00:00Find the wheel of a classic car.
00:01Here we go.
00:02Woo-hoo-hoo!
00:03And a goal to scar Britain for antiques.
00:06The aim?
00:07To make the biggest profit at auction.
00:09But it's no mean feat.
00:11There'll be worthy winners.
00:12I can't stop smiling.
00:14And valiant losers.
00:15Right, I retire.
00:16Will it be the high road to glory?
00:17Oh, look at that!
00:20Or the slow road to disaster?
00:22Oh.
00:23Oh, dear.
00:24This is Antiques Road Trip.
00:28Yeah.
00:30Once again, we are in the fabulous Northern Ireland.
00:35And we can expect plenty more daring do from our daring duo.
00:39Harper and Irvin are on it.
00:42Yes, little mini Brian, as named by our maestros, is off and running.
00:47And Rue and David are as agreeable as ever.
00:50Do you know what?
00:51We would never argue on anything, would we?
00:52Oh, never, Rue.
00:53We're completely on the same page.
00:56We are.
00:56Your page.
00:57No.
00:58Whoops!
00:58Yes.
00:59They will also have the equitable amount of £200 each to spend, of course.
01:04Ireland is known for its fabulous hospitality.
01:07Yes.
01:08The rolling green hills, the good luck.
01:10Not to mention all the excellent antiquaries.
01:14Rue from Scotland is a dealer with her eye on the main chance.
01:18I think I'm definitely going to go.
01:22And the good luck is going to go.
01:23And it's going to go.
01:24It's going to go.
01:25And it's going to go.
01:26Yeah.
01:27bottle when he sees one oh my goodness me and so on their first trip to the
01:35cell room it was he who took the spoils 320 pounds yeah thank you very much
01:42right thus David leads 1-0 in our best of five with a very very long wait still
01:47to go oh you can call it lucky if you want oh the luck of the Irish was on
01:53your side my grandmother came through well done granny Mary they started out in
02:00Londonderry and today we'll visit Belfast before heading to Rue's Bonnie
02:05Scotland David's Merry England and Shirley Bassey's Wales there was a girl
02:11called Rue she didn't half love a good show oh yeah needs work but their
02:17destination is where just outside of Ballyclerc which almost 80 years ago
02:24hosted a Formula One motor race and look down there because here comes our early
02:31leader in racing green having deposited her co-driver she's no doubt keen to get
02:38rummaging at Bridgend Antiques hello hey Rue pleased to meet you that was Hector by the
02:45way and this is very much his house style 200 pounds to spend remember you know
02:57sometimes you go into an antique shop and you see things you think oh that's nice
03:00but I tell you all looking at this my heart is just absolutely racing so this
03:06is a Victorian post green but by far the most beautiful I've ever seen and I'm a
03:12lover of peacocks and this one next to it is a Regency post green but what are they
03:18so these at face level allowed them to get the warmth from the fire but protect and
03:25shield their face from that raging heat especially useful at dances and parties
03:30now let's have a look at the price one seven five I only have 200 pound we
03:36know but I love it I'm gonna keep looking but it would break my heart if I could
03:41not take this to auction because I have fallen hook line and sinker in love with
03:46it crikey let's leave her on the horns of that particular dilemma and find out
03:52where David's got to close to the shore of Loch Ney in Ballinderi oh here he comes
03:58look not that he's exactly hard to spot of course although once inside this huge
04:03establishment it could be a very different matter oh my goodness gracious me it goes all the way back
04:12and down there and down that oh well at least you'll have Christine as his trusty guide she waves a flag that
04:21one pretty pretty pretty very pretty also he has 200 pounds of course oh I say now that is a handy
04:37little thing it is a letter opener not used very often these days this was made in China for the
04:45Western market it's cast in two parts you've got a very flexible blade there for slicing open the
04:52paper lots of strength but lots of movement and then the handle is absolutely lovely so it depicts
04:59carp representing in Chinese culture power strength tenacity made of brass 34 pounds and then down the
05:08blade you've got a little bit of foliate design finished with a little gentle butterfly it's a
05:14power and strength in the handle and a little bit of love and gentleness the tip it is such a good
05:22quality little thing and it's a real antique so I'm not gonna leave it here I don't put it on the
05:27counter while I look around and we'll shout cut and pick up back in Ballyclare where Rue has this
