01:00I took one of my tea cakes, put some ham in it and took a bite out of it and thought that tastes a bit weird.
01:14It's 8am and breakfast time at the Topcliffe Air Base near Thirsk and paramedic Andy is not having the best start to the day.
01:21I then took the tea cake out of my mouth and it had loads of mould on the bottom of it. I think I bit most of the mould off.
01:28Oh, yeah, look at that. Yeah, nice. Tasty, I could taste it as well. It tasted foisty.
01:37I didn't know what I wanted to make. What's foisty? I don't know. It's just a word I've learnt.
01:44But before Andy can finish his new breakfast, a job has come in.
01:49Don't forget your drugs. I've got them.
01:53A teenager has been found unconscious on a remote track in Upper Nidderdale.
01:58East of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
02:01Paramedic Stu is accompanying Andy and pilot Gary with technical crew member Claire are flying them the 20 miles.
02:09One time to stop.
02:11One time to stop.
02:12One time to stop.
02:14Call me ready, Stu. Go.
02:16Nine, nine.
02:17Lifted.
02:18Whoever looked to be okay.
02:20So, essentially, it's a biker that's been found by somebody. I don't know if it's police.
02:27Well, that or.
02:28Essentially, it might have major trauma.
02:29There's no roads where that grid is.
02:31No, it says it's in a remote location.
02:33No, there's actually no road at all.
02:36992SB desk.
02:38Paddy, 99, go ahead.
02:39The grid you've sent is in the middle of actually nowhere. Can you confirm it is that grid or the off-road bikes we're looking for?
02:46The Watsby word is confirmed that the location is next to Scar House Reservoir.
02:50Ah, that's where they'll be.
02:52Yeah, copy. That's where we've got it. It's about.
02:54I know where they'll be.
02:55500 metres to the south. They must be off-road bikes.
02:57It was an early morning call at Topcliffe to tell us that there was a patient that had been involved in an accident in the middle of nowhere, somewhere on the moors.
03:06The information that we received was that this patient may be unconscious and have some nasty injuries.
03:11It's a right drive to Harrogate from here.
03:13That's a blast.
03:14It reckons an hour and 28 minutes.
03:16Eh?
03:17And it reckons one hour and 56 to LGI.
03:20Have you set yours to walk in?
03:22With their patient over an hour away from the nearest major trauma centre by road,
03:26the helicopter could be vital to their patient's survival.
03:30Yeah, I've got a straight blowers now and a quad.
03:34Is it a quad?
03:35Yeah.
03:36It's an overturned quad.
03:38Hello, Ben.
03:39Now, that's us letting down at sea and I'll give you a call underground.
03:42So when we flew over the scene, we realised it wasn't a motorbike.
03:45It was actually a very large quad bike.
03:48So the things that you're thinking about now is that it's been ejected from this vehicle.
03:52So there's all kinds of injuries that it could have, ranging from head, chest, abdomen, pelvis,
03:56Okay, I'm going to go to the route right as I'm looking at it.
04:00Yeah, over the other side of that fence.
04:01Yeah.
04:02Just a bit slopey to the left, Gary, but you're all right with the disc.
04:06Just be mindful of it, guys, when we get out.
04:08Yeah.
04:09Element 99 on the ground.
04:20Hey up, guys.
04:21Hey, there, Randy.
04:22Get your two in quickly.
04:23How's he doing?
04:24It's not so bad.
04:25Steady, it's not so bad.
04:26It's about 20 minutes ago.
04:27Okay.
04:28Claire, get the school piece up, mate.
04:31What's his name?
04:32His name is Edward.
04:33Edward.
04:34Can you hear me, mate?
04:35You've got him now.
04:36Edward, it's Andy, one of the paramedics.
04:3918-year-old farmer Edward Suttle crashed his quad bike while riding home from a birthday
04:44party at around half past one this morning.
04:47He's been lying injured and alone on the moors for more than seven hours.
04:51What have you heard?
04:54Can you hear me?
04:54Don't shake your head.
04:55Open your eyes for me.
04:57Open your eyes.
04:59Open your eyes for me.
05:01Can you stick your tongue out?
05:03Stick your tongue out for me.
05:05Okay.
05:06He's been here for seven hours now.
05:07Ah, right, okay.
05:08He came back last night.
05:09Oh, but it's all.
05:10All right, okay.
05:11We've come and found him this morning.
05:11Okay.
05:12Right.
