01:32I thought I'd meet with a local architect and learn more about the history of this beautiful village
01:36and also what he thinks the future is for this historic part of town.
01:43Robert, a very nice vantage point of the village, even on a rainy day like today.
01:47What's its history?
01:49The history of Biltmore Village was that it was basically built to order for George Vanderbilt.
01:54He hired the architect Rich Morris Hunt and Frederick Law Olmsted to lay out the village to his direction.
02:03And he wanted to create a village that resembled a living, working village like you might see in England.
02:10So it's immediately adjacent to the estate, but its purpose?
02:14The purpose was to create a focal point with something to grow from at the entrance to his estate.
02:21So people who came on the train from New York were presented with the village.
02:26And the style of the houses are very distinctive.
02:29They are. You know, we would call them English Tudor, but they have the Jerkinhead roofs on a lot of the gables.
02:35That's a very distinctive clip to the gables.
02:38Yeah. And that softens the buildings.
02:41And between the half-timbering, on a traditional Tudor, I'm used to seeing a stucco much smoother.
02:47This is a very distinctive look.
02:48Right. The locals refer to it as pebbled ash.
02:51In England, it was called rough cast.
02:54And it became pebbled ash because you literally mix a slurry up of pebbles and concrete and slosh it up onto the wall in this line of beautiful buildings and cottages right here.
03:07I mean, these were never here.
03:08These were not. And there were plans to develop houses.
03:13Unfortunately, George Vanderbilt died in 1914 and the flood of 1916 was devastating.
03:21And after that, Edith eventually sold the village.
03:25Speaking of floods.
03:27Yeah.
03:28The flood of 1916.
03:29No.
03:30Worse or not as worse as Helene?
03:32Not as worse.
03:33Not as worse.
03:34No. I know our property here is above the 500-year flood line. And we flooded.
03:40How much water do these properties take?
03:42We got about four feet above grade.
03:44And how devastating to the rest of the village, which is lower from where we are.
03:47Yeah.
03:48And many of those cottages, the water was up to the second floor.
03:52And what sort of renovations did you do to these buildings?
03:55We basically tore everything out to the dirt and started over.
03:59And I saw some original details, I think.
04:01Yeah, we were able to save a lot of the paneling and all the woodworking.
04:05We did enjoy disassembling things and not wasting this art fabric.
04:10I have to say, I'm very proud.
04:12My neighbors are going for it, you know.
04:15Just in love with the villages.
04:16Yeah, it's coming back.
04:17So you're optimistic?
04:18Not just optimistic.
04:19In certain.
04:20Right.
04:21Yeah.
04:22Well, thank you.
04:23And thank you for your help in saving the village.
04:24I appreciate your help.
04:25Pleasure.
04:26In East Asheville, Mauro is helping Paula stain a new door that replaced the one damaged
04:30by flooding.
04:33Good morning, Mauro.
04:34Good morning, Paula.
04:35I'm so glad you're here to help me with this door.
04:37I think I want to stain the whole thing.
04:39The whole thing?
04:40Yeah, like the whole outside of this and probably the inside as well.
04:45But it's made up of all these different pieces and parts.
04:48It's all different features.
04:49Yeah.
04:50So we have the fiberglass here in the main door, a wood composite around the glass panel
04:55here.
04:56And you have the side panel.
04:58Mm-hmm.
04:59With all everything is going to be stained on your own.
05:01Yeah, yeah.
05:02And I'm worried that it's not all going to look the same color.
05:04You know what I'm talking about?
05:05Well, you're going to have a slight variation, but it's going to look really cool.
05:08Okay.
05:09All right.
05:10So I masked it out already and the door, you know, is here, but the side light thing,
05:15I don't think it comes out.
05:16No, it's just like one whole piece put together.
05:19Yeah.
05:20I think it's part of like the door jam.
05:21Yes.
05:22We do need to take the door off the hinges, bring it inside, lay it flat on the saw horses,
05:27and then we start to stain it.
05:28Okay.
05:29I think my contractors can help take it down.
05:31All right.
05:32Sounds good.
