00:30On this episode of the Greenway Outdoors, our journey takes us off the grid.
00:35Ski-doos carry us across the ice and snow as we chase the story of these mechanical relics.
00:41But the adventure doesn't stop there.
00:43Beneath the frozen surface, native trout and landlocked salmon await, and the bite is on.
00:48Epic battles below the ice, forgotten history above it,
00:52and an adventure through one of the wildest landscapes in America.
01:00I'm Kyle Green.
01:02I travel the globe with my best friends hunting for wild game and dynamic conservation stories.
01:07Join us on our adventure as we escape the shackles of the modern world
01:10and gain a deeper understanding of where our food comes from.
01:14Welcome to the Greenway Outdoors.
01:16Maine is over 90% forest, the most heavily wooded state in the country.
01:25With brutal winters and rugged backcountry, it's built for adventure.
01:29Before we start our journey, we stop at Ride North Recreation to load up on skidoos
01:34that will be imperative for our journey ahead.
01:37The initial drive landed us squarely in a blizzard.
01:47Driving through this god-saking town
01:52Don't you ever quit trying to get out
02:00Don't you worry about me
02:06It all turns out just fine
02:11Before we disappear into the wilderness,
02:13we need to make one last stop in the final real town along the way
02:18to stock up at the local bait shop for our ice fishing adventure.
02:21One of the things I'll do when I'm fishing a new lake
02:26is go to the local bait shop
02:27because they always know the most about what's going on in the area
02:30and how to catch the fish.
02:33This is a golden shiner.
02:34Golden shiner, if I had one bait to use the rest of my life for ice fishing,
02:38especially for tip-ups, it'd be the golden shiner
02:40because basically every species seems to bite it, pike, bass, in Michigan.
02:44But here, I'm fishing lakes that I've never fished before.
02:47What are the species that I'll probably run into?
02:49You're going to run into brook trout.
02:51You're going to run into some brown trout.
02:52Landlocked salmon, be your smallmouth bass.
02:55Okay, that's good to know.
02:56I appreciate your insight.
02:58It's always best to go to the local bait shop
02:59and have a conversation with somebody, you know what I mean?
03:01Yeah.
03:02I appreciate it.
03:03Of course.
03:03After a few more hours on the road,
03:05we finally made it to Allagash Headwaters Lodge,
03:07which would be base camp for the next few days.
03:10My friends Jeff and Chuck were ready to fish right away,
03:13so we jumped on our sleds
03:15and headed towards one of the many lakes in the area.
03:17To find our way out of here
03:19I've got some coyote tracks here.
03:43That's not exactly a good sign for fish,
03:45but maybe we can bring the rifles out and try that later.
03:48We've got a visitor.
03:49Oh, geez.
03:50How are you?
03:50I'm good.
03:51How are you guys?
03:52Good.
03:52Are you DNR?
03:53My name is Alyssa.
03:54I'm a park ranger in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
03:58Awesome.
03:58Are we doing anything wrong yet?
04:00You haven't done anything wrong yet,
04:02but what are you looking to do?
04:04We're going to ice fish.
04:05So, good thing I caught you here.
04:08So, you're just over a line,
04:09there's a red post here,
04:11and straight across on that side there's a red post,
04:13and you're not supposed to fish on this side,
04:15where we are right now,
04:17because it's spawning grounds for brook trout.
04:20We can just take you down not too far,
04:22and you guys can fish on that side.
04:23So, would you recommend us starting shallow
04:26and then working our way out deeper?
04:27What's the best option?
04:29So, what are you looking to fish for?
04:30Brook trout or...?
04:32It'd be cool to get a big brook trout.
04:33Okay, yep.
04:33So, if you go down this way,
04:35stick to the shoreline pretty much.
04:37It's really only not that far down,
04:39just a few feet.
04:40Really?
04:41Drill some holes.
04:42People have been doing well in the shallows.
04:44So, by the way,
04:45how long are you guys going to be out here for?
