Polar bears in Canada's Hudson Bay have seen a 50 percent population decline as the effects of climate change take their toll. However, Polar Bears International is employing high-tech solutions to improve the polar bears' survival. Every autumn polar bears gather on the shores of Hudson Bay to wait for the sea ice to return so they can hunt seals, but climate change now means the summer ice-free period lasts three to four weeks longer than in the 1980s, which strains the limits of the bears' fat reserves. As the polar bears gather in Hudson Bay, Polar Bears International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to polar bears and arctic sea ice, launches Polar Bear Week running from November 2 to 8, which focuses on innovation and coexistence.
