01:29Also a National Historical Landmark
01:31And it was built by George Vanderbilt
01:33The family moved in Christmas Day 1895
01:37And then the home was opened in 1930 to the public

03:28I'm gonna go to the job site.
03:29I'm gonna go to the Japanese maples.
03:43One of our job sites is here in Swannanoa.
03:46This was all built back in the 20s
03:48as worker housing for a nearby blanket factory
03:50and now it's this quaint little neighborhood.
03:52But unfortunately on this low-lying street
03:54all flooded.
03:56Some of the houses flooding was up to the roof line.
03:58Three houses here have been bulldozed
04:00but the rest are staying
04:02including three homes that we're working on
04:04so I figured it'd be time to check in with our
04:06five homeowners to hear about their progress.
04:08There they are, our intrepid homeowners. Hey guys.
04:10Hi there.
04:12A lot of smiles. I like to see that.
04:14Hopefully it's a good time to check in on progress.
04:16Kat, how about you?
04:18Yeah, we're doing good. The house is kinda
04:20starting to look like a home again.
04:22We've got hardwood floors in and it just
04:24looks beautiful. Awesome.
04:26Yeah, and we've got our windows.
04:28We've got our tile delivered today.
04:30Pretty excited. Good. Maya, what about you?
04:32Sheetrock is done. The floors are getting
04:34put in today. Most of my windows are in.
04:36So, super excited.
04:38Allie, Jim, what about you guys?
04:40I'm so excited about the windows.
04:42See all the natural light coming in. I love it.
04:44So how about you, Jim? What do you got to report?
04:46We just kinda picked up tile and my brother
04:48came from New Jersey to help me put it in, set it.
04:50That's what he does for his work.
04:52Well, that's good. I wanna check in with him in a little bit.
04:54But, I mean, I'm glad to see the smiles
04:56and hear about all the progress.
04:58I would imagine it's probably a little bit more
05:00difficult than you guys are letting on.
05:02Like, how are you holding up, I mean, emotionally?
05:04And how's the neighborhood holding up?
05:06I think we've all experienced a lot
05:08and it's been a real rollercoaster ride.
05:10I think we lost a lot of security
05:12with losing our home.
05:14and I also don't think any of us were ready
05:17for a home renovation, but here we are
05:19and I think we're excited about
05:21kind of the future and hopeful.
05:23Trials and tribulations from you guys, Jim?
05:25Yeah.
05:27Days still have its ups and downs for sure,
05:30but, I mean, being together as neighbors,
05:33we try to do it every other week,
05:35get together with the whole street,
05:36and it's been nice to rely on each other
05:39because we know what we've been through.
05:41Yeah, with the house coming along,
05:44it's been huge, but, you know,
05:46there's still things to process
05:48and the loss of security
05:50and just being home.
05:53Yeah.
05:54You know, it's still a lot of stuff
05:56to work through and talk through
05:58and just figure out.
05:59Yeah, I can imagine.
06:00Well, for what it's worth,
06:02I will tell you that we've been through it before
06:04with other homeowners in other communities
06:06and I can assure you,
06:08we've seen it return to home eventually.
06:10so it will happen.
06:11Yeah.
06:12So hang in there.
06:13Thank you.
06:14Thank you.
06:15And if I'll excuse myself,
06:16I'll go check in with Bill.
06:17Yeah.
06:18All right.
06:19Hang in there, guys.
06:20Thank you.
06:21You can see and hear the progress
06:22that Jim and Allie were talking about.
06:23Their windows are in.
06:24All of the board is up.
06:26The house has been a little bit reconfigured
06:28from original, but not too much.
06:30And as promised,
06:31down here at the end of the hallway,
06:33we've got the primary bathroom
06:35and Brother Bill.
06:36How are you doing?
06:37Appreciate you showing up to help out.
06:39So we're trying to get all the tile,
06:41waterproof board up,
06:43work around the window.
06:44We've got a little interesting situation
06:46that we don't always run into.
06:47Yeah.
06:48But if you want to hand me that board,
06:50we could probably fit that up here.
06:51You pre-cut it.
06:52Yeah.
06:53Just watch the corner
06:54because I've got that backboard loosely in place.
06:58And so we don't often have windows in a shower.
07:02So we're worried about waterproofing more than usual with this.
07:05Yes.
07:06Board is around it.
