00:00the highlands and islands of scotland is britain's biggest beat i'm injured with the car on fire
00:10i've got three wounded persons it is really easy to underestimate the highlands patrolling 12 000
00:18square miles of mountains lochs and islands we're going to need a launch to be able to go out and
00:26get this boy lifted and searching for suspects deep in the wilderness the highland cops must go above
00:35and beyond to protect their communities we realized it was human remains so came back down and found the
00:41police i think in the highlands the blue line is very thin tackling traditional rural crimes it's
00:47absolutely related with shotgun pellet it's clear evidence that these birds are being persecuted
00:53and crimes that plague the nation
00:58oh good effort bags of a white crystalline powder if you're getting one person off the street
01:04then it's like you've done your job this series goes inside the uk's most distinctive police force
01:12we are close we live in close-knit communities all right let's go we look out for each other
01:17to find out what it takes to walk the beach there's monkeys there's parrots it's all completely a lot of
01:24our comfort zone and keep the peace you just threatened to kill it said you were going to
01:28strangle it in some of the most beautiful and wild places in the uk
01:33case ness a remote landscape exposed to the storms of the north sea and the winds that whip in from the north atlantic
01:56we're the furthest north that you can get on mainland britain we would definitely classify ourselves as a
02:04an island on the mainland
02:10sergeant stephen todd's base in wick is as close to oslo as it is to london
02:16his beat covers more than 600 square miles it's a fairly big patch for
02:23minimal staff and being a sergeant and four cops sometimes it's a huge area we've got to cover
02:31we are very remote we are left to our own devices in terms of we've just got to manage the risk
02:37ourselves nine times out of ten and any additional resources that we need you're looking at a couple
02:42of hours at least before we can get them to us this is a place which attracts those hoping to escape
02:51from the world and that can bring its own policing challenges we will have a quick brief here before
02:59we go today stephen and a specialist dog handling unit from inverness are providing backup to the sspca
03:08on a potentially dangerous assignment we'll do a soft approach first if that doesn't work then
03:13osu they're fully kitted up they'll force entry if need be an sspca officer who's investigating
03:20allegations of neglect at a remote property when they were threatened with a dog say sspca-led
03:27warren so it's just be mindful of your surroundings and don't take any unnecessary risks
03:32now the sspca are returning with a warrant to seize the dog along with dozens of other animals they
03:43suspect have been kept in bad conditions we know at least one of the dogs is subject to a dog control
03:48notice which basically means that a dog's potentially bitten someone previously well we're going to be in
03:54full riot gear anyway right that's just our level of protection so we need to put that on the dog handling
03:59team are carrying shields that can deliver an electric charge to an animal if it becomes aggressive
04:06best way to describe it is a taser in a shield form we know there's potentially one aggressive dog there
04:13we know there's six in total i've got to treat all six dogs as being aggressive until i can prove otherwise
04:20the dog they are most worried about is a german shepherd crossed with a belgian malinois
04:26a breed known for its strength and fierce bite it is aggressive so she said it probably will be
04:31likely to try and bite we use them in the police we know what their capabilities are of them
04:39yeah go ahead we're just getting in the motors now but dogs are just one of stephen's worries
04:45he's been told to expect a menagerie of exotic animals there's parrots there's some monkeys there as
04:52well so it's all completely well out of our comfort zone what we need is doggy treats
04:58i wonder if dog treats work on monkeys as well
05:02i feel sad for the animals because they're not kept in a suitable condition for them for example
05:07monkeys they should be out in the jungle somewhere rather than in cave nests basically living in a shack
05:12the woman they're about to visit lives in an isolated stretch of coast she recently moved here from
05:22england there's definitely that mentality that cave nests were so far away who's going to stop them type
05:28of thing but i'll be brutally honest if people are kind of wanting to hide in the shadows they need to
05:33go to cities for that if they're actually by coming up to places that are rural they stand out more
05:38people think they come to the ends of the earth because they're going to kind of escape it all
05:44whereas actually they they flag pretty quick on our radars i think that's her van that's her van
05:50the gray one yeah so she's just down so if we you see that's her house there right in front of you
06:01i've got a copy of the warrants so i'll come down with whoever with
06:04dave try and make a peaceful entry but the dogs are in the back so you know roofing that chimney
06:10coming out yeah that's where the dogs are cool we head up
06:17all right so it's padlock shut as well stephen is prepared to confront an angry dog
06:25all right sorry we've got to meet under these circumstances we're here
06:29assisting the sspca expect they have a warring but the owner is also prepared and is in no mood
06:36to let anyone in we've come to film a belgium animal
06:41chili what are you just gonna kill him take him away and kill him
