Tanzania's President Hassan sworn in after disputed election protests

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in Monday at a ceremony limited to invited guests, following a disputed election that sparked deadly protests after two main opposition candidates were barred from running.

00:00Samia Suluhu Hassan's swearing-in was held on government-owned grounds in the administrative
00:07capital of Dodoma Monday, a departure from her previous inauguration at a packed football stadium
00:13as tensions remained high. In her speech, Hassan appeared to acknowledge the polarization,
00:20pledging to serve all Tanzanians. During the campaign period as a nation, we were divided along
00:31ideologies and fun bases. But after the elections, whoever wins is the one that was voted for by the
00:38majority. They are the nation's choice and should serve all, from those who voted for them and those
00:45who voted for the opposition to the ones who abstained the vote altogether. Those of us who
00:51have been voted into office pledged to you, our fellow citizens, that we shall use all our strength,
00:57all our ability and all our knowledge in service of this nation. The country's main opposition party,
01:05Chadema, has rejected the election results, giving Hassan victory. It was not clear how many people
01:11were killed in the violence around the October 29th election as demonstrators took to the streets
01:17of major cities to demand that vote counting be stopped.