07:07How do you treat the perimeter?
07:09So we have a waterproof fabric that we use a caulking
07:14that we bond to the window and to the fabric.
07:17Then we embed it in thinset that is made for that purpose
07:22and wrap that around.
07:24Okay.
07:25Similar to how you would do a shower pan,
07:26waterproofing with the membrane.
07:28So we need a couple other pieces of the board.
07:30And also this only gets membrane.
07:32This gets membrane.
07:33The side one gets shimmed out.
07:35If you want to pass me those,
07:36the smaller ones on your side.
07:38Okay.
07:39All right.
07:40So you're saying these go in like this?
07:41Yeah.
07:42And then we will waterproof membrane around.
07:46And again,
07:47use that caulking to adhere that waterproof membrane
07:50to the window frame.
07:51Roger that.
08:00If you want to get the rest of the ones up high,
08:01I'll go mix up some thinsets.
08:03Sounds good.
08:12All right.
08:13So we got our thinset mixed up.
08:16We're going to put some up here.
08:20Work it in.
08:22And then I'm going to notch trowel that.
08:25Kevin, if you could just take that trowel,
08:26grab a little bit and just spread it on there
08:28like you're putting mayo on a sandwich.
08:31All right.
08:32We're going to stick this in here.
08:34And then we're going to see if we're plum and square.
08:39That looks pretty good.
08:40I think we're ready for screws there,
08:42but we could mud up the other side
08:44and get that ready.
08:54All right.
08:55A little push.
08:56I did put a lot extra in there
08:57and some might ooze out when we screw it in
09:00and we're going to have to be careful not to over torque it
09:03to throw us out of plug.
09:10All right, so now we've got to put banding in
09:15because we have all these seams here
09:17and they're not waterproof.
09:19So we have a waterproof fabric that we use a caulking
09:24that we bond to the window into the fabric.
09:27If you could cut them for me in the other room,
09:29I have you all set up where you can just pull it out of the box
09:31and slice it with a knife on the drywall.
09:33Perfect. Will do.
09:34And while you're doing that,
09:36I'm going to put our adhesive sealant caulk
09:40around our vinyl window
09:42because when you have a different material,
09:45you need to bond and have a watertight seal
09:47and then mortar or a thinset on what we installed.
09:52All right, you got those ready for me? Perfect.
10:03I do.
10:04What I've got to do is spread the thinset along here
10:09and along here.
10:12All right, Kev, give me a long bottom one.
10:16The first one.
10:17And we're going to embed it into our adhesive sealant
10:24and our thinset mortar at the same time.
10:29And I will go back and squeeze this in.
10:41We have some outside corners here that are pre-made.
10:44and what we do with them
10:48is we fit them here like this
10:50at all four corners
10:52and that'll cover everything up
10:53and we'll be 100% waterproof.
10:55And installation of those is the same as the side?
10:57Absolutely.
10:58Yeah, we just use our notch trowel in the appropriate size,
11:01smooth it out and I'll be ready to go.
11:14Once this cures, this all bonds together
11:21and we'll be waterproof.
11:24So it's actually quite a bit of detailing,
11:26but when you've got a window in a shower,
11:29you want it to be rock solid waterproof.
11:31And absolutely a lot to think about
11:33about the tile and the layout
11:34because this is going to be a sample piece
11:37of what we're going to use
11:38and I'm going to make custom pieces for here and here.
11:41And then your wall will be what?
11:44This is going to be stacked three one way
11:46and then three the other way.
11:48Oh, very nice.
11:49Like a grid pattern.
11:50My sister-in-law picked that out.
11:51Cool.
11:52All right.
11:53Well, Bill, thank you.
11:54Appreciate it.
11:55Good tips.
11:56Thank you.
11:57Again, we're glad you're here to help us out.
11:58All right.
11:59Thank you very much.
12:02Meanwhile in North Asheville,
12:03the roofing crew is installing a new roof system.
12:06As the crew gets started on the drip edge,
12:09I met up with the owner of this operation
12:11to hear about the process and then to lend a hand.
12:17J.D., nice to meet you.
12:18Kevin, nice to meet you.
12:19So I presume you've been busy for the last few months with roofs.
12:22We have been very busy.
12:23Once the lane and the aftermath hit of just the cleanup
12:26and trying to get everything back together.
12:29Well, we're glad that you can find some time to do this.