05:33So we got all we need for materials and we go to work.
05:36Awesome.
05:37Okay.
05:38Paula, ready to go to work?
05:39I sure am.
05:40All right.
05:41First thing that we have to do before any stain goes on this door, we're going to have
05:44to clean this work really well.
05:46And we're going to use the nature alcohol, not water.
05:49Why are we using that?
05:51Because it cleans better and dries very fast.
05:56Just tip your rag right in there.
05:59And we're going to go like this.
06:02Are we just wiping or are we scrubbing?
06:05We're doing both.
06:08Look at this, Paula.
06:09Oh my gosh.
06:10First strike.
06:11Yeah.
06:12Look what we got.
06:13Wow.
06:14Paula, the reason this dries really fast, it's alcohol and evaporates really, really fast.
06:21It doesn't leave any residue or anything?
06:23Doesn't leave any residue.
06:25All right.
06:27What do you think?
06:28I think it looks great.
06:29You know, I think I've just said that I want to stain both sides.
06:31Now that you see this side, it looks so good like this.
06:34Yeah, it looks so good.
06:35I didn't know it was going to look like wood.
06:37All right.
06:38Let's flip this door.
06:39Clean the other side.
06:40If a little stain gets on the window, I'd be able to clean it off.
06:44Absolutely.
06:45Even when you're cleaning the door, always go with the grain.
06:50All right.
06:51Okay, Paula, it looks really nice and looks really clean.
06:54We're going to have, take a little break until this completely dries.
06:58Once you see the door like this looks dry, that means we'll be ready to stain.
07:04And then we're going to use a gel stain.
07:21Okay, it's time to do some stain.
07:24We got the room well ventilated, front door open, all the windows open.
07:29But for the acid safety, let's put some mask on.
07:35So I want you to do all the inserts, okay?
07:38Okay.
07:39You're going to do one side, one side, and then you top coat it.
07:42And I'll take care of the big spots.
07:44I'll start with this recess panel.
07:47Just when you're cleaned up, always go with the grain when you're applying this stain.
07:56We're using a medium stiff brush.
07:59I'm using a two and a half angle.
08:02And you are doing this too.
08:04It's medium stiff, but yours is like two inches.
08:07Angle cut.
08:08Okay, door is completely covered with the coat stain.
08:18Let's take a break.
08:19We'll wait about 30 to 45 minutes.
08:22We'll come back.
08:23We'll remove the excess.
08:25But this time we're going to use a nice clean rag to smooth the stain out.
08:30Once we remove all the excess and it's dry, I'm going to wait about a couple more hours to dry completely.
08:37Mm-hmm.
08:38You're going to apply exterior spire urutine.
08:42It's water-based, dry relatively fast.
08:45You may need two, maybe three coats.
08:47I'll send you a picture when it's done, Mauro.
08:49I will wait for it.
08:53In North Asheville, Jen's meeting up with local landscape architect, Jennifer,
08:58to help build new boulder walls and learn about the landscape plan.
09:04Oh, it's a beauty.
09:05Looks good.
09:06Jen, this looks perfect.
09:11That's an amazing specimen boulder.
09:13Absolutely.
09:14I like how it hooks around.
09:15Yeah, it's like a perfect natural anchor point right into the slope.
09:18I really like it.
09:19So what I want to do is refer back to your plan now that we have the anchor piece in.
09:23Let's go see what you have for the rest of the front.
09:26Great.
09:27So this is the master plan of the entire property.
09:29Mm-hmm.
09:30Now we're focusing on the front.
09:31So with this slope in mind, we want to do a terraced retaining wall.
09:35We don't want to go high with a four-foot wall.
09:37That would make this feel very narrow and tight.
09:39So what we want to do is two, about two-foot-tall walls.
09:42Mm-hmm.
09:43And we're going to be doing some drainage, some gravel backfill.
09:46Mm-hmm.
09:47And then we're going to add a second tier.
09:48I really appreciate this layout.
09:50I love how it feels like a natural space and that you're going to have plantings in between these two boulder walls to separate it, giving it more space.
09:58And then this whole grass area, too, with the trees.
