00:00In a dramatic training exercise at Concord Hospital, staff practiced their response to a potential Ebola outbreak.
00:09It all started when a patient reported fever and bleeding gums after travelling to Sierra Leone,
00:15a country currently experiencing an Ebola outbreak.
00:19That's a bit of a trigger. It's enough to trigger a response for a high-consequence infectious disease.
00:25The safe response included quarantining and activating strict infectious disease protocols.
00:31Health officials emphasize the importance of these drills, noting that while Australia has not yet experienced an Ebola case,
00:38preparedness is crucial given recent outbreaks in other countries.
00:42Key personnel in the incident control room determined that the patient required transfer to the West Med Hospital by a containment unit.
00:50Using advanced containment equipment, the mock patient was safely transported while connected to a vital monitor.
00:56It's a contained negative pressure unit, which allows the patient to be transported in a contained manner.
01:04The exercise aimed to ensure that the healthcare system is ready to respond effectively in the event of an actual emergency.
01:11Australia hasn't had any Ebola or Ebola-like illnesses imported to Australia yet,
01:17but cases have occurred imported to America, but also into Europe as well.
01:22So we must be prepared for the event that it occurs here.
01:25Several similar drills have been carried out in Sydney hospitals last month.
01:31With the outbreak of Ebola, Australia seems to be ready for another outbreak that include a COVID-19 scenario.
