00:00Five, six, seven, eight!
00:03School. Love it or loathe it?
00:06Dad, you cannot be talking in my class.
00:08Yeah, I prefer the work than being in school, really.
00:11We all have to do it.
00:12So we've actually learnt nothing?
00:14Minus one times minus one.
00:17I feel like I've always loved, like, dressing up.
00:21At Carragalline Community School,
00:23home from home for 1,100 Cork teenagers,
00:26it's a time of change and rebellion.
00:30I love my phone. My phone is my baby.
00:36If there's one thing I would ban in schools,
00:38it would be mobile phones.
00:39Over the course of a year,
00:41we have captured the life,
00:43the laughs,
00:45the lessons.
00:47You have an awful lot to give, girl,
00:49and I hope you realise that.
00:50And the classroom clashes.
00:52Do you speak to people like that in real life?
00:53Like what?
00:54Inside the school gates.
00:56It's teenage life.
00:58You can't give up on them.
00:59You can't give up on them.
01:00This is a rebel education.
01:10Leaving cert student Luke's time in school
01:12has always been a challenge.
01:14I just had no interest because I couldn't,
01:16I thought I couldn't do it.
01:17But beginning medication for a late diagnosis of ADHD
01:22gave him the lifeline he needed.
01:24It brought the confidence back up as well,
01:26knowing that I actually can get it done.
01:28Away from the books,
01:29Luke's musical talent has inspired him
01:31to form a teacher-student supergroup.
01:34When do you want,
01:35do you want me here now,
01:36or at the end?
01:39But the music also has a more serious side.
01:42Today,
01:43Luke will get his Leaving Cert underway
01:45with his music practical.
01:46Right.
01:47Before we start,
01:48exactly.
01:49This is the last note.
01:50Usually I would,
01:51usually I would.
01:52But I wasn't able,
01:53I'm not able to get it, so.
01:55And that's fine.
01:56And if that happens inside,
01:57that's great.
01:58Much longer,
01:59even better again.
02:00The Leaving Cert is extremely stressful for students.
02:02You know,
02:03it's the most stressing thing they probably do
02:05in their lives.
02:07Think back to when you were 12,
02:08and you walked into the school here.
02:10Okay?
02:11Think about the musician you were.
02:12And now think of the musician you are today.
02:14Is there a difference?
02:15Oh, 100%.
02:16Yeah.
02:17That's what you're going to show the examiner today.
02:18You're showing the journey you went on.
02:21And this isn't about perfection.
02:23This is about giving a musical performance
02:25and showing the musician you've become
02:27while you've been here in school.
02:29Are you ready to go?
02:30Yeah, I suppose.
02:31Perfect.
02:32Let's go.
02:33There's 50% of his overall results riding on this,
02:36so no pressure.
02:53And after what feels like
02:54the longest six minutes of his life,
02:56he's done.
02:59I'm delighted with it anyway.
03:02I played my guitar pieces probably the best.
03:05I've played them in a while.
03:06And hit all my bends and everything pretty spot on.
03:09I'm happy with it,
03:10so I can kind of leave that now
03:11and move on to the next thing.
03:12Time to decompress with fellow super grouper, Deren.
03:17What's the right lyric?
03:18What are you waiting for?
03:20Go again, go again.
03:21How are you feeling for the rest of the leaving search?
03:24Yeah.
03:25Maybe fine.
03:26I don't like to worry myself about it
03:28because it's unnecessary.
03:29Yeah.
03:30So leaving search,
03:31you can control the outcome pretty much
03:32if you're just lock in and study,
03:33so that's what I'm trying to do.
03:34Yeah.
03:35But it's almost impossible, so...
03:36Yeah, no worries.
03:37Are you finding it hard to study?
03:39Oh, it's gross.
03:40Yeah.
03:41Some days are so, so good
03:42and then some days are absolutely terrible.
03:43Yeah.
03:44There is pressure
03:45to be able to do something
03:46that he finds very difficult to do.
03:48Every day, every hour.
03:50It's just repeat, repeat.
03:52Try to do something
03:54that every bit of him doesn't want to do.
03:57What's your favourite type of yawn?
04:04I hate the big arrogant one.
04:07It's when one yawns on the left
04:09and next you can see the yawn.
04:11It's like a Mexican wave, like...
04:12It seems a Mexican yawn, like...
04:14Johnny!
04:16Alan!
04:17Alan!
04:18Alan!
04:19Will I leave you off here, Soph?
04:23Yeah.
04:24Your bag is in the boot and stuff.
04:25Yeah, I'll get that.
04:26Everyone in Carragalline
04:28knows third year student, Diarmuid.
04:31How are they?
04:32I'm good at one, buddy.
04:33I'm a good boy.
04:34Diarmuid's a massive character
04:35around this school.
04:36I mean, he's sport-obsessed.
04:38What do you think the score will be?
04:403-1 Spurs.
04:413-1 Spurs.
04:42Diarmuid loves Spurs.
04:44For me, I don't think
04:45he could've picked a worse team,
04:47but that's my own personal thing.
04:48Lexi.
04:49Oh, yeah, Diarmu.
04:50So, I'm one of the Cork Spurs.
04:53That's good, isn't it?
04:54Yeah.
04:55I might go to the pub with them, you know?
04:57Really?
04:58I play sport.
04:59I watch it and it's my kind.
05:03Diarmuid has ASD,
05:05and ASD is Autism Spectrum Disorder.
05:08A lot of it is very sensory-based,
05:10so how things smell,
05:12how things feel,
05:14the noises,
05:16those all take a very big toll on Diarmuid.
05:18Hey, boys!
05:19But for the most part,
05:20Diarmuid is really holding his own now at school.
05:22What's up, lads?
05:24You all right?
05:25That's good, boys.
