00:00Welcome back. The Mexican government rejects the decision to sever the
00:08diplomatical relations with Peru. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum
00:12warned that the Peruvian government has yet to officially notify Mexico of the
00:16breaking relations as announcements have been based on statements. The head of
00:21state lamented and rejected Peru's decision given the measure Mexico took
00:25based on international law to protect former Peruvian cabinet chief Bessie
00:30Chavez who was granted asylum at the Mexican embassy in Lima. Sheinbaum
00:35reaffirmed that Mexico will remain true to its humanist tradition of defending
00:39human rights and providing protection to people persecuted for political reasons.
00:50As was announced yesterday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed
00:55the Peruvian government that the Mexican government has granted asylum to
00:59mistress Betsy Chavez. A note was naturally delivered with a request for her to be
01:03granted safe passage out of the country, conducto so that she can leave the
01:08country. I am following a long tradition of diplomatic asylum and the policy that
01:13Mexico has established in our history and in our humanistic principles and in
01:18strict adherence to international law. Mexico's undersecretary of foreign affairs, Roberto Velasco,
01:26rejected Peru's decision to break pre-diplomatic relations with his country over Mexico's
01:32granting political asylum to former Peruvian chief of staff, Betsy Chavez.
01:37It is also very important. There is a 1967 United Nations General Assembly resolution that establishes that
01:49granting political asylum will never be considered an unfriendly act. Therefore, we reject the decision
01:56made by the government of Peru to break diplomatic relations with Mexico, though not consular relations,
02:03because we are acting as they say in a peaceful manner, with a humanitarian sense, and in strict
02:09compliance with international law.
02:12And in strict respect to international rights.
