00:00The concept of affordability. Do you or I feel like we can afford our everyday lives?
00:07Well, it's a question that's going to be central for President Trump and the GOP between now and
00:12next year's midterms. And the president knows it. Trump already spends a great deal of time
00:17talking about how things are more affordable on his watch. Here he is on Thursday.
00:21Under the Biden administration, Thanksgiving meal, a Thanksgiving meal with all the tribunals
00:26costs 25 percent more. In other words, our Thanksgiving this year coming up will cost
00:3425 percent less than sleepy Joe Biden's. While President Trump pushes talk of cheaper prices,
00:40Vice President J.D. Vance posted a plea to his party online to, quote, focus on the home front
00:46and added that affordability is, quote, the metric by which will ultimately be judged in 2026.
00:53Well, the Post looked at the cold, hard facts here. And while certain items are undoubtedly
00:58less expensive now than they were a year ago, taken as a whole, two of the biggest retailers in the
01:04country, Target and Walmart, saw prices actually jump more than five percent year over year. This
01:10comes from an analysis that looked at 16,000 items on each company's website. Then there's September's
01:17Consumer Price Index. It showed that food is up more than three percent. Now, our reporters dug
01:23into prices of home goods, pet goods, health and beauty items, electronics, all of them, each and
01:28every one were up between six and ten percent year over year. Now, voters sent a clear message during
01:35this week's election, and it seems the White House heard it. Now, we're going to keep an eye on it. And if
01:40you want to take a look at item by item, I'm going to link to the post reporting in the show notes.