05:26Diarmuid will sit down on a Saturday,
05:29he will watch Match the Day,
05:31and he will analyse all the results,
05:33so that then when he is talking to people,
05:36I think he's learned through sports
05:38how to strike up a conversation with people.
05:40I tell you now, Holly,
05:41it'll be top class fun,
05:42I tell you now.
05:43Yeah.
05:44I mean, Diarmuid's excelling in the school.
05:45I mean, he's doing his junior cert.
05:47Diarmuid's the same as everybody else.
05:49Diarmuid, consistent.
05:50He's a student of the school.
05:52Yeah, junior cert is going to be
05:54a massive achievement for me.
05:56He really wants to be a good student.
05:58He really wants to show
05:59that he knows the information.
06:01All right.
06:02Come on.
06:03We'll go through the answers there,
06:04if we take out a different colour pen.
06:05He definitely knows his stuff,
06:06and he's not afraid to talk to teachers
06:09or talk to anyone.
06:10He's just very straightforward.
06:12Owen, I'd say,
06:13Postacoglu might go
06:15Vicario, Paro, Romero,
06:17Van de Ven, Udagi,
06:19Basuma, Madison.
06:26Do you know of people
06:30who have been cyberbullied?
06:31I think so, yeah.
06:32Cyberbullying has become
06:34one of the biggest issues
06:35facing teenagers today.
06:37It just causes such anxiety.
06:40And the Leaving Cert students
06:42want to create a safety net
06:43for the younger students
06:44coming after them.
06:45Bullying happens.
06:47If you get bullied,
06:48here's how to deal with it.
06:49Are we missing that completely?
06:51I feel like there's a big difference
06:53because bullying has changed
06:54over the last few years.
06:55It's always like the adults
06:57and what we're being taught about
06:58in class is always like
06:59five to ten years behind.
07:00Like, the approach is always
07:02how to prevent bullying.
07:03It's always going to happen,
07:04so I think a better approach
07:06is how do we give a safe space
07:08to help students come forward.
07:10Running with that idea
07:12of creating a safe space
07:13in an online world...
07:14Morning, folks.
07:16The school has invited in
07:17family psychotherapist
07:19and author Richard Hogan.
07:21Isn't it much easier
07:23to say something
07:24about someone
07:25behind your screen,
07:27isn't it?
07:28People find it easier
07:29to bully people online
07:31because it's not in real life.
07:32People kind of feel like,
07:33oh, they won't actually get hurt
07:34or nothing bad
07:35will actually happen to me.
07:36Online bullying is just like,
07:38you're too scared to say it
07:39to their face.
07:40Like, they think they're
07:41a big person over the phone
07:42and they get shy and scared
07:44or, like, in person, like.
07:46So they don't have to deal
07:47with consequences
07:48in real life.
07:49I think your child, you know,
07:51would never do that.
07:52They can, and they do.
07:55This is the real problem
07:56with cyberbullying
07:57is that it's in the pocket,
07:58it's up in your bedroom,
07:59but now you're there
08:00and your phone is buzzing
08:01and, you know,
08:02people are, you know,
08:03saying things about you.
08:04It might have gone viral
08:05amongst the school community there.
08:06So that stuff
08:07is particularly insidious
08:08and problematic
08:09for, you know,
08:10a young person
08:11whose whole life
08:12at that age
08:13is about being connected
08:14and about being accepted.
08:15You know,
08:16you put up an image,
08:17let's say,
08:18on TikTok
08:19or whatever it is,
08:20Instagram,
08:21and everyone goes,
08:22gorgeous hun,
08:23stunning babe,
08:24I love the lashes hun,
08:25XXOO,
08:26oh my god babe,
08:27you're so stunning, right?
08:29And then someone says,
08:31your eyelashes are gappy.
08:32Why does a comment hurt,
08:34do you think?
08:35Like, if you're already
08:36insecure about it
08:37in your own head,
08:38someone saying it can reinforce.
08:39If someone points out something
08:41that you're already insecure
08:42about in yourself,
08:43all of a sudden
08:44that stuff is like,
08:45it's straight in there.
08:47Don't cyber bully.
08:48Go find a hobby.
08:49Yeah, find a hobby.
08:50Get a job too.
08:51Stop being so concerned
08:52about what other people are doing.
08:53Honestly.
08:54Yeah.
08:55Do you ever hear the term bandwagoning?
08:56Have you heard that term?
08:57Do you know what I mean by that?
08:58You say, oh,
08:59you say, oh yeah,
09:00she's that and she's that
09:01and she's so fake
09:02and she's so this,
09:03and then all of a sudden
09:04everyone's going,
09:05yeah, she's so fake,
09:06and then something goes up
09:07a picture of something fake
09:08and then everyone's liking it.
09:09And we're all somehow
09:10joining in on somebody
09:12being, like, targeted.
09:13And all of a sudden
09:14you're thinking, like,
09:15you're walking to school
09:16thinking, everyone thinks
09:17I'm fake here.
09:18It can be profound, can't it?
09:20So fast put online
09:21like it's going to be there forever.
09:23You don't know what
09:24you could do now,
09:25a photo shop and AI
09:26and all that stuff, like,
09:27so that could ruin you for life.
09:28The world is scared to be
09:30what I think about it like.
09:31It is.
09:36TY student Nicole
09:37has spent more time at home
09:38than in school this year.
09:40Chronic absentee
09:41is the word that you would use.
09:43I'm in every single morning.
09:45I just leave.
09:46I am interested in going into
09:48either law or psychology
09:50or possibly politics after school.
09:52Yeah, expectations.
09:54I'll be straight up with you.
09:55You're saying
09:56you'd like to go into LCA.
09:57I wouldn't let you
09:58inside the door of LCA
09:59because your attendance
10:00is appalling.