05:34rather budget straining screen under serious consideration there's plenty else besides though
05:41treasure upon treasure exactly with Hector on hand should there be deal talk I have a soft spot for
05:50vases especially when there's a pair of them and these are Japanese clazoni work on the body of the vase
05:57the design is drawn out with these fine wires of metal either gold silver or brass and then the
06:04enamel is filled into these tiny little compartments to make up the design but these are not like the
06:11normal clazoni vases you see all right usually a tad brighter and much more ornate 78 pounds for the pair
06:18there's a clazoni loving crowd out there that are ready to spend Rue has expensive tastes today still
06:26contemplating that 175 pound pole screen these silver trees are stunning but way outside of my
06:35budget but this is what's caught my eye this isn't particularly standout you see it on every
06:43dressing table with the perfume bottles the hairpin holders the cut glass and the crystal but this is a
06:50hair pot it was made as a part of a dressing table set now this is 1925 so it's late art deco cut glass let's check the
07:01condition looks good signs of wear but the silver there's one little dent on there but you know what that's to be
07:10expected this seems to have held its own considering is oh exactly a hundred years old happy birthday pot
07:1734 pounds that could be a nice little buy but it all adds up to 287
07:23Hector oh do you know what makes me really happy a gong that's a good load one I think you have his
07:35attention I found three things okay one is the peacock fire screen and then you've also got a pair of
07:42clothes on the vases are 78 and then this little chap at 34 so I don't know if you're team Rue or team David
07:50or Tim David are you no I'm not don't do that to me he's a tease the pole screen especially I mean I know it's
08:01a big ask but if you don't ask but if you don't ask you don't get looks apprehensive I was thinking
08:06rock bottom 80 okay go on ahead 80 quid yeah 80 quid okay the clothes on a vases could they be 40 ish
08:2050 45 okay and then your hair tidy here at 34 could that just be a nice friend 20 the death on it no
08:36bargaining okay 20 quid okay done 145 in total with 140 be cheeky yes it would go on ahead 140
08:48Hector you are such a good man Trojan I'd say making the screen 80 the vases 40 and the pot 20 pounds
08:59cheeky doesn't cover it and so with goods to be collected later and 60 pounds left over Rue is
09:06departing from Bally Claire and we'll catch up with David last seen taking a shine to a bit of brass
09:13oh I like that so looks like maybe a picture frame but it isn't it's a pocket watch stand and
09:26fortunately we do have a pocket watch so I can demonstrate because when this was made pocket
09:31watches were a necessity it's well before the invention of the wrist watch late Victorian by the
09:38looks of it and if he had something about you you would always put your pocket watch in its specific
09:44pocket watch stand and therefore creating a lovely little mantle clock isn't that gorgeous okay 68 pounds
09:56now is there a market for pocket watch stands well yes it's a very big yes let's add it to the list
10:03and anything else oh he's nice oh don't you think he's nice in miniature door knocker he's bronze but
10:15look at the way he's worn down the Durham Cathedral has a great big bronze knocker that looks remarkably
10:24like this character David's County Durham resident of course it's called the sanctuary knocker because if
10:30you were a criminal running through the streets of Durham if you got to the Durham Cathedral main
10:37door and grabbed hold of the sanctuary knocker and screamed sanctuary the crowd behind you legally were
10:46unable to touch you well not for 37 days at least no ticket price on that one he is gorgeous and for the
10:55right money I'll have it now Christine is definitely around here somewhere okay I've got three objects
11:03lovely letter opener that could be 30 going to be 20 no no we might go 28 28 so we've got the pocket watch
11:15stand our very best as 55 right yes the bronze door knocker lovely is he cheap and cheerful I'll do him for 20 20s far
11:27that's fine that's great not half another triple purchase 103 in total with 97 left over I've never bought so
11:37much bronze in my life back in Bryan our trippers are together once again and about to take a brief break
11:43from their relentless acquisition of fine antiques have you ever been to belfast before I have very
