00:00Netflix goes all-in on generative AI just to hold the boom mic.
00:05While Hollywood is still arguing over whether AI will one day write the next Oppenheimer
00:10or just ruin the Office reruns, Netflix seems to have made up its mind.
00:15It's all-in, but tastefully.
00:18In its latest quarterly earnings report, Netflix told investors it's very well positioned
00:22to effectively leverage ongoing advances in AI.
00:26Yes, robots are coming for Hollywood, but Netflix swears it's using them responsibly
00:31and creatively.
00:32CEO Ted Sarandos was quick to clarify during Tuesday's earnings call that AI isn't about
00:38to replace directors, writers, or Ryan Gosling anytime soon.
00:42It takes a great artist to make something great, Sarandos said.
00:46AI can give creatives better tools, but it doesn't automatically make you a great storyteller,
00:50if you're not.
00:52In other words, AI can pass the camera, not call the shots.
00:56Still, the streaming giant has already dabbled in generative tools.
01:00The Argentine sci-fi series The Eternot used AI to collapse a building, digitally, thankfully.
01:07Happy Gilmore 2 reportedly used it to make characters look younger, and the upcoming
01:11billionaire's bunker used AI to imagine wardrobe and sets during pre-production.
01:16Sarandos insists Netflix is all-in on AI, helping filmmakers tell stories better, faster, and
01:23in new ways, but not for novelty's sake.
01:27That's Hollywood speak for don't expect ChatGPT to direct a rom-com just yet.
01:31The announcement comes as the entertainment world grapples with how far AI should go.
01:37Visual effects artists are nervous, actors wary, and Hollywood is eyeing open AI after
01:42Sora 2's release.
01:44Netflix's Sarandos isn't worried about AI replacing creativity, only revenue.
01:49Despite a 17% year-over-year rise to $11.5 billion, the streamer still missed forecasts.
01:56Even AI can't predict the next big hit.
02:01Thank you very much for watching.
