00:00An economist has proposed the creation of a national endowment fund as a long-term mechanism to sustainably support the Bungi Pucha community.
00:11Barjoy Aybardai said all Malay reserve land, excess government land and portions of shares from government-led companies such as Kazana National, Temodala National Berhad, Equity National Berhad and state-owned enterprises should be channeled to such a fund.
00:27He said the endowment fund should be managed by professionals as it is done in Norway where the principle remains untouched and only the income is utilized.
00:37He was responding to concerns raised by the Malay Economic Action Council that the Malaysia-US reciprocal trade agreement could undermine affirmative action policies for Bungi Puchas.
00:48To balance Bungi Pucha protection with trade liberalization, Barjoy Aybardai proposed a dual-track approach that focuses on fairness while building competitiveness.
00:58Citing global examples, Barjoy Aybardai said several countries such as South Korea, Chile and Vietnam had managed to open their economies while protecting vulnerable groups.
01:11He added Malaysia could learn from these examples by creating a level playing field first, ensuring Bungi Pucha firms have the capacity and confidence to compete globally.