04:47I'm hoping like five, six hours.
04:50Okay.
04:50Well, if you want,
04:52if you're up for some history lessons
04:54after your fishing session,
04:55I've got spots I can bring you
04:57and point you in the direction of.
04:58Really? Here?
04:59Right here, not far from where we are.
05:01Well, then, yeah.
05:02If you want to come over, you know,
05:03just before dinner time or something,
05:05grab us, we'll go with you.
05:06Sounds good to me.
05:07All right, thank you.
05:07See you in a bit.
05:10I have to admit,
05:11Alyssa made me curious
05:12about what cool historical sites
05:14might be around this area.
05:16In the meantime,
05:16we focused ourselves on drilling holes,
05:18putting down baits,
05:19and setting up the shanty
05:21so we could hopefully catch some brook trout.
05:23It wasn't long before Chuck yelled
05:25that he had one on.
05:27Is it big?
05:28I don't know.
05:29Hard to tell.
05:30It definitely hit hard.
05:33Oh, it's a big brookie.
05:34Big brookie.
05:36Nice.
05:37Oh, nice.
05:39That's a perfect fish.
05:40Good job, Chuck.
05:41Thanks, brother.
05:42What are you...
05:43Dude, you're using a steel leader.
05:46Chuck's using a steel leader.
05:47So, like, steel leaders you use for pike
05:50and things like that.
05:51And, I mean,
05:52you can use them for anything,
05:53but everyone was like,
05:55oh, the brook trout are line shy,
05:57and you have to be careful.
05:58You can't use real thick line,
05:59and you're using a metal wire
06:01as your line,
06:02and you still got this.
06:03I didn't have any sinkers,
06:05so it's the best I could do.
06:06Perfect fish.
06:07Oh, yeah, measure it out.
06:09Pinch the tail.
06:11He is 15 inches,
06:13so he's over 14.
06:15So, that's one inch over 14.
06:17You're allowed one of those per day out here.
06:19That's a great fish.
06:20Yeah.
06:21Look at that thing.
06:21That's awesome.
06:22Good for you, Chuck.
06:22Dinner is served.

06:43Your adventure starts here.
06:49We have been ice fishing remote lakes
06:51deep in the main woods.
06:52Now we're meeting back up
06:53with park ranger Alyssa
06:55to uncover the history
06:56that is hidden beneath snow and time.
06:59The first stop is a decommissioned trestle
07:01that once acted as a passage
07:03for trains to go over the lake.
07:05I get the hint.
07:06This hasn't been used in a while.
07:08Since 1926,
07:09so almost about 100 years.
07:11And now it's really only used
07:13as an otter toilet
07:14or the occasional links will cross it.
07:17Otter toilet?
07:17Like, are they peeking up on a rock
07:20and using the toilet and then hiding it?
07:22They're doing everything you would do
07:23just right on the rocks.
07:25Okay.
07:25Yep.
07:25Yep.
07:26One and two.
07:26Yeah, so 1926 it was built.
07:28The locomotives, both of them,
07:30would come on their 13-mile trip
07:31across Allagast Stream here.
07:33Behind us is Chamberlain Lake
07:35and they would make their way
07:36this way to Umbazuskas Lake
07:38and that's where they would dump off
07:40all the pulpwood
07:41and it would ultimately go down
07:43towards the west branch of the Penobscot.
07:46And the pulpwood would make, like, paper?
07:48Yep.
07:48So Great Northern Paper owned the trains
07:51and that's what they were doing.
07:53So where are the trains now?
07:55So they are that way
07:57and they are going to be
07:59on the western shore of Eagle Lake
08:00and if we head towards
08:01the northeastern shore of Chamberlain,
08:03you can cut through past the tramway
08:05on your way to the trains.
08:06They're just chilling there?
08:07Yeah, ghost trains.
