00:00Penang Executive Councilor Wang Hon Wai hit out at Kedah Manjibasar, Sanusi Noor over
00:06his continued pursuit of a multi-million lease payment for Penang Island and Sabang Prai.
00:11Wang said Sanusi should save his energy and focus on developing Kedah instead of reigniting
00:16centuries-old claims concerning Penang status. The state executive council member also said that
00:22Penang's sovereignty was long settled under the federal constitution and should no longer be
00:27questioned. Sanusi told the Kedah Assembly on October 10th that the state government was
00:32finalizing the appointment of a legal team to take court action over the state's relationship with
00:37Penang. In 2021, Kedah demanded RM100 million a year from the federal government as a lease payment for
00:44Penang Island and Sabang Prai, citing a supposed agreement between the Kedah Sultanate and the
00:49British in 1791. However, historians have said that no formal lease document exists while the
00:56Penang government maintains that the Sultanate effectively ceded the territories after independence.