05:13Edward's family realised he was missing this morning and set out across the moor with
05:17friends and neighbours to look for him.
05:19On the weekend, he was sat up.
05:20He saw us and sat up, right?
05:22Okay.
05:23So he would suggest that he's back, you know.
05:25Okay.
05:25That's all I can tell you.
05:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:26We've been chatting a little bit.
05:29He's been asleep for probably 20 minutes.
05:30He's been talking for the past 10 minutes.
05:33He's not talking, can I?
05:34Nice.
05:35Right, mate, I think what we need to do, oxygen on, scoop him and get him on his way.
05:42The temperature through the night has been around nine degrees, cold enough to put Edward
05:47at risk of hypothermia, where prolonged exposure can slow the brain, weaken the heart
05:53and become life-threatening.
05:55So when I got to Edward, I was really concerned because his conscious level was low and there
06:00was blood on the floor.
06:01and the people with him had said he'd been there probably all night.
06:05On the moors at that time of morning, it was really, really cold and to be told that
06:08he's been out all night is really concerning, especially if he hasn't been moving.
06:13So you're thinking to yourself, is he unconscious because of the cold and hypothermia setting
06:18or is it because of a head injury or is it both?
06:21You got it?
06:22Get that scoop round here, mate.
06:24Yep.
06:24Right, guys.
06:25Yeah.
06:25What we're going to do is we're going to bring that stretcher round here.
06:28Yep.
06:28We're going to roll him onto his back and get him on his scoop stretcher.
06:31Yep, yep.
06:32Right, bring that round here.
06:33You move that way, fella.
06:34I'm on it rolling.
06:35Right.
06:36Well, let's get that off him so we can get to him.
06:38Yep.
06:38That's it.
06:39What injuries have you seen on him just like head?
06:41Yeah, and you see a big part of wood just out, rocks by a bit or it's hooked into it.
06:45OK.
06:46OK, mate.
06:46Edward.
06:47Edward Saul.
06:47Hold on.
06:48Edward, how are we doing, pal?
06:49It's the air ambulance.
06:51Can you tell us what's happened, bud?
06:54Hold his arm up there, fella.
06:56You've hit your head.
06:57Andy's cutting Edward's clothes so he can check for hidden injuries.
07:02So, eyes out open, mate.
07:03Can you squeeze me hand?
07:05Yep.
07:05Right, well done, mate.
07:06Well done, lad.
07:07Well done.
07:08All right.
07:08Right, guys.
07:09You got the scoop, mate?
07:09I've got the scoop.
07:10I've got these.
07:11Move that further up there and we're going to roll him over.
07:13There we go, Edward.
07:14All right.
07:15All right, fella.
07:16Oh, hell.
07:17All right.
07:18OK, mate.
07:18Oh, that's awful.
07:20What's hurting you?
07:21You're on the top of the scoop down now.
07:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:24So, just have a quick look.
07:25So, mate, is your chest hurting you?
07:28No, no.
07:29Just your head.
07:30Right.
07:31It's come round a bit anyway, which is the bruiser bones.
07:34Two at top, two middle.
07:36All happy.
07:37Right, on lift.
07:37On lift.
07:38Yeah, don't do it yet.
07:39On lift.
07:40Ready, steady.
07:41I knew with Edward being so poorly that we needed to move quickly.
07:45I did a very rapid primary survey and I could tell that he potentially had a nasty head
07:52injury and we didn't want to be messing about on scene.
07:55It was cold and I said to the team, we need to be away from here.
07:59We need to get him packaged in a flectalon, which is our big furthest sleeping bag, in the aircraft, out of the wind, out of the elements.
08:05Where's your head hurting you?
08:07Where's your head hurting you?
08:08Is it there?
08:09No, no, no.
08:10Is your back of your head hurting you?
08:12I've got this one.
08:13I've got this one.
08:14Where did you notice the cut?
08:15Just leave it there mate.
08:16Just exactly.
08:17Right, let's wrap him up.
08:19Get him what?
08:20Get him to turn off.
08:21Ready, steady, lift.
08:23It's really uneven.
08:24Just take your time guys, yeah?
08:26Yeah.
08:27Alright.
08:28Keep coming, we're in tracks.
08:30Keep coming.
08:31Keep coming.
08:32Locked.
08:33Hello, Feddy.
08:34How are you?
08:35How are we doing pal?
08:36Oh my.
08:39Can you remember it?
08:40No, I can't.
