00:00Speaking about African football and culture returning back, we have to talk about Kasi football.
00:06So Kasi football is a term that originated in South Africa.
00:09It's the definition of how football is played in the streets, in townships in South Africa.
00:14I'm sure you guys have seen viral videos of African street football,
00:17where people are maybe stepping over the ball, standing on it, showboating,
00:20and almost trying to embarrass the player they're playing in front of.
00:23But it's cultural. It's something that's very important to how South African football is expressed and played.
00:26And there's kind of been a call on social media in South Africa to bring back that style,
00:31both in the domestic league, but also for it to appear on the national team.
00:34We've never really seen showboating at that level on an international scale.
00:39Now that South Africa is qualified for a World Cup, can you guys imagine a South African showboating on the world stage?
00:44In the U.S.?
00:45And what do you guys think about that type of style appearing maybe in Europe, on the world stage?
00:50Yeah, I think the world stage is perfect for it because one thing about this World Cup that's going to be very unique
00:54is how entertainment forward it's going to be.
00:56So what better place than do it in the United States of America?
00:59And it's their, they've only been to three World Cups, 98, 2002, where they qualified not being hosts,
01:05and then 2010 as hosts. 2010 is automatic.
01:07So this is their first earned qualification since 2002.
01:11You got to bring the Kassi flavor with you, man.
01:13That's showing your culture out to the world.
01:15Ama Piano's going crazy right now. Tyler doing her thing.
01:17It's big for South Africa. Let's do it. I'd love to see it.
01:20Yeah. No, I mean, for me, I just keep thinking about the parallels between South Africa and Brazil.
01:25So, like, obviously we have the Mamalodi Sundowns, who are, like, nicknamed the Brazilians of South Africa,
01:31and, like, the blue and yellow kits.
01:33But then even, like, the whole conversation about showboating, Kassi versus Joga Benito.
01:38And, like, how I remember, like, in 2016, there was a player who played for Baroca FC
01:43who was yellow-carded for, like, standing on top of the ball or, like, kneeling on top of the ball.
01:48That happened recently with Memphis Depay and playing for Corinthians.
01:51And so we have a situation of two countries who could be more successful
01:56if they allow their players to play more freely.
01:58And, like, both fan bases are calling for their players to kind of return back to those roots.
02:03And I think if both of them lean into that, they'll have a lot more success at the World Cup next year.