06:51while some parts of the highlands are isolated from the rest of the uk
06:56in its only city others are grappling with the worst aspects of modern crime
07:02today dc ashley templeton will be involved in an operation targeting the city's illegal drug trade
07:11there is a drugs problem in inverness the drugs will be brought to inverness by organized crime groups
07:19who originate predominantly in england whether it be london newcastle birmingham any big city
07:26it's nearly the end of ashley's shift but the police have just received a tip-off
07:31about a suspected dealer connected to one of these groups known as the frankie line intelligence says
07:39she's currently dealing from her home address and she's sitting on multi-ounce quantities of control
07:44drugs there is fairly recent intelligence on it as well for operating for county blinds
07:51about six weeks ago she was assessed to be working for the frankie line
07:55they're a birman-based organized crime group they've been putting out synthetic heroin
08:01that's been responsible for a number of drugs deaths
08:03synthetic heroin is generally a lot stronger than traditional heroin there was a spate of overdoses
08:14and that was induced by a synthetic opiate that the frankie group ended up using
08:20so the plan is effect entry and just to contain the occupants of the address
08:24following that we'll be looking to crave a search warrant
08:28as the intel has just come in the police have had no time to arrange a search warrant
08:36but because the drugs believed to be sold at this house are so lethal
08:40they decide to raid the property immediately and then wait for the search warrant to be granted
08:47there is situations where we can enter a property by use of force without warrantry
08:54on this occasion it was due to information we had received that the frankie group were selling
09:02heroin that contained synthetic opiates and it is a huge public health concern
09:11this is more of an ad hoc on the job kind of less planned approach organized crime groups and county
09:17lines groups are always looking to adapt their tactics to avoid being detected by police
09:23these are the exciting ones we have to be willing and open-minded enough to adapt our tactics as well
09:30within the law in order to detect crime and to protect people
09:36this is just the the ram we use to put the doors in so the big red key some people call it
09:42with it being county lines related it's likely to be crack cocaine and heroin the quantities can vary quite a
09:55lot on a good day a few ounces of drugs would be nice but there might not be as much as that there
10:01there could be more than that we'll just wait and see you do get the wee rush before you go in especially when
10:07you get the responsibility of putting the door in
10:21it's okay just to give her a quick search you stand up for me okay as we were running in she was like she bent down and she was messing about with that table for something i don't know what
10:46inside they find two women who are taken into custody leaving ashley and his colleague to look
10:52after the dog who seems friendly but until they get a search warrant the police can only look not touch
11:00there's signs of drugs misuse in the house and one of the females has got a quantity of cash in her
11:10pocket questions are raised as to why there's so much cash on her person um like there's needles and
11:16there's scales and wrappings and all that kind of stuff and there's one more telltale sign that the
11:22people who live here could be involved in supplying drugs that's a phone that's been ringing constantly
11:28since we've been in the address i don't know about you but i'm not as popular as these people anyway
11:32you know um which again is another sign of drugs misuse you know they do all their dealings over
11:40the phones so the fact that's ringing pretty constantly is a a sign for us if the tip-off is
11:47correct this unassuming house is at the center of a lucrative trade in a deadly drug this particular
11:57person is living in a lovely row of almost kind of retirement bungalows elderly people on either side
12:04they'll have people knocking on their doors all time in the night mistaking their house for this house
12:09uh people banging on windows and it'd be terrifying for anyone if like two three in the morning someone's
12:17rattling your door or rattling your window but you know you've got elderly people vulnerable people in
12:22the street who are trying to live a quiet life back at headquarters ashley's colleagues are working on
12:28getting sign off on the search warrant until then he will need to wait car keys in hand ready to go home
12:36for a nice sunny evening and uh here we are standing in the house for hours on end this is me getting
12:42the text when when are you due home are you going to be home when time for dinner
12:58in case ness stephen todd is backing up officers from the sspca who have a want to seize a danger
13:06dog we have brought an independent vet with us to assess the living conditions if she obviously
13:11said everything's okay independent indeed but not employed by the sspca before the sspca can inspect
13:18the house the dangerous dog inside needs to be safely removed the shepherd normal across would it be
13:27amenable if you were to bring the dog out rather than us put it to sleep with me because it's going to be
13:33so traumatic i'm not saying that's going to happen it's just we can't do an assessment on a dog it's
13:38going to try and bite us all the time they'll be going into one of our cages it's a crate that they've
13:43got see him again and he died with strangers on the node
13:48and without me to hold him you'll have to shoot him she's very clearly distraught as far as she's
