Protesters gathered in Paris as fast-fashion giant Shein opened its first permanent store in the city, denouncing the company’s labor practices and environmental impact. The demonstration outside the store in the Marais district drew activists, lawmakers, and retail workers demanding greater accountability from the Chinese online retailer.

As tensions flared, French officials announced moves toward suspending the store’s operations pending further review of the company’s compliance with labor and environmental standards. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and other politicians have criticized Shein’s business model, accusing it of unfair competition and exploiting loopholes in European regulations.
