Amnesty international demands transparency amidst protest violence

Tanzania is facing a severe political crisis as post-election protests have turned deadly, with opposition groups claiming hundreds killed amid an internet blackout and military deployment following Wednesday's contentious vote.

00:00Amnesty International is sounding the alarm over Tanzania's elections, which have now triggered nationwide unrest.
00:08In the commercial capital Friday, hundreds of protesters clashed with police demanding a halt to the release of election results.
00:17The government has responded by deploying the military and imposing an internet shutdown across the country.
00:23The police are responding to the protests with tear gas and live bullets.
00:30We are urging them to exercise restraint and facilitate the right to protest in Tanzania.
00:38We are asking them to hold accountable any perpetrators of these violations in free and fair trials without recourse to the death penalty.
00:45And through immediate investigations, we are asking them to lift the internet shutdown so that Tanzanians and the world at large can get access to information on what is happening on the ground.
01:00We are asking them to allow local and international media to freely cover what is happening in Tanzania.
01:08Because the situation is, especially with local media, they are self-censoring because of the repressive laws that are in place, specifically the Media Services Act.
01:19Hundreds of protesters are feared dead while Amnesty International is calling on authorities to lift an internet blackout and allow free media coverage.