13:54concerned those animals are her life the woman reluctantly allows the police to approach her dogs
14:05we're going to go for the dangerous ground as you can tell from the noise in the background she's got
14:11no control over it whatsoever the plan is to take any animals living inside the only ones that are
14:33stay in are the ones that can live outside with your pigs and your horses finally the police can enter the house
14:47i don't even know how to describe it
14:51they find a menagerie of tropical animals including marmoset monkeys and parrots exposed to the caithness
14:58weather obviously we're in the house now exposed to the sky it's all the rain water and wind's going
15:05to be coming straight at the house there's no door she's living in this for stephen the smell of animal
15:13faeces is overpowering it's quite ammonia like um you know you'd expect some dirt with animals but
15:21certainly certainly not this it's just complete and utter state i mean you've got light fixtures
15:30above like a falling down you've got a roof it's caving in i would say the house in general is probably
15:38the worst house i've ever been in it didn't even have a roof there's tiles missing on part of the roof
15:43where she was living out of one wall is completely missing completely exposed to the elements
15:47steven is here to protect the animal's welfare but as he explores the house further he realises
15:56the welfare of the owner is also at risk
16:02well see in terms of any like additional support is there anything that we can try and put in place
16:06for you to help kill myself today because i can't help you to live without the animal well we can't
16:12leave you when you're making comments like that because i will nothing left for me i'm concerned
16:17about you living here you've not experienced a winter and keenness i've experienced a winter i've
16:21lived in a stable for two and a half years with these dogs it can't fit minus 10 i lived in the
16:26stable minus 10 i've been there two and a half years so yeah i can cope are you quite happy to live
16:32like that yes if i've got my dogs we're not in the business of taking things away just because we can
16:39we have to weigh it up with the pros and cons and ultimately we've got to look after the welfare of
16:44the animals her attitude towards the dogs she clearly loves them she clearly cares for them she's
16:52just physically incapable of looking after them that's it you know you're acting in the dog's best
17:01interest and what no the animal's best interest but i say it's a family
17:09it's heartbreaking earlier life and soul terrible watching it this is the crap part about our job
17:20the animals will be checked by vets before being rehomed or sent to specialist sanctuaries
17:27only three horses and two pigs will remain in the woman's care the sspca were right to get that
17:34warrant the animals needed to come away with them but the actions we took were legal unethical
17:41the animals can go off to you know other homes habitats you know that wasn't the right place for them
17:56the cairngorms one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the uk but in bad weather one of the
18:10most hostile it's been spotless we're going to help you we manage kenrara estate on the outskirts of abidmore
18:19every year people lose their lives in these hills and some of those who have disappeared here still
18:26haven't been found we've had some contractors on the place today who believe they may have come across
18:33the remains of a body today ds joe newson is investigating a terrible discovery in the hills
18:41above abidmore we're just going to the kenrara estate which is just to the southwest of abidmore
18:48which is where the remains were found up on the hillside
18:50we were found by a chap who was up on the estate doing a deer survey and saw what he initially
18:57thought was a deer carcass when he went over he realized it was a human remains with clothing on
19:03so came back down phoned the police the initial assessment is to primarily look at the remains
19:10themselves the composition they're in anything untoward about what we see
19:15we see it abidmore is a fairly small town sitting in the spay valley you don't have to go very far
19:23tall from the town itself until you're in some pretty remote and inaccessible terrain
19:32it's quite possible for people to go missing in the wilderness up here and the chances of them
19:38ever being found is pretty minimal these human remains are lying on rough terrain
19:45just over a mile away from the nearest road according to the caller they are badly decomposed
19:51so identifying the body could be a challenge i'm winging it a bit now i think it's probably up that track
20:02joe does have one lead the discovery of the remains could be linked to the disappearance of a man
20:0816 months ago his name is rodrigo falcon
20:12rodrigo was a argentinian male who been living in avimor for a year or so he'd been on a night out with
20:23friends left the nightclub at closing time and it was the last time he was seen by his friends
20:32that night it was minus 10 and snowing so a major police search was launched to try and find him
20:40rodrigo was considered high risk from the outset particularly given the weather conditions the
20:47sub-zero temperatures we do know he was a very popular and outgoing individual and he enjoyed
20:56going to house parties after the pub so one theory is that he was potentially trying to visit friends who
21:03live on the outskirts of avimor in that direction you do have a massive area to try and search it really
21:12is looking for a needle in a haystack despite a huge police effort rodrigo was never found perhaps until now