10:01You know, everyone's a little bit nervous of having trees right in the house, right?
10:03Oh, yeah.
10:04When I first met with the homeowners, they tried to get grass growing here for a while, and they just couldn't make it happen because of all the tree canopy.
10:10Right.
10:11So now we're going to allow more sunlight to come in and we can get more lawn established.
10:15And I also wanted to do an island planting bed here so we could minimize our exposure from the road.
10:21Give a little bit of privacy screen.
10:22Yeah.
10:23And I did really try to focus on a lot of native plantings.
10:26Mm-hmm.
10:27I think one thing that's really important is introducing native species back into the environment after they were taken out by the storm.
10:33Right.
10:34And we're in the woods here.
10:35Yeah.
10:36So put them back in their homes.
10:37Yep.
10:38Mm-hmm.
10:39Well, I appreciate this.
10:40Thank you.
10:41So let's get moving to the next step.
10:42Okay.
10:43What do you think?
10:44Drainage?
10:45Okay.
10:46So behind all the walls, let's just go through what we're going to do.
10:48Okay.
10:49All right.
10:50That's great.
10:51So this pipe, it actually has holes in it to allow water to pass through, filtrate, and then we have it sloped down with a natural grade.
10:58And we have both pipes exiting that way, right?
11:01Mm-hmm.
11:02So any of our water that's coming down this way will be taken care of.
11:04Mm-hmm.
11:05Then what we're going to do, this is on a gravel base, and that perforated pipe sits on a gravel base, and then we put more gravel on top of it to allow that water to come through.
11:14Exactly.
11:15Yeah, and then this right here is our landscape fabric.
11:17Mm-hmm.
11:18The reason why we use this is because I don't want sediment coming in and blocking these holes.
11:21And clogging everything.
11:22Yeah.
11:23We do it the same way up north.
11:24But next up, we need some more crushed stone.
11:26All right.
11:27Ready for steps?
11:28Yeah.
11:29I'll grab my tape measure.
11:30Perfect.
11:31Okay.
11:32This is where the steps are going to go, right?
11:33Yep.
11:34Absolutely.
11:35So before that, we need to move the fabric out of the way.
11:49Yeah.
11:50So I'm going to cut this right here so we can keep some fabric over the rock.
11:53And the purpose of keeping the fabric over the rock is we have a second course to go on.
11:58All right.
11:59So now we're going to grab this edge and we're going to wrap it.
12:01All right.
12:02And try to get it nice and taut.
12:04Yep.
12:05And then that way, this will come down later.
12:07Yep.
12:08Now we have room for our stone steppers.
12:09Perfect.
12:10Let's measure the opening.
12:11We're at about five feet and we don't want them to be super tight.
12:15We want a little bit of room for movement when we set them.
12:17Okay.
12:18So I measured out about four foot seven inches of rock face.
12:21Okay.
12:22So let's set them in there.
12:23So we have two.
12:24Yeah, two.
12:25Perfect.
12:26And we're going to see how they flow.
12:27And then we can stick plants in and grow.
12:28Okay.
12:29Like sedums and time.
12:30Let's go.
12:31You want to pick out the finals?
12:32Yep.
12:33Right up here.
12:34How many inches?
12:35The other one was 28.
12:3628.
12:37Okay.
12:38Let's see if they match up.
12:39Yep.
12:40So, yeah.
12:41We're about four or six.
12:42Yep.
12:43That should work.
12:44Okay.
12:45Yeah.
12:46And then when we install it, just lift up that edge.
12:47Yep.
12:48We'll put the gravel underneath it, lift it up, make it nice and tight.
12:49Sounds good.
12:50Okay.
12:51Yeah.
12:52Kind of on the money.
12:53Yeah.
12:54It looks pretty good to me.
12:55All right.
12:56You ready for the next one?
12:57Yeah.
12:58Let's do it.
12:59Tip this one.
13:00I want high under here for gravel.
13:02Yeah.
13:03Yeah.
13:04I want high under here for gravel.
13:05Yeah.
13:06Yeah.
13:07Yeah.