12:31So tell me the process.
12:33I see one half they're stripping off the old.
12:35How old was it?
12:36So this roof is about 15 years old,
12:39and once we get this half stripped off,
12:41we'll get everything back in the dry
12:42and the underlayment on.
12:43You see these guys here.
12:44They're starting to put in the drip edge,
12:46and then we went with a waterproofing membrane,
12:48putting in the underlayment
12:49and getting ready to start the installation of the shingles here.
12:52So I know a lot of the damage here
12:54was actually trees going through the roof.
12:56Are you putting down the shingles a different way
12:58given the wind situation here or no?
13:00Yes, we're going to put the shingles down.
13:02It's going to go down basically same application,
13:04but we're going to six nail application this shingles.
13:06So we'll have six nails.
13:07It's going to give you an uplift of 130 mile an hour winds.
13:09So that's going to make a big difference here.
13:11If we have another storm like a lane,
13:13this will protect that roof from the shingles flying off this roof.
13:16And traditionally, instead of six, you would do how many?
13:19Typically, it's a four nail application.
13:20We like to do a six nail application
13:22just to give that extra wind warranty and extra uplift.
13:24Okay.
13:25Well, I don't know how much help I'm going to be,
13:26but I'm going to get up there and throw in with those guys.
13:28Who am I working with?
13:29You're going to be working with Jayden.
13:30That's my son.
13:31Oh, nice deal.
13:32Well, you're a smart man putting him up there.
13:33Staying down here.
13:34Staying down here.
13:35Thank you.
13:36I appreciate it, sir.
13:37Thank you.
13:38Jayden, how are you?
13:39Kevin.
13:40Jayden.
13:41Nice to meet you.
13:42I'm going to be slowing you down today.
13:43Okay.
13:44Working with you.
13:45Your dad was telling me the layers that we've already got up.
13:47Yep.
13:48What do you got next?
13:49So we're going to get started over here in this corner.
13:51We have step flashing going in,
13:53and then we're going to start doing the kick out diverters.
13:55The step flashing will go where the roof intersects the sidewall.
13:59So before you bend that,
14:00let me just make sure I understand it.
14:02This is not your step flashing.
14:03When you say kick out,
14:04you're trying to create something that will literally take the water coming off this roof
14:08and kick it away from your brick facade.
14:10Yep.
14:11Yep.
14:12And you're aiming it where?
14:13You want it to go?
14:14We want it to go right into the gutter.
14:15Right.
14:16It's there.
14:17If we were to just put a piece of step flashing in,
14:19water is going to just continue off the roof.
14:21Yeah.
14:22And then eventually it's just going to be running right down that brick facade.
14:24Yep.
14:25It'll get moldy and nasty and you'll have to clean it.
14:26Yeah.
14:27So we're going to try to prevent that by making this kick out diverter.
14:30So I just take my tongs and just fold this up a little more than 90 degrees.
14:38And then I like to take some snips and I like to cut this off.
14:44We're also going to put another piece of step flashing above this.
14:50So that's the idea right there.
14:53That is the step.
14:54It is.
14:55So you've got one piece of flashing underneath that shingle, but over the one before,
14:58or it will be as you go up.
15:00Yep.
15:01Next piece of flashing sits on top of the next shingle.
15:03Yep.
15:04So there's really no way water could ever leak in this wall unless it blew straight up underneath
15:09the shingle.
15:10So once those are in, it can start working this way.
15:13Yep.
15:14So Jayden, I've watched you do it a bunch, but I've got to get my head around your nailing
15:32pattern here because I'm seeing the six go in but not evenly spread across.
15:36Can you explain to me your methodology?
15:38Absolutely.
15:39So if we're going to come in with this next shingle here, obviously we're going to butt
15:43this up where it needs to go.
15:45And before we nail this, we've got to think about the next run of shingles coming in.
15:51So as we come in, we'll go ahead and pop this shingle here.
15:55Yeah.
15:56Now, like the courses below it, there's going to be a course obviously over the top of this
16:01one.
16:02So you know that there's another one coming in?
16:03Yep.
16:04And it's going to land?
16:05Somewhere in this vicinity.
16:06Okay.
16:07And so we want to stay away from this as far as possible, but still hold the shingle to
16:11the roof.
16:12You don't want to see a nail here, here or this area right there.
16:15Yeah.