21:22you know i'm expecting the outcome of this to be that it is rodrigo i'm not anticipating it being
21:32anyone else but we never assume that our kind of hypothesis is correct um you know we'll do everything
21:39we can to check and it's not impossible that it could be someone else you have to be open-minded to that
21:45if these are rodrigo's remains the next question joe needs to answer is how and why did he come to be
21:54in such a remote location and could anyone else have been involved kind of working assumption would
22:00be that the remains have been here since kind of december 2022 when rodrigo went missing
22:07obviously if there was information the the remains have ended up there a period of time after rodrigo
22:16disappeared then i'll bring a whole new kind of angle to the inquiry and there's a lot of questions
22:22we would need to find answers to you can see over there on the other side of the valley and the trees
22:31you can see you can see the police type that's where the remains are with joe today is crime scene
22:38examiner matthew mcleod it's his job to thoroughly photograph the area so other forensic specialists
22:45can assess it and make a plan for how to remove the body given the terrain we've got what's called the
22:52police mountain rescue team and they specialize in recovering living and deceased persons from
22:57challenging locations all right let's give it a go
23:08descending the gorge
23:12crossing the burn at the bottom
23:20and climbing up the other side to where the remains have been found
23:23it proves tough going
23:32having come down here now i i
23:36can't see how someone could have successfully made their way from where we left the vehicles to here
23:43and then further up there this would be quite a mission to get through here in the dark it's hard
23:48enough in the daylight after a steep climb up the far side of the gorge the team reached the spot
23:58where the body is lying half hidden in a hollow in the heather that is a huge piece of luck
24:06he's been found and i think in a year's time he'd be covered over by moss
24:10even if you know if he was wearing a green jumper yeah he wouldn't have been seen
24:15key to identifying who this is are the clothes that are with the remains
24:21we know from speaking to his friends and the ccv footage from the nightclub that when he left he
24:26was wearing a red jumper jeans and he was wearing his argentina football shirt
24:32if that wasn't a red jumper if that was a green jumper or a brown jumper you wouldn't even notice it
24:40from here that is an argentina shirt doesn't it does look like it are you okay with moving just a
24:50little bit of grass yeah yeah if this is rodrigo it's still far from clear how he came to be here
24:59and how he died and there are other questions relating to his clothes or the lack of them
25:06we know rodrigo was wearing jeans when he when he went missing there's no
25:11there's no sign of that my bag up i'm happy with him okay i think
25:19my confidence remains the same that it is rodrigo but with the the same caveat that the further kind
25:25of investigations and and tests would be required to to confirm that
25:32it's pure luck or coincidence that the chap who found him yesterday happened to be in that area
25:38he was on a quad bike so if he'd been in a slightly different direction he would have never seen the
25:44red jumper never stopped never got off his quad so when people are lost in these very remote places it's
25:50it's it's just sometimes a a lucky coincidence that results in them being found there's nothing more
25:59joe and the team can do today with the scene secured they'll return tomorrow with forensic specialists
26:06and the mountain rescue team they still need to confirm that this is rodrigo and solve the mystery of how
26:13he died
26:25in inverness ashley and his colleague duncan are waiting at the house of a suspected drug dealer
26:31for a search warrant to be granted
26:35getting hungry for three and a half hours they have been unable to search for drugs
26:41while they wait at the front door there seems to be a disturbance at the back
26:47she's not holding her from the police you guys okay though
26:50ah you're sound right this man is known to duncan and ashley
26:58nobody got it here
27:01right take care of yourself see you later
27:04uh generally the information is that instead of using the front door where everyone sees
27:12for people to come and go from the general trend is that people go around the back to get their drugs
27:19who knows
27:23there are signs suggesting the householders are involved in drug dealing but the police still need
27:28concrete evidence and without the search warrant they can't look for it
27:37hello ashley speaking finally ashley gets the call he's been waiting for
27:43yeah that's fine cheers bye so that's us got the
27:47warrant from the sheriff so now we can search the address
27:54just watch your fingers for needles ashley there's any needles around
27:59do you want to do the honors or will i
28:03small wad of cash
28:05they are looking for drugs and any equipment associated with the drugs trade
28:10just being methodical and trying to think where people might put things that they don't need to
28:18find you know it isn't long before they find some tell-tale signs of drug dealing
28:24just having a look in here to see if there's any tick lists or any any notations that might indicate
28:30drug supply we've got a bit of cash there mobile phones tinfoil
28:35no yeah scales there actually yeah but there is a substance on there that suspect that might be
28:41cocaine because it's white so we'll test that back at the police station and see if it indicates