10:01Często przez tą panią
10:02płakała
10:03i przez tÄ… paniÄ…
10:04tak naprawdÄ™
10:05była niechęć chodzenia
10:06do szkoły.
10:11Being a part of, like,
10:12organizing the prom
10:13is really enjoyable
10:14and it is
10:15something that
10:16you do get a good laugh out of.
10:21In an effort
10:22to make her stay
10:23just a little bit longer
10:24Paul is channelling
10:26Nicole's passion
10:27for fashion
10:28through the TY Prom
10:29organizing committee.
10:30There's a lot
10:31of work to do.
10:32We have to make sure
10:33that we have everything
10:34gathered together
10:35and then actually
10:36make sure it all works
10:37and then get it all set up.
10:41This side.
10:42They're slightly
10:43closer together.
10:44That's grand.
10:45Oh my god.
10:46Them ones are too close,
10:47not these.
10:48They were too close.
10:49Then you moved it to
10:50for our house.
10:51You could have told me.
10:52When she's here,
10:53she can be really, really good.
10:54There will be times
10:55where we just don't
10:56want to be there
10:57or it's a bad day
10:58and so on.
10:59That's part of the learning.
11:00The only place
11:01she can do that
11:02is in here.
11:06One student
11:07who's walked in the cold shoes
11:08is Alana.
11:09Alana.
11:10Yeah.
11:11Is that you with a book
11:12open studying?
11:13Tis girl.
11:14I'm always studying.
11:15What about you?
11:16What are you going to do?
11:17It's hard making
11:18all these decisions
11:19when you're so young
11:20still like to know.
11:21Yeah, but at the same time.
11:22Like your future is in your hands
11:23now when you're still so young
11:24to be dealing with all that.
11:25You'd hate to find yourself
11:26in that situation, 18, 19
11:27and like have a dream
11:28that you're really passionate
11:29about but you can't.
11:30Just because when you were 16
11:31you just weren't in the mood
11:32to leave and start.
11:33If no one's in the mood
11:34to leave and start
11:35I didn't want to do it either.
11:36Yeah.
11:37I feel like I just don't really
11:38have the motivation
11:39or the energy for us.
11:40Well currently,
11:41but I didn't afford it
11:42I didn't either.
11:43Well my attendance
11:44has gone so bad either
11:45and I'm not going to be able
11:46to get back into like a routine.
11:47Like I feel like either way
11:48like whether do I do
11:49the leave and start
11:50or I'll say like
11:51I won't get much further
11:52or better
11:53with the leave and start.
11:54What?
11:55Girl you can't be thinking about it.
11:56No.
11:57Because I don't
11:58like I'm not an academic person.
11:59Yeah but you're limiting yourself
12:00you're being like
12:01I can't get any further
12:02I can't get any better.
12:03You're only 16 years of age
12:04you can't limit your whole life now.
12:05Like your life's only starting.
12:06There's definitely
12:07way more opportunities available
12:08by doing the traditional
12:09leave and start like
12:10you know.
12:11I mean I'll do it
12:12if she'll do it.
12:13You can't
12:14I've been
12:15You can't make major life decisions
12:16based on what your friends are doing.
12:18Nicole has made the decision
12:20that you know
12:21certain things are not worth her time.
12:23Now we
12:24and I will challenge that
12:26on a regular basis
12:27because if she goes through life
12:28like that
12:29then she's going to have some battle.
12:30Coming up
12:32it's the last day in school
12:34for the class of 2025
12:36and Luke is going out with a bang.
12:39I'll call the cat
12:40Always discreet
12:41Strong protection

12:57Today is an emotional day for the sixth years at CCS
13:04It's absolutely fantastic to see you here.
13:05This is a really important day in the life of the school.
13:11Thank you
13:12Thank you
13:13Thank you
13:14Thank you
13:15Thank you
13:16Thank you
13:17Thank you
13:18Thank you
13:19Thank you
13:20Thank you
13:21Thank you
13:22Well done
13:23Emotional
13:24I'm a wreck
13:25I was bawling in the car
13:26I was bawling last night
13:27But it's fine
13:28I'm keeping it together as of now
13:29Luke O'Mara
13:30Good one
13:31Good one
13:32Good one
13:33Good one
13:34Good one
13:35Good one
13:36It hasn't really hit me yet anything
13:37It doesn't feel like the last, like last day
13:39Good one
13:40Good one
13:41Good one
13:42Graduation day is really important to the students
13:44The teachers and the parents to mark the passing of these students through the school
13:49Oh my god, hysterical
13:54I stopped crying
13:55She started crying and I looked over at her
13:57And then I started crying, and I was in the front row, I was like, no, I'll have you can't.
14:00God, I always cry at that, but a lady gave me a tissue.
14:12Oh my God, look at us in first year.
14:19Smiles and graduation certs mark the end of their years in Cargilline.
14:24But there's still time for one last musical performance.
14:28It's Luke's teacher-student supergroup.
14:34I'm buzzing, I'm absolutely buzzing, it's going to be good.
14:42And I was just watching him and he was just so absorbed in it and he was really enjoying it
14:46and the singing was lovely, so it was very emotional.
14:48But then of course he got the opportunity to play the drums
14:51and I like, I can take my eyes off.
15:06And you know what, it was absolutely brilliant.
15:08It was the best we had played, I think, through all the rehearsals.
15:15But I think it's nice to be kind of playing out to school,
15:17because music was a big part of my CCS experience, really.
15:35Although he spends the majority of his time in mainstream classes,
15:38I think he has a lot of other classes.
15:40He works individually with resource teacher, Mr O'Donovan.
15:45Which kid do you want to sort first, red or green?
15:47I'll go with the green ones.
15:48Green, right.
