00:00We as youth, the number of patents or the number of research papers which our country publishes,
00:05the number of patents which have been publishing are quite less in our country.
00:09And what's something which is missing in the student community?
00:12Now look at the way a kid is brought up in our society.
00:15Are we risk-taking people?
00:19Are we willing to dare uncertainty and challenges?
00:23So there is no heart in all this.
00:25There is only fear.
00:26And when you are afraid, you can't be creative.
00:28All that we'll want is a safe groove.
00:30There are masters in the family.
00:32There are masters in the education system.
00:34There are masters in the society.
00:36So there are just so many masters all around and over you.
00:40And they are calling the shots and pulling the strings.
00:43We stick to the old because that does not terrify us.
00:47This is what has been done since 10 generations.
00:50So this must be the right thing.
00:52If I try out something new, something different, who knows what might be the consequences?
00:58The very nature of research is that there would be uncertainty.
01:04It's a dive into the unknown.
01:06What should I do, sir?
01:07Don't listen to them.
01:08What else?
01:09Why mince words?
01:11Why use sweeteners?
01:13They are being irresponsible because they in no way can compensate for the opportunity you lose.
01:20Good afternoon, sir.
01:25I'm Rashmek from Mechanical Department.
01:28So I have been seeing your videos since last two years.
01:33So the first thing what I would like to say is you changed my view on Gandhi.
01:38So I had my friend group who would be telling different things about Gandhi and I stumbled upon your video once and I have gone through your videos.
01:50So I had a very different view of Gandhi before until that point and it completely changed at that sense.
01:56So my question today is like we as youth, the number of patents or the number of research papers which our country publishes because research is a very crucial, important thing for our future.
02:12So I feel the number of patents which I have been publishing are quite less in our country and what's something which is missing in the student community which is very much important to keep our nation in rest first.
02:27That's my question, sir.
02:29If publishing is an act, somebody has to do it, right?
02:39And something gets done only when the doer has an interest in doing it.
02:58There has to be an intent.
03:03And then one finds a way.
03:06Now look at the way a kid is brought up in our society.
03:16Are we risk-taking people?
03:21Are we willing to dare uncertainty and challenges?
03:28Hmm?
03:31Across all state of society.
03:36What we want is certainty.
03:43We are very alright with settling in some lower orbit of life provided we feel safe there.
04:01Safe, secured.
04:02Life must be comfortable and more importantly predictable and then it's fine with us.
04:14The numbers you are talking of compared to the developed world and now compared to China.
04:20The research output, the patents, they are less reflective of the infrastructure and more reflective of our social mindset.
04:33You see, how does the inner thing work when you are brought up on a diet of fear?
04:47Now, because I am afraid, I will be continuously looking for security, right?
05:00I am afraid and that's what a fearful person can do.
05:04Now, I don't know what security is or whether security exists at all.
05:10But because I am afraid, so I will project a picture of security, some image of security.
05:17And where will that image come from?
05:20It cannot be my own.
05:22It cannot be originally mine.
05:23Because I have never known security.
05:25So, I will borrow it from others.
05:31I will hear it from others.
05:35In fact, I don't even need to actively initiate the borrowing or hearing from my side.
05:41There are just so many eager to lend it to me or rather implant it within me.
05:50They will say that image.
05:54If you reach there, then you are secured.
05:57That image.
05:58If you reach there, then you are secured.
06:04So, even when you are in class 6th or class 8th, you already have been given an image or a set of images.
06:13That's one place you should read and then you will be okay or that place or that place or that place.
06:20Become a good doctor.
06:22So, that's the image.
06:24Get settled.
06:25That's the image.
06:26An IT job in Bangalore.
06:27That's the image.
06:30A US visa.
06:32That's the image.
06:33Right?
06:33One of these you have to crack.
06:37And then from there, from that image, you start tracing a connecting line to where you currently stand.
06:48Right?
06:51So, the line does not start from here.
06:54It starts from there.
06:57It does not start from here.
06:59You don't say, here I am and I have a heart.
07:03It beats.
07:05I'm conscious, so I want to know.
07:10That's where all research effort comes from.
07:12Right?
07:13I want to get into the unknown.
07:16I want to explore it.
07:18It starts from here.
07:20We don't start from here.
07:22We start from there.
07:24And then, backtrack the route from there to here.
07:30So, if you have to reach there, then you have to be there.
07:35N is the place that you have to reach.
07:38So, then you see, to reach N, what is the N-1 place you must be at?
07:44For N-1, you backtrack.
07:46Okay.
07:46N-2.