08:42What's the last thing you remember buddy?
08:44You alright Edward, buddy?
08:45Well done, well done.
08:47You don't know?
08:49So our eyes are one, verbal confused, motor response is six, so we've probably got a GCSE of 11.
08:58On the Glasgow Coma Scale, which measures consciousness, Edward's score is 11, consistent with a moderate brain injury.
09:06Pulse for 87, sat to 99.
09:08Air desk at Nostoe.
09:10Yeah, receiving, Andrew.
09:11We're just up on a job on the system up at Skard House.
09:15We've got a patient on the helicopter, we haven't got a phone signal.
09:18Would you be able to put a pre-alert in to the emergency department?
09:22Yeah, Roger.
09:23ETI please.
09:24Probably about a ten minute flight once we've lifted, mate.
09:29Yep, I'll do that.
09:30Engine's coming off.
09:31Yeah, cheers mate.
09:35Edward.
09:36It's going to get noisy, buddy.
09:3899.50.
09:39The regent's going to be forward and down.
09:43By road, it would take over an hour to reach Leeds General Infirmary.
09:48By helicopter, the journey takes just 12 minutes.
09:52So I think we've got a combo of hypothermia.
09:55Head injury.
09:56We've got reduced GCS, the exposure injury.
10:07Eddie?
10:08What's your date of birth, pal?
10:13He's confused.
10:14Yeah.
10:15Gonna slide you out, Edward.
10:16Alright, mate.
10:17Guys, just watch that left arm.
10:18Yeah.
10:19So all we've got is we've got his name.
10:20He's Edward Suttle.
10:21Out at a party last night.
10:22Last seen at about half past one.
10:23Leaving.
10:24Edward.
10:25Edward.
10:26Edward.
10:27Edward.
10:28Edward is being taken into resus, where Andy is handing him over to the emergency trauma
10:32team.
10:33This is Edward.
10:34At 8.18 today, we've had a call from some people that found Edward in a remote location
10:39at Skar House Reservoir.
10:40They believe he's been out there for about six hours.
10:41But essentially, from top to toe, we've identified head injury, swelling around the head.
10:44I'm not sure if there's any boggy sensations.
10:45Any questions?
10:46No.
10:47No.
10:48No.
10:49No.
10:50No.
10:51No.
10:52No.
10:53No.
10:54No.
10:55No.
10:56No.
10:57No.
10:59No.
11:00No.
11:01No.
11:02No.
11:03No.
11:04No.
11:05No.
11:06No.
11:07No.
11:08No.
11:09No.
11:10No.
11:11That's great.
11:12Thank you.
11:13Edward will be treated for hypothermia and taken for CT scans to assess the severity
11:17of his head injury.
11:18I like to look after the crew, but for heat of time.
11:34An RAF Topcliffe in the north of the county, it's mealtime, and paramedic Tammy's making
11:39for heaters.
11:41It's pretty much ready, guys.
11:43Cheers, Tammy.
11:44Thank you.
11:45Cheers, Tammy.
11:46Thank you.
11:47I feel like you learn a lot about people, about how they prepare their wraps.
11:50The crew have to take meal breaks when they can.
11:51The crew have to take meal breaks when they can.
11:53This is meant to be like your masterpiece.
11:54Yeah, I can't tell you.
11:55Well, they've finished shit right, tell you.
11:58But there's always a chance they'll be interrupted.
12:01Leanne is on the line from the air desk.
12:04Job.
12:05What we got, Leanne?
12:06No cyclists come off their bike, gone over a brick wall, both conscious and breathing,
12:11but one's got an open fracture.
12:13She's sending Tammy and paramedic Fiona to the motorbike accident 20 miles away in
12:18Stainburg, North Yorkshire.
12:20Oh, Skip's going to eat me dinner.
12:23We're all fine.
12:24Oh, thanks.
12:25We're all fine.
12:26No.
12:32Pleasure's down, clear area departure to the south and west.
12:35Clear left.
12:38No, no, listen.
12:40Oh, we're jolly well.
12:41You.
12:42Whereabouts is it?
12:44Brown Bank.
12:45Look for that and it's just to the left.
12:47Oh, it's Fuston Reservoir.
12:50Six minutes.
12:52So we've been told that there was a motorcycle with a pillion passing
12:55that the passenger had collided with something and that the passenger had been thrown some distance.
13:00It can be difficult if we're going to a job that's got multiple patients
13:03because we need to figure out which patient is more serious and deal with those first.