28:46positive for cocaine which i suspect it will and the notes scattered around the house there's some
28:52more potentially incriminating evidence here look three b plus one w two brown plus one so we'll see
29:00it's that users of drugs will refer to drugs by different slangs crack cane will be referred to
29:06as w or white and heroin referred to as brown or b so this here would suggest that the occupants
29:15may be keeping notes of what she's dishing out or what's being ordered and what she needs to run to
29:20the customers out on the street so that's quite useful evidence
29:23what do you reckon is that 350 bits hi 350 bits bits is a slang word is used by dealers in the
29:41emmeriss area to describe deals so we'll we'll seize that they've found some incriminating material
29:49as well as some unusual items i mean i've heard of disguises but i mean come on surely no
30:02okay that's us then
30:09well we started our shift at 7am this morning
30:12it's now 25 to 11 pm and we've just cleared the address ashley and duncan have been on the go for
30:2315 hours their search has revealed drugs paraphernalia but no drugs
30:30they're heading back to the police station we will need to count the cash that we've seized it's still a
30:35good result but one of the women who was arrested earlier that day was found to be in possession of
30:43synthetic heroin the drug wreaking havoc on the streets of inverness we definitely did make the
30:51right decision to go into the house we seized a quantity of controlled drugs which were the drugs
30:57that were killing people and we've taken them off the streets we would never be able to confirm it
31:02but potentially saved lives doing it
31:24ds joe newson is investigating missing person rodrigo falcon who vanished 16 months ago
31:32a body has been found on a hill with clothing that seems to match rodrigo's now joe needs to piece
31:39together his final movements and try to explain how and why he ended up in such a remote spot
31:48so this is alveymore the vault nightclub is around about here so cctv from the nightclub and from an
31:58indian takeaway shows rodrigo walking south through the town towards the kind of end end of alveymore
32:06we don't know where rodrigo was heading that morning it's in the middle of winter so it was a
32:10very cold night there was lots of snow uh sub-zero temperatures and in the the early hours of the
32:17morning he's walked south out of the town of alveymore and that's the last sighting of him on cctv
32:24the next sighting is is here which is the side of the a9 a gritter driver saw a male slight build dark
32:34bushy hair and wearing a red jumper or coat which we believe was rodrigo walking through the trees
32:42alongside the road police officers attended and found footsteps in the snow they followed the
32:47footprints which carried alongside the road down as far as here and the the footsteps that was lost
32:54at that point which is about two kilometers or less as the crow flies from the site where these
33:01remains have been found that night there was quite thick snow on the ground we had a drink that night we
33:08know that perhaps the cumulative effects of cold and alcohol and perhaps being a bit disorientated
33:15on a dark night he's simply you know lost his way and then has become even more disorientated and
33:21ended up on the the hillside where he was ultimately found so far all the evidence points to this being
33:29rodrigo's body on the hill and his death being a tragic accident but joe and his colleagues can take
33:36nothing for granted they need to establish exactly how rodrigo died in order to definitively rule out
33:43foul play i think anyone can empathize with rodrigo's family and friends and hopefully we can provide
33:51some closure to his friends and family that will kind of help them with that grieving process
34:06the next day the operation enters its most critical phase first the body will be examined where it lies
34:21by forensic scientists then it will be carefully retrieved by the police scotland mountain rescue team
34:29led by matt smith for matt it's a sad end to a story he's been involved with since the start
34:39we played a quite significant part in the search effort at the time when somebody's found you immediately
34:45start thinking in your own head did we miss something should we have been somewhere
34:50but people when they're missing they tend to follow tracks or trails or they tend to have a really good
34:57reason to to find themselves somewhere this location is just a place that we probably wouldn't have considered
35:10joe is also on scene again today to oversee the specialist teams today the whole purpose of the
35:16investigation is try and piece together as far as we can what happened after rodrigo left avimor
35:24how has he got here from there and what routes could he have taken are you ready yes yeah assembled
35:33the teams can make their way to the spot where the body lies the key experts in a case like this
35:39are forensic anthropologists by examining bodies where they are found they can often work out
35:46the likely cause of death from what the anthropologists have found so far it's just an initial
35:51assessment but it appears that the remains are intact okay and including the footwear no he's not
35:58got his socks on he's not got shoes on and he's not got his jeans on okay the fact that the limbs that
36:03were in those are still there but they're not means that they've been taken off by him in cases of
36:12hypothermia it's common for people to become confused and start removing their clothes in the belief
36:18they are too hot when people are in the hypothermic condition they're not what they think is happening
36:24is not does not reflect the reality so that clothing could be a kilometer away yeah it could be
