00:00When you're a teenager, every emotion is dialed up to 100.
00:03Peer pressure and societal expectations trap you in a box,
00:07and you're treated like a child, yet expected to act like an adult.
00:10You're supposed to have your entire life figured out by the time you turn 18 and
00:17Yeah, you get it. Teenagers have it rough.
00:19We've all been there, or we're currently there.
00:22Life feels forever and big,
00:24and no one else could possibly understand what you're going through.
00:27You're 16. You're not supposed to know the answers to anything.
00:33Fortunately, the teens aren't entirely alone.
00:35Enter teen movies, especially teen movies geared toward teenage girls,
00:40capturing so many of the issues and emotions that teen girls find themselves experiencing,
00:45including romance, comedy, angst, friendship, awkwardness, anxiety,
00:50and desperately wanting life to be a little less complicated,
00:53preferably with a happy ending.
00:55Many of these movies tend to fall into three categories, or eras,
00:59of the teen movie genre.
01:00We've dubbed them Rom-Com Supremacy, The Eternal Icons,
01:04and My Friends and I Against the World.
01:06Here's our take on movies every teen girl should watch,
01:09and what makes each era so near and dear to our hearts.
01:12Of course, we have to start with the sometimes cheesy,
01:15but totally quintessential teen movies that so many of us grew up watching
01:20from the 90s and 2000s.
01:25This era was big on making teen-focused adaptations of iconic stories,
01:30from Jane Austen novels, to Shakespeare plays, to Cinderella and beyond.
01:34These decades were full of stories of young women starting to embrace their femininity,
01:39and their independence, strength, and intelligence,
01:42along with some pretty iconic soundtracks and hilarious quotes.
01:45She doesn't even go here!
01:48Welcome to Rom-Com Supremacy.
01:50When we hear the words teen movie, most people's minds immediately go to mean girls,
01:54and for good reason.
01:55We follow new girl Katie Herron as she's dropped into the complicated and strict
01:59social game called high school.
02:01So you've actually never been to a real school before?
02:05Shut up. Shut up!
02:09We witness Katie navigating social circles and figuring out where she fits in.
02:13She makes a lot of mistakes along the way,
02:15losing herself and pushing away her most genuine friends.
02:18You know I couldn't invite you. I had to pretend to be plastic.
02:21Buddy, you're not pretending anymore. You're plastic.
02:25Cold, shiny, hard plastic.
02:27In her desperation to feel included and acknowledged,
02:30she's ensnared by Queen Bee Regina George's power,
02:34and leans into her own mean girl powers in an attempt to usurp her.
02:38Power is intoxicating no matter what age you are,
02:40and when you're a teenager who figures out how to play the social game
02:44sooner than others, you can suddenly manipulate those around you
02:48to further your own interests.
02:50Mom, can you pick me up? I'm scared.
02:52In the end though, after some pretty impactful events,
02:55including Regina George getting hit by a bus.
02:57And that's how Regina George died.
03:00No, I'm totally kidding. But she did get hurt.
03:03Our beloved characters can fall into social statuses
03:06that are better suited to their personalities,
03:08and what they truly need in life.
03:10Underneath the hilarious and often exaggerated moments of mean girls
03:14lie so many deeply relatable moments that still resonate with teens today.
03:18So are we still in a fight?
03:21Are you still an asshole?
03:23I don't think so.
03:24Well, then I guess we're okay.
03:26Another popular and must-see teen movie is Clueless.
03:30The film follows iconic Cher Horowitz,
03:32who starts as a popular girly girl obsessed with fashion and relationships.
03:36I'd like to see you have a little bit of direction.
03:38I have direction.
03:40Yeah, towards the mall.
03:42By the time the credits roll, she is still a very feminine girl with feminine hobbies,
03:46but she has become more self-aware, mature, and ambitious.
03:50I decided I needed a complete makeover,
03:53except this time I make over my soul.
03:56Girls in teen movies can often be sorted into two categories,
03:59the odd one out who learns to be more sexy and feminine,
04:02and the popular girl who is already sexy but usually mean.
04:06But Clueless proves that you can be feminine and strong,
04:10hot and ambitious.
04:11Clueless provides Cher, a teenage girl, with the opportunity to grow,
04:15learn, and make mistakes without losing her defining characteristics.
04:18Cher, what are you doing?
04:21I'm captain of the Pismo Beach disaster relief.
04:24I don't think they need your skis.
04:25Daddy, some people lost all their belongings.
04:28Cher showed teenage girls' femininity itself wasn't the problem,
04:32and that you don't have to give up that part of yourself to be who you want.
04:36And of course we can't go any further without mentioning the iconic
04:3910 things I hate about you.
04:41What did I miss?
04:43The oppressive patriarchal values that dictate our education.
04:47Good.
04:47Teen movies don't always have to include some life-changing moment
04:50that flips a character's personality on its head.
04:53In this movie, each of the characters are still themselves by the end,
04:57but they've become more three-dimensional and human.