13:09So, landing-wise, it should be fairly straightforward because of the location of it.
13:14But if they're really sick, it might be worthwhile if one of them is poor,
13:17they might be flying one of them.
13:20Nine-nine to address.
13:22Nine-nine.
13:23We've got any clinical updates from Steve, please, the rest.
13:26So basically there's two patients involved in this.
13:28The motorbike has gone over a brick wall and the female has fallen down about a four-foot planking.
13:33There's MRC on the scene.
13:35And they're concerned for a quick pelvic injury and open activity fracture.
13:41She's been having quite a bit of pain.
13:44She's not moved at all since it happened.
13:46And we've got a male who's got an arm, injury, a quick broken arm, but he's up and walking around.
13:53Roger, thank you.
13:54They're passing RAF Menwith Hill, a military base known locally as the Golf Balls.
14:02We'll assess her. If he's watching, we'll just go straight to her and see if she needs blood.
14:06So, just coming down the right-hand side now, got some vehicles.
14:09Looks like they're in a field, which seems to be the obvious sort of place to go.
14:14Nine-nine overhead.
14:15Right, three o'clock?
14:16Yep.
14:17Happy in the field?
14:18Yeah.
14:19Try not to get too close to them.
14:22Where do we think is the least slopey bit?
14:24There's a sheep right underneath him.
14:27Nine-nine landers.
14:29Secondary bag?
14:31Yep.
14:40Hello.
14:41You alright?
14:42Hi.
14:43Hello, love.
14:45What's your name?
14:46Hi, buddy.
14:47Emily, my name's Fiona.
14:49Alright, we're going to give you some pain relief.
14:51Can you tell me where it hurts most?
14:54Oh, that hip and leg.
14:56Okay.
14:5833-year-old Emily Halliday was on the back of her friend Darren's motorbike when they lost control and hit the dry stone wall.
15:06Did anyone see what happened and what?
15:08Yeah.
15:09They went to kind of go back onto the left-hand side.
15:11It's got in the way.
15:12All right.
15:13It's all right.
15:14It's all right.
15:15Yeah.
15:17She hit the wall then.
15:18Right.
15:19Okay.
15:20Thank you.
15:21When you're at speed and you hit an object, you are still going at speed but then all of a sudden you've stopped.
15:26The organs that are inside are attached to vessels and those vessels can rip and tear causing internal bleeding.
15:34Emily, can you take a big deep breath for me?
15:36Have you got any pain in your chest?
15:38No.
15:39No.
15:40We're just going to have a feel of your neck.
15:41Have you got any pain in your neck?
15:42No.
15:43No?
15:44Okay.
15:45Feel down your back.
15:46Any pain in your back?
15:47Can you feel your legs?
15:49I don't want to.
15:50Can you feel your legs?
15:52Yeah.
15:53Can you wiggle your toes?
15:54Yeah.
15:55Not that one.
15:56Not the left one.
15:57Can you have a listen and feel them in your chest?
16:00Have you got any pain in your chest?
16:03Pain in your chest?
16:06Ow.
16:07Where's it hurting?
16:08My leg and my hip.
16:10Okay.
16:11Motorcyclists travelling behind them saw what happened.
16:15There's three of them riding along, heading up to the sun in.
16:18The gentleman at the back, the back of his bike's just broken.
16:21It must have been down to suspension obviously.
16:23So springing arms snapped, which then hits the back wheel and it's obviously lost control
16:28and slid across.
16:29Straighten this arm for me, sweet.
16:31Ow.
16:32Sorry, I know.
16:34Straighten it best you can for me.
16:37Ow.
16:38I know you're in pain.
16:39I know.
16:40I'm going to give you a hand on your hands and then give you some pain relief.
16:43Don't care.
16:44What?
16:45It's all right.
16:46We're not going to move you around until we give you some pain relief.
16:48Emily may have a broken thigh bone.
16:50To assess her properly, Tammy and Fiona need to get her onto her back.
16:54But first, she'll be given ketamine, the strongest pain relief they carry.
16:58Nice deep breaths, sweetheart.
16:59Oh, okay.
17:00Short scratch.
17:01You're all right, sweetheart.
17:03All right, we're going to take good care of you.
17:05Just try and take some nice deep breaths, all right?
17:09So I'm not sure whether we're looking at a femur, so we'll have a look at her when we've turned her over.