13:08I want to make it nice and tight.
13:09Sounds good.
13:10Okay.
13:11Yeah.
13:12Yeah.
13:13Yeah.
13:14Yeah.
13:15Yeah.
13:20Yeah.
13:21Yeah.
13:22Yeah.
13:23Yeah.
13:24Yeah.
13:25Yeah.
13:26Okay.
13:27I think that's pretty good.
13:32And then squish it together?
13:33Yeah.
13:34And push them together.
13:41That's pretty good, right?
13:42Yeah.
13:43Yeah.
13:44That's good.
13:46Good enough for now, I think.
13:49Yeah.
13:50I like it.
13:51The next step would be to put in the boulders as a second layer.
13:54Ooh.
13:55What about this one?
13:56Ooh, I really like this one.
13:57All right.
13:58This one will be great next to the steps we put in as the beginning of the second course.
14:01Yeah.
14:02I think it's perfect.
14:03All right.
14:04Well, we got the second step in.
14:05It looks fantastic.
14:06I can see how your design has the flow and I love the organic material.
14:10All right.
14:11So next step is to put in the boulders.
14:13All right.
14:14Well, we got the second step in.
14:16It looks fantastic.
14:17I can see how your design has the flow and I love the organic material.
14:22All right.
14:23So next step is the second course down here.
14:25Perfect.
14:33Hey, Noah.
14:34Good to see you again.
14:35Hey, Kevin.
14:36How are you doing?
14:37Pretty good.
14:38How are you?
14:39I'm doing all right.
14:40So today's task, hanging doors.
14:42Yeah.
14:43Nice turning point in the project.
14:45We've got some pre-hung solid wood, five panel.
14:49Okay.
14:50Very nice.
14:51And you got your rough openings here.
14:53What is your process?
14:55Well, I usually hang doors by myself.
14:59So I do a little different process.
15:02But the first thing I want to do is clean up any sheet rock that overhangs the framing.
15:07Next thing I'm going to do after we clean this up is I'm going to put shims at three places.
15:13Right underneath our hinges.
15:15And you're going to do that right to the framing stud?
15:18Correct.
15:19You get those.
15:20I can clean up for you while you get that ready.
15:25Yeah, so this original door opening is a little bigger than our door.
15:37So I'm just going to pack this side out.
15:40And then I'll put my shims against this and level the shims.
15:45So I've got about three-eighths of a gap here.
15:48Right there.
15:49So I'm going to start shimming at the bottom.
15:51Okay.
15:52So I've got my eighth-inch shims here and three-sixteenths here.
15:57I can put these together in different combinations.
16:01Hold what you got.
16:09All right, Noah.
16:10I've held my tongue long enough.
16:12When we've hung pre-hung doors in the past, we have leaned them into the rough opening.
16:19And then we have come behind the hinges with shims so that we could screw through those.
16:25You're not only putting your shims below the hinge spots, but you're also just doing this without even putting the door slab in.
16:33So a lot of times on these hinges in the factory, the screws come out the backside of the jamb.
16:40You can't slide them.
16:42And this just alleviates all those issues.
16:46So you're working by yourself.
16:48This is that workaround.
16:49Exactly.
16:50And you're basically saying, if I've got one plum side and you know it's plum.
16:54Yeah.
16:55Now you can just set this in and work off of that.
16:57Once I get the floor right.
16:59Ah, that's what we're doing next.
17:00That's next.
17:01Okay.
17:02So this is a perfectly level line.
17:04We measured down to the finished floor on each side.
17:0912 and 12.
17:13Hey, look at that, huh?
17:14It's great.
17:15So that's level.
17:17You're good with that.
17:18Had it not been?
17:20I would take the smaller number, which would mean the floor is higher.
17:26And by the difference in these numbers, that's how much I'm going to take off of that side of the jamb.
17:34So you would just go and theoretically just trim a tiny bit off of one side or the other.
17:39Exactly.
17:40So that when you put this in, you now know it is plum on this side, level on the floor.
17:46That's right.
17:47And with those two, you're good to head off to the races.
