girl or e-boy an internet flirt.
07:21But while the e-girl style may involve flirtatiousness or owning her sex appeal,
07:26there's often an irony to this performance.
07:29And it's not about appeasing or catering to men.
07:39It's about wearing whatever makes you feel good in your own skin.
07:43It's less about,
07:45my body is ugly, I don't want you to see it.
07:46It's more like, I'm not comfortable wearing this.
07:50I'm comfortable wearing this.
07:52Another key aspect of the e-girl or e-boy identity is, obviously,
07:57that they find an outlet online.
08:00And the way they express themselves on the internet might be very different to their life offline.
08:13As Jennings put it,
08:14the e-girl and e-boy's defining qualities are that they are hot and online.
08:19This is something that gets them criticized.
08:22Quote,
08:22The implication of the label is that they spend too much time being concerned
08:26about their hotness and onlineness.
08:29Hey bunnies!
08:30Thought I'd let you know about the POC,
08:32Paint and Wine movement, mate.
08:34And...
08:36Wine.
08:38Self care.
08:38Finding a voice and community online can be a form of empowerment and self-actualization, though.
08:45As seen in one of TV's most literal manifestations of an e-girl yet,
08:49Kat Hernandez on Euphoria.
08:52Kat had amassed over 53,000 followers.
08:55She'd become extremely popular online.
08:59She's a Gen Z goth with extravagant makeup looks and edgy outfits,
09:03who gives us a window into the e-girl's favorite activity,
09:06existing and thriving online.
09:08The summer before high school, she started writing fan fiction.
09:11By the year's end, she had become one of the most prolific smut writers on Tumblr.
09:17At first, her internet persona is starkly different to how she carries herself in real life.
09:22No one in real life knew that she was famous.
09:24But eventually, the two merge.
09:26There's nothing more powerful than a fat girl who doesn't give a f***.
09:30Kat progresses from a severely insecure person
09:33to one of the most outspoken characters on the show.
09:35It's degrading, it's discriminatory,
09:38and it just goes to show how insidious and systemic body terrorism truly is in this country.
09:45And she finds self-liberation from choosing to stop caring about what people will think.
09:50You look different.
09:53I changed.
09:55Meanwhile, I May Destroy You offers a more mixed message
09:58about whether extreme onlineness is good for us.
10:02Make sure you tell your friends to follow me and make me more powerful.
10:04When protagonist Arabella amasses a big following by speaking out about sexual assault,
10:10at first she finds comfort and solidarity through engagement with her new fans.
10:14But eventually, this becomes an obsessive distraction
10:18monopolizing her attention and changing her personality.
10:21Your blood pressure results, however.
10:24Sorry, one sec.
10:26As you know, you can't give peace unless you have peace.
10:29Back in the room. Sorry.
10:31She needs to unplug in order to focus on real life and actually heal.
10:36The business model of these networks incentivizes us to behave in certain ways,
10:42in ways that promote speaking, often at the cost of listening.
10:51The on-screen outcast, with their quirky fashion sense and alternative worldview,
10:56is a key part of the e-girls' heritage.
10:59Every generation has their own definition of outcasts.
11:03You know what punkers don't do?
11:04Call themselves punkers.
11:06They identify themselves through their taste in clothing, music, and hobbies.
11:10Hey, I believe in God, man.
11:11I've seen him.
11:13I felt his power.
11:14He plays drums for Led Zeppelin and his name is John Bonham, baby!
11:19And for them, style is a statement,
11:21expressing who they are and what they believe about the world.
11:25You know, you really do look a lot better without all that black shit on your eyes.
11:28Hey, I like that black shit.
11:31The e-girl also has a healthy dose of the weird girl specifically,
11:35who prides herself on gothic or alternative style and sees what others miss.
11:40Live people ignore the strange and unusual.
11:44I myself am strange and unusual.
11:48But perhaps most of all, we can interpret the e-girl as a response to the manic pixie dream girl.
11:54This is your comfort zone.
11:58It's this big, Quentin.
12:00All the things that you want in the world are way out there.
12:04This dream woman is adorably quirky, fun, and spontaneous,
12:09but in most stories she's defined by her role of saving a male protagonist's life
12:14by giving him a new perspective.
12:17She never really gets more agency than being a bubbly therapist.
12:21If you can't laugh at yourself, life's gonna seem a whole lot longer than you'd like.
12:24Arguably, the manic pixie dream girl framework of female eccentricity
12:28and free-spirited bravado is reinvented through the e-girl,
12:32a quirky, alternative young person with a unique way of seeing the world,
12:37minus all the savior stuff.