15:49Will we do a bit of Irish as we do it?
15:51Of course, yes.
15:54Great, super, right.
15:57Out with the green Gansies there.
15:59What's green and Irish again for me, Dermot?
16:01Gloss.
16:03Right, let's get out the Gansey's Gloss.
16:06I honestly think he's by far the best fella to have a talk with.
16:11What's Irish for player?
16:14Imroar.
16:15Imroar.
16:16And Imroar is it?
16:18A him.
16:19In French?
16:20Ah.
16:21Ah, lovely.
16:22He's so bright, so caring, so loving, and just, as a quality, if we mark him by that,
16:30he's amazing, he's a brilliant human being.
16:34Today also marks the school's first mixed-ability rugby training session.
16:39We knew that there was two or three lads within the school that wanted to play mixed-ability rugby,
16:43and we said, you know what, let's have a go of it.
16:47You know, you're not excluding them because they have an additional need.
16:51They're playing, and they're being part of a squad, and they're being treated the exact same.
16:55Set.
16:57And Diarmuid is in his element.
17:00So I actually feel like this is really gonna work out this year, so I'm hoping, fairly soon,
17:04we might be able to get him into the jersey and get him represented in the school.
17:08Three, two, one, set.
17:09Ah, sick Diarmuid.
17:11Two stars.
17:12That was too close.
17:13Do you wanna have another go?
17:14We'll do one more.
17:16I'm ready, I'm ready.
17:23I'm ready, I'm ready.
17:24Like that, right there.
17:25That's all right.
17:26Is it proper, like, are you getting hungry?
17:28Do you know what it is?
17:29Just wake up, your lips is dry.
17:30You're just thirsty in the morning.
17:32So wait, so what time do you guys pray at?
17:33Like, how many prayers do you have a day?
17:35Five.
17:36Five.
17:37That's hard, I wanna lie.
17:38The fasting and all that.
17:39When you do it for, like, three, four days,
17:41this will come after that.
17:42Anyway, you can do that.
17:43You see, sometimes you adjust, you know?
17:44Yeah.
17:45It's a bullshit in the ocean, right, guys?
17:56But the exam's just days away.
17:59Alana is fighting to keep her focus for this final furlong.
18:03I feel like everyone's feeling recently, like,
18:05the anxiety rates among everyone is just really up.
18:08People are, like, actually, like, proper suffering with it.
18:10Anxiety, keep on trying me.
18:14But cometh the leaving cert, cometh the sunshine.
18:17Everybody remembers that period before their leaving certs.
18:20If you're on the couch, you need to study.
18:23If you want to have that cup of tea, you do it.
18:25But you study.
18:26If you're sitting out in the garden, study.
18:29It's just stressful like it.
18:31Ugh.
18:32I hate it.
18:33This is just absolute hell for me.
18:35Anxiety, keep on trying me.
18:39She's gonna have to work hard to get those points
18:41that she's looking for in order that she can get her place
18:44in college.
18:45Had she started a bit earlier,
18:47it might be so much pressure on her.
18:50There'll be no exam ever again as bad as this one.
18:53No college exam, no nothing.
18:56It's months in your life.
18:57So I suppose she's trying, panicking,
18:59trying to get it all done now, kind of quick.
19:02To be honest, as long as she does say,
19:04oh, leave me certain, I don't care.
19:06She's gotta make the space for this work.
19:09It's a really important time in her life.
19:11And it's over to her to make that space and get the work done.
19:15What's the crack with the last few days now?
19:18Are you doing the prom?
19:19Yeah.
19:20I put up these gold and black ones.
19:21I saw you doing them, yeah.
19:22Yeah.
19:23You have a future by an interior design, have you?
19:24I do, yeah.
19:25They were...
19:26Keep your options open, but you never know.
19:27They were a retractable up, no worries.
19:28They took forever.
19:29It's prom day.
19:30And the event committee are working flat out
19:31to put the finishing touches to the school hall.
19:33But one member is missing in action.
19:35Nicole Gafka.
19:36You, you're meant to be here.
19:37I think it would have been easier if we had more people in,
19:39like the event planning group that were meant to be here to help.
19:42Ha!
19:43Ha!
19:44Gorgeous.
19:45I wasn't in school for the last two days, but I went in yesterday
19:49to get my ticket and the place looked pretty good.
19:50It was all coming together.
19:51It was all coming together.
19:52It was all coming together.
19:53It was all coming together.
19:54It was all coming together.
19:55It was all coming together.
19:56It was all coming together.
19:57And the event committee are working flat out to put the finishing touches
19:59to the school hall.
20:00But one member is missing in action.
20:02Nicole Gafka.
20:03You, you're meant to be here.
20:04I think it would have been easier if we had more people in,
20:06like the event planning group that were meant to be here to help.
20:09Ha!
20:10Gorgeous.
20:11I feel like I didn't really abandon it, because I gave, like,
20:14a very early heads up that I will not be in there.
20:18People just have to, like, just finish up the last couple of things,
20:21I'd say.
20:22But it's really good that they're actually willing to do that,
20:24especially on the day of...
20:26The rest of this week, I'm not going in, but next week,
20:29I'll probably come in for as much as I can.
20:32Exams?
20:33I don't know about exams.
20:35I have about a half an hour left.
20:38I have to just do quick make-up touch-ups, and then get dressed,
20:47get on my TikToks and photos, obviously.
20:49And then I should be able to head out.
20:52Wow.
20:53Wow.
20:54Wow.
20:55How you look better.
20:56Princess.
20:57Princess.
20:58Princess.
20:59My mom's really emotional about the whole day, but, like,
21:02she's always been really emotional about, like, every single little stuff, like,
21:07of me growing up, really, like, even just finishing the school year, like,
21:12she always just gets really, like, emotional about it.
