00:00In this new story, we will follow a single mother and her two children.
00:03Phoebe and Trevor, who are moving into the old farmhouse of their deceased grandfather,
00:06who turns out to be none other than Egon Spengler,
00:09whom the small town describes as a mad scientist obsessed with the paranormal.
00:12Little by little, the family will realize that he was a ghost hunter.
00:15and that he was fighting against a great threat that had resurfaced from the distant past.
00:18The children will therefore naturally take over
00:20and fight the forces of evil that threaten to destroy the Earth.
00:23So why not? The idea isn't bad, although not very original.
00:26I mean, we're on the Amblin reference scheme.
00:29The children as heroes of the film, the absence of the father,
00:32well-defined archetypes such as the little genius, the horny teen, the cool stepdad, etc.
00:36Now Jason Reitman is directing.
00:38the son of the director of the first two films,
00:40who knows his job very well,
00:41and who is a child of the 80s who grew up with this kind of cinema
00:45and who is trying to pay tribute to him here.
00:46Jason Reitman is primarily an independent film director.
00:49It's low-budget, and you can feel it in its staging.
00:52It's neat, well thought out, and well lit.
00:55You can tell that he's not superfluous on the project, that he cares about it.
00:57It's his legacy, and that's an understatement since it's the French subtitle of the film.
01:01On paper, this is the best thing that could happen to the franchise.
01:03because if you're going to be squeezed dry, you might as well do it by competent people.
01:07So we have a fourth installment that orients its narrative towards homage,
01:10and the passing of the torch.
01:11At least that's how they're selling it to us.
01:12But that's not how I personally experienced it.
01:14The film is caught between two stools.
01:16On the one hand, we have a talented young director trying to appropriate his father's work,
01:20setting aside the comedy of the early films,
01:22to move towards B-movie horror films,
01:24On the other hand, one senses that the executives exerted pressure to ensure that the specifications were met.
01:28by disfiguring the film with crude fanservice,
01:31going so far as to bring back the antagonist and protagonists from the first SOS Phantom.
01:35I am aware that this film is appreciated, and I can understand why.
01:38If it's nostalgia you're looking for, then you'll get it.
01:40But I'm not a child of the 80s.
01:42And when I rewatch the saga, I find four almost identical films,
01:45It's starting to get on my nerves.
01:47Because one might think that this SOS Phantom Legacy
01:49stands out from the other films in the saga, thanks to new characters,
01:52Phoebe in the lead, played by McKenna Grace,
01:55which is undeniably a real strength of the film,
01:57but also the art direction,
01:59since for once the action does not take place in New York,
02:01but in the countryside,
02:02which will give the film a completely new visual style.
02:04with different tail-hooking and scenery.
02:06However, all of this turns out to be nothing more than a smokescreen.
02:09because the film does not claim to be a product of the present.
02:12It feels like we're watching a huge episode of Stranger Things.
02:14with the same dynamic, the same artistic direction,
02:18and the same actors.
02:18And naturally, when your main inspiration,
02:21It's a series that built its foundations on nostalgia.
02:24It should come as no surprise if the fanservice turns out to be extremely crude.
02:27The camera will linger on each object,
02:29artifact, outfit, vehicle,
02:31which are part of the original film.
02:33So we have a laborious first hour.
02:35which will simply show us in close-up what made the franchise successful,
02:38without advancing its own narrative.
02:40So we have a film that comes out in 4K with beautiful colors.
02:43what we have already seen,
02:44And again, even if it means repeating what has already worked,
02:46We might as well take inspiration from the scenery.
02:47Because ending your film in a potato field and in the dark,
02:50It's not great.
02:51So we have the same villain returning.
02:53But above all, we have the original ghost hunters,
02:55who appear out of nowhere at the end of the film
02:57without any effort at staging,
02:58in order to somewhat iconize their arrival,
03:00and to save the younger generation.
03:01The entire principle of inheritance is violated at that moment.
03:05and the admission of failure is total.
03:06Even the relocation of the action is not acknowledged.
03:08since the film ends with a completely random shot of New York,
03:12who has no business being there,
03:13which is extremely poorly executed
03:15and above all, useless.
03:16So, to summarize,
03:17We have a film that sells us the renewal of this saga.
03:19with a new location,
03:20new characters,
03:21a new art direction,
03:22All this just to bring back Zool from the first film.
03:25the Ghostbusters from the first film,
03:26and the car that eventually headed back to New York.
03:29We have a film that opens simply,
03:31and which promises a unique atmosphere,
03:33but which ends with the hit song by Ray Parker Jr.
03:35with the original logo.
03:36Caught between two stools.
03:38But obviously,
03:38All of this was not put in place without reason.
03:40And all these people know that nostalgia has been sold.
03:42since this Ghostbusters legacy,
03:44will be a nice little box office success.
03:46with 200 million at the box office,
03:48for a budget of 75 million.
03:49That's enough to get things going again.
03:51and give us a new sequel.
03:53in 2024.
