00:00The eSafety Commission has declared that the eight platforms now included within this ban
00:10meet the criteria of the social media ban, and that specifically being that their purpose
00:18is to enable social interaction online.
00:23Now, there's some more details on the platforms that have been added, that we've heard have
00:29been added today.
00:31So Kik is an Australian competitor to video platform Twitch, and it has a reported average
00:39viewership of 258,000.
00:43Meanwhile forum-based Reddit is the seventh most visited site in the world.
00:49So this comes as we rapidly approach the deadline for when the ban comes into effect, that being
00:57on December 10th.
00:58So just over a month away now.
01:02And from that date, these platforms that are included will have to take reasonable steps
01:09to ensure that Australians under the age of 16 aren't able to hold an account on these
01:17platforms.
01:18And if they fail to do so, if the platforms fail to do so, that is, they could face fines
01:23of up to almost $50 million.
01:25Now, this comes amid questions around that still circulate around what this ban will actually
01:34look like when it comes into effect.
01:36How these platforms are going to implement the ban and how they're going to prevent young
01:42people from accessing these accounts.
01:44Now, some tech giants have argued that the government's slow rollout of information so close to the start
01:52date of the ban has actually hampered their ability to prepare to impose these restrictions.
01:59There are also still questions around whether or not this will be the final list of platforms included in the social media ban.
02:07Now, Communications Minister Annika Wells was asked about this earlier and she said that this list of platforms is still subject to change.
02:18Let's take a listen.
02:19These are definitely not set and forget laws and with respect to the list, I know, for example, Twitch is still currently being assessed by the Safety Commissioner, so there will still be room for movement as we move into 10 December.
02:33But basically, I just want to give everybody as much clarity as I can, as quickly as I can, so that everyone feels prepared for these laws.
02:40So, as we heard there from the Federal Communications Minister, Annika Wells, there could still be some changes and announcements to come ahead of December 10.
