New York City’s newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani may have captured hearts with his “why can’t we do this?” message, but analysts warn his ambitious plans for affordable housing, free childcare, and zero-fare buses could face a tough reality check. Eric Gander, chair of communications at Baruch College, says New York “won’t be the paradise Mamdani wants overnight,” predicting that President Trump will seize on any early missteps to rally support in the 2026 midterms. Despite Mamdani’s viral campaign success and youth appeal, experts believe transforming New York’s deep-rooted systems will be far tougher than winning votes on TikTok.

00:00the sun may have set over our city this evening but as eugene debs once said
00:12i can see the dawn of a better day for humanity
00:18the the mayor of new york is sworn in at the beginning of january he has he serves obviously
00:27a four-year term he has to work with the uh the city council and uh the city council in new york
00:35is overwhelmingly democratic so that will be easy he also has to work with the governor of new york
00:41who is obviously a democrat so that will be relatively easy
00:46i do think social media was incredibly important for mandani if you actually
01:16watched his tiktok videos and uh and and particularly his tiktok videos he really has
01:23mastered that form he he comes across as witty and funny and relaxed uh in one he's kicking a soccer
01:31ball around so he's clearly appealing to a generation that is aspirational and one of the uh the ideas
01:41that he repeats all the time in some of his videos is why can't we do this new york since the cold of
01:51october we have built something people who i know from completely non-political backgrounds are getting
01:57inspired by this campaign it was either to go out there and actually do something about something
02:03or to stay at home and do a squat i think he wants like a city that's more affordable for people to
02:08live in yeah that's basically that's how it feels living in the city living anywhere in this world
02:15should not be difficult you know it isn't that difficult like all we need is someone with the
02:20will and the strength and character to fight for us so there are several major uh issues in terms of
02:29affordability and quality of life that uh mondani campaigned on and the question is how many of these
02:35if any will be will he be able to deliver on so there's affordable housing and again i don't know
02:40that he will be able to do much about that fast and free buses he he was he liked to use this example
02:47that you know in other cities like uh places like in i believe salem or some some city in oregon
02:53they did this well that's not new york so i doubt that he'll be able to do much about that universal
02:59child care is a very interesting uh idea that mondani has it that that bill de blasio also uh made
03:09very much a centerpiece of of his uh of his mayorship and i think that is uh i think there's a possibility of
03:16of definitely expanding that let's hear from zaron mandani
03:22how are we doing today
03:34as we stand here in the wealthiest city in the wealthiest country in the history of the world
03:43as we stand here by wall street where last year they had more than 40 billion dollars in bonuses
03:50we ask ourselves how is it that one in four new yorkers are still living in poverty
03:56i think that particular fear again the idea that a quote-unquote uh democratic socialist mayor is going
04:04to make the city inhospitable for for wall street i think that is is genuine is very much overblown
04:12uh i think that new york is the financial capital world i think it will remain that way uh i think
04:20that uh people who who want to invest and and and want to be here will will still will still come
04:27and i think at the end of the day if mondani is smart he will try to work with that that uh that
04:34very important constituency in new york because that is where a lot of the tax base comes from
04:42i don't think that you're going to find uh affordable housing popping up everywhere in the next year
05:01or two so new york is is is not going to be the paradise that mondani wants it overnight and the
05:09president trump will use that to his effect in in campaigning into one in in helping campaigns for
05:17uh folks running in 2026 so yes he can do that what he can do materially with respect to the city
05:24is is is hard to say he did cancel a uh an important project an infrastructure project uh that amounted
05:32to a to a uh an infrastructure project for new jersey and new york and he has the ability to do that and
05:38that could cause some uh pain for new yorkers in the uh in the short term but i think what he will do
05:44is what president trump will do is just ratchet up his rhetoric and his his criticism of uh of mondani
05:52and he is uh uh