05:00We learn more about what motivates their actions,
05:02and they step out of the boxes we, the audience, have put them in.
05:05There's Cat Stratford, the tough and opinionated feminist,
05:08who is mean, badass, and doesn't care what people think.
05:11The only thing people know about me is that I'm scary.
05:13But really, she is adhering to what people expect of her,
05:16hiding behind her tough exterior to avoid confronting
05:20her trauma and vulnerability.
05:22But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you.
05:24Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
05:28Her sister Bianca appears to be a stereotypical and naive popular girl,
05:32but she can be just as independent and smart as her sister.
05:35That's for making my day bleed! That's for my sister!
05:40And that's for me!
05:42Her father and sister's overprotectiveness only pushes her
05:45to take control of her own life and actions.
05:47It's not like I'm stupid enough to repeat your mistakes.
05:51I guess I thought I was protecting you.
05:53By not letting me experience anything for myself?
05:56Patrick Verona, the bad boy with a heart of gold,
05:58is just like Cat, hiding his own sensitive side
06:01behind a cocky persona.
06:03Finally, there's Cameron James.
06:04Sure, he falls in love with Bianca immediately before he even meets her,
06:09but he isn't afraid to stand up for himself and call Bianca out.
06:12You know, just because you're beautiful,
06:14that doesn't mean that you can treat people like they don't matter.

07:41Uncommon Goods. We're all out of the ordinary.
07:43Now let's rewind the clock back to the spark of the teen movie boom for a moment.
07:48The 80s saw an explosion of media directed at teens that actually felt real and relatable.
07:53Not set on telling teens how they should be,
07:56but instead digging into how complicated life actually is at that age.
08:00From John Hughes' Brat Pack movies and beyond,
08:03these films have managed to stand the test of time
08:05and continue to resonate even many decades later.
08:08God, are we going to be like our parents?
08:12Not me.
08:12But what makes these movies relevant today?
08:15We won't be the first to admit that the 80s were a different time.
08:20What's happening, hot stuff?
08:22But being a teenager, that remains very much the same.
08:26A classic, and arguably one of the best coming-of-age films of all time,
08:29is none other than The Breakfast Club.
08:31This 1985 movie focuses on a group of teenagers stuck in detention
08:35that, at first glance, couldn't possibly have anything in common.
08:38Don't you ever,
08:40ever compare yourself to me, okay?
08:43We're given the five stereotypes that hold up in fiction.
08:45The jock, the bad boy, the popular queen, the weird loner, and the nerd.
08:49The more time they spend with each other, though, the more they,
08:52and we, realize how much they have in common.
08:54We were all pretty bizarre.
08:57Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all.
08:59Society, parents, and the friends you find yourselves with
09:02very often force you into boxes, restricting any change or growth,
09:06no matter how much you wish for it.
09:07Of course, you could break free from the box, but at what cost?
09:11What if your friends judge and abandon you,
09:13leaving you more alone than you'd already felt?
09:15I hate it. I hate having to go along with everything my friends say.
09:19Then why do you do it?
09:22I don't know. I don't...
09:26You don't understand.
09:27This coming-of-age film truly captures the pressure teenagers endure from all sides,
09:32and it shows how, despite how alone they may feel,
09:34the people sitting right next to them are probably going through the same thing.
09:38You're laughing at me.
09:39No!
09:41Yeah, you are.
09:43Now, if you're not in the mood for cliches or the relentless optimism of some teen movies,
09:481989's Heathers succeeds in taking a much more cynical, satirical,
09:53and dark approach to portraying the chaos and difficulties of adolescence.
09:57I just killed my best friend.
09:59And your worst enemy.
10:00Same difference.
10:02Because let's face it, being a teenager can be messy,
10:06and certainly dramatic, with plenty of dark humor.
10:09The film shows how society tends to glamorize the worst of high school,
10:13particularly school violence and poor mental health.
10:15The protagonist, Veronica Sawyer, has solid morals that often get overshadowed
10:20by her initial desire for popularity,
10:22then her cynicism and toxic relationship with the sociopathic Jason J.D. Dean.
10:28Well, you're not a rebel. You're f***ing psychotic.
10:31She despises the Three Heathers' unkindness towards others,
10:34as well as how her town and the people in it use horrible events to their selfish advantage.
10:39Veronica seeks to dismantle the oppressive hierarchy of high school,
10:43but ends up getting caught in a web of violence that only makes things much, much worse.
10:48Dear diary, my teen angst bulls*** has a body count.
10:53Heathers takes a dark turn away from the optimism of John Hughes' films,
10:57and instead exemplifies the unfortunate, unfiltered cruelty
11:02and looming figure of death that surrounds teenagers.
11:05Despite the dark themes, Heathers has plenty of hilarious moments.
11:08All we want is to be treated like human beings,
11:11not to be experimented on like guinea pigs or patronized like bunny rabbits.
11:16I don't patronize bunny rabbits.
11:18And ultimately never makes sincere kindness into a joke,
11:21and Veronica choosing it in the end proves to be the most victorious action.
