00:00He'll come for me.
00:03He's tried before, many times with many three-eyed ravens."
00:07The second episode of Season 8 gave us a crucial scene
00:10that finally explained what the entire Game of Thrones fandom
00:13has been wondering about for years now,
00:15what the Night King is after, and on a deeper level,
00:18what his quest represents.
00:20He wants to erase this world, and I am its memory.
00:29The endless night that the Night King aims to bring to Westeros
00:32is translated for us by Bran and Samwell Tarly
00:35as the destruction of all living memory.
00:38That's what death is, isn't it?
00:40Forgetting.
00:41This scene pretty much dismisses the widespread fan theory
00:44that Bran is the Night King,
00:46but it also explains why that theory was so persuasive to some.
00:51There's a deep link between Bran and the Night King.
00:53His mark is on me.
00:55He always knows where I am.
00:56The two are mirrors of one another.
00:59One is memory, and the other is forgetting.
01:02So let's linger on this for a moment and unpack what it really means.
01:06If the Night King's forgetting equates with death,
01:09then the series is saying memory is life.
01:12I can see everything, everything that's ever happened to everyone.
01:17In fact, memory is a good definition of what separates the army of the dead
01:21from the army defending Winterfell.
01:23The Night King's wights are reanimated corpses
01:25who have the basic hallmarks of life,
01:27they can move and pose a very grave threat to the living,
01:31but they have no knowledge of who they are or what they've seen.
01:33If we forget where we've been and what we've done,
01:36we're not men anymore, just animals.
01:40Through this theme, the series is getting somewhat meta,
01:43as we are all engaged in watching and exercise in preserving humankind's memory.
01:48This story is loosely inspired by medieval history,
01:51as well as classics of literature and fantasy.
01:54Most fundamentally, it's trying to pass down to us
01:56the deeper lessons history has taught us about power, love, survival,
02:01and the bigger picture.
02:02But before you leave, you must learn.
02:08Learn what?
02:09Everything.
02:11This sentimental gathering on the eve of the battle against death itself
02:15reminds us that, if we don't preserve this shared, better self,
02:18we don't just lose life, we've lost what makes life valuable.
02:23So in this crucial scene revealing Bran's ultimate importance,
02:26the show subtly announces its own ambition
02:29to bring us closer to that precious font of memory,
02:32because stories that contain the truth
02:34are the key to making us alive in a real sense.
02:37Your memories don't come from books.
02:40Your stories aren't just stories.
02:42If I wanted to erase the world of men, I'd start with you.
02:45In light of this message, it makes sense that the rest of this episode
02:48is about ghosts and the memories and truths these ghosts carry with them.
02:52Near the end, we get a melancholy song from Brienne's Squire Podrick.
02:56And she never wanted to leave, never wanted to leave.
03:07And it feels like the lyrics are speaking about passionately wanting to live,
03:12not wanting to leave this life, which is here deeply intertwined with wanting to remember.
03:18I remember the first time we were here, the first time I saw this hole.
03:23The first line of this song, Jenny of Old Stones, comes from the books,
03:26while the rest was written for the show.
03:28The lyrics tell of a young woman dancing with ghosts.
03:31Jenny would dance with her ghosts.
03:35And as the army of the dead gets ready to strike,
03:38it's as if all of our characters' ghosts are present at Winterfell,
03:42symbolically in formation ready to pounce on the living.
03:45The episode ends with Jon telling Daenerys the secret he's dreaded bringing to light.
03:51My real name is Aegon Targaryen.
03:57And just like his conversation with Samwell,
04:00again this painful moment of truth happens in a crypt.
04:03So it's as if the truth itself comes from our ghosts below ground.
04:07Though it remained buried a long time, it's still there ready to rise again.
04:12The way that each character reacts to truth in this episode is symbolic.
04:16Daenerys responds to Jon's information with anger.
04:19It's impossible.
04:20We see this Targaryen rage coming out of her more and more
04:23when she doesn't get her way.
04:25If you can't help me take it back, I'll find another hand who can.
04:28And here we might notice that Jon lies to protect Sam from Dany's wrath.
04:32Who told you this?
04:35Bronn.
04:36He saw it.
04:38He saw it?
04:39And Samwell confirmed it.
04:41So even this incredibly trusting man who loves her
04:44fears that she will rush to fury before fair judgment.
04:48Dany's first response is, predictably, skepticism.
04:50A secret no one in the world knew, except your brother and your best friend.
04:57But Jon isn't interested in wasting time on denial.
04:59It's true, Dany.
05:01I know it is.
05:03And this look he gives her before they're interrupted betrays a disappointment
05:06that her first instinct is a selfish and defensive concern for her claim.
05:10You'd have a claim to the Iron Throne.
05:12If the incestuous implications aren't the main issue here,
05:15then she's also not being logical.
05:18If they got married, two claims are better than one.
05:21A proposal is what I'm proposing.
05:23So the fact that she assumes there's a need to compete and wants to be the sole primary
05:28ruler underlines a key difference between the two as leaders.
05:32In the next week's scenes, we hear Sansa say,
05:34The most heroic thing we can do now is look the truth in the face.
05:39True to form, the unfailingly decent and dutiful Jon faces the truth with a reluctant,
05:44mournful acceptance.
05:46But Dany has become so attached to a particular narrative of herself,
05:54that she's resisting any evidence that contradicts her narrative.