36:30yeah um and in any direction they could have been right next to him and then snow melt over to winters
36:38has taken it down to the river and where's it gone from there after looking at the position of the
36:45body the forensic anthropologists are reaching some conclusions about the likely cause of death
36:51what you tend to find is that they'll pull their hand in and they'll they'll go to back right but
36:57face down so if they were sleeping fetal position you'd be on the side yeah okay put your knees tucked
37:01up yeah but if his knees have been underneath him right and his hands have been up that's more
37:08a digging okay all right the anthropologists can look at the position of the bones and from that
37:13make an assessment of the body position of the person when they came to rest if someone's suffering
37:20with hypothermia the body position that is quite different to the position of someone lying down
37:26to go to sleep this behavior where people with hypothermia tuck themselves into the ground
37:32is called hypothermic or terminal burrowing we can't say with absolute certainty but what
37:38we're seeing is consistent with hypothermic burrowing but obviously we'll look to confirm some
37:44of these things with all the scientific and forensic tests that are done at the laboratory
37:48right it's hard to say what the last few minutes or moments of rodrigo's life would have been like
37:56for him we're fairly sure he would have been disorientated for various reasons but primarily
38:06probably through hypothermia i'm no expert but my understanding is that compared to some other
38:11ways people die someone just kind of slips away so i like to think there's maybe some comfort to be taken
38:22from the thought that his probably his final moments may have been quite peaceful
38:32it's finally time to lift the body carefully from where it lies and carry off the hillside
38:41i think you're never going to rest when your loved one's missing in the mountains
38:48but ultimately it's actually a rather positive day to be able to to know that at the end of that day
38:55they've been found and the family can start that process of grieving is so important
39:09it's invariably a tragedy when a body is found but we do what we can to try and get answers for
39:20family and friends as to what's happened and hope that that helps them kind of work through their grief
39:36in inverness it's a hot and sunny bank holiday are you all right pc siobhan cooper is on patrol in the city
39:57center i'm having a good day are you having a good day that's good siobhan's family is steeped in highland
40:06policing my dad joined the police when i was four years old so it's something i've always kind of
40:12been a part of cctv police one i had an uncle who was in traffic in inverness and then my auntie as well
40:21was in the police it's always been in the family and then when we grew up my brother then became
40:26interested in it as well as me he joined up literally the year before i joined yeah we're not
40:32far away i cover the city center of inverness it's a small team we're on foot patrol we don't have
40:39vehicles just to kind of show visibility speak with shop owners security and just provide that sort of
40:45extra bit of policing in the center stop it all of you need to go you're going as well if not you're
40:57going to get lifted i don't care the warm weather has brought dozens of teenagers onto the streets
41:03and some are out to cause trouble kids are off school there doesn't seem to be much for them to do
41:09they get bored they come to the city center and they cause a lot of issues like their attitudes
41:15towards police can be pretty shocking sometimes it's really difficult dealing with kids the threshold
41:22for arresting them taking them into custody is so high but they know that too so they will run away
41:28from us commit crime expecting that there's no repercussions anymore and because they know that
41:33i just think it's like a vicious cycle it's it's just getting worse and worse cctv police one
41:40siobhan and her colleague sam are on the hunt for suspected thieves yeah we're not far away
41:49some teenage boys were spotted stealing alcohol from a supermarket
41:57cctv cameras have tracked two of them down to this alleyway i'm not chasing you you're not getting
42:04arrested okay okay come speak to me then come speak to me well show us then one boy resists siobhan's
42:13attempts to search him i look at every person as an unknown risk and anybody on that street could
42:30harm me settle down i'm so do you want the jail well then i suggest you pipe down right now search me
42:39you're walking around the streets you don't know who you're going to be stopping
42:42so yeah you do feel vulnerable can you keep all them and take a seat while the officers were busy
42:48restraining one of the suspects the other boy got away leaving the angry teenager with her colleague
42:55siobhan's got no choice but to try and pursue him by herself yeah where's the male run
43:00oh okay you will encounter at some point a child being cheeky to you and abusive
43:13they will shout at us they will assault us everything you do go home sometimes battered and bruised
43:21attempting to make an arrest always has the potential to lead to violence
43:27something siobhan experienced when she was assaulted on the job six years ago
43:35i went into work that day and then i went away from work in the back of an ambulance to hospital
43:42i was dealing with a individual um i'd already dealt with the day before
43:51and i've then gone to arrest him for threatening or abusive behavior and on doing so he's just gone
43:56from zero to a hundred he has um tried to punch me and then he's got me in a chokehold