21:27This is one school date Nicole was never going to miss.
21:31Yeah, it's actually really good.
21:33Like, I feel like...
21:34We put in a lot of effort.
21:35All the effort that we put in is kind of paying back now.
21:39Time for a reality check for Nicole.
21:41I did the stars.
21:42Yeah, you did nothing.
21:43You weren't in.
21:44I wasn't here.
21:45But, I was sick.
21:58Coming up, post-prom, it's back to a la carte attendance for Nicole.
22:03Your attendance since the last time.
22:05I feel like it's gone worse.
22:11Always discreet, strong protection, incredible discretion.
22:16Always discreet, strong protection, incredible discretion.
22:25Nicole is in school today, but with the weather this good, she might not be here for long.
22:30I can't wait to go.
22:31I'm so tired.
22:32I'd love to leave.
22:33I'm leaving.
22:34I'm not leaving.
22:35I'm not leaving.
22:36It's 21 degrees now.
22:37Yeah, and we're stuck here in uniform.
22:38I'm here, UV5.
22:39It's going up to UV7.
22:40I'll lay down on the bench.
22:41That's my cue to leave.
22:42I won't lay.
22:43It's 11.40.
22:44I didn't go to the prom, but I heard it was an absolute success.
22:46And Nicole, in fair play, she did everything she said she would do, but it's probably a good job that it was at night time, because it was during the day, she'd probably have gone to the beach.
23:02Are you coming?
23:03No.
23:04She tends to turn up for the good stuff, like the proms and the positive stuff, but she is becoming a bit of an issue again in relation to her attendance around school.
23:13She's not playing ball.
23:15Chronic absenteeism again.
23:16If she keeps that up, she's going to have some battle.
23:19Hello.
23:20Hi.
23:21How are you?
23:22How are you?
23:23Come on.
23:24Come on in.
23:25Let's have a chat.
23:26How was the prom?
23:27It was really good.
23:28Yeah?
23:29Yeah.
23:30It was a great night for everyone.
23:31Excellent.
23:32I loved it.
23:33Did you?
23:34I did.
23:35John, I'll have a quick look at since the last time now.
23:38I'll look you in the eye now in a second.
23:40Your attendance since the last time.
23:41I feel like it's gone worse.
23:43It's got worse.
23:44Paul has raised the possibility of Nicole doing the Leaving Cert applied, but the jury's still out.
23:51I've pushed in my forms for LCA, and I got accepted in, and I put in the, like, I think it's the consent forms that my mum signed and stuff.
24:00Well, my mum's kind of changing her mind about me doing LCA, and I think she wants me to do the regular fifth and sixth year now again.
24:08I feel like she just thinks I'd be better off doing it in the long run or something.
24:11What do you think?
24:12Genuinely between you and me.
24:14I think that I'd be better off doing LCA, and I feel like it would bring me into school a lot more than I would be here, like, because I'd actually have to be here.
24:23I think that all the children are so intelligent and brave that they can be a normal program, and not confined.
24:30If Nicole was to do the traditional Leaving Cert, there's a lot of studying to be done.
24:37Unfortunately, based on what I know about Nicole, I think the impact on her would be absenteeism.
24:42I think after a while, the pressure, she'll just let it go.
24:46That would be my concern for Nicole.
24:48I think you and I both know where you should be.
24:50Yeah.
24:51You just need to talk to Mum.
24:52Perfect.
24:53OK, Nicole, mind yourself.
24:55I'll see you.
24:56I'm a bit surprised, because I wasn't expecting Mr. Burke to be, like, on my side as much as he is.
25:00I was kind of expecting him to be like, OK, well, if your mum is saying that, like, would you not think it's better off?
25:04Well, he's actually, like, fully, like, supporting it, so.
25:07All right, is that OK?
25:16Is everyone with me?
25:17Amy, are you good?
25:18Are you sure?
25:19Sophia, are you good?
25:20Excellent.
25:21William, you're good.
25:22Stunning.
25:23Ben, are you all right over there?
25:24I'm fine.
25:25Are you sure?
25:26Because your copy's closed.
25:27Well, it's my job.
25:28It's just there for show.
25:29Fab, great.
25:30Excellent.
25:31Rhys, are you OK with that?
25:32With the junior cert exams imminent, Diarmuid is laser-focused on his classroom.
25:36This morning, it's his favourite subject, French.
25:40Hi, how are we?
25:41Oh, we're absolutely good today.
25:43We're absolutely good today.
25:44Flying.
25:45You just give me so much positivity.
25:47Oh, yeah, I most certainly do know.
25:50What are we doing?
25:52I've got some French to do today.
25:55So working with Miss Farley was pretty good.
25:59I had to get a blog done on, like, my exam papers for French.
26:05And what did you say how you travelled?
26:08En avion.
26:09En avion.
26:10Excellent.
26:11Exactement.
26:12Exactement.
26:13OK.
26:14It was like going on a holiday to Bordeaux.
26:17That's what it was all about, like, a little blog on it.
26:20Il fait de la natation.
26:23Fabulous.
26:24Exactement.
26:25Exactement.
26:26He loves languages.
26:28He loves going to French and he will parlez-vous en français at home.
26:33You're so good at languages, you know that?
26:36Yeah, my accent is brilliant.
26:38Your accent is fab.
26:39And you're very good at Irish as well.
26:41Yeah?
26:42Yeah.
26:43Oh, I just came up with another one.
26:45The gaily.
26:46Fab.
26:47Go for it.
26:48And you do dancing as well.
26:50And...
26:51I'm only joking.
26:53I know that.
26:55OK.
26:56What else we could say?
26:58And I eat the sausage.
27:00OK.
27:01I eat the sausage.
27:02Do you like sausages?
27:03Oh, I love sausages.