17:50We're good.
17:51All right.
17:52Can we put this in?
17:53Let's do it.
17:54Let's pop the slab out.
18:02These are those screws you were talking about that come through the hinge out of the factory.
18:07Shims coming in and out could get hung up on those.
18:09Yeah.
18:10So you're going below it with shims.
18:17This is your hinge side, right?
18:18That's it.
18:25Check it this way.
18:28Okay, I'm happy there.
18:29Let's pop some nails in it.
18:31And if I need to adjust it, these are just trim nails.
18:40You can move them around with a hammer.
18:46You are plum on both planes.
18:52Nice.
18:53Put the slab back in.
18:55Yeah, let's just double check that our reveal is good on the left side.
19:01So from here, our casing will measure it, and our casing will determine where this goes.
19:14So you're not going to infill this and plumb this right now?
19:18No.
19:19Whew, you're just full of tricks.
19:20All right, is this coming back out?
19:22Are you going to...
19:23Yeah, let's pull it.
19:25So this is our casing material.
19:28We want to keep a quarter inch reveal.
19:31All the way around.
19:32All the way around.
19:33So the first thing we can do is use this tri-level.
19:38So we'll draw a line right here.
19:44All the way around.
19:45And then when we come back, we can set to the line.
19:48Exactly.
19:49Beautiful.
19:50Got our casing parts here.
19:55So we're going to pocket screw the legs to the top.
20:03Okay, so another thing we like to do to our casing before we install it,
20:08is we'll take the biscuit joiner and we'll cut some biscuit holes
20:14so that when we run our base, these biscuits will hold us flush
20:20and not get kicked back when we nail it.
20:23So just a nice way to line up your baseboard and your side casing.
20:27Exactly.
20:30So you like to pre-assemble your casing, just like we did with the windows.
20:33Exactly.
20:34Finish casing pre-assembled.
20:35It keeps it all flat.
20:37Okay.
20:49Interesting.
20:50Make the RO plumb.
20:52Set the jam to it.
20:53It's plumb.
20:54Bring the casing into the line.
20:56It's plumb.
20:57Yeah.
20:58And then you just work your way around.
21:00So I've got my eighth inch spacer here.
21:15I like how that fits all the way across the top.
21:20So I'm just going to keep using it all the way down this.
21:25And then...
21:30Okay.
21:31Nice reveal all the way around.
21:33Yeah.
21:34So the last thing I like to do is throw one screw full length into our hinge.
21:42That is what's pinning that side of the jam to your structure.
21:46Yeah.
21:47The rough opening over there.
21:48But none of this side of the jam is pinned to the structure.
21:51How do you feel about that?
21:52It's fine.
21:53It's floating.
21:54And what keeps it in place is the casing.
21:57So we'll have probably five nails on this side and five nails on this side holding the jam to the casing.
22:06And then ten nails holding it to the framing.
22:09So between all that, this jam isn't going anywhere.
22:12Locks it in.
22:13So I have not hung a door this way.
22:15So this is interesting.
22:16Had I not been here, this would be the way you do it by yourself.
22:19To get rid of all that fussiness from either side with shims and all that.
22:22That's right.
22:23It's on the list.
22:24All right.
22:25Thank you, Noah.
22:26That's it for us down here in Western North Carolina.
22:29So until next time, I'm Kevin O'Connor.
22:30I'm Noah Swati.
22:31For This Old House.
22:32I am going to have to report back to my people about this.
22:35Okay.
22:36Do it.
22:41Next time on This Old House.
22:43So we're in downtown Asheville, also known as Beer City, and we couldn't resist but coming to a brewery.
22:48Cheers.
22:49Cheers.
22:50So I hear you are measuring for some shades.
22:53Yes.
22:54We're looking at an inside mount blackout shade.
22:56Oh, it looks so good.
22:58How do we get this prepped so it's going to look as nice as the house across the street?
23:02That house looks great.
23:03This is going to look better.
23:04Game on.
23:05All right.
23:06That's next time.
23:07All right.
23:08That's next time.
23:09See you next time.
23:10I'll see you next time.
