Seven years after his first Open Door, Grammy-winning DJ and producer Zedd revisits his old home tour with Architectural Digest. Reacting to his past design choices, his love of shoes, and that infamous Skittles machine, Zedd reflects on how much has changed since 2018, what stayed the same, and whether he ever got around to building his dream music studio.

00:00This is quite embarrassing to be honest with you. I did not remember ever showing anyone
00:06there's still boxes everywhere. Damn. What's up AD? This is Zedd and today I'm going to watch my
00:12open door from seven years ago. Let's see how much has changed and how much has stayed the same.
00:23Welcome to the house. I don't know how but nobody's ever fallen in here.
00:26Drunk or not drunk, please don't be the first one. Yeah, I don't think anyone ever fell into it.
00:31I'm happy to report, I think. Or maybe I was drunk and I fell and I forgot. When I checked out the
00:36house, I mean I fell in love with the house right away. I think there was something so special and
00:41unique about it and it was a really big step for me. It was a very big house. I was kind of in a party
00:47mode in my life and career and it's the first step into a big home in my life that I made and I don't
00:54regret it but I'm concerned continuing these clips because I don't know what else I said in those videos.
01:03There's benches here for when you get tired of walking to the Skittles machine.
01:09This is the Skittles machine that will go to whatever flavor you pick.
01:14Would you like some? I feel like Skittles, if I'm not wrong, at least to a certain extent got banned
01:20because of the the food dye. It seems to me like I'm the only real Skittles dealer now.
01:25It was basically a housewarming gift from Skittles and there's only a few of them that they have ever
01:30made and they were super sweet to offer that because it's such a cool piece that people really
01:35loved not even because of the Skittles but just to have that in your house is kind of absurd. It was a
01:41really cool sort of statement piece so I like the whole gallery way into the Skittles machine.
01:45The machine still exists. I haven't found a place for it currently. That doesn't mean that it's not
01:53gonna have a second wind at some point but for now I hate to say it it's just being stored. I'm sorry.
02:04This is my brother's bathroom. These blinds here they're currently on a timer and I think they go up
02:10at 6 or 7 a.m so when my brother takes a shower, somebody's outside it goes up. He's had an
02:16encounter with our gardeners because he decided to take an early shower in the gardeners. You know,
02:21had a nice view. Yeah, well my brother does not live with me anymore so he does not have to be
02:27concerned about the timer I put on his uh shades but yeah I suppose that was a little bit unreasonable
02:33of me to have a timer going there. I think living with my brother was both amazing but also incredibly
02:40stressful at the same time. You know how it is when you live with your siblings there's always
02:44friction and I feel like once we didn't live together anymore we actually became way closer
02:49ironically and we seeked to be in the same place more and our relationship has improved. So sometimes
02:55we just need a little space.
02:59This is my unorganized unfinished closet. I apologize for the mess and then the other side meant to be hers
03:06but it's shoes. Lots of shoes that I haven't even opened yet. I like shoes I guess you can tell.
03:17Well I feel like I never finished that closet by the way and I don't think the shoes ever looked
03:21organized. I feel like I have a better system today. This is quite embarrassing to be honest with you. I
03:26did not remember ever showing anyone there's still boxes everywhere. Damn yeah yeah that was not finished for
03:34sure. I think I really loved shoes because it was the only thing I was collecting. I didn't have any
03:40other collections back then. To me it was more of a art piece. I didn't think of them as shoes.
03:45A lot of them I knew I was never going to wear but I really loved the design. I definitely will say
03:50that over time I have parted waist with a lot of my shoes and given them away and tried to consolidate
03:56down to a I'll just call it reasonable amount. But I still like shoes but I think with age the comfort has
04:03become much more important. This is like the rooftop. I think if I ever really have like a proper party
04:12this would be a really good place to entertain. I'm imagining like some seats, a movie projection
04:18and so it could be a really nice place to watch a movie when it's warm in the summer. I think.
04:25Never tried it. Well I never had that party. Whatever party I thought I would ever have,
04:30I didn't have that party but we did use the rooftop for a wedding. My tour manager got married at my
04:36house which is nice because I don't like traveling if I don't have to so I didn't have to go there.
04:41It came to me. That rooftop was amazing for a dinner. Beautiful but otherwise even though I was in a
04:46party phase I was always scared of like too many people at my house so this was not very very frequently
04:51used at all. Let's head upstairs to the gym that's not finished yet. There will be a huge machine here
05:00covering the majority of the room. I have no clue what I'm doing because my trainer's not here but
05:04he'll be really proud seeing this. So Patrick this is for you. I feel like I know a little bit more
05:12about working out today. I still work with Patrick and I think my gym is significantly more organized
05:18today than it was back then but I liked my vision. My vision was nice and I will say
05:23I do miss that gym. I've never had been in a gym with 300 degree views or whatever almost every wall
05:30was glass. That was really pretty. I do miss it sometimes. I will admit.
05:38Right now this is still sort of a garage but it will become a music studio. We have to dig five feet
05:44down because you need a certain height to be able to have a good sounding studio and then there will
05:50be stairs going down and there will be one room here and one big room over there. I promise that's
05:55what it will be eventually. Yeah I shouldn't have promised that because that studio never happened
05:59but it's something I really wanted. Unfortunately COVID happened so all of those plans did not work out
06:06but I did end up building my dream studio. Let me just show you.
06:22Welcome to my new studio.
06:26This is something we built from the ground up which I'm incredibly proud of. It sort of fulfills my dream
06:31of being able to be creative, have a space to make music and be able to record immediately anywhere
06:37I get inspired. When I was a kid making music on a laptop I definitely never thought I would be in
06:41any place along these lines. Not even as a visitor. Honestly this is beyond any of my wildest dreams.
06:50So that's my music studio and it's actually part of my brand new house that I would love to show you
06:55in great detail tomorrow on Open Door. So stay tuned.
