EU's Kallas urges respect for international law over US narco-boat strikes

The EU's Kaja Kallas emphasised the need to follow international law on self-defence and UN mandates at the CELAC-EU summit in Colombia, amid continued US strikes on narco-boats.

00:01The EU's foreign policy chief, Kaya Callas, is attending a summit in Colombia
00:05overshadowed by U.S. military strikes in the region.
00:09Speaking at the event, Callas said the EU's position is to uphold international law
00:13where the use of force is only justified in self-defense or with a U.N. resolution.
00:18Under international law, you can use force only for two reasons,
00:23either self-defense or on the basis of U.N. Security Council resolution.
00:29The meeting between the EU and Latin American and Caribbean states
00:32has been marked by divisions over the U.S. operation targeting alleged drug-carrying vessels.
00:38According to the U.S. Defense Secretary, 14 strikes have killed 69 people on boats
00:43near Venezuela and in the Pacific since September.
00:47Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called the deaths extrajudicial executions.
00:52The relevance of the summit has also been questioned due to the absence of senior leaders,
00:57including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen whom Callas is representing.