05:57And this impulse to strong-arm the facts is the hallmark of rulers who abuse their power.
06:03Someday you'll sit on the throne and the truth will be what you make it.
06:06Meanwhile, Tyrion, despite his recent faltering,
06:10reminds us again why he's the smartest of our central characters.
06:13You're here because of your mind.
06:15As he enthusiastically steps up to welcome the truth with open arms.
06:19You've had a strange journey.
06:21Stranger than most.
06:22I'd like to hear about it.
06:24This moment epitomizes Tyrion's devotion to making knowledge his best friend,
06:28to attempt to know the full story.
06:30It's a long story.
06:32If only we were trapped in a castle, in the middle of winter with nowhere to go.
06:38And we can only wonder what useful insights he may have gleaned from this off-screen conversation.
06:43Meanwhile, we see Jaime forced to face his truth publicly,
06:46as he's put on trial by a collection of his former enemies for his many past sins.
06:51When I was a child, my brother would tell me a bedtime story about the man who murdered our father.
06:59Jaime's more recent good deeds save him from death.
07:02You vouch for him.
07:04I do.
07:05You would fight beside him.
07:07I would.
07:08Yet crucially, Jaime stands behind his so-called sins because he did them for the right reasons.
07:14Everything I did, I did for my house and my family.
07:17I'd do it all again.
07:18Thus, the Raven's line to Jaime,
07:20The things we do for love.
07:21is not just a veiled nod to Jaime's attack on Bran,
07:24The things I do for love.
07:26But also an unironic statement.
07:29Jaime really did do it all for love.
07:32And that's why, even in his haughtiest early days, he was so likable.
07:36No matter what you do, you're forsaking one power or another.
07:39He did terrible things honestly, not letting himself off with self-deception like other characters do.
07:45What were you thinking?
07:46I was thinking of us.
07:47You're a bit late to start complaining about it now.
07:49As Tyrion says of Jaime's love for Cersei,
07:51She never fooled you.
07:53You always knew exactly what she was.
07:56We loved her anyway.
07:58In this scene, Bran chooses not to share Jaime's greatest sin of all with the group.
08:03Why didn't you tell them?
08:04So while we're seeing this moral that one must face the truth,
08:08at the same time the Three-Eyed Raven demonstrates a complimentary wisdom.
08:12If you are far smarter than the limited minds around you,
08:15there's a value to being selective about the truths you reveal.
08:18As a superior intellect understands how pieces of the truth influence human behavior.
08:23You won't be able to help us in this fight if I let them murder you first.
08:27On the theme of ghosts, this episode also returns to three different unresolved loves
08:32who have been haunting one another.
08:34The reunited Arya and Gendry finally act on their feelings.
08:37We're probably going to die soon.
08:41I ought to know what it's like before that happens.
08:45In their time apart, both have solidified their identities as fighters.
08:49Are you going to be down in the crypt?
08:50No, but-
08:51But you're a fighter.
08:52Now they try to put on a brave face for this battle.
08:55He's got many faces.
08:56I look forward to seeing this one.
08:58But after their love scene, we even see Arya's fearless mask drop for just a moment,
09:04as she contemplates the war against death itself.
09:07Sansa and Theon reunite at the place they once escaped together,
09:11and the intensity of feeling between them sends an interesting message about
09:16how living through terrible things can bring people together.
09:19Your name is Theon Greyjoy.
09:24Last surviving son of Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands.
09:27Do you hear me?
09:28Despite what Theon did to the Starks,
09:31his brave sacrifice in rebelling against his terrifying abuser gave Sansa life.
09:35I'll know them away.
09:36No, I won't make you without you.
09:39These two ultimate victims are the only ones who understand the trauma each other endured.
09:44It can't be any worse.
09:45It can.
09:46It can always be worse.
09:49And they've come through that experience with a stronger-than-ever sense of self and purpose.
09:54If Sansa is in love with Theon, and if Arya were to get pregnant by Gendry,
09:58this would be an interesting reversal of where we expected each Stark girl to end up.
10:03Sansa wanted to be a traditional lady who mothered lords.
10:05I love him, and I'm meant to be his queen and have his babies.
10:09Seven hells.
10:10But Theon can't father any children thanks to,
10:12I'm not killing you.
10:15Just making a few alterations.
10:18Arya once dismissed the idea of motherhood.
10:20That's not me.
10:21Yet she's become so confident in her own skin that we saw her take control
10:25of her first sexual experience with the daring that defines her.
10:29I'm not the red woman.
10:31Take your own bloody pants off.
10:33And we can imagine her taking on parenthood with the same sense of agency
10:37and lack of concern of doing it the usual way.
10:39Meanwhile, if Gendry and Arya's night together does produce a Baratheon Stark heir,
10:44that could ultimately complicate lines of succession for the Iron Throne.
10:48But that's a major if, relying on certain people not surviving,
10:52and Arya avoiding the tragic fate of the aunt she so reminds people of,
10:57Lyanna Stark.
10:58The greatest love story of this episode is that of Jaime and Brienne,
11:02and their romance with knighthood itself.
11:04Arise, Brienne of Tarth.
11:08A knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
11:10We have a whole video coming up about Brienne,
11:13so we'll be digging more into this there.
11:15How do you know there is an afterwards?
11:17A knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
11:23Hi guys, it's Susannah.