17:15I'm going to give you something for the pain, but you need to try and relax and calm down just a little bit before we give you it, okay?
17:21It's going to make you feel strange, but that's perfectly normal.
17:24Don't panic.
17:25Don't panic, okay?
17:27Don't panic, okay?
17:28Don't panic.
17:29Just, if we just try and talk a little bit quite a while she's having this drug, because it can make you feel a little bit, a little bit strange, and we'll just try and get nice and calm and quiet.
17:37When we're giving Ketamine we do sometimes
17:40have to tell bystanders and people
17:42around the scene to be quiet
17:44It needs to be a calm environment
17:45because it is a dissociative drug
17:48If somebody's mind is in a heightened state
17:51of anxieties and there's lots of noise
17:53they're going to have a really bad experience
17:55with that drug
17:57Emily, can you feel anything at the moment?
18:00I know, love
18:01I'm just going to give you a bit at a time
18:04I know

26:46A test that records the heart's electrical activity, including its rate and rhythm, to detect any signs of blockages.
26:54So that's 789, isn't it?
26:56Still depressed.
26:57So an ECG is effectively a picture of the heart.
27:01It tells us what's happening within the heart's electrical activity.
27:05So it gives us a moment in time and it gives us an indication of when something's wrong.
27:10Chris had something that was called ST depression and it means that there's a problem within the electrical system with the heart that it's ischemic, it's not getting enough oxygen into the muscle.
27:20So it's a really good indicator that there's something happening and we need to sort it out.
27:24Obviously this ECG that we've taken only tells us what's happening with your heart right now.
27:29With you having these symptoms on and off for a couple of weeks, it may be that what we're looking at now might be a result of something that's happened a couple of weeks ago.
27:36The only way to be 100% sure is to take you to hospital and do a blood test that we can't do outside your house.
27:41And that blood test just looks for some damage that's been caused from any heart issues.
27:47Okay?
27:48If we treat you for worst case scenario that there is an active problem with your heart, if we give you some medicine, then we're not going to miss anything.
27:55Alright?
27:56So we'll give you that spray under your tongue, you've already had the aspirin.
27:59I think if we pop a needle into your hand, we can give you something a little bit stronger for the pain.
28:04Hair desk from MATA. Our initial 12A DCG showed some ST depression.
28:09Can we give you a bit of a spray under your tongue? Because sometimes it can help get rid of the pain.
28:13Yeah.
28:14Is that alright?
28:15Lift your tongue up, so you're going to feel the spray. Lift it upwards up to the roof of your mouth.
28:19Put your tongue on the top of your mouth, that's it.
28:21They're giving Chris glyceryl trinitrate, a heart spray that relaxes and widens blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the heart.
28:29So sometimes it might, or it might make you a bit dizzy.
28:32Yeah.
28:33But we'll keep checking your blood pressure and we'll see how you go with that.
28:36Chris has no history of heart problems, but in recent weeks has been experiencing pain in his chest and arms.
28:43I might feel harsh out, I think.
28:45You're alright, mate?
28:46It's alright. Do you want to lie down? You've got a bit pale, aren't you, bud?
28:49Yeah.
28:50Come here, then. Let's have a lie down, cos you'll make you feel better.
28:52Come this way with your head.
28:54And swing your legs round towards Matty.
28:56Are you ready?
28:58It's alright?
28:59That's it.
29:00That's it.
29:01Shuffle your bum round.
29:03Alright?
29:05Put this behind your head, bud. Lift your head up.
29:09That's it. Rest down.
29:11Shuffle your bum round.
29:12It's bad because he's had some GTN.
29:13Shuffle your hips around.
29:14That's better.
29:15Shall we put this needle in your arm? I think it's worth it, eh?
29:19Chris felt faint after we gave him the GTN spray, so GTN spray dilates your vessels, but in doing that, it can also make you feel quite dizzy.
29:27And it's not uncommon that patients want to lay down or feel quite unwell, because effectively it's dropping your blood pressure.
29:33It might be just that spray that we gave you.
29:36I haven't done it yet.
29:39Well, at least you're lying down.
29:40Yeah.
29:42It's not. It's not. You're going to feel a sharp scratch.
29:46Yeah.
29:48That's why I probably avoid the doctor, honestly.
29:52Surely your oldest carbon necessary.
29:55Shall we put some more of those sticky dots on your chest, OK?
29:58It's because you take your health for granted, don't you?
30:00I know.
30:01You've done the right thing in ringing up.
