00:00The Hobbit is a complicated novel to adapt, not because it's too short or too long.
00:04Personally, I don't think that the number of pages should define the length of the adaptation,
00:08but simply the director's vision, and what stone he wants to bring to the building.
00:11With one paragraph from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, one could make a trilogy.
00:15It would be enough to develop a story around that.
00:17But that's also where the difficulty lies, and in The Hobbit it's the same.
00:20For example, the book decides to develop the company of dwarves as a whole,
00:23where the film must offer them more substance individually.
00:27Logical, otherwise we would have a troop that we don't care about.
00:28Although some dwarves were not allowed to develop.
00:31Like him there, or him, I don't even know who he is.
00:33From this point on, we can say that the length of the film is justified.
00:36Fleshing out characters is important, but Peter Jackson, the eternal child, wants to have fun with his characters.
00:42And he will especially justify this length by putting them in awkward situations,
00:45which will lead to completely crazy action sequences.
00:47Because, well, even if you have to be in Middle Earth to make a film that will be controversial anyway,
00:52might as well have fun, and in terms of regressive pleasure and mind-blowing scenes, the film stands there.
00:57The sequence in the Black Forest has a beautiful atmosphere.
00:59Giving spiders a voice with the ring is pretty clever.
01:02But beyond all that, it's especially at this moment that I think we can realize what Martin Freeman brings to his character.
01:08When he retrieves the ring after slaughtering some absolutely terrifying baby spider,
01:13I would have smoked it without the ring myself.
01:14We can see all the emotions that go through the character.
01:17Satisfaction, hatred, incomprehension, stupor.
01:21He has a very mannered way of acting, you can't say he gestures.
01:24But what is certain is that he uses his body a lot to convey emotions.
01:27Same goes for facial expressions.
01:29He would have been a great silent actor with his own unique facial expressions.
01:34Besides, while we're on the subject of silent films, why not mention the barrel scene?
01:40Which recalls the finest hours of Buster Keaton and which Peter Jackson serves us as a very sweet treat that we will definitely enjoy tasting.
01:47This sequence is a merry-go-round that only Jackson knows the secret to.
01:50Full of staging ideas, ultra fluid, with almost perfect management of space, one of the director's strong points.
01:56All the sliders are pushed to their maximum to make this scene an example of the genre.
02:00Which once again gives a real lesson in terms of infusing a sequence with truly epic discoveries.
02:04And then apart from all that, we have a blast.
02:07And this is perhaps the most important.
02:08Maybe that's what people sometimes forget to do in movies.
02:11Have fun.
02:11After all, having fun doesn't mean becoming blind to everything that's wrong.
02:14And in the desolation of Smog, there are things that are wrong.
02:17The film has a soft underbelly.
02:18The whole city sequence is way too drawn out.
02:20Although there are still some testicular moments in the extended version that are well worth lingering over.
02:38Proof that at least one person had fun with this film is Peter Jackson.
02:47The real negative point is the not-at-all-well-done romance between Toriel and Kili.
02:52Forced on by the production, much to the dismay of the writers and Evangeline Lilly who were mainly there to fumble with the orca.
02:59Now, contrary to appearances, there are a lot of built sets and real sets, and this for all three films.
03:04It's paired with green screen, of course, but for certain sequences, it's a bit obligatory.
03:08Now, there is still some real goldsmith work from the artists at Weta Workshop.
03:12Who also have to constantly work under pressure, but who always do it so well.
03:16In any case, if there is one element that is not a weak point, it is Smog.
03:20The visual work on the character is insane.
03:22The dragon appears so tangible that one feels its immense strength, size and weight through the screen.
03:28It is performed by Benedict Cumberbatch who lends his voice to the dragon,
03:31but also certain expressions thanks to in-depth work
03:34where the British actor will not hesitate to crawl in tights to give body to the antagonist of this opus.
03:42The whole sequence between the dragon and the Hobbit is masterful.
03:54The sound work on Smog's voice is truly incredible.
03:57Besides, it's time to salute the French version of the trilogy which is a great success.
04:00and Jérémy Covillo, the French voice of Smog, has nothing to envy the actor who plays Sherlock Holmes.
04:05Smog is a great success, without doubt the most beautiful dragon in cinema,
04:09which alone justifies the existence of this trilogy.
04:11When I saw the film in the cinema, I really liked what I saw.
04:14And when Smog was about to attack the city, I was 300% into it.
04:18So much so that it could have lasted an hour longer and I wouldn't have minded.
04:21But it ends there, with a cliffhanger that left me so frustrated.
04:24and which can still today, and rightly so, seem unwelcome.
04:27But it's a narrative choice like any other and it's worth respecting.
04:30The Fellowship of the Ring also ends with a cliffhanger,
04:33but which seems less frustrating because it does not take place in the middle of an action.
04:36This is probably the best film of the three,
04:38because it is the one who fleshes out the characters, who develops the story the most
04:41and who strings together pieces of bravery.
04:43When the film came out, everyone wondered what Peter Jackson was going to say.
04:46with the final volley.
04:47And yet, not only will he succeed in telling a lot of things,
04:50but in addition, he will offer us one of the craziest fantasy films
04:53of the last 20 years.