07:47Then, then, then, then, then, then.
07:48You connect the line all the way back up to yourself.
07:53Right?
07:53So, there is no heart in all this.
07:57There is only fear.
07:59And when you are afraid, you can't be creative.
08:02There is, there is no question of, of getting into research or getting even into life's
08:11glorious uncertainties.
08:14All that we will want is a safe groove.
08:19Give me safety of some kind.
08:23Why?
08:23Because the very, very concept we are brought up with is,
08:31you see, your life is not in your hands.
08:36The moment you are told this,
08:40you will be afraid.
08:44There are masters in the family.
08:46There are masters in the education system.
08:48There are masters in the society.
08:50There are masters in the political system.
08:53And then, there are masters in the skies and in the heavens.
08:59So, there are just so many masters all around and over you.
09:05And they are calling the shots and pulling the strings.
09:08And they can do anything that you cannot control.
09:11So, you will be very, very afraid.
09:12Because these masters, they are whimsical.
09:16You don't know how they operate.
09:20Right?
09:21And they can get upset for no reason at all.
09:26You don't know their own internal system.
09:33Getting it?
09:34Think of the kind of fear
09:35plants into your mind.
09:40Think of that.
09:43And it's not something merely of childhood.
09:49It's there in the environment.
09:54It remains with you constantly.
09:58It's the air you breathe.
10:00It is too much to expect that a society whose values are founded on fear,
10:14on external authority will be a creative society,
10:21a society of researchers, explorers, adventurers.
10:26That's not going to happen.
10:29That's not going to happen.
10:30You will be preoccupied with just somehow saving yourself,
10:43escaping the harshness of the masters in some way or the other.
10:49In fact, instead of a researcher,
10:54you will prefer becoming a psychophant.
10:58Because that's the easier route to please the lords and authorities.
11:02You see that?
11:09The one who tries to make a fresh path for himself and break new ground
11:18is rarely appreciated.
11:21But those who bow down and sell themselves off
11:25and surrender meekly,
11:29they rise to high positions in the society
11:33and in the institutions.
11:35Have you seen that?
11:36Now, why would you then want to get into research?
11:39Even the Indians going abroad
11:44don't really prefer research.
11:47When we go abroad,
11:51we prove to be good employees
11:54doing the conventional type of jobs.
12:00And often it is not that
12:02our talent is irreplaceable.
12:10It is about being more dutiful, more obedient,
12:14being called the model minority.
12:17Or in case of offshore services,
12:24proving to be advantageous by way of cost.
12:36Getting it.
12:42And it's not limited just to science or engineering
12:45or biotechnology or some other field
12:49of scientific research.
12:53Are we creative even in the arts?
12:58Music, movies, anything?
13:03We stick to the old.
13:07Because the old is known.
13:09We stick to that which is tried, tested, proven, verified.
13:22Because that does not terrify us.
13:25We say, this is what has been done since 10 generations.
13:29So this must be the right thing.
13:32If I try out something new, something different,
13:35who knows what might be the consequences?
13:38As a result, we have not even bothered to build safety nets
13:46for those who venture to fly.
13:52Because we don't quite like them.
13:54If you don't like someone,
13:56why would you want to build a safety net for that person?
14:00If the boy or the girl in the family says,
14:06I wish to go out and explore life.
14:11And the father or the mother have been saying,
14:14no, no, no, you get into that kind of government job.
14:18And I'll ensure you get it through bribery or whatever.
14:21Why don't you just settle down?
14:24Take that job and settle down.
14:25And you're saying, no, I want to try something else.
14:27I want to venture out.
14:28One of the threats handed out would be,
14:32all right, go out.
14:32But if you fail, don't come back to us.
14:38So not only are you not being given an environment
14:44to go out,
14:46an environment that actively promotes inquiry,
14:51investigation,
14:53adventure.
14:54You are actually being threatened.
14:58If you try this out,
15:00then you are on your own.
15:02Don't count on us.
15:09You can try to institutionalize research.
15:12Yes, that's how it has happened in the West.
15:15But still,
15:18the very nature of research
15:20is that there would be uncertainty.
15:24It's a dive into the unknown.
15:27And if we fear the unknown so much
15:30that we want to stick to known lanes throughout,
15:35then that's what explains the lack of research culture.
15:38I think we can move to the next topic.
15:47I was reading about relationships in your latest book.
15:50First of all,
15:51is there anything on this that we want to take up?
15:59Research, fear, exploration, inquiry,
16:02any questions from anybody?
16:03Otherwise, we'll move to the next one.
16:04What should I do, sir?