08:08When the Great Depression hit around 1933,
08:11they had only been operationed for six years
08:13and they decided it was cheaper
08:15to leave them there
08:16and just shut the doors and walk away.
08:19Why do they call them ghost trains?
08:21Because you don't think
08:22that walking in the wilderness
08:24you're going to come across
08:25the history of the logging industry.
08:27Right.
08:28So it's just this...
08:29It's probably more like a poltergeist then.
08:32Yeah, pretty close.
08:33To be clear, there aren't ghosts, right?
08:35No.
08:36You might hear the occasional cello
08:38in the middle of the night, but yeah.
08:40Here, show me real quick
08:41so we don't get lost.
08:42Alyssa pointed us in the direction
08:44of the ghost trains
08:45and we headed towards
08:46their deep woods burial grounds.
08:48I was excited to lay eyes on locomotives
08:51that hadn't been operational
08:52since the 1930s.
08:54These relics are just sitting there
08:55as the world drastically changes around them.
08:58I find myself thinking about the folks
09:00that operated these machines
09:02and what their life was like.
09:03Would they be fascinated by our curiosity
09:05about these trains?
09:07Or would they think it's strange
09:08for even caring?
09:09I wonder if the guy,
09:10the last conductor,
09:13the one that parked these trains right here
09:14and knew when he was parking them
09:16that it was going to be
09:17the very last time
09:18he would be parking this?
09:20Or if he thought like,
09:21yeah, I'm going to work tomorrow.
09:24Everybody knows conductor
09:25goes down with the train.
09:28Oh, he died here like Titanic?
09:30Yeah.
09:30I climbed up here.
09:31I feel as though I've acquired tetanus.
09:34There's a lot of rust.
09:35You look like you've acquired tetanus.
09:38Thanks.
09:40The next morning,
09:41we hit the road again,
09:42chasing a new adventure
09:43on a different lake,
09:45this time for landlocked salmon.
09:47We were met with treacherous roads,
09:49frigid temperatures hovering
09:50around 5 degrees Fahrenheit,
09:52and wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour.
09:55On a wide open lake,
09:56these conditions are brutal,
09:57but the chance to catch
09:58a landlocked Atlantic salmon
10:00makes it all worth it.
10:02Today, we're going to be fishing
10:09for Atlantic salmon,
10:10but when I say Atlantic salmon,
10:12I'm actually referring to
10:13landlocked Atlantic salmon.
10:16So Atlantic salmon in the ocean
10:18are actually endangered right now.
10:20Pollution, overfishing,
10:23and dams have actually
10:24blocked their migration paths.
10:26Just a lot of things
10:27have completely wiped out
10:29the species near the end
10:30of the 1800s.
10:32And because of that,
10:34there are not any fishing seasons
10:36that you can do
10:37for the migratory ones.
10:39We still have a few here
10:40left in Maine,
10:41but this is pretty much
10:42the last place on earth
10:43where you're going to see
10:44those fish.
10:45That said,
10:46we're still able to fish
10:48for the landlocked version of them,
10:50which are just fish
10:50that were either locked
10:52into the lake system
10:53through the dams
10:54or they were stocked
10:55by the Department of Natural Resources here.
10:57All I'm going to be using
10:58is just a basic hook
10:59with a sinker
11:00and smelt.
11:01That's like their favorite fish.
11:02The ride down to this lake
11:04was by far our hardest yet.
11:06There were almost no tracks
11:08on any of the trails
11:09we had to take
11:10to get to this remote lake.
11:11Once we were there,
11:12the wind was whipping so hard
11:14that just setting up the shanty
11:15proved to be extremely challenging.
11:17But once we were inside,
11:19I have never appreciated
11:20a shanty more in my life.
11:23After four and a half hours,
11:25we had all but lost hope
11:26of catching a salmon.
11:28We didn't have one bite.
11:29Jeff, the wind is howling
11:30worse than before
11:31and packing up
11:32is going to be treacherous.