11:51exciting city beautiful and is vibrant well if David's got his directions right that's exactly where
11:58you're heading Northern Ireland's capital which is rightly famed for its rich maritime history as both a port
12:06and a shipyard in which capacity it once contributed almost 10 percent of the world output including
12:14several great ocean liners one of the many attractions of the waterfront regeneration is a piece of Victorian
12:22seafaring history which although almost 140 years old only arrived here in Belfast in 2015
12:29that's it eh the great light wow Rue and David are about to find out more from Kerry Sweeney of the
12:39Belfast Maritime Trust hello hi I'm David nice to meet you I'm Rue and welcome to the great light
12:47what is the great light it's one of the largest ever lighthouse optics to be built and it's seven
12:54meters tall it's three meters wide and it weighs 10 tons are we loud in yes follow me although the
13:01light no longer fulfills its original purpose it seems fitting that it now occupies a place on the
13:07iconic Belfast waterfront close to where the SS Titanic was constructed when was actually built this
13:14was built in 1887 in Paris and then it was in a lighthouse off the coast of Donegal Torrey Island up
13:24until 1924 and then they dismantled it and it went on to another lighthouse called New Island and then
13:32from New Island we rescued it when it was being replaced with an LED and how did you get it from
13:37its last location to here it took a helicopter and two boats and a huge crane we had to dismantle it
13:46into hundreds of pieces oh and then rebuild it lighthouses like this one in Alexandria one of the
13:53world's seven wonders have existed since ancient times during the 19th century the introduction of a
13:59revolutionary lens thanks to French physicist Augustin Jean Fresnel extended the beams of light much further
14:07out to sea making lighthouses dramatically more effective how many are there in existence and
14:15where are they there was only every 30 of them made and you had different grades but this was the
14:22largest you would ever get and they were on landfall sites on the edge of the world directing the
14:28shipping across those massive oceans in the worst of weather as well and that was their job one of
14:36those still in use is the Cape Race lighthouse in Canada which in 1912 received the Titanic's distress
14:44call okay I think we can let you pop up and have a look oh I say how very exciting one at a time though
14:51please oh ladders and me are not a good combination especially wearing a cape oh my goodness I'm a good shower
15:00singer but the acoustics are better up here I'll let you have a look of course aside from impressing
15:05school children and antiques experts the great light does still have plenty of uses can you change
15:11it different colors for different occasions yeah we do it all the time which one's your personal
15:16favorite on this I love pink pink I might be with you on that nice well that was a busy day lots of
15:26shopping followed by a heap of history sadly now when we think of Titanic we think of Rose and Jack
15:32I've never seen the movie have you never they found love despite their class differences well this is
15:39very much like us room so if we were floating on a door would you let me on the door oh absolutely you
15:44would you wouldn't even have to say sugar up brew night night next morning the teach yourself the
15:55local lingo classes are coming along nicely what's the crack is a good phrase but one I've been saying
16:02for years which I love is top of the morning to you that's lovely and you know in Northern Ireland she's
16:08looked after us hasn't she absolutely she had and they've also been helping themselves of course with
16:14David snaffling a paper knife a pocket watch stand and a miniature door knocker as you do he is gorgeous
16:21and for the right money we did and so has 97 pounds for today's purchases while Rue spent a bit more on a
16:30pair of cloisonne vases a dressing table pot and a Victorian pulse cream I have fallen hook line and
16:38sinker in love with it leaving just 60 pounds in her kitty not that a lack of cash is her only concern
16:45is my driving getting better or worse it's getting worse is that normal for once I agree with you well
16:53our Brian seems to be taking it in his stride their very next opportunity to buy will be back in
17:00Belfast close to those famous shipyards at the on the square emporium oh David I found my first buy
17:08look at these handsome boys I bagged them honestly you and cats wow oh this is going to be fun it's
