00:00Welcome back to From the South. The United Nations has categorically stated that the

00:06attacks by the United States in the Caribbean and the Pacific constitute a violation of

00:14international human rights law. During the regular press briefing of the UN Secretary-General,

00:20his spokesperson, Farhan Haq, reiterated the opinion of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

00:26In this context, he has stated that the airstrikes in these operations violate international law,

00:32especially considering the aggravating factor that none of the people executed

00:37posed a threat to others. These attacks, openly supported by Venezuela's extreme opposition,

00:43have claimed the life of nearly 70 people, none of whom had the opportunity to prove their innocence.

00:54Well, on this, the Secretary-General supports the views of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk,

01:01who has made it clear that the airstrikes are in violation of international human rights law.

01:07According to the High Commissioner for Human Rights, based on the information that's been available so

01:13far, none of the individuals on the targeted boats appear to pose an imminent threat to the lives of

01:19others or otherwise justify the use of lethal armed force against them under international law.

01:26And, of course, we want to make sure that established law enforcement methods are used

01:32to deal with questions of illegal trafficking on the high seas. Stefano.