11:34I hate to conclude
11:36this part of our trip
11:36by not getting a fish,
11:38but I just don't see
11:39what can be done
11:40at this point.
11:41We're not getting any bites.
11:42I just,
11:43the problem is
11:44I don't think the tip-ups
11:45will be able to even know
11:46if there is a bite.
11:47Everything's getting blown in.
11:48It's like a blizzard.
11:49Exactly.
11:50So, I think we pack up.
11:51Don't move.
11:53What do you mean, Dish?
11:55Are you serious?
11:57Yep.
11:57Shut up.
11:59Are you serious?
12:03Dude.
12:05Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
12:07Oh, God.
12:08He's in a new pool.
12:09He's in a new pool.
12:12Oh, God.
12:14Did he splash me, bro?
12:16So, this is an Atlantic salmon.
12:17He's in landlocked
12:19and it looks like
12:20he's probably
12:21about 12.
12:22Yeah, about 12 inches or so.
12:24They have to be 14 to keep.
12:26They glisten, man,
12:27don't they?
12:27Yeah.
12:28It's crazy to think
12:29that if you could just
12:30make it to the ocean,
12:31you wouldn't be allowed
12:31to catch him.
12:32That's true.
12:33I don't know if this
12:34was a stocked fish or not.
12:36It looks like he's got
12:37one fin clipped,
12:38which leads me to believe
12:39he probably is a stocked fish.
12:41I just don't know
12:42which ones they clip here,
12:43but he's missing one right there.
12:44So, he's probably
12:45a stocked fish,
12:46meaning they raised him
12:48from a baby
12:48and then let him go
12:49for fishermen to catch.
12:51But, unfortunately,
12:52he hasn't lived long enough
12:53for us to be able
12:53to eat this one.
12:54But, at least we got
12:55to see this fish up coast.
12:56We actually got a look at him.
12:58And, I feel like our journey
12:59was well worth it now
13:00because that was pretty treacherous.
13:01Fish we've never caught before.
13:02You want to let him go
13:03since you've got him?
13:04Okay.
13:06Get bigger and tell
13:07your friends to come over here.

13:29Live the Sea-Doo life.
13:37We are in Maine
13:38and just arrived
13:39at a new lake
13:40with only a few hours
13:41left of daylight.
13:43But, we didn't need much time
13:44to start catching fish.
13:47So, I'm just trying
13:48in a couple different spots.
13:50This is about
13:50three foot of water as well.
13:53Sometimes these fish
13:54will move in like
13:55patterns around the lake.
13:57So, it'll be like
13:57you'll get wham, wham, wham, wham,
13:58wham, wham,
13:59tons of hits
13:59and then nothing
14:00for a little while.
14:01And then wham, wham, wham.
14:03And by moving around.
14:05Oh, that is awesome.
14:13There you go.
14:15We're in Maine right now
14:16but this is actually
14:17Michigan State Fish.
14:18So, I feel like
14:19they're finally cooperating
14:20for us just out of the fact
14:21that, you know,
14:22we're one of theirs.
14:24I'm just pumped about it.
14:25This is really cool.
14:26Oh, I just had a hit,
14:33I think.
14:34Or weeds.
14:35This is a,
14:37it's not the most
14:37attractive name for a lure
14:38but a lot of people
14:39know this as a Swedish pimple
14:40or a fish zit
14:43if you're from Michigan.
14:44That's not really
14:44a Michigan thing.
14:45I just made that up.
14:47That's a big fish.
14:48Oh, my gosh.
14:55Oh, look at the colors
14:58on this one.
15:00Oh, wow.
15:01That is a gorgeous fish.
15:03Yes.
15:04That is awesome.
15:06That is awesome.
15:09Oh, that is cool.
15:11Was that worth
15:11losing the holes for you?
15:12Yeah, I would say so.
15:14The deeper is better.
15:15And he swallowed it
15:16so we're going to be
15:17eating this one.
15:18Wow.
