00:00Former Trump strategist insists he's going to get a third term.
00:04Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon claimed the president will secure a third term in
00:082028, insisting there is already a plan in motion, even though the Constitution limits
00:14presidents to two terms.
00:16In an interview with The Economist's top editors, Bannon doubled down on his claim
00:20that Donald Trump will return to the White House in 2028, despite having already served
00:24two terms.
00:26He's going to get a third term.
00:28So Trump 28, Trump is going to be president in 28, and people just ought to get accommodated
00:32with that, Bannon stated.
00:34The political strategist has previously floated the idea of a third Trump term.
00:39One idea involved Trump running as vice president, with the presidential candidate stepping aside
00:44after the election.
00:45Bannon dismissed worries about the 22nd Amendment during his interview.
00:49He argued that it shouldn't prevent Trump from seeking a third term.
00:53There's many different alternatives.
00:55At the appropriate time, we'll lay out what the plan is.
00:58But there's a plan.
00:59And President Trump will be the president in 2028, Bannon said.
01:03Calling Trump an instrument of divine will, he argued that a third term is needed to
01:08finish the job.
01:09The Economist's editor-in-chief, Zannie Minton-Bettos, pushed back.
01:12I'm trying to understand the coherence of the things you've just told me in the last few
01:16minutes.
01:17On the one hand, you've said the Constitution is fit for purpose.
01:21Secondly, you said that President Trump needs another term, even though the 22nd Amendment
01:25makes pretty clear that he cannot have another term.
01:29The journalist said,
01:29Minton-Bettos warned even if Trump finds a workaround, he will still be undermining the
01:35amendment.
01:35If the American people, with the mechanisms we have, put Trump back in office, are the
01:41American people tearing up the Constitution?
01:43Would the American people be going against the spirit of the Constitution, ma'am?
01:47Bannon asked.
01:49I think yes, actually, because I think what you will end up with is a populist justification
01:53for a quasi-dictatorship.
01:55Minton-Bettos responded.
01:57However, according to Bannon, that's not true at all.
02:00Bannon claimed Trump's return reflects the will of the American people.
02:04He then dismissed concerns about constitutional risks and paving the way for authoritarianism.
02:10The will of the American people is what the Constitution embodies, and so I think we're
02:14going to be in good hands there, Bannon said.
02:17We need to finish what we started, and President Trump is the instrument, a providential instrument
02:22to finish that, to finish this job.
