Which apps are included in the Aussie under-16s social media ban?

Kick and Reddit have been added to the list of banned social media sites for Australians under 16, effective December 10, 2025.

00:00We are announcing the platforms that on 10 December will be subject to the social media minimum age laws.

00:06E-Safety has assessed Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, X, Threads, Reddit and Kik as age-restricted platforms.

00:17This means from 10 December these services must take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from holding accounts

00:24and failure to do so could warrant fines of up to $49.5 million.

00:30E-Safety's platform assessments will be ongoing and respond to technological change

00:35but we understand that families need certainty now

00:38and now regarding the major platforms captured under the social media minimum age laws.

00:43We have met with several of the social media platforms in the past month

00:47so that they understand there is no excuse for failure to implement this law.

00:51Online platforms use technology to target children with chilling control.

00:58We are merely asking that they use that same technology to keep children safe online.

01:04We aren't chasing perfection, we are chasing a meaningful difference

01:08because it is too important here not to try.

01:12The Government has recently launched a national education campaign

01:15and I encourage all Australians to engage with a range of resources now available on esafety.gov.au

01:21to help them understand the law.

01:39More than one in three children reported that their most recent experience of cyberbullying

01:43cyberbullying came from a social media platform

01:46and over seven in ten children have seen harmful content online.
