00:00Gayle King may be the latest victim of layoffs at CBS.
00:06It is unclear, and it seems from what we got from her today,
00:13that what's being said inside the building is different than what's being said outside.
00:18Very different, and you're about to hear.
00:21We got Gayle as she was leaving the CBS studio this morning,
00:24and it's pretty clear she's ticked off about these reports that she is on the outs,
00:31because basically she's saying,
00:34what they're saying to my face does not match the media.
00:37Here's what she had to say.
00:38We're all wondering if you might be going in another direction.
00:42Do you have an answer as of yet?
00:43All I've been told by everybody in this building is that they want me here.
00:48They like the job I'm doing.
00:49I like the job I'm doing.
00:51I'll say this.
00:52I like the job and the people that I work with.
00:55So I don't know what to tell you.
00:57I was, I was, I don't know what to tell you about it.
01:00But what I'm hearing in the building is not what I'm reading in the press.
01:04And what I'm not going to do is negotiate in the media.
01:07I'm not doing that.
01:08All right, do you have an idea, like, what things might look like in May
01:11if the show's going in another direction?
01:13I have no idea.
01:14I have no idea.
01:16All I know is I am here.
01:18I am here and glad to be here.
01:19So Harvey and Charles are going to continue to do my job.
01:22Thank you, Miss Kay.
01:23She used one word that makes me think.
01:27There is a word there.
01:28Uh-huh.
01:29The word is negotiate.
01:32Her contract is up in May.
01:33She said, I'm not going to negotiate in public.
01:36And it makes me think, what, exactly.
01:38When she said that, I thought what she was actually saying is,
01:40maybe this is some ploy on their part to try and, that it is, like, them starting negotiations
01:48by planting something out there?
01:50Well, look.
01:51Maybe she thinks that.
01:51I don't know.
01:52But you're right.
01:53There is a story out there that she's being taken off the morning show,
01:57but they're trying to find another place for her within CBS Network, and that you could
02:04argue that the negotiation would be, does she continue doing that, at what rate, all of
02:09that.
02:09But she seems to be saying that, so far, they haven't played their cards.
02:14And, look, I've worked in enough newsrooms, and you have, too, but I've worked in, I remember
02:20some TV newsrooms where what happens is there are rumors that go around.
02:26Oftentimes, the rumors are true, but the management won't talk about it until they actually pull
02:32the trigger.
02:33And it may be that that's going on now, because the stories that are out there, they're citing
02:38sources within the network.
02:40So it could be that those sources are saying, here's the handwriting that's on the wall, but
02:44they haven't announced that yet to the talent in the building.
02:47Right.
02:48Which, again, we don't know, or it's just not true.
02:51But there's been a lot of shake-ups at CBS just after the merger.
02:56Well, also, they have a new president of news, Barry Weiss, and she is causing quite the stir
03:04within the building.
03:06A lot of her views don't necessarily align with the views of the, especially the old-timers there.
03:12And there have been layoffs already at CBS.
03:16And they're also the lowest-rated morning show, CBS is.
03:19Which is absolutely true, which is, I'm sure, what, you know, that's part of the marching
03:23orders that Barry Weiss has, is we can't be the lowest-rated.
03:28Their PR team is denying all of this as well.
03:30Have they said flat-out no?
03:32They said that, I believe that they did say that, right?
03:34They said that this was not true.
03:35The PR team came out with a statement to Brendan yesterday.
03:37Yeah, they came out with a statement that said, we are not, we have no plans, basically
03:42saying, we have no plans at this point to move on from Gail.
03:46And for them to speak, because if you're going to speak, you can't say it unless it's as a
03:52PR team.
03:52You know what, that's actually, I didn't know that the PR team was that definitive.
03:55Yeah.
03:55That's actually really interesting, because I don't think they would say that, and then
03:59a week later, that it comes to pass.
04:01Or a month later.
04:02Or a month later.
04:03Or even, yeah.
04:03But remember, we're right now in October, almost November, and this is May we're talking
04:09about.