16:06Like, you are saying like,
16:08the whole environment is built up already in such a way.
16:10So, at the end...
16:12Defy the environment.
16:13What else?
16:14Don't listen to them.
16:16What else?
16:18Why mince words?
16:20Why use sweeteners?
16:23It's your life.
16:26You are young.
16:28And if
16:28you lose out on what is possible to you,
16:32if you don't actualize your potential,
16:35you'll have only yourself to blame.
16:38And all those who stop you
16:40from flying high,
16:43they are being irresponsible
16:44because they in no way can compensate
16:47for the opportunity you lose.
16:50Please understand.
16:54If you say you want to go there,
16:57right?
16:59Because there is something for you there,
17:01probably.
17:01You sense that.
17:02And I stop you.
17:04Then I must
17:05at the same time say
17:07that a thing of equal worth
17:09is available here.
17:12Follow my advice.
17:13Come to me and take this.
17:15Right?
17:16Then I'm being
17:17at least partially responsible.
17:19I'm saying
17:20if I am influencing you
17:23or persuading you
17:24to give up that thing over there,
17:26then come over.
17:28I'm promising you
17:29this thing here
17:29and this thing
17:30holds equal value to that.
17:32Now, this is what you'll call as
17:33responsibility.
17:35Right?
17:36Sure, sir.
17:36But the fact of the matter
17:37is those who
17:38are preventing you
17:41from attempting that
17:43which is infinitely precious,
17:45they are the ones
17:49who in return
17:51are offering you
17:52something
17:53that has no value
17:57or a very petty value.
18:00They are robbing you
18:04actually.
18:05Forget about being
18:06responsible.
18:07They are actually
18:08robbing you.
18:10You are attempting
18:11something
18:11that is the elixir
18:12of life.
18:14You are attempting
18:14that
18:15which you are born for
18:16and instead
18:18they are saying
18:18you come over to me
18:19I will give you
18:20this two rupee thing.
18:22This is not just
18:23being irresponsible.
18:25This is violence.
18:28This is violence.
18:29So defy them.
18:31That's all.
18:32Sure, sir.
18:37Do you have
18:38any more questions?
18:39Anybody?
18:41If I deep dive
18:42into something
18:43like
18:44if I started
18:46some work
18:46then deep dive
18:48into that
18:48then
18:49so many
18:51other things
18:51got like
18:53here and there
18:55which are
18:57so
18:58like
18:59I have
19:1170 things
19:13that I think
19:14of as important
19:15and then
19:18when I
19:19get down
19:23to working
19:24then those
19:2570 things
19:27cry for attention
19:28and get
19:30deprived of attention.
19:33Do you see
19:34the contradiction
19:34in the question itself?
19:36Then those
19:3670 things
19:37are your work.
19:38Why are you
19:38attempting
19:39the 71st thing?
19:41Keep yourself
19:42busy with
19:43those 70
19:43things
19:44if they are
19:46so important
19:47why are you
19:48trying out
19:48something else?
19:51The question
19:52is in itself
19:53containing a
19:54contradiction.
19:55Please see
19:55one has
19:57to have
19:58a system
20:01of priority
20:02that is
20:04what is called
20:04a value system.
20:06you must
20:09know
20:10how to
20:12evaluate
20:13a value
20:14system
20:14and upon
20:16evaluation
20:16you discover
20:17what is
20:18more important
20:19than the
20:19other.
20:22There is a
20:23hierarchy
20:23of values
20:25and then
20:28you can
20:28prioritize
20:28this is
20:30more important
20:30so I will
20:31allot my
20:31time to
20:31this.
20:32if you
20:35fill yourself
20:36with
20:37clutter
20:38then
20:41obviously
20:41the real
20:42thing
20:43will be
20:43crowded
20:43out.
20:45There will
20:45be no
20:45space
20:45for that.
20:50Obviously
20:51time is
20:51limited,
20:52life is
20:52limited,
20:53energy is
20:53limited.
20:55So you
20:56have to be
20:56selective
20:56and in
20:59being selective
20:59first of all
21:00you must know
21:01the value
21:01of the
21:03different
21:03objects and
21:04tasks that
21:06speak to
21:06you.
21:08This one
21:08says I am
21:09important,
21:10this one
21:10says I am
21:11important,
21:11that one
21:12calls from
21:12behind and
21:14just as you
21:15are about to
21:15commit to
21:16this one,
21:17you receive a
21:17phone call
21:18saying something
21:18else is
21:19important,
21:19a fifth
21:19thing.