30:03I just hope I haven't wasted time.
30:05You've not wasted anybody's time.
30:08At least it's not raining here while we're in the garden.
30:11Do you want to just sit forward just a touch?
30:13Just a bit.
30:14Just a little bit. Not too far.
30:16That's it.
30:17All right.
30:18Chris will travel to hospital by land ambulance, allowing for closer monitoring of his condition.
30:25So the ambulance is just arriving.
30:26Yeah.
30:27Hi, are you OK?
30:28Hello.
30:29So Chris is 55. He's called us this morning because he's experiencing what he describes as a tightness across his chest and a sensation into his arm.
30:37He says he's had this sensation on and off intermittently between probably from January, but in the last few days he's had it most days.
30:47So we kind of just think James Cook just for bloods and he was much better for laying down when he had that GTN last time, really.
30:55Blood tests will determine whether Chris is having a heart attack.
30:58Gem.
30:59Yeah, mate.
31:00My spider senses are telling me he's not an happy customer.
31:03He looks quite pale and grey now, doesn't he?
31:05Yeah.
31:06Because of their concerns over his condition, Matty and Gemma will travel with Chris in the ambulance and the helicopter will meet them there.
31:13Gemma, let's go ahead.
31:15Hiya, Fiona. We're about to set off now. Myself and Gemma are travelling in the DCA.
31:19Go over.
31:20Chris was alone at home today. His wife and son aren't aware of his collapse.
31:24Sarah, you're a missus, yeah?
31:25Yeah, yeah. And Joe's my son, yeah.
31:27Hi, Sarah. My name's Matt. I'm a paramedic from ambulance service. I don't want you to panic at all.
31:34Just to let you know, Chris has called for 999 this morning because he's got some pain in his chest.
31:40And we're taking him to James Cook Hospital, OK? So he's conscious, he's breathing, he's talking to us.
31:46We've done a few ECGs which show that there may be something happening with his heart at the minute, which is why we want him to get into the hospital.
31:53And I can put him on for you if you want to talk to him. Yeah, OK. Boss is on the phone now, mate.
32:00I'm all right.
32:01I'm all right. I'm just sleeping.
32:03I'm all right.
32:04Chris is being taken to the A&E department at James Cook Hospital, where Sarah will meet him.
32:17What's that pain score now, would you say? What would you give it? About a five. About a five.
32:26It's gone back up, that's it. Yeah. Right, so just keep your arms in.
32:32Hospital staff will now run tests to find out if Chris has a blockage in his arteries, a problem that could mean heart surgery.
32:40It's Sunday afternoon at the air base, and Dr James is helping paramedic Fiona practice for an air ambulance charity cricket match.
33:05Most of my balls are going to go from that side to that way.
33:09So once it's bounced... It's going to go that way, yeah? Let it bounce.
33:12It's like a chick ball. Make it bounce there so I can hit it without moving like that.
33:16To come into you? All right, I've all goofed at you.
33:22Oh, no, don't move her. Stay in. Oof. You caught her.
33:29Ouch!
33:32But they'll have to call time on the session as a job is coming.
33:36Fiona's heading out with paramedic Leanne to a sailing club in Narsborough, where a man's been knocked unconscious and fallen from his boat.
33:45Why is it down? We're going to go ahead to the one at the top.
33:48No, no, listen.
33:49It's a five-minute flight from the Top Cliff Base near Thirst.
33:54There's a landing site right next to the sailing club.
33:57Nine-nine receiving.
33:58Nine-nine receiving.
33:59Nine-nine receiving.
34:00A bit more UFO that's just popped in. Boat overturned. The patient went into the water, went under the water, was knocked unconscious from the boat as it capsized.
34:11He's out on dry land now. There's a first responder that should be there before you, but you'll be the first ambulance service crew on scene.
34:20Roger, taxi.
34:21So on the way to the job, we were told that somebody had been hit on the head with the back of the boat and he had potentially gone under the water as well, was unconscious.
34:30So we were preparing for somebody who potentially had some fluid on the lungs and also somebody with a head injury.
34:36It's 20 knots of wind and there could be boats and sails and things that could lift. There's got to be plenty of things there that could catch us out.
34:44So what we'll do, because the wind is quite strong, we'll set ourselves up immediately for finals and just take it really slowly.
34:50We'll just sort of choose a spot as we're coming in. How's that?
34:53Yeah, we're good.
34:55Nine-nine funnel.
