00:00Nicolas Sarkozy left prison on Monday afternoon, barely three weeks after he began serving a five-year sentence for a criminal scheme to finance his election campaign with Libyan fans.
00:13His release came shortly after a Paris Appeals Court ruled that he be freed and placed under judicial supervision.
00:20During the court session, Sarkozy spoke via videoconference from prison.
00:25French law provides that release should be the general rule pending appeal while detention should be reserved for those considered dangerous or at risk of fleeing to another country or to protect evidence or prevent pressure on witnesses.
00:40Sarkozy became the first former French head of state in modern times to be sent behind bars after his conviction on September 25th.
00:49He denies wrongdoing. He was jailed on October 21st pending appeal but immediately sought early release.
