Democrats swept a trio of races on Tuesday (Nov 4) in the first major elections since Donald Trump regained the presidency.

In New York City, Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, won the mayoral race, capping a meteoric and unlikely rise from an anonymous state lawmaker to one of the country's most visible Democratic figures.

00:00The crowd at New York mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani's watch party erupted with cheers,
00:14hugs, and high fives on Tuesday night when news swept through the room that Mamdani had
00:19been declared the winner in the highly watched mayoral race. Celebrating at the watch party
00:24were New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria
00:29Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani, who will become the first Muslim mayor of the biggest U.S. city,
00:36outlasted former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing
00:41the nomination to Mamdani earlier this year. Earlier, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist
00:47said if he was elected, he would not be intimidated by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump, who posted
00:53on Truth Social that any Jewish person who votes Mamdani is a stupid person, has threatened
00:59to cut federal funds to his native city if Mamdani wins.
01:02I look forward to representing those New Yorkers and look forward to fighting for every single
01:07dollar this city is owed. What we see in the language of Donald Trump is a premise as if
01:14it is his decision on whether or not to fund a city the very money that this city is owed.
01:19And I look forward to utilizing every single tool at my disposal as the next mayor of the city
01:24to fight for the people of it. That means using the courts. That means using the bully pulpit.
01:28That means ensuring that we actually follow the letter of the law. And I know that doing so
01:33is something that threatens Donald Trump. It's why he's gone after Attorney General James,
01:36because she had the audacity to hold him to the same law that every New Yorker is held to.
01:40But I will not be intimidated by this president. I will not be intimidated by anyone,
01:44because my job here is to serve the people of the city.
01:46Thank you guys so much.
01:47New York City's mayoral race is watched closely because the city is the nation's financial capital
01:54and its leaders' decisions often influence national political discourse, at least for
01:59the locally dominant Democratic Party.