34:57So if I go for just right of the boats, that'll work for everyone.
35:02They're landing next to Farnham Lake, where their patience has been taking part in a race.
35:09Sit down.
35:11Nine-nine London.
35:16Hiya.
35:18Great trip.
35:19Cheers.
35:21It's a nice place.
35:22Fellow competitors have helped the injured man into the clubhouse, where a community first responder, a trained local volunteer, has also just arrived.
35:31Hello.
35:32Hiya.
35:33Nice to meet you, Amelie.
35:34This is Fiona.
35:35Hello.
35:36This is Arthur.
35:38He capsized, he was in the water, and the boat came down on him while he was in the water.
35:42Yeah.
35:43But obviously on top of his head, all we've got so far, so that's 98 plus 71, conscious talking, BP, 235 over 81.
35:50Perfect.
35:51Thank you for that.
35:52And that's as far as we've got at the moment.
35:5377-year-old Arthur Nowell was doing his third lap of the lake when the wind caused his boat to capsize.
36:00What is it you remember happening then?
36:02I capsized.
36:03Yeah.
36:05I got the boat all right once, I couldn't get in, I got a bit tired.
36:09Okay.
36:10And then it went back over again.
36:11Right.
36:12And I was trying to pull it back up again, and all of a sudden the wind caught the sail and the hull went right up into the air.
36:20Yeah.
36:21Up above my head, and then it kept crashing down straight up above my head.
36:25Okay.
36:26Did you lose consciousness after that then?
36:27I think so.
36:28You think so?
36:29He was conscious for a few seconds.
36:31Right.
36:32And he did lose consciousness.
36:33Okay.
36:34But only for a number of seconds really.
36:36So is it just your head?
36:38Yeah.
36:39Have you got any pain in your neck?
36:41No.
36:42No.
36:43Can you rotate your head to both sides?
36:44Yeah.
36:45Lovely, yeah.
36:46Any pain anywhere else?
36:47Don't tell me why for him about the helicopter.
36:48Don't tell me why.
36:49We won't.
36:50We won't tell anyone, but these guys can't guarantee it.
36:53It's going to be a little trip up to hospital for you, you know that, don't you?
36:56Yeah.
36:57Right, we'll get you sat up nice and steady for us.
37:00Are you warming off?
37:03Are you still wet?
37:04I'm a bit cold now.
37:05Well, we do get a lift off.
37:06Yeah, we'll get your T-shirt off.
37:08Is this what you went in in the water?
37:10Yeah.
37:11I've got some dry shorts and some hard.
37:14Have you got any blurred vision or anything?
37:16No?
37:17Any headaches?
37:18Headaches, yeah.
37:19You've got a headache.
37:20Do you feel sick at all?
37:21No.
37:22No.
37:23Ready?
37:24Ready?
37:25Steady.
37:26Look.
37:27Oh, that's it.
37:28There you go.
37:29They're concerned about the head wound Arthur suffered when the hull of the boat hit him.
37:34Is that sore there?
37:35Yes.
37:36He's in quite a bit of pain around the outside of it, isn't he?
37:39I feel a bit silly, really.
37:41Well, it's an accident, isn't it?
37:42You can't help it.
37:43Oh.
37:44It could have been worse, couldn't it?
37:45When you fell into the water?
37:46Yeah.
37:47Was that just about capsized?
37:48Oh, yeah.
37:49Did you have any pain or anything?
37:50Oh, yeah.
37:51Nothing happened before.
37:52Nothing happened before.
37:53I was tired before.
37:54Okay.
37:55Because I've been sailing all day.
37:56Right, okay.
37:57Usually fit and well then, I'm guessing.
37:58Usually.
37:59Out sailing a few weekends.
38:00No nausea.
38:01No, you just feel a bit woozy and...
38:04Head sort of thing, mate.
38:06And no pain anywhere else.
38:07None in your chest.
38:08No.
38:09Lovely.
38:10Lovely.
38:11Lovely.
38:14Let me just have a little listen to your chest.
38:17It was concerning to hear that he'd had a period of unconsciousness because there's
38:21a chance he's obviously been under water.
38:23Swallowed some water so there could be fluid on his lungs.
38:25So, listen to his chest, see if there's any, like, noise, wet sounds on his lungs.
38:29Yeah, lovely.
38:30With Leigh-Anne satisfied his lungs are clear, Arthur can now concentrate on getting out of
38:38his wet clothes.