27:04They are brilliant on together.
27:06Do you?
27:07I think she was really impressed by the way I was speaking it, I'd say.
27:11Then I just jot down my name.
27:15Yes.
27:16After acing his language skills, Diarmid's up for some more continental flavours
27:21with barista training in the school's newest innovation.
27:24The coffee dock is a major part now of our school.
27:28It is for students who have difficulty gaining meaningful work experience.
27:34Here.
27:35Hannah.
27:36How are we?
27:37Hannah's going to teach us everything today, Diarmid.
27:39OK.
27:40So I'm just going to go over here.
27:41So, Diarmid, I might get you to pop on the other side.
27:43OK.
27:44So this is our group head.
27:45So this is where the coffee goes into.
27:47OK.
27:48Press it down nice and hard.
27:50Perfect.
27:51Yeah, put that in under first.
27:52Sorry.
27:53You're ahead of me.
27:54OK.
27:55So, will we crack on with the milk?
27:56OK.
27:57OK.
27:58Drunk it off.
27:59Perfect.
28:00And fired and wiped.
28:01And...
28:02Beautiful.
28:03Well done.
28:04Nice one.
28:05Yeah.
28:06Do you want to try it?
28:07Do you want to taste it?
28:08Not bad.
28:09Max, out of 10 now, Diarmid, what are you giving yourself?
28:11I'd say probably 10.
28:12Oh, nice!
28:13Oh!
28:14Whoa!
28:15It went absolutely well.
28:17It felt really good.
28:18Oh, that is good.
28:19Oh, that is good.
28:20And I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.
28:23Could you...
28:24And did you hear Tipperary ended up getting the fella sent off?
28:26He's full of the chat and...
28:28I could see him, like, even with the customers in my shop, having a ball.
28:31Oh, that felt good.
28:32Anybody in Leaving Cert centres, you can now go into the cafeteria and the D area.
28:44It's been a long and winding road for cargo lines six years.
28:48But finally, the first morning of the Leaving Cert has arrived.
28:51Do not bring your bags.
28:54You leave your bags up along the halls up here.
28:56Okay, so bring what you need.
28:57Day one of the Leaving Cert for anybody is a daunting day.
29:01They've been preparing for so long.
29:03It's such a big stakes exam.
29:06There's not a lot of things in a teenager's life that has the level of pressure that a Leaving Cert has.
29:12And the pressure on Luke is enormous.
29:18He was grey leaving the house.
29:21I was like, oh, God, I came up by the few tears.
29:24I just, you know, you just feel so much for them.
29:27You know, I'm wondering, you know, this is such a huge thing.
29:30I'm sure I wasn't the only one in Ireland this morning worrying about them.
29:33I really want a good one.
29:35I probably will get really stressed when I get in there.
29:40I don't know.
29:42I don't know, it's weird.
29:44I think it's been cool to see him persevere through all the kind of challenges that have come his way
29:49to get to the point where, okay, I've put in a lot of work over the last few months
29:53and now, hopefully, it should come to fruition in the next few weeks.
29:57It's tough.
29:58Two exams on the first day, but I suppose I have the most energy now and the most brain power, hopefully.
30:02I know at this point, stress is just kind of like, it's kind of gone.
30:05You're just kind of sick of it.
30:06I'm just like, I want it done.
30:07Like, there's nothing more that can be done now, so you just have to get on with it.
30:09We had a long, long battle with her, but to get her here today, doing her Leaving Cert, is a fantastic achievement.
30:22Along with 65,000 other students across Ireland, Alanna and Luke get this final chapter of their school education underway.
30:32We've watched them grow, we've watched them be upset, we've looked after them, we've had great fun with them.
30:39We'll miss them, we'll miss them. We always do.
30:55There's also end of year exams underway in the TY room, but one candidate is missing in action.
31:02So, today Nicole skipped our history exam.
31:06I was meant to be doing this interview with Nicole, and she's at home in bed.
31:12She's obviously ducking exams.
31:15That's just not good enough.
31:17And now, even her BFF, Evie's patience is being tested.
31:21I've been stuck in school. Nicole's been at the beach, getting a tan.
31:27She couldn't really care what she's doing, because we're in fourth year. Like, it's not that important.
31:32The easy cop-out is just leaving the building. That does nothing for her.
31:39Since you're not here, we'll ask you questions on the phone.
31:43OK.
31:45How do you feel about missing the last two days of school?
31:49Not really that bothered about it, to be honest.
31:54Are you doing LCR or leaving, sir?
31:57Do you want me to be well honest?
31:59Yeah.
32:00I still don't know.
32:02And now I'm going to the beach.
32:04Bye-bye, Cece. I'll see you next year.
32:08We've tried to get a pattern going with Nicole, but it kind of hasn't worked.
32:12And what we do is we just come back again, and we keep trying, and we keep chipping away.
32:18I think if Nicole does LCA, and she'll stay in school, she will do really, really well for herself.
32:24I am concerned that if she goes into a regular leaving cert, pressure's going to mount there,
32:29and she won't be prepared for that, and I am worried about that for her.
32:34Chase it now!
32:35Coming up, Dermid's dreams come true as he gets to line out for CCS.
32:41Always discreet, strong protection, incredible discretion.
32:52Always discreet, strong protection, incredible discretion.
32:57After a gruelling two weeks of exams, it's Alana's last day in Kargiline.
33:06And she's ready to start looking at her school days in the rearview mirror.
33:12All done. Just finished my last exam.
33:18Every decision I've made for the last two or three years has been leading up to this day,
33:21and it's just kind of, it's very overwhelming, so like, it just doesn't hit you.
33:27I didn't think it was going to happen. Ask my mother, ask anyone.
33:30No one thought I was going to get to it, and I did.
