00:00That's Zoran Mamdani, all set to be New York City's first ever Muslim as well as South Asian American mayor.
00:09That's a big deal.
00:12For decades, New York City's mayoral office has been dominated by white male political insiders,
00:17each powerful and part of the same old network.
00:20But Mamdani is the youngest at just 34, identifies as a democratic socialist
00:24and ran a campaign driven by young voters, immigrant communities and progressive energy.
00:29New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants,
00:42and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.
00:46Now let's talk money.
00:47Mamdani was outspent by some big dollar opponents.
00:50More than 20 billionaires poured tens of millions of dollars backing his rival Andrew Cuomo
00:55and attacking Mamdani's campaign.
00:57Former New York City Mayor Bloomberg alone donated 13.3 million to world efforts against him,
01:03largely because Mamdani has been vocal about taxing the ultra-rich and redistributing wealth
01:08to fund affordable housing and social programs.
01:10We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks.
01:21And yet, the South Asian American hinge rep still won.
01:24Mamdani is not the only one breaking barriers this term.
01:27Others like Ghazla Hashmi in Virginia and Aftab Purewal in Cincinnati have also made their mark.
01:32So why does it matter?
01:34Because this is about challenging the rulebook that for too long said this is how the mayor should be.
01:39And it's a signal.
01:40In a city defined by immigration, diversity and possibility, the voters choose change.
01:45If you had a mayor for four years, replace him.
01:47As Mamdani takes office on January 1st, 2026, the next chapter begins.
01:54Long.
01:59Long.