38:39If you don't want to do it here, do you want to go into changing rooms?
38:43No.
38:44Do you want to change your underpants as well?
38:46Well, that would be...
38:47Do you want to get that towel?
38:50For a bit of dignity.
38:54You didn't tell us you were stripping all the way off?
38:55I think you did.
38:56It would make great TV all this, wouldn't it?
38:57Arthur will be taken by land ambulance to Harrogate District Hospital for further checks.
39:12Thank you.
39:13Thank you.
39:14Cheers, guys.
39:15It's Arthur's first serious sailing accident in the 50 years he's been doing it.
39:21I'd capsized and I'd got the boat up, upright, and all of a sudden the wind caught it.
39:27It flipped right up in the air, did the hull, and then the hull came down on top of my head,
39:33which was not a good thing.
39:36And then I sort of just...
39:39Everything went a bit woozy for a while.
39:42His wife's aware, isn't she?
39:44Yeah.
39:45I think someone said, yeah.
39:46Is she going to hospital meeting him there, or...?
39:48Yes, yeah.
39:49We're going to leave you in peace.
39:50We're going to get off.
39:51OK.
39:52Yeah?
39:53You take care.
39:54See you later, guys.
39:55Cheers.
39:56As Arthur heads for hospital, Leanne and Fiona will fly back to Topcliffe to reset for the next
40:01job.
40:02In hospital, blood tests and an angiogram confirm the 55-year-old Chris Burnett had
40:11suffered a heart attack caused by blocked arteries after collapsing at home in Stokesley.
40:16You've got a bit pale, aren't you, bud?
40:18Yeah.
40:19Come here, then.
40:20Let's have a light down.
40:21Let's light your head back that way.
40:22He's now recovering well after having four stents fitted and taking part in a cardiac rehabilitation
40:28programme.
40:29OK.
40:30Down while he was in the water.
40:31Yep.
40:32He was conscious for a few seconds.
40:33Right.
40:34Then he did lose consciousness.
40:35OK.
40:36After being struck on the head by the hull of his boat, experienced sailor Arthur Nowell
40:50had to be clear.
40:51He's now enjoying being back on the lake racing once again.
40:57I'm going to give you something for the pain.
41:02But you need to try and relax and calm down just a little bit before we give you it, OK?
41:0733-year-old Emily Halliday has no memory of the crash that threw her from a motorbike
41:13into a dry stone wall.
41:14At first, I didn't think it was that bad.
41:17But when I'd come round a bit on the field, it was when I couldn't, basically, my legs,
41:22I couldn't feel my left leg.
41:24And, yeah, it went awful.
41:27PHONE RINGS
41:30Emily, take some deep breaths for me, love.
41:33On a scale of one to ten, it was a ten.
41:35It was worse than labour.
41:37Worse.
41:38I had a broken femur, snapped in half, and my ankle were broken in four places as well.
41:44Yeah.
41:45Awful.
41:46Since having surgery, Emily has been on crutches, but hopes to be able to walk her daughter
41:51to school again soon.
41:52When I woke up, I felt lucky to be alive, definitely lucky to be alive,
41:58and still actually have my legs there as well.
42:01It's made me think about life more, and living it more,
42:04and doing more exciting things.
42:06Safe, exciting things.
42:13Clare, get the school piece up, mate.
42:1618-year-old Edward Suttle was left injured for seven hours on a remote track
42:21after coming off his quad bike on the way home from a party.
42:24The day of the accident, I was just working, same as normal,
42:29and then we decided that we were going to go to this party,
42:33so there was quite a few of us went on different types of bikes,
42:36and we'd had a good time, and I thought I'd best get home,
42:40but I didn't quite make it getting home.
42:42The next morning, I obviously wasn't where I should have been,
42:45so they thought the best look for me, and that was, I think,
42:48maybe half past seven, eight the next morning,
42:50so I'd been there quite a while.
42:52The first thing they did with me in hospital was scan me
42:56to find out how bad my head was,
42:58and I'd got two bleeds on the brain,
43:01but luckily they didn't have to operate,
43:03and they said it was my short-term memory that had been hit,
43:07but really the only thing that I've forgotten is the accident.
43:12I've done quite well to fight through it and still be here.
43:42There's no need for us to be here...
43:45There's no need for us to be here...
43:47There's no need for us to go.
43:48There's a way to find out the act of life.
43:50If you've got to be here,

44:07It's beautiful.