33:32My God, I thought this day would never come.
33:35Mama, aww, beauty, flowers. Brilliant.
33:41Anyway, it's all over, done with, and I am so happy,
33:44and we can start getting on with our lives that we give.
33:47Oh, God! Oh! Praise the Lord!
33:49Mixed emotions about leaving, but all I know is that I'm definitely ready for what's next.
33:55Welcome to the big bad world.
33:58I know you'll be banned.
34:00See you, lads.
34:02With his leaving cert also behind him, Luke has decided to take a year out.
34:11But first, a chance to reflect on just how far he's come.
34:15I think I did a leaving cert I'd be happy with.
34:18And I don't know if the leaving cert, like, somebody else would be happy with, but it's what I'm happy with.
34:22100% day-to-day medication was the job.
34:25What's the job like?
34:28Next is hopping on a flight straight to Fort Ventura in the Canaries.
34:33Get that for him.
34:34Oh, no.
34:35That was my, like, this is, like, my learner's permit.
34:38Our family is big into scuba diving from my dad's side.
34:41So now I'm off with all my gear.
34:44I prefer six months to be an instructor, to take people out on dives.
34:50Oh, I'm buzzing. I'm so excited.
34:55It's time for the first day of the next chapter of Luke's life.
34:59Half of my school days behind me is definitely an odd feeling, but it's a good one.
35:05I'm not looking backwards the more I'm looking forward.
35:07I'm gassed. I'm so excited.
35:10Oh, look, it's been fine.
35:11The bedroom is emptied, literally emptied.
35:16House will be quiet for them.
35:17House will be quiet.
35:18No, I'm delighted.
35:19Plenty hot water as well.
35:20Plenty hot water, yeah.
35:22We are immeasurably proud.
35:30I say we'll hear from Luke when there's mild crisis.
35:34Yeah, probably when he needs money.
35:36Yeah.
35:37Mild crisis.
35:39He's a good kid.
35:40He's a wonderful kid.
35:41And, again, this week, so many things have happened that make you look at him and think,
35:47well, he's just a wonderful kid.
35:49And, yeah, we're very proud.
35:52It's also a massive end-of-year moment for Diarmid as he gets to line out for the school.
36:07I think sometimes with schools people can, you know, underestimate the effect that extracurricular
36:13activities can have, whether it's sports or drama or whatever it is.
36:16Very best of luck to you, lads.
36:17And, obviously, you're investing a lot of your own time into it.
36:20And some people, you know, they're willing to put that time in.
36:22Other people, you know, they've got other stuff in their lives that they want to invest their time into.
36:26For me, I'm delighted I can invest my time into something like the rugby within the school.
36:33And it's a privilege to give that time because you feel like you're actually doing your job.
36:37Right, gents, grab your gear bags and everything from the boot, please.
36:41It's just a very normal school that do extraordinary things.
36:45Right, Diarmid, on you when you're ready.
36:47Get ready, get ready, get ready.
36:48Go on, Olin, let's pump those legs now.
36:50That's it, that's it, go on.
36:51Getting mixed ability rugby up and running into school, I think it's so important.
36:55It's never going to go away now.
36:56Clear out now, Diarmid!
36:57That's it, clear out, clear out!
36:58Well done, Diarmid!
36:59Good stuff!
37:00And that's what rugby is about.
37:01Everyone being welcome and feeling like they're part of a group.
37:04Forward, man.
37:05Can you drop me on my arse for a second there?
37:07I play rugby for Balancholic Warriors.
37:11My role is centre-forward.
37:13Ready, ready, ready, go!
37:15It's like where you have to go on the wing and stop the attackers from coming at you.
37:21Drive on as much as possible and then go down.
37:24I need a little bit of aggression, okay?
37:27One, two, three!
37:29Let's go!
37:31Go on now, boys, get out there!
37:33In with Eric, let's go!
37:35Go on, Eric!
37:36Chase it now!
37:37Go!
37:38Go!
37:39Get after him, Alex!
37:40Diarmid wants to win.
37:41He is fiercely competitive.
37:43That's ridiculous.
37:44That's the other way.
37:45Go, Caelan!
37:46He digs deep for everybody.
37:49He wants them to succeed.
37:51Yes!
37:52Well done, lads!
37:54On the build-up to him coming onto the pitch, he might as well be another coach.
37:58That's at least a yellow card.
38:00He is giving out advice.
38:01He is telling lads what to do.
38:03Put him out!
38:04Get the ball off him, lads!
38:06He is just so invested in the team.
38:10Go on!
38:11You're good!
38:12You're good!
38:13It is a joy to see.
38:15Go!
38:16Woo!
38:17We're back in it!
38:18Yeah, I definitely should be a commentator when I grow up.
38:22Now we need another one out back, Aaron.
38:25I think we need to keep going at him and then we might get tries if we keep going like that.
38:31But we need to show a little bit of aggression to get back.
38:34It's time for Diarmuid to finally walk the walk.
38:37We'll put him on the pitch.
38:38It's time I can get them, boys.
38:40The eyebrows go down.
38:41He is the tournament.
38:43Okay, Diarmuid is ready.
38:44I'm going on.
38:45I'm going on.
38:46He is going over the whitewash.
38:48Let's go, Diarmuid, Daniel!
38:49Let's go!
38:50Let's go, Diarmuid!
38:51It felt really good coming on.
38:55That brightens my day up, really.
38:57Let's go, Diarmuid!
38:58Big scrum!
38:59That's it, Diarmuid!
39:00Come on!
39:01He's going to corner.
39:02Flag it!
39:03We nearly had it, but we didn't.
39:06Right, in you go, lads.
39:07Shake hands.
39:08Hard look today, look.
39:10My favourite part was just coming on and helping the boys push on and showing some good fighting
39:18spirits and all.