17:18massive 1300 square meters actually which should give them plenty of room to spread out and not be
17:25stepping on each other's toes too much going once going twice for the third time
17:34excitable as ever oh now this makes me happy I love a globe because this is a snapshot of the world
17:47at that time and this is an example of an educational globe this is 1960s it is beautiful and if I look
17:55closely I am actually on the map well I am Rue but Rue is really Arusha and if you look here Tanzania
18:05this is a safari town called Arusha population just over 600,000 I love it the price is 165 pounds
18:14it's probably about right because globes are collectible but I'll keep looking for something
18:20I can afford to buy 60 pounds left remember Rue would you like to test your character personality
18:28and nature is there a machine that can handle all of that not been invented yet would you like your
18:35palm red or would you like your love tested oh my love tested here we go
18:40love that so
18:44what'll it be poor fish poor fish oh dear David's turn are you ready yes come on come on rich and
18:57famous lordy that won't be forgotten in a hurry although they really do need to press on
19:04and perhaps find something other than a fairground attraction very nice oh I do like that it's the
19:11bully beef tin can opener the famous bully beef in fact they made millions of these but what's
19:19fascinating about the tin can opener is that it was invented about 40 years after the invention of the
19:26tin can you really couldn't make it up could you so the tin can was invented in the early part of the
19:3119th century and the can was designed to transport of course food around the world but also gunpowder and
19:39crucially seeds it might take months to get there but if you sealed them in a tin can they were preserved
19:47perfectly but somebody had not thought about inventing a tin can opener do you know that the manufacturers
19:55recommended that the best way to open a tin can was using a hammer and a chisel or a bayonet
20:01so very practical works today as well as it did 150 years ago priced at 24 quid it's fine but it's not
20:12going to make much more so as much as I love him he's not going to auction no can do how's his chum getting on
20:21a lot of silver
20:23this is interesting now I've got 60 pound left not a huge amount of money so I'm looking for something
20:34small safe and affordable now you look at this you see so many of them in antique shops not
20:41particularly fashionable they're these silver little pin dishes often pierced work but I'm not sure if it's
20:49silver because it's saying 12 pound on the price tag but it looks like silver it's got the feel the
20:54sheen ah that's what you're looking for well spotted 12 pound not too exciting but you know what
21:02I think that could sell for 30 35 pound auction that has to be an easy profit now I'm looking for
21:10something to tie in with it this ring is appealing to me this is definitely mark a seat the smoky gray
21:18quartz type stone was huge in the 1920s and 30s very very art deco and here is a tiny little mark I'll
21:28tell you all my eyes are being tested today which looks like nine to five for American silver ticket price
21:3525 pounds do you know if I got that for say 12 14 pounds along with this that can be a bit of a
21:44no-brainer and leave me enough for the next shop I'm gonna go have a chat with the dealer and see what
21:49he thinks over to Stephen hello so I found this little pin dish and the ring now the pin dish is priced up
22:00at 12 and then we've got this ring American sterling silver price up at 25 I would love to buy the two
22:09and it comes to 37 could it be 20 for the pair do you know what since you're so nice let's go 20 pounds
22:17you're an angel done deal well that was all very amicable wish me luck at the auction good luck bye
22:23leaving 40 pounds for her last shot funds come out just in time which brings us back to David with 97
22:33still in hand oh that is a right up my street take a look at that feast your eyes wowzer so we've got
22:41this bronze coppered bowl with a very rough cut edge showing that it's all been done by hand made in
22:52the early part of the 20th century I would guess in North Africa can't quite work out what it was
22:58used for but look at the handles the handles are certainly not North African they are antique handles
23:06put on the North African bowl made in the early part of the 20th century that's interesting but it's
23:13not as interesting as the base it's a puzzle base let me explain I'll take the bowl off that is carved
23:21from one piece of wood this is how it works watch this