21:24The entire
21:24universe in
21:25that way is
21:26a big
21:26temptation.
21:27temptation or
21:30an obligation,
21:31whichever way.
21:33If you do
21:34not know
21:34what to
21:35attend to,
21:36everything
21:36becomes
21:36important and
21:38when everything
21:38becomes important,
21:39actually nothing
21:40remains important,
21:42which means
21:43life becomes
21:43centreless and
21:44directionless.
21:45the mark of
21:54the clear
21:56mind is
22:00that it is
22:02one-pointed.
22:03not that it
22:10works only on
22:11one thing,
22:13but at
22:15one place,
22:16at one
22:16time,
22:18it knows
22:19what is
22:20important.
22:21Here and
22:22right now,
22:23this is what
22:24is important.
22:26So there
22:27can be no
22:27second thing
22:28that appeals
22:29to me.
22:31I'll
22:32resist,
22:32I'll
22:32reject all
22:33the temptations
22:35or obligations
22:36or responsibilities
22:37or calls
22:39or whatever.
22:43As I sit
22:43with you,
22:44I speak
22:44to you.
22:47I was
22:48talking to
22:48this gentleman
22:48here,
22:49then you
22:50ask this
22:50question,
22:51this becomes
22:51the all-important
22:52thing for me.
22:54Does that
22:54mean that
22:55this will
22:55remain the
22:56same way
22:56three hours
22:57later?
22:57No,
22:58not at all.
22:59Was it
22:59the same
22:59way half
23:00an hour
23:01before?
23:01No,
23:01not at all.
23:02I was
23:04extremely
23:04busy
23:05with
23:05something
23:05else,
23:06something
23:06else of
23:07great
23:07importance.
23:08But now
23:08that I
23:09am with
23:09you,
23:10how can
23:10the 70
23:11other
23:11things
23:12beckon
23:13me?
23:14They
23:14cannot.
23:19But that
23:20can be done
23:21only when
23:21you know
23:22what is
23:23important to
23:23you.
23:26That's
23:26what is
23:26self-knowledge.
23:27I know
23:28myself,
23:29therefore I
23:30know
23:30what I
23:32must relate
23:32to,
23:33what I
23:34must
23:34attend
23:34to.
23:35what I
23:45do.
23:45By the
23:46way,
23:46this was
23:47not related
23:47to research
23:48or inquiry.
23:48me.
23:52Hi,
23:53my name
23:53is
23:54Arup
23:54and I
23:55am from
23:55Odisha.
23:57I have
23:57been a
23:58member of
23:59the largest
24:01Gita
24:01community in
24:02the world,
24:03you can say,
24:03from the
24:04past one
24:05and happier.
24:07And what
24:07is the
24:07best thing
24:08about
24:09Gita
24:10community,
24:10I learned
24:11that it
24:12delivers
24:13to you
24:14the straight
24:14truth
24:15that no
24:16one delivers.
24:17Like the
24:18dhongi
24:18babas
24:19in
24:19every
24:20galis
24:20that give
24:21you
24:21some
24:22kind of
24:23hectic
24:23scriptures
24:24and
24:24complicated
24:25slokas
24:26that even
24:26complicated
24:27you totally.
24:29But
24:29in case
24:30of
24:30Acharyaji,
24:31he clearly
24:32states that
24:33whichever
24:33carry catches
24:34the truth,
24:35is Maya.
24:36You have
24:36to understand
24:37falseness
24:38and Maya
24:38to get
24:39to the
24:40straight
24:40truth.
24:41And I
24:41have been
24:42benefited
24:42because I
24:43have been
24:43an introvert,
24:44very fearful
24:45person
24:46from
24:47childhood.
24:49But since
24:50I have
24:50listened to
24:51Acharyaji,
24:53I have been
24:54a very
24:54different
24:55person now.
24:56I ran
24:5725
24:59Kimi
25:00Marathon
25:00first in
25:01my life,
25:025 Kimi
25:02Marathon.
25:03I take
25:04adventures,
25:05sports,
25:05I read
25:07a lot,
25:08I am
25:09currently
25:10in a
25:10government
25:10job,
25:11I serve
25:11the country
25:12well.
25:13And that
25:13denotes
25:15straightly
25:16that my
25:17total
25:17personality
25:18has been
25:19changed
25:19by the
25:20Gita
25:21scriptures
25:21and the
25:22slokas
25:23and the
25:24truth
25:24straight
25:25been
25:25delivered
25:26to you
25:26by the
25:27June
25:28classes
25:28by
25:29Acharyaji
25:30only.
25:30Thank
25:31you.