11:25There are plenty more eternal icons that every teen girl should watch,
11:29including Dirty Dancing, the perfect movie for a slumber party,
11:40and Ferris Bueller's Day Off,
11:41a fun flick to watch with your partner or even your parents.
11:44Life moves pretty fast.
11:46You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
11:50Many of the more recent teen movies, while still often including themes of romance,
11:54tend to focus on the strong and vibrant friendships people make as teenagers.
11:58Our friends are really who help get us through the awkward and stressful years
12:02that make up our adolescence.
12:04It's really just the hair.
12:06It's not that bad, you can just grow it out.
12:09Are you even up there?
12:112023's Bottoms follows two unpopular high schoolers
12:15who start a fight club to meet girls and lose their virginity.
12:18We're punching each other. Adrenaline is flowing.
12:21Next thing you know, Isabelle and Brittany are kissing us on the mouths!
12:24Probably not the most relatable scenario for all teens,
12:27but Bottoms takes a satirical and hilarious,
12:30and sometimes pretty violent, approach to portraying the stereotypes
12:34and dynamics of high school, making us laugh and relate
12:37to what a strange time high school was.
12:46Everything about the movie is hyperbolic, from the high school staff…
12:49Why don't you just ask one of the female teachers?
12:51Thought about that, but we hate them.
12:53Makes sense.
12:54Yeah.
12:54…to that final football game.
12:56Despite everything being exaggerated or turned into a joke,
12:59there are still some more realistic moments that teens can relate to,
13:02like the larger-than-life posters hyping up the jocks,
13:05letting a crush drive your everyday life…
13:08Okay, well, I'm gonna talk to Brittany.
13:10I think that it's time.
13:11Oh, really? It's time?
13:12There wasn't time in the last 11 years we've all been going to school together?
13:16…and making some pretty questionable decisions and mistakes
13:19that, in the end, teach you a lot.
13:21Booksmart is another film that follows two hilarious, unpopular best friends
13:25who realize they may have wasted their high school years.
13:29We didn't party because we wanted to focus on school
13:32and get into good colleges, and it worked.
13:34But the irresponsible people who partied also got into those colleges.
13:38They did both.
13:39If they can make it to one party,
13:41they can graduate having made the most of high school.
13:43Not only are the two main characters very funny with an excellent dynamic
13:47He definitely doesn't want me because I'm a butter personality.
13:52How dare you say that about my best friend?
13:55But each of the supporting characters offers something endearing,
13:58entertaining, and unique to the creative plot.
14:00Booksmart shows how important it is to make fun and friends one of your priorities,
14:05and how both are integral to your success.
14:08And let's be honest, sanity.
14:09I just can't imagine my life without you.
14:12This era also embraces the reality of being an unbearably awkward teen,
14:17because it is an awkward time.
14:19Teens find themselves suddenly facing a roller coaster of hormones,
14:22and the strange liminal space between childhood and adulthood.
14:26In our opinion, few movies capture that awkwardness better than 2018's Eighth Grade.
14:31Most quiet, Andrew Fields and Kayla Day.
14:39Fair warning, this movie can be a little too relatable sometimes,
14:42especially for those who struggle to make friends and put themselves out there.
14:46Maybe you just need to put yourself out there a little bit.
14:49Please stop.
14:49Director Bo Burnham perfectly captures the awkwardness of growing up,
14:53and not quite fitting in with your peers.
14:56But our protagonist, Kayla, proves that her social awkwardness doesn't hinder her creativity,
15:01or courage.
15:02Unlike many people, Kayla forces herself to step out of her comfort zone,
15:06and stand up for herself, no matter how excruciating it can be.
15:09You know, I used to be, like, really quiet, too.
15:16Our hearts warm with pride when we watch her make the best of any situation,
15:21but we still hope things get easier, and hopefully less awkward for her in high school.
15:25You know, you never know what's gonna, like, happen next,
15:29and that's what makes things exciting and scary.
15:32Teen movies are often regarded as cheesy and cliche,
15:35and to be fair, a lot of them are.
15:37But for some of them, that's what makes them so beloved.
15:40Teens appreciate having a happy ending for people just like them.
15:43They appreciate being represented on screen when they feel like no one really gets them.
15:48And the thing is, is I really don't care what people think about me,
15:51because I believe in myself, and I know that things are gonna be okay.
15:55And importantly, many creators of teen movies aren't afraid to be transparent
15:59about the dark side of adolescence, because it isn't always happy endings.
16:03Veronica, you look like hell.
16:07Yeah, I just got back.
16:09Teen movies are a timeless genre, because adolescence will always be a complicated and
16:15interesting time for every generation.
16:17Fortunately, we can count on movies to be there for us, and to understand us,
16:21even if it feels like maybe no one else does.
16:23There are so, so many iconic teen movies that we didn't have time to mention in this video.
16:28If we missed your favorite, let us know what it is in the comments,
16:31so that we can make sure to include it in part two.
16:35That's the take.