15:20What a great fish.
15:21That is awesome.
15:22Yes, dude.
15:23I think that's the most
15:24vibrant orange
15:25I've seen in one of these.
15:26It's like peach colored.
15:27So like as they get
15:28into breeding season
15:29which is in a month or two
15:30they will start to get
15:33these really vibrant colors
15:34kind of like their mating colors
15:36and become a little bit
15:37more aggressive.
15:38It's the reason why
15:38on a lot of the lakes
15:39you're not allowed to fish
15:40the actual breeding grounds
15:41themselves.
15:42You have to stay
15:43on that far side of the lake
15:43like we did on the other one
15:45because they're just
15:46so aggressive at this time
15:47but what a perfect fish.
15:53I normally like to see
15:54this spinning.
15:56Might have been a light hit.
16:00The line's straight up and down.
16:05Fish is there.
16:05Oh, no siree.
16:16They're like little snakes.
16:18So they don't have scales
16:19like a normal fish would.
16:20Instead, they've got
16:21like this slimy coating
16:22that actually is like
16:23their protective barrier.
16:25That's why when you're
16:25going to let a fish go
16:26you want to handle it
16:28the least amount possible
16:29so you don't scrape
16:29a bunch of that off
16:30because it makes them
16:31susceptible to like
16:32infection and things like that.
16:33But that's their escape.
16:35That's their armor.
16:36They slip away from everything.
16:37So we're going to let
16:38this guy go.
16:40He wasn't hooked bad
16:41at all so he'll survive.
16:43Let him go on

17:16I like a simple recipe
17:23where the only thing
17:24you actually have to cook
17:25is just roasting
17:26a little bit of corn.
17:27Incorrect.
17:28I had to spend an hour and a half
17:30smoking this fish
17:31and then spend another hour and a half
17:33flaking it and checking it for bones.
17:35Put the corn in the bowl.
17:36Well this is all I had to do.
17:38So I got the idea for this recipe
17:40on my honeymoon, believe it or not.
17:42And I had a smoked lake trout dip.
17:47Or as the French call it, a rillette.
17:49Okay.
17:49And it is a great combination of fish.
17:51You've got some Greek yogurt in there.
17:53You've got some butter.
17:54You put that butter in there.
17:55You've got an onion element.
17:56In this case we're using shallot.
17:58Some tang with some mustard.
18:01And then we're going to take all that,
18:03mix it with some lemon zest
18:05which helps brighten it up a little bit
18:07and make it a little fresher.
18:08And then what I thought it was missing
18:09was corn.
18:11Which, it gives it a little bit of crunch.
18:13You can char it.
18:14Adds a little bit of extra flavor in there.
18:16And we're going to take this
18:17and we're going to put it on top of sourdough bread.
18:19Okay.
18:20Is sourdough bread actually healthier for you?
18:22Is it just something people say?
18:24I like to tell myself that.
18:25I like to tell myself that.
18:41Cheers.
18:41Cheers.
18:42Cheers.
18:43Okay.
18:44Thank you.
18:47That corn did exactly what I wanted it to.
18:50Gave it a little bit of extra crunch.
18:52That was great.
18:53I would eat this all the time.
18:55It was great.
18:55This trip to Maine was more than just an ice fishing adventure.
19:04It was a journey deep into the wilderness.
19:07Miles of frozen trail on skidoos, chasing stories older than us.
19:11And when we finally stood in front of those ghost trains, half buried in the snow in time,
19:17it was like touching a piece of history most people will never get to see.
19:21And yeah, we caught some fish too.
19:23Hard earned, cold fingered, and well worth the wait.
19:27Trips like this remind you that the real reward isn't just at the end of the line.
19:32It's the effort, the unknown, and the people you share it with.
19:36Like in the book of Galatians, it says, don't get tired of doing the right thing.
19:41If you keep going, the payoff will come when the time is right.
19:45This trip was tough, but it's one I won't forget.