23:24that's why it's called a puzzle base the skill in that is remarkable those dogs heads are absolutely
23:36exquisite made of mahogany 98 pounds I want desperately to buy this I think I might be naughty
23:46if I bought it sell the bowl separately and then the base for a glass topped coffee table would be
23:54fantastic oh he does love a coffee table time to talk to Justin so North African table base a puzzle
24:02base yes priced at 98 I'm tight on money what are you going to hit me with 50 you squeeze me to 60 60
24:11you'll do fine thanks Justin great to see you as ever cheers thanks a lot just in time actually 37
24:20pounds still in hand looks pleased doesn't he but it's time now to find out where ruse got to in the
24:27county down destination of dromore the town where ballet dancer melissa hamilton took her first steps
24:36and the dainty tootsies of our expert are about to set foot in wrath house antiques and they'll
24:44definitely know she's arrived that's a welcome and a half just 40 pounds left to spend remember
24:54oh this is a very nice tazza which is the italian name for a dish like this little stem nice foot and
25:10you would put your bonbons your sweets your jellies in there it's quite an elegant shape and this could
25:16be uranium glass really popular in the 19th century made with uranium so under uv light it glows bright
25:24green but obviously as time went on there wasn't as much uranium in these let me have a look I think
25:30there's a torch here let's see it's almost like magic isn't it never fails to impress it's quite
25:39mesmerizing and the thing is it's very collectible no ticket though let's see what she sounds like
25:45that's a beautiful ring it also says that there's no cracks hey I'm starting to fall for this tenner
25:55would be amazing but I'm not sure I'll be that lucky well she could always consult shopkeeper Kevin
26:03but meanwhile back in Belfast her road trip mucker has just arrived at his last shop
26:09oh sounds impressed he has very little to boast about as far as the Harper wallet is concerned
26:18however just 37 pounds remaining perfect for the mini so there needs to be a bit of seeking at
26:28Belfast antiques and coins oh coins coins coins coins of course I mean you can go back thousands of
26:36years Roman Greek coins you can buy them for very little money 10 20 pounds for a good one oh now
26:43there is a worn out coin priced at 95 pounds oh just help yourself David if you just move it around in
26:50the light you can see the face of our most wonderful Queen Elizabeth the first and there she is she just
26:58kind of reveals herself in profile turn the coin over let's get a date so there's the Tudor coat of arms
27:06and there is the date 1562 and this is a sixpence made from silver struck
27:16quite early in her 45 year reign it's an amazing thing 95 pounds but in mint condition it would be worth
27:242,000 pounds but that just puts a smile on my face that is a lovely lovely thing he could just about
27:34afford half a sixpence what about ruin Dromor she's only a few pounds better off and has already taken a
27:42fancy to this unpriced uranium glass tatsa this is catching my eye first of all the shape it is very
27:53Arabic it reminds me of the minarets you get on top of the mosques you get Arabian oud pure flower musk
28:03and you would unscrew it let me have a look at the bottom oh that's interesting this is silver solid
28:14silver but it's golden color so this must be gold plate on silver and there's a tiny little a meaning
28:23it's Aspreys of London that is decadent oh that smells good sure to be pricey as well
28:33although Kevin okay this is beautiful yes do you know anything about this because I have a feeling
28:41this is pretty special well that was actually presented by the Sultan of Oman to his guests
28:47at one of his parties so it was so every one of his guests got a gold plate of silver Asprey scent
28:55bottle no price on it is it price on application with 300 pound would be that do you know that's
29:01what I said phony I had bigger pockets only 260 short maybe something not so spenny
29:09well to be fair every antique dealer has a magnifying glass we cannot survive in this business
29:19without one of these because you've got all these little hallmarks to look up but I've never seen a set
29:26of magnifying glasses before only ever one but you've got one two three four five six and as a lot
29:33to take to auction they're probably a good lot they don't have the value in terms of age they don't
29:40have the value in terms of material but people do buy magnifying glasses and not only that they're