44:05i didn't know if he was gonna kill me
44:16his hands were like in my eye he was strangling me and he just wouldn't get off me his strength
44:21was ridiculous there was three grown men trying to get him off me and they couldn't
44:25um and then basically pulled a big clump of hair up my head all i remember is just going to hospital
44:30and i couldn't see i thought he'd take my eye out at that point so it's just a fear of like being blind
44:41it took siobhan months to recover from her injuries both physical and psychological
44:49so i had to work through a lot of stuff like mentally after that
44:52but i think that was probably the point in my career where i did seriously consider whether it
44:58was worth it or not it was like kind of do i go back do i not is it worth it
45:07you haven't seen two young lads run in here have you no
45:11like yeah okay he battered me he did seriously injure me my eyesight was wrecked because of it and i
45:22could sit there for the rest of my life and be angry at him and annoyed but then i just kind of turned
45:29on its side and i was like you know what it could be worse i could be blind you know he could kill me
45:34he didn't i'm still here i love my job i'm not going to let him stop me from liking my job
45:40and i think i just got that fight back
45:42hmm
45:54yeah the other male that was passed off alcohol too is probably wearing the beanie hat with white logo
45:59siobhan moves on to help a colleague who has now stopped a third suspect you just show me
46:06someone's been past drink we're just trying to work out who it is but when they search him for the
46:11stolen alcohol they come up empty-handed the alcohol has been passed on um before we've managed to get
46:18a hold of it
46:2880 miles to the southwest siobhan's brother stephen is on patrolling glencoe
46:34it's a very different environment from inverness unlike his sister stephen's chosen to stay in the
46:45glens where they both grew up i mean as a kid you couldn't hope for a better place to grow up i don't
46:51think because you've just got freedom to do what you want to when you want to might be a bit boring
46:55at times when it's wet and the weather's horrible but when the weather's nice you've got a big playground
46:59in nature haven't you
47:03so i've lived in this area from a very young age like
47:06seven years old i think i don't see myself leaving here
47:10i'm still happy i'm still enthusiastic i still enjoy the job so i don't
47:14really see any need to go anywhere else
47:17in summer glencoe attracts tourists from all over the world it's narrow roads fill up with traffic
47:24today it's sunny and warm and the roads are busier than ever
47:30these roads were designed for cattle carts years and years and years ago before cars were even a
47:34thing they've obviously been modernized and improved since then but there's only so much you can do when
47:39with the width of them steven's on his way to help some stranded tourists
47:47spotted what looked like possibly a higher car in a ditch it just looked like it had gone too far over and
47:52just fallen in a little bit a lot of people have never experienced a single track road before
47:57they've come to scotland so they don't know what they're doing with it and underestimate the
48:01ditches at the side and drive into them i think this is where this car is in the ditch
48:09steven's been beaten to the scene by a group of good samaritans do you think it's beached or is it all
48:15right thanks yeah is it i think so yeah
48:23it's on the axles there's no way you're doing that without a winch i don't think
48:26no no no i do but not without i wouldn't do it without a winch
48:30the stricken drivers are a young couple from new york enjoying a scottish holiday with their baby
48:36the dad says he was forced into the ditch by a passing lorry
48:41lorry came did not even wait there and made us push inside right okay
48:48see i'm worried as well if i pull you with this it might go in further
48:51and make your situation worse right i'll try and get this my car out of the way a little bit so we
48:55can get the road moving
48:58steven's first priority is to keep the traffic flowing
49:02i'm trying to think how this is going to work uh traffic management wise when the recovery gets
49:12here the road will be shot so um our biggest danger is going to be the sail back into the main road
49:17the a82 through glencoe is one of the main arteries to the north of scotland and attracts fast moving
49:24traffic if a queue of cars backs up onto the main road steven's worried it could cause a serious accident
49:32in an ideal world there'd be two of us one down there somewhere at a passing place and me up here
49:36at this passing place um but unfortunately the world's not ideal and it's just me so i'm just
49:42gonna have to try and manage it as best i can um it's gonna get interesting when we try and open
49:47the road again and everything's got to try and pass on the single track
49:51troll three two whiskey it's time to radio for a car removal team
49:56i'm looking to arrange recovery for a vehicle causing obstruction if possible please
49:59so i've asked for the recovery to come and so they make that phone call now it'll be soon they're
50:10just close by and they'll drag you out no problem at all regards the truck kind of forcing you off
50:17did you get the registration of the truck or anything no i'm afraid there's not very much
50:20we can do about that and it's it's a hazard of these roads unfortunately so i'm very sorry
50:25doing like we are used to driving on the right hand side so now driving on the left was first
50:30challenge and the single single lane drives are fun you need to be always on the lookout
