14:16you doing great thank you for having me and in my world this is a masonry
14:20project extraordinaire I don't even know where to start but maybe you can help me
14:27I understand that completely it is a beautiful inn that we are looking at
14:31here the Grove Park Inn was built starting in 1912 the project kicked off
14:36okay and over 400 men worked on the construction of the inn they worked for
14:4111 months in 27 days I know the stone is indigenous to this area but how did they
14:48actually get it in place I mean this looks like a lot of work oh definitely
14:52great question so the stone is locally sourced it was unearthed from Sunset
14:58mountain which is what we're standing on right now all right so again uniqueness
15:03all over the place I mean these lentils those just look like natural cut stones
15:08that kind of fell out of the mountainside massive undertaking and the results are
15:14just stunning I mean really just blown away by the place they only had ropes they
15:18had mules and wagons they had one steam shovel they didn't have the modern day
15:23tools that we have today simply amazing so more of the same inside

15:33welcome to the great hall amazing of the main inn this is the portion of the
15:38building that was built in 1913 amazing it is a beautiful structure in here and it
15:45is flanked by our twin fireplaces that are 36 feet wide and almost two stories tall
15:51wow amazing so Isabelle I have to admit I'm like a kid in a candy store right
15:56now do you mind if I give myself a self tour please all right thank you I'm
16:00gonna start over here hey all right so this is the most amazing fireplace that
16:05I've ever seen right off the bat look at the size of this boulder good stone
16:09masons always put the biggest stones at the bottom not so indicative of this
16:14fireplace because look at this I don't even know if this is three tons or four
16:18tons or whatever but I know how they got it in and it was a pulley a couple
16:22donkeys in a rope so pretty amazing but as I get deeper into this fireplace I'm
16:28going in I want to see the mechanics so here we are in the inside of the
16:33fireplace I'm looking at the Ben Franklin perfection right here you can see
16:37that we're wide at the bottom and as we climb up to the top of the smoke
16:41chamber we cone into the flue chamber and that's why this fireplace looks
16:44perfect and on my way out I cannot ignore these and irons look at the dimples
16:50all the patina I mean this is custom-made but you wouldn't pick this up anywhere
16:54else but a welder shop but you're gonna come around the corner and I want to show
16:57you something look at this this is the original elevator from 1913 and anytime I
17:08want to go upstairs all I do is press a button okay at first glance these stones
17:16are put in kind of a mismatch but I know it's structurally sound why they have the
17:21big stones at the base this wall is actually five or six feet deep so it's a
17:26very strong wall the reason I know that skilled masons were on this project is
17:30look at these grout lines you can see that there's never one straight everything is
17:35at an angle it goes side to side and it follows each stone so that means there
17:39were good stonemasons on this job and as I get closer to this mechanism right here
17:44this is the gong I can't ignore it when everybody on the inside hears that sound
17:51they come outside and look at what they see sunset in Nashville
17:55the house is made up of a series of components there's walls there's floors there's ceilings
18:07there's roofs there's doors and there's windows and every time we bring those components together
18:11mechanically we connect them and you can get air leakage right here that can come out through this
18:18small crack and it's a surprisingly large amount of air now around windows you can caulk them when you
18:23put them in around doors so too but it's in the quiet place you don't think about where the floors and
18:29ceilings meet where a lot of infiltration and exfiltration air leakage can happen so today we're
18:35going to show an interesting product that can seal up any building whether or not it's under
18:38construction like this or an existing building Abe I'm so excited you're here with all of this cool
18:44stuff why don't you take us through the process thank you Richard really excited to show you so today the
18:50first thing I want to show you is the heart of our system this is our our sealant this is a caulk and
18:55how it differs is we're able to aerosolize it aerosolize so it could become a fine mist become a fine mist and
19:01what we'll do is we'll pump it through our system and it sprays through our nozzles here nozzle right
19:06here we'll have four of these stations right around the space and so that sealant needs a way to find the
19:11cracks and so how we're going to do that is we're going to use our blower door just to pressurize and push it
19:17all into all the cracks right exactly right I love this all right so we got to start with sort of a
19:22baseline though we got to find out how leaky this house is to start right right and so this system
19:26what it's going to do is perform an initial test and my teammate Caleb here he's going to help set
19:31up the blower door perfect we're going to get a reading on where the house is starting and how
19:35leaky it is I'll bet you it's plenty leaky for the blower door test a large fan is mounted to the
19:46door frame pushing air into the building to determine the speed and the amount of air that escapes through
19:52the gaps and cracks all right so what do we got for numbers so we got about 2100 cubic feet per minute
20:05of air leakage inside the envelope right now 2100 cubic feet every minute and how much pressure are you
20:11pushing into the building so we're pushing in about a hundred pascals of air which is equivalent to about
20:1530 miles an hour's worth of wind so 30 mile hour wind is pushing on every single seam and that's making
20:22a 2,000 CFM is still leaking through there that's a lot exactly yeah yeah here's a little visual if we
20:29could just pretend maybe this were a a cubic block of air well that's a really good visual because the
20:33people don't understand just how much leaks through here 2,000 escaping and we think that the building's
20:39so tight you know right good and what are we shooting for to get to we're shooting for about
20:42500 cubic feet per minute air leakage well let's go let's get those misters going let's get it started
20:52as the blower door runs the nozzles inside the house spray a fine mist that gets pushed into the
20:59tiny gaps and cracks of the building the mist hardens in place creating our cock like seal that stops air
21:09from leaking while the space must stay clear during application the seal is non-toxic once cured
21:16all right so it's been about an hour how'd we do on our test yeah so if you look right here we
21:35started at 2,181 CFM and we finished out at 484 so even less than 500 that's extra credit good job
21:43awesome this house will be comfortable for the next hundred years that's right thanks boys yep
21:47a little help from the local wholesaler we've added some important components one is fresh air
21:53energy recovery ventilator fresh air in exhaust air out in a controlled way and a couple of air
21:59conditioning condensers for heating and cooling right here heat pumps so we have separate systems
22:04on the top and bottom floors so we've given a little chance to for the air to clear in here so now
22:09we can see the effects of this system here's an electrical outlet box right here if you're
22:13look carefully you see it's completely sealed all the way around no more air leakage here
22:18and electrical wire you can see the coagulation behind here this building is now sealed and that
22:24completes our work for right now from here in ashville but we'll be back to keep all of these
22:29projects moving to the finish line so until next time i'm rich trithui for this old house