04:10They're saying there has been no discussion with Gail about her contract that runs through
04:14May 2026.
04:15Listen to the way there's been no discussion with her about her contract.
04:18No, no discussion with Gail.
04:19She's truly valued for CBS, and we look forward to engaging with her about her future.
04:23That doesn't say the story's not true.
04:26And that's what Gail is pointing to, is that people are saying to me, everything's great,
04:30we love you, but she's been around, she knows the business, that there could be people talking
04:36at CBS about making a change, they just haven't brought it to her or her representative.
04:42That's really interesting.
04:44And that is a PR statement dancing around.
04:45That is a PR statement saying, yeah, Gail's right, we haven't talked to her yet.
04:49But that doesn't mean that the story's...
04:51And if you read it quickly, they are refuting it.
04:54But if you really look into it, they're not.
04:55They're not really refuting it.
04:56They're not.
04:57Hi, I'm T-Rex from Gulf Shores, Alabama, and I want to talk about Gail King.
05:00It is surprising to hear about the potential shakeups.
05:03Gail has been a constant delivering news and with heart and integrity.
05:08It's clear that CBS is in a period of transformation.
05:11Whatever happens, Gail's impact on morning news is undeniable, and I'm intrigued to see what
05:16she has coming up next.
05:18Yeah.
05:19I got to say, that statement from the PR department, at first when Casey said that, I thought,
05:24okay, well, they're going to shoot it down.
05:26They did exactly the opposite as far as I'm concerned.
05:29They don't think that's what they were doing.
05:30They think that they were...
05:31Clever.
05:32...quilling it.
05:32They were clever, but...
05:33Nope.
05:34Nope.
05:37So we just took a five-minute break, and I made a phone call.
05:41Uh-huh.
05:41I got some information.
05:42Really?
05:43I am told...
05:44How about Gail?
05:44Yes.
05:45Yes.
05:45I am told this is about money, and...
05:49Well, that's...
05:50No.
05:51It's not about, do we want her off the show?
05:53Well, hold on a second.
05:54Money as in her salary, or money as in how...
05:56She is making a lot of money, and CBS is hacking like crazy, and this is...
06:03Like a lot of people in the media.
06:04Like a lot of people.
06:05And I am told this is about money right now, and they are negotiating, and this is more
06:11a money thing than anything else.
06:13It's not, we want to get her off the morning show.
06:16It's that they don't want to pay the kind of money they're paying her.
06:18She makes a lot of money.
06:20And Gail, for her part, you know, Gail is a very social person.
06:25She's out all the time.
06:26This is a really tough schedule for her.
06:28Right.
06:29So she's balancing that, I'm told, in this negotiation against what they want to do,
06:35which is to cut salary.
06:37So they're negotiating...
06:38So that is why she used the N-word, negotiate.
06:41Yes.
06:42Yes.
06:43When we asked her what was going on.
06:45I got something else for you.
06:46Remember, that was not part of the report, it was about negotiation.
06:48That's right.
06:49She's used that word.
06:49And I am told that's what this is about, from somebody in the know.
06:53Right.
06:54I got something else.
06:56They're eyeing other people over at CBS right now.
07:00From Fox News Channel.
07:06That's very interesting.
07:09I thought you'd think that.
07:10Wow.
07:10They are eyeing people, I am told, and I'm told take this to the bank, at Fox News Channel.
07:16Because Fox News Channel is the highest rated cable show by far, and I believe beats this.
07:22So makes sense.
07:23They are looking at people at Fox News Channel.
07:26Whether the people at Fox News Channel would go over to CBS.
07:30Would be interested in going to, because that's a culture shift.
07:33Well, not just a culture shift, but they're number one, and CBS is the opposite.
07:37But you know how this works in media.
07:39Like, you're going to appeal to someone's ego, I don't know who they're eyeing, and you go,
07:44look, you're number one.
07:45You can make us number one, because you're the one who's made Fox number one.
07:49Interesting, huh?
07:50Very interesting.