50:38won't be long now they're just leaving the yard which is 10-15 minutes tops so
50:43how old is she she's older than 10 months tomorrow all right i think that i most enjoy about being a
50:51police officer is helping people dad joined the police when i was very young and i saw the job he
50:57did so when i finished school and i was presented with the option of going to university or joining the
51:02police i just decided that the police was the better option and haven't looked back since
51:07that's uh the recovery guys on scene now they're just reversing to the car to try and pull it out
51:19is that all right there colin
51:23it's not in too far but i didn't want to try and drag it out myself
51:26just caused more damage than you'd solve so the local car recovery team a father and son duo
51:33colin and mark hey mark we'll put the rope out we'll put a snatch to this corner here
51:43so it can only come towards you that way it can't run along the ditch you know he's got 50 years
51:49experience i've only got 14. you should see us when we argue it is a very close-knit community and it's
51:59great to have that pro-police support because it's probably not for cities it's totally alien i would
52:04imagine but it's brilliant okay dad
52:14at last the car is freed as easy as that if only all the recoveries were that easy it would be an easy
52:21job you come with me we'll go down to the garage you jump in the lorry thank you so much
52:27not a problem at all thanks guys
52:33control three two whiskey
52:36yeah that's me clear that vehicle off the road it's been recovered and road reopened
52:42it feels quite good getting them out of the ditch and stuff i know they're going to get a bill for
52:45the recovery and things like that now but it's better than a ruined holiday so it's good that they
52:50can carry on with their journey
53:00in inverness steven's sister siobhan has managed to find some of the alcohol that was stolen from a shop
53:07along with another of the suspected thieves hello hi it's the police sorry your son
53:22he's under 16 so rather than arrest him siobhan's attempting a different strategy
53:28and calling his mum sorry my radio was going there he's been caught at the co-op stealing alcohol
53:34we've not managed to recover them all because they've tried to hide them from us um so
53:39yeah it's kind of gone too far now i can tell a lot by how their parents are when i phone them and
53:46tell them they've just stolen this that and the other from this shop and then if they don't react
53:51then i then i worry because i think well like if that was my mum or dad getting a phone call when i
53:57was that age like i'd be terrified on this occasion siobhan's reassured that the boy's mother is taking
54:06the matter seriously but it's not long before the peace is shattered again is that the same group of
54:19males we've been dealing with yeah so the males are now having a fight on falcon square it's probably
54:28alcohol-fueled again the alcohol they've probably stolen so more than just a police fight
54:39who's that idiot enough is he a soldier yeah he slapped me on my phone cctv police one have you got
54:47eyes on yeah what's our location now eight two seven five three five
55:04move
55:07they eventually managed to catch the boy it's another of the alcohol thieves who they already
55:12stopped and searched earlier in the day what is your problem doesn't mean you can start punching
55:19folk i'm not getting lifted for this i'm not doing anything if it was an adult we'd be arresting them
55:25for a threatening abusive behavior i understand that they are a child and that's like the last place
55:29they should really be right who's your who's at home give us your details you're not in charge here
55:38right enough enough enough we're gonna cut the attitude running out of options siobhan calls
55:46a custody sergeant for advice he's only 15 so you know the protocol is we shouldn't really be
55:53arresting him but he's being very abusive to us and he's assaulted somebody else in falcon square
55:58and he's stolen alcohol so he's now threatening to break our faces yeah yeah okay thanks cheers
56:16right you're under arrest for threatening abusive behavior okay do you understand that
56:20yeah i'm so sorry nah too late mate too late too late too late i don't care i should have thought
56:26about that i'm really sorry i don't know what you did i have got to the point where i have had to
56:31arrest them and take them into custody where they do get a few hours in a cell and i've noticed even
56:36that on its own has sort of had an effect in a good way and made them realize that there you know
56:41there is repercussions to their actions but as i say it's it doesn't happen often too late mate too late
56:48you can't get away with talking to us like that you can't get away with treating people like that
56:55you've sobered up now though haven't you
57:02i'm getting this abuse sometimes you're being assaulted it's seeing the end result and if you're
57:08getting one person off the street and making that street a bit safer for everyone else then it's like
57:14you've done your job i've been drinking but beer vodka wine but fast all right let's go down to the cell number
57:2219.
57:37Please, please!
58:07Next time, police close in on a man who has evaded them for almost a year.
58:15That's his campsite as described.
58:18Human remains are found in one of the most remote parts of the Highlands.
58:22It's bringing up more questions than answers.
58:26And police deal with a serious collision on one of Scotland's deadliest roads.
58:32There are quite a few people in that vehicle, so I hope they'll be OK.
58:36We'll see you next time.
59:06.
59:08.
59:10.
