00:00She was evil, corrupt, and only focused on bad things for our country.
00:05That was President Trump commemorating former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's four decades in politics
00:11after the California Democrat announced her retirement.
00:14Yes, that was a direct quote.
00:17Putting the, let's call it, frosty relationship between the President and Pelosi aside,
00:22the veteran lawmaker is stepping down with quite a few feathers in her hat,
00:25including being the first woman ever to become Speaker of the House.
00:29Now, Pelosi will finish out her current term to the end of 2026 and then not seek re-election.
00:35Now, had the octogenarian run again, she was set to face primary challenges,
00:39including one from the former Chief of Staff for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
00:44The concept of affordability.
00:47Do you or I feel like we can afford our everyday lives?
00:52Well, it's a question that's going to be central for President Trump and the GOP
00:55between now and next year's midterms.
00:57And the President knows it.
00:59Trump already spends a great deal of time talking about how things are more affordable on his watch.
01:04Here he is on Thursday.
01:05Under the Biden administration, Thanksgiving meal, a Thanksgiving meal with all the tribunals,
01:12costs 25% more.
01:14In other words, our Thanksgiving this year coming up will cost 25% less than sleepy Joe Biden's.
01:22While President Trump pushes talk of cheaper prices, Vice President J.D. Vance posted a plea to his party online
01:28to, quote, focus on the home front and added that affordability is, quote, the metric by which will ultimately be judged in 2026.
01:37Well, the Post looked at the cold, hard facts here.
01:41And while certain items are undoubtedly less expensive now than they were a year ago,
01:46taken as a whole, two of the biggest retailers in the country, Target and Walmart,
01:50saw prices actually jump more than 5% year over year.
01:54This comes from an analysis that looked at 16,000 items on each company's website.
02:00Then there's September's consumer price index.
02:03It showed that food is up more than 3%.
02:05Now, our reporters dug into prices of home goods, pet goods, health and beauty items, electronics,
02:11all of them, each and every one, were up between 6% and 10% year over year.
02:18Now, voters sent a clear message during this week's election, and it seems the White House heard it.
02:23Now, we're going to keep an eye on it.
02:24And if you want to take a look at item by item, I'm going to link to the Post's reporting in the show notes.
02:28A woman in Texas was rescued this week from one of the most bizarre and grisly situations I've reported on.
02:38Police in Austin found this unnamed victim chained up in the backyard of a house and tortured with BB guns.
02:46She was naked from the waist down, chained to metal exercise equipment.
02:51And authorities say she had severe injuries, suggesting that she'd been out there for quite a while.
02:57While police were really focused on freeing her, five people who were inside the house attempted to flee,
03:04but they were immediately captured.
03:06Police also found two children living in the home who were then placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
03:13So how did this poor soul end up in this situation?
03:17Well, the victim told investigators that she was friends with one of those five people in the house,
03:23a woman named Michelle Garcia.
03:25But police said in the understatement of the century, quote,
03:29at some point, they decided they no longer liked her.
03:32Now, the woman says she was forced to live outside for weeks.
03:35And mind you, it's been dipping into the 50s at night in Austin recently.
03:39And she says when she tried to escape, she was beaten.
03:42Detectives added that the victim was fed just one plate of food per day and was shackled with both wrists locked behind her.
03:49And according to an affidavit obtained by the Austin American Statesman newspaper,
03:54one of the five who were arrested admitted to using a BB gun to chase the woman around the yard because he, quote,
04:03effing hates her.