39:19Well done, boys.
39:20And someday we will win some more matches.
39:22Today wasn't that day, but you know what?
39:24It didn't matter because for Diarmuid, getting on that pitch and representing the school,
39:29I think everyone that was there with him, that was the win that they wanted.
39:33How did you find today?
39:34Great.
39:35At least we put up an effort like…
39:36Do you know what?
39:37We did.
39:38Diarmuid's had the best year and we get to have three more years of it.
39:41I've had an absolute fantastic year from my point of view.
39:46I need to teach you to be a greedy rugby player.
39:48And I think Mr O'Donovan, he doesn't see him as a child with autism.
39:52He sees him as Diarmuid, who goes to shoot…
39:55Sorry.
39:57Yeah, I'd say I'll do it in the cup now.
40:02Cup competition, so you're going to get greedy for me.
40:04Yeah, if I was going to give this a score, I would give it 10 out of 10.
40:07We'll make it happen, Diarmuid.
40:09We'll get ourselves a win.
40:10Lovely.
40:22Doomsday is here, Mother.
40:23The day Alana has been dreading has arrived.
40:26I know.
40:27This is grand.
40:28I'd say it'll be fine.
40:29I'm like…
40:30My heart's going a bit like…
40:32Whatever.
40:33I'm excited for it.
40:34Will you have a cup of tea?
40:35I will, absolutely.
40:36Jesus Christ.
40:37I have to go through all my major life events with a cup of tea.
40:41For Luke, leaving cert results morning lands with a splash.
40:45Everything happens for a reason anyway.
40:49Do you know what?
40:50Whatever she gets, it'll be grand.
40:53Yeah.
40:57Okay, let's see in a minute.
40:59All these emotions are going to come out now.
41:01I'm going to end up screaming some of my results.
41:05Vlog-in failed.
41:11Alright, ready?
41:12Good.
41:17Oh, my God!
41:20Okay.
41:21The higher the number is, the better.
41:22Alright.
41:23H3.
41:24H3.
41:25French, I thought that was 04, 05 territory.
41:28Business, I did think that was H2.
41:30Home Ec, I thought that was maybe H4.
41:32Oh, my God!
41:33I have so many people.
41:34This is the best I could have gone.
41:36And it's higher 1 or 5.
41:37What a result for Alana.
41:39Just amazing what she has done.
41:41If she's a force to be reckoned with.
41:43Kerrygline Community School won't be the same without her.
41:45Oh, what?
41:49Irish, 04.
41:50English, H2.
41:52Maths, H5.
41:54German, H4.
41:55Physics, H5.
41:56Okay.
41:57Engineering, H2.
41:58Music, H3.
42:00Dude.
42:01I haven't done the points yet, but that's not bad, is it?
42:04I got a H1 anyway in politics, which was like...
42:07I always thought I got a H1 in politics.
42:10And I'm so proud.
42:15I got some crazy points.
42:17If she's happy, I'm happy.
42:19And she has enough points by all accounts to get her course.
42:22So all is good?
42:23485.
42:24That's good.
42:25625 is the maximum.
42:29Good count.
42:31And when Luke comes up for air...
42:33Very happy with the results, guys.
42:35Everybody at home, if you're wondering.
42:37H5 in maths.
42:38Which is absolutely delighted with it.
42:40So, Mr Armani, thank you very much.
42:43To see him get the results that he got at the end of it.
42:45Not just pass, but actually really well in maths and the leading cert at higher level.
42:49It was a joy to see.
42:55You can't believe it.
42:56We're absolutely over the moon for him.
43:01I do know this.
43:03That coming out of the leading cert without a feeling of shame.
43:07A sense of shame, you know, and really understanding.
43:10Even for ADHD people, that's really hard, I think.
43:12So, yeah.
43:13We're delighted.
43:14He gets to leave it behind him and move on with his life.
43:18Hey, Dad.
43:19How are things?
43:20Nothing bad.
43:21How are you glad?
43:22Great.
43:23I just got the results there.
43:24Dad, it went the best.
43:25I could have gone.
43:26Seriously.
43:27You know, you see this date when you're on the fifth year.
43:29You know, 22nd of August, 2025, or whatever year we have now.
43:33And you're like, yeah, whatever.
43:34But when you actually get here, it's ridiculous.
43:36Luke, signing out.
43:38See you in the future.
43:40What a year it's been for Cargilline Community School.
43:47Do you know what?
43:48I love coming in here every day.
43:50Morning, four cheers.
43:51I'm really proud of this school.
43:53I'm really proud of what we do.
43:55I know what it is about this school, but I just think the students have a phenomenal sense of humour.
43:59It's like a different world.
44:02It's like you're in a protective bubble.
44:05I think it's the best thing in the world ever.
44:08School is a community.
44:09It's about bringing people together, getting them to feel like they're part of something.
44:14People often say it's not a job that you do for the money.
44:17It's vocation and you get into a gig like this to see kids progress and to help them as best you can.
44:22You know, I think everyone here in Cargilline is very invested in that.
44:25It's an absolute privilege to work with young people.
44:30It really keeps you in touch with what's going on.
44:36It's one of those weird emotional roller coasters.
44:39You start off with a year group that you hardly know and then it builds, it builds, it builds.
44:43And then suddenly it's done.
44:49It was a great experience.
44:53Yeah, just don't follow me anywhere else lads.
44:56Follow me on TikTok or Instagram.
45:00Cut, cut, get rid of it.
45:17Crime journalist Nicola Tallent spilled her guts on keeping her nerve
45:20in the series finale of Living With Lucy, up next on Virgin Media Play and One.
45:26We'll see you next time.
45:27See you next time.
45:28See you next time.
45:29Bye bye.
45:35Bye bye.