12:39Both the manic pixie dream girl and the e-girl may be subjects of desire,
12:44fitting the lonely emo guy's ideal of the perfect girl.
12:47I think she's the girl of my dreams.
12:49But the e-girl makes herself the center of the story,
12:52and finds independence in her otherness.
12:55While men often come out better or fixed after meeting a manic pixie,
13:00with e-girls they might remain stagnant or just plain shaken up.
13:04You're so smart. I feel that.
13:07Shouldn't you be on the boy side?
13:11Back in 2010,
13:12Ramona Flowers already exposed this tension between the two figures
13:16by being both a realistic depiction of an e-girl,
13:19I heard she kicks all kinds of ass.
13:22She's on another level.
13:24She has men dying at her feet.
13:26and a manic pixie dream girl-like projection of Scott's fantasies.
13:30I just woke up and you were in my dream.
13:32I dreamt that you were delivering me this package.
13:34Is that weird?
13:35While Scott may see Ramona as a kind of savior or prize,
13:39I just sort of feel like I'm on drugs when I'm with you.
13:42their relationship can only really move forward after he largely overcomes
13:46this reductive view and accepts Ramona for the complicated,
13:50flawed individual she is.
13:52Someone who has her own stuff to deal with and isn't there to solve his.
13:56I know you play mysterious and aloof just to avoid getting hurt,
13:59and I know you have reasons for not wanting to talk about your past.
14:03The e-girl is fundamentally interested in exploring herself and her passions,
14:07and harnessing her confidence.
14:09So as much as the e-girl can be regarded as a love child of these various past archetypes,
14:15she also offers us a new narrative,
14:17where her story arc revolves around self-empowerment.
14:21I know I look good, and you should know that you look good.
14:30I've just been so inspired by e-girls.
14:34The e-girl and e-boy is also associated with certain Gen Z values,
14:39like inclusivity and the reevaluation of gender norms.
14:43I would never condone, endorse, or support any type of discrimination.
14:48E-girls and e-boys break down boundaries between what's considered masculine or feminine,
14:53as these identities don't correspond with the female or male gender,
14:57just with fitting their respective styles.
15:00All e-boys or most e-boys have a middle part,
15:02they'll paint their nails and wear fancy chains.
15:05Encouraging people of all gender identities to wear the makeup and clothes they want,
15:09even though these styles have traditionally been seen as feminine,
15:12is the essence of the e-girl counterculture.
15:15The e-girl or e-boy also represents the determination to seek confidence with your
15:21own body on your own terms.
15:23Me and my body's relationship has been the most toxic relationship you could even imagine.
15:29The way that I dress has made that relationship so much better.
15:33And to learn to love yourself, even when others are judging you.
15:37I do not dress to impress you.
15:39I dress to impress middle school me who didn't think I could look this good.
15:43In the film and TV world today, we can find a number of film and TV characters who embody
15:49the e-girl attitude of rebellion, alternative style, and self-determination,
15:54even if not all are particularly online.
15:58Tough, edgy, pink-haired Maeve Wiley from Sex Education doesn't care what anyone thinks,
16:03but she does care about defending and spreading her feminist values.
16:07And you should be careful.
16:08Perpetuating old-fashioned, patriarchal ideology.
16:11Promising young woman's Cassie adopts an over-the-top e-girl look
16:16as a disguise to distract men, playing on how this look may appeal to the male gaze,
16:21but actually has its own empowered motives.
16:24I act like I'm too drunk to stand.
16:27A nice guy like you comes over to see if I'm okay.
16:31This character, who embraces a candy-colored palette more subtly in her regular life,
16:36devotes herself to confronting male predators,
16:39What are you trying to say, that I'm like a predator or something?
16:41I don't know.
16:43Are you?
16:44And fighting for justice.
16:46In this way, we might see the e-girl as a rejection of the self-serving,
16:50succeeding-for-one-self feminism of the girl boss.
16:53If I wanted a boyfriend and a yoga class and a house and kids and a job my mom could brag about,
16:58I'd have done it. It would take me ten minutes. I don't want it.
17:01The e-girl is about standing up against what's wrong, even if this has a cost.
17:06This figure's loud and proud aesthetic is a testament to a new, open-minded generation.
17:12Looking ahead, more dynamic representation of the e-girl's liberating confidence on screen
17:18are likely to inspire more of this attitude in real life.
17:21This outcast for a new, inclusive era reminds us that true liberty and acceptance come only when
17:32you're finally comfortable with who you are.
17:34A fresh start. A chance to be my own woman.