16:16So we want to try to stay four to six inches away.
16:18So with this course below it, where this shingle lands, we're about five inches away, which
16:22is good.
16:23And then this one over here, we're plenty far away.
16:25So we don't have to worry about this one.
16:26Which means you're now going to do one.
16:28One here.
16:29So we're going to start here.
16:30One.
16:31And there's your gun.
16:32The width of our gun.
16:33Plus a couple inches.
16:34Two, three, four, five, six.
16:39Nice.
16:40Very nice.
16:41Kevin, another detail we'd like to try to get right is as we're step flashing up the
16:46roof and everything, we'll finish this all out once we get the full roof on.
16:51So this flashing detail is not complete?
16:53It's not complete, yeah.
16:54Because right now, you can see, water can come down and get behind this.
16:59Absolutely.
17:00So what we like to do is we'll take a seal tape and we'll seal tape it all the way up
17:05our step flashing.
17:06So that's going to actually adhere to the brick, pull the step flashing to it.
17:10Yep.
17:11And I see you got the roller.
17:12Yep.
17:13So we want to be able to roll this on this brick to get a good adhesion.
17:15So that's, is it temporary for you?
17:17Yeah, it's temporary.
17:18Yeah.
17:19It'll stay there for the life of the roof, but it's not our main water protection.
17:24Which is what?
17:25Which is that right there.
17:26If you can hand me that piece of metal right there.
17:27Oh, okay.
17:28So this is our counter flashing.
17:30We just bend this in a metal break and we'll put a little hem on the edge here.
17:35So you guys made this up, right?
17:36We did.
17:37So there's the piece.
17:3890 up top.
17:39Oh, there's, so that's bent over.
17:40That's a hem.
17:41Yep.
17:42That's just so you don't cut your hand on it.
17:43Yep.
17:44And that's a 45.
17:45And what are you going to do with this?
17:46So we'll take this and this is just a little scrap piece, but we'll take this and we'll
17:51put it up against the wall.
17:53So we don't want debris and sticks and leaves and stuff to get stuck underneath this.
17:57So we're going to pull this up off the roof about an inch, giving us a little bit of
18:00a reveal on our step flashing.
18:02And then a 90 that's sticking out now.
18:04So that will be cut into the brick with an angle grinder.
18:07Before we put it in there, we'll put a bead of silicone or some kind of caulking in there.
18:11Yep.
18:12And we'll stick it in and then we'll caulk it in the top of the laying so it's not protective.
18:16This, however, is one of the last things you do.
18:18You're going to put the shingles on this entire roof.
18:20That's going to be the last thing we do, yes.
18:21Good deal.
18:22Yeah.
18:23Listen, man, this has been a real treat.
18:24You know your stuff.
18:25I'm going to tell Daddy he taught you well, but I appreciate it.
18:28And I'm going to stop slowing you down and get out of your hair.
18:30But thank you for the lessons.
18:31Absolutely.
18:32Thanks for stopping by.
18:33You got it.
18:46So, Kevin, a lot has changed since you were here last.
18:51Oh, yeah.
18:52Drywall up.
18:53Well, that's got to feel good, right?
18:54It does.
18:55It feels a lot bigger in here.
18:56Signs of progress, yeah.
18:57It's clean.
18:58No mud.
18:59And I've been picking out some colors.
19:01Yeah.
19:02Trying to decide between this, like, peach and this, like, dusty pink color.
19:06Wallpaper going up somewhere?
19:07Wallpaper's going in the kitchen above the backsplash.
19:10This is the floor I've picked out for the whole house.
19:13It's a French white oak.
19:15That's going to look terrific.
19:17I love white oak.
19:18So, that's all throughout here.
19:20So, seating area here, right?
19:21Sort of.
19:22Yeah, seating area and then a dining room area.
19:24I'm excited to have, you know, people over and building in a banquet over here.
19:29Very nice.
19:30Yeah.
19:31And kitchen down here.
19:32Kitchen.
19:33A nice big new window.
19:34So, now I get to see the river.
19:36So, how are you feeling?
19:37Like, where's your head?
19:38I feel like I'm about halfway.
19:40That's good.
19:41And I'm doing okay, except when the weather's not good.
19:44Yeah.
19:45And it kind of triggers me when it's windy or storming.
19:49Hopefully, that sensation will pass over time.