29:47elegant look at them they hark back to the old world no label to be glimpsed on those however if
29:54it's a come get me price then I could be tempted they don't have the gravitas I need but they might
30:00have the price so we have a choice oh not again a good old toot toot horn I do need to get a hold of
30:08Kevin let's see if it works Kevin that was quick I spotted a couple of things your uranium glass
30:19tatsa yes then there's the set of six magnifying glasses yes no price on those so how much is the
30:27tatsa do you 25 for the tatsa 25 I was thinking around about the 15 mark I could make the middle of
30:3520 at 20 and the magnifying glasses out of interest 15 so for the sake of five pound it makes sense to
30:42go for the uranium glass 20 pounds it is then got cold feet about those magnifiers with 20 left unspent
30:52cheers to the winner but what about events in belfast where her chum is busily trying to find the best
31:00possible use for his last 37 pounds sorry billy you won't be getting rich just yet
31:10aye aye i hope this price ticket is correct
31:1635 pounds very realistically done grass snake i think so non-venomous so nothing to worry about
31:24hand-painted he's heavy he's cold he's bronze all of which means literally painted on top of the cast
31:33bronze and then not finished so layers and layers of paint built up on top of bronze and i absolutely
31:44recognize this model by Bergman a viennese foundry which produced such items in the early 20th century
31:54but it's only 35 pounds which tells me there's a bit of a problem going on here and i'm gonna search
32:03for the crucial b the mark of bergman and it is not there so although i've got to tell you that not
32:13every single piece of franz bergman bronze was marked so there is a chance that it is
32:22a bergman a slither of a chance bergman would be several hundreds of pounds this one even just
32:33looking a bit like a bergman has got to be worth substantially more than 35 quid
32:37not a shadow of a doubt billy what about a nice northern ireland snake look at that isn't he gorgeous
32:48the place is entirely free of real ones of course
32:50good thing 35 quid will 30 buy him yes yes fair enough billy you're a top man the snake is sold
33:02i'll see you again yes all right don't leave it too long i won't and with seven pounds left over
33:09his buying's all done i've got a very good feeling about this one he's currently my favorite
33:15so the next auction is fast approaching and they'll have to hop on a ferry and say goodbye to
33:22northern ireland soon but in the meanwhile who's feeling peckish have you ever had a curry sandwich
33:29i've never had a curry sandwich phenomenal i imagine if you made a curry sandwich
33:34it would be delicious sounds very nice then shut eye thank you
33:40back to bristol which just like rome is built on seven hills after thoroughly exploring ulster
33:51whilst also doing an awful lot of shopping they've once again traveled east towards the west country
33:57at auctioneer i mean hannan selling on the net on the phone and in the room
34:02with auctioneer rob dunnigan on the podium are we done now at 80 then screen's gone quiet
34:08fair warning can you believe we were putting ourselves through this again i know why do we do
34:13it good luck my friend thank you all very harmonious at the moment david spent 193 pounds on six auction
34:22lots because he's selling his bowl and his stand separately what does rob reckon on i really like the
34:28cold painted snake it's in franz bergman style and it should do well even though it's got no maker's
34:34marks to it rue parted with a bit less 180 for her five plots i really like the japanese vases just
34:42because they've got good colorway nice vibrant color and a lot of interest as well so it should do
34:47quite well on the hammer today well there's certainly a mighty crowd in here which should
34:51encourage our sellers i think you're going to perform a bit better this time you know my worry with
34:57you david you always buy one thing that just whoosh soars you think so yes i know you're confident i

38:44a very bad move on my behalf rue's dressing table pot got a hole in the middle so that when a lady was
38:52combing her hair back in 1925 all the loose hair would go inside attractive so nt is bid thank you

42:02you go with your gut instinct and sometimes it pays you're a star david started out with 200 pounds
42:08and after auction costs ended up with a small profit of two pounds and 30p while rue took her initial
42:15200 and also after auction costs made a very fine profit of 170 pounds and 84 pence so we are now on
